Cohasset Community Association News Cohasset Emergency Preparedness & Fire Safe Council The CEP/FSC has been very busy this spring. On May 13th we held a “frank and bean” dinner at the CCA Building. The dinner was fol-lowed by a presentation by Stacy Kroner from the US Forest Service entitled “One Less Spark, One Less Fire”. Butte County Supervisor, Maureen Kirk, was in the audience, as well as three mem-bers of CAL Fire from the Cohasset station. Stacy showed a video and gave a talk about everyday activities and situations that can cause sparks. Examples of some of these things include chain saws, ATV’s, and dirt bike motorcycles without spark arrester, tow chains that drag, hot mufflers on cars driven into dry grass, and weed eaters us-ing brush blades instead of string. The evening was a reminder of the high fire danger this year will present and how things we do every day that may need to be curtailed or modified.

A hands-on chainsaw class was held on May 30th. Retired professional tree faller, Will White, of Campbellville gave this 5 hour class free. Nine people attended. Attendees ranged from beginners to experienced chainsaw operators. Eve-ryone came away with new knowledge and safety tips. There is talk of another class in the fall on how to use a chainsaw safely to clear brush. So, watch for more information on that after we get some rain! With Cohasset’s unique terrain, it has be-come apparent that if a fire approaches from the south, we could be cut off from power and phone communication. Since cell phone service is sketchy at best. The CEP/FSC has been asked, as part of

Cohasset Residents Need Water We know that during this drought there are many

Cohasset residents who are out of water. The CCA would like to help. Due to the high cost to pump water and to the fact that our water is also used for firefighting pur-poses, we cannot give out unlimited amounts. The CCA has an established water policy to help residents in need of household water. You must be a member of the CCA. We will distribute 200 gallons of water per week for four weeks only. Please contact any member of the CCA board and we will make arrangements for someone with a key to meet you at the CCA building.

If you are not yet a CCA member and would like to join, please contact Janice Lee at 892-1937. She will be happy to help you to become a member.

The yearly burn ban began on June 1, 2014. The suspen-sion will remain in effect until the Fire Chief determines it is safe to resume burning countywide. Debris burning of dooryard piles is historically one of the leading causes of fires in Butte County. Individuals found burning dur-ing the suspension period will be subject to appropriate civil or criminal action.

Plant Sale “Thank You” Thanks to all that came out to our annual

plant sale. It was a huge success! Hanson & Hanson donated a nice selection of plants. The Floral Native Nursery also donated a selection of neat native plants. The Cohasset 4-H garden group had vegetable starts avail-able for sale. Thanks to these businesses for supporting our little community. Linda For-rester was selling her gorgeous plants too. And thank you to Iliana for serving break-fast to all. See you next year!

its fire plan, to come up with a warning system in the event that all communication and power is cut off. What we have come up with is a horn system similar to the air-raid sirens used during WWII. A more modern version of this type of system is still used in rural communities in America to-day to summon volunteer fire fighters during an emergency. Ours would be used to summon residents to the CCA Building so that firefighters and/or law enforcement could advise people on evacuation orders, sheltering requirements, or anything else re-quired during such an emergency. The newer systems are pro-grammable and digital. The CEP/FSC is looking into a four horn system. The cost of the system is approximately $2,200.00. With installation, the total cost would come to about $2,500.00. On June 3, 2014 the new CCA board voted to support the CEP/FSC in this endeavor. So, over the next year or so the CEP/FSC will be holding fund raisers, asking for donations, and applying for grant money to fund this warning system. Please support this fundraising effort as generously as you can. Your family’s lives and those of your neighbors may someday depend on it. For many years, Bert Coffman attended the Butte Coun-ty Fire Safe Council (BCFSC) on behalf of the Cohasset Commu-nity. He coordinated the shaded fuel break along Cohasset Rd. Jimmy Brobeck coordinated the Chipper Program through BCFSC. For the past 2 years Ken Lawson has attended the BCFSC meetings. And at present Doug Persky is coordinating the Chipper Program. But we were never actual members of the BCFSC. In June 2014 the Butte County Fire Safe Council unan-imously voted to accept the Cohasset Emergency Preparedness & Fire Safe Council into its organization. An MOU has been sign with the BFSC and will be reviewed and renewed every year. This makes us eligible for grant money through them and puts Cohasset in the loop with whatever programs come about in the future. This is very exciting and came about through the direct efforts of the CEP/FSC headed by Kathy Lawson. The CEP/FSC currently has 6 active members. We need more people if we can ever hope to be prepared for a fire, a se-vere storm, or any other emergency. We need YOU to get in-volved with the CEP/FSC. We meet the second Tuesday of the month at 6:00pm at the CCA building. You may think you don’t have time. Though I really do understand that life is com-plicated and time is scarce, you have to ask yourself, who is going to take care of you and your family in an emergency? Who is going to clear the area 100 feet around your house? Who is going to decide when 911 will work for your emergency and what to do until help arrives? Who is going to be responsible for getting your family out safely during a fire evacuation? Who will take care of your family’s basic needs when a storm knocks out power for several days and the road to Chico is blocked by down power lines and trees? The answer is YOU ARE!! Are

