Welcome to Week 3 of Term 1! Coleambally Central School works to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that supports student learn-ing. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for. The best education happens when parents and schools work together. The charter outlines the responsibilities of parents, carers, educators and school staff in NSW public schools to ensure our learning environments are collaborative, supportive and cohesive. Parents and carers can expect: to be welcomed into our schools to work in partnership to promote student learn-ing; communication from school staff will be timely, polite and informative; professional relationships with school staff are based on transparency, honesty and mutual respect; and to be treated fairly. Tolerance and under-standing are promoted. Please see the copy of the charter attached to this week’s newsletter. Walking to School As part of their overall care for students, schools often set guidelines for arriving and departing school safely. Primary aged students are safest when they are supervised by an adult, while older, secondary students need to be aware of the road rules and safety advice when walking to and from school independently. Safe pedestrian behaviours are taught as part of the PDHPE syllabus and it is generally accepted that parents and carers can assist by reinforcing that parent’s hold their child's hand until at least 8 years old and then closely supervising until at least 10 years of age. As our Duty of Care, we would encourage parents not to allow students to walk home unaccomp- anied by an adult until the age of 10. Swimming Carnival Thank you to all community members who attended last Friday’s Swimming Carnival. It was a wonderful day enjoyed by all in attendance, with the weather being kind to us also. I would like to thank all staff who assisted on the day, with a special mention to Miss Naomi Atkinson and Mrs Diana Tooth who organised the event as Sports Coordinators. Congratulations to all winners and participants on the day and we look forward to presenting Age Champion Awards at Presentation Night at the end of the year

Borambola Camp As part of the development of the Year 7 Transition program our Year 7 students and Peer Support Leaders participate in a two day camp at Borambola Sport and Recreation Camp near Wagga Wagga. This was to take place next week, but due to unforeseen circumstances has been postponed to Week 5 or 6. Parents will re-ceive information as soon as it is confirmed by Borambola Sport & Recreation. Lions Club Youth of the Year Lions Club Youth of the Year is a prestigious event for young people, which boasts many high profile Australi-ans among the ranks of former entrants. Students will have an unequalled opportunity to experience an inter-view situation in a friendly atmosphere and a chance to practise public speaking skills. The Coleambally Youth of the Year will take place on Thursday, 20 February 2020 and Maurice Boldiston and Adrian Hayes from the local Lions Club met with senior students last week to promote the event with students. STEM This term the school has received two STEMShare Kits, one PC Robotics Kit and a second Tablet Robotics Kit. We are also attempting to coordinate a visit from a STEM Share educator who will conduct workshops and STEM activities with Primary and Secondary students. Miss Danielle Montgomerie and Mr Rod Hughes are leading the implementation of STEM within the school in 2020. Watch this space! Lunchtime Activities Miss Montgomerie is planning two lunchtime interest group activities that we hope commence next week. These activities will take place on the lower level of the Library, which can now be also used as a ‘Makerspace’. The activities are a STEM interest group, utilising the STEMShare Kits and a Lego Club. Students may need to ‘sign up’ for the activities, as we believe they will prove popular and numbers are limited due to space and resources. Further information will follow. Finally…. Our door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. We need to know if we are not doing something right, but I also need to know that you trust our motives and intentions. Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. Until next week

Positive environmentsIt is important that our NSW public schools are positive environments and that parents and carers are kept informed of students’ progress and school announcements.

Parents and carers can expect:

• To be welcomed into our schools to work in partnership to promote student learning.

• Communication from school staff will be timely, polite and informative.

• Professional relationships with school staff are based on transparency, honesty and mutual respect.

• To be treated fairly. Tolerance and understanding are promoted as we respect diversity.

What our schools provideNSW public schools work to create positive environments for students, staff and the entire school community that support student learning. We strive to ensure that every student is known, valued and cared for.

Communicating with our schoolsOur staff will find a time to talk to you when they can give you their full attention. Please remember that while our staff are in class or dealing with other matters, they may not be available to answer your questions immediately.

Our schools and communities will make sure that written communication is appropriate, fair and easy to read. We encourage you to use email and social media appropriately to connect with your school and stay up-to-date with up-coming events in the school community.

Our guide for parents, carers and students provides useful information about the complaints process: education.nsw.gov.au/about-us/rights-and-accountability/complaints-compliments-and-suggestions/guide-for-parents-carers-and-students

Respectful communication is a rightIn all workplaces people have the right to feel respected. Unacceptable and offensive behaviour has no place in our school communities.

To ensure the wellbeing of students, staff and the community in our schools, steps will be taken to address unacceptable behaviour. This may include restricting contact with the school community or, in more serious cases, referral to NSW Police.