Road Clean-Up “Thank You” The Cohasset Community Association would

like to thank the organizers and participants of our Annual Road Clean-Up. John Dubois, Tami Early, Dan DeWayne and Christine Meyers once again organized a great road cleanup that took place on May 24th. The day was beautiful and everything went according to plan, even though it took place on a busy Memorial Day weekend. Thanks also goes out to Lance, who sorted out all the recyclables and to Northern Recycling and Waste Service, who donated the dumpster.

you prepared to do that? The CEP/FSC can help prepare you to do these things. Don’t wait until it’s too late. Join the CEP/FSC now so that you are better prepared later when things go wrong. Kathy Lawson, Chairperson CEP/FSC

Year Round Staffing of the Cohasset Fire Station Update At the Butte County Budget hearing Tuesday June 24th our supervisor Maureen Kirk asked her fellow board

members to support adding funding to the budget to cover staffing the Cohasset Fire Station year-round. She said in the one-way-out and one-way-in mountain community a fully staffed fire station was necessary.

Susanna Malcolm spoke in support of Kirk's proposal and was supported by several Cohasset Community res-idents in the audience. A motion was made by Kirk to add $390,000 to the budget for staffing the Cohasset sta-tion year-round. The motion was not seconded and died on the floor. Those of us at the meeting were disappoint-ed as was Ms. Kirk.

We wish to thank her for being such a staunch supporter of the needs of the Cohasset Community. Staffing our fire station year-round is an ongoing issue and one we will continue to pursue.

Mayeve Tate.

Cohasset Loses Bid For Year Round Fire Station AGAIN!!!!! At the annual budget meeting, Tuesday, June 24th, Supervisor Maureen Kirk, was shot down when she tried to put forth a motion for a year- round fire station for Cohasset. She cited inadequate response times for medical emergencies as well as fires. She handed out letters from the CCA Board, the CEP/FSC, and several Co-hasset residents to all the supervisors. She explained that we have been requesting this for years. No one would listen. Their minds were made up before they even got there. When Maureen made the proposal, not one of the other supervisors would even second her motion for the station. So, the motion died without even being voted on! In attendance from Cohasset were Susana Malcom, Maeve Tate, Ken Lawson and Kathy Lawson. Susana got up and gave a very touching plea for our community. Unfortunately no one wanted to listen except Maureen Kirk. Some of the arguments against our year-round station were despicable. For example it was stated by more than one of the other supervisor that, we choose to live in the rural area, and therefore we can’t expect the same services as there are in town. It was suggested that if we want the same services as in town, we need to move to town! The supervisor from Oroville even remarked that if he voted for Cohasset to have a year round station, he would then have his own communities of Concow and Berry Creek and even Forbes Town demanding the same thing. Gee, I wonder why? Maybe they are as fed up as we are at not receiving proper services for our taxes. He then suggested that if we really want a year round fire station we should collect a fire tax from each household and fund our own!!!! I thought that Butte County already collected that as part of our property taxes. Even CAL Fire Chief McFadden spoke against a year round fire station in Cohasset. He came up with a new figure of $398,000.00 to staff the station. Let’s see $450,000.00 in 2013, to $250,000.00 in early 2014, and now this. Why does the number keep changing? What amazed me is that our county isn’t broke. It’s not even close. Yes, our budget is over $500,000.00. But we have an equal amount in reserve funds! And exactly where did that reserve fund come from? Could it be from tax payers like us in Cohasset who don’t get what we paid for? However, the sheriff’s department is getting two new positions for marijuana enforcement. The sheriff’s de-partment is also getting across-the-board salary increases to put them in a better position to recruit more quali-fied people from outside the area. The board meeting was video recorded and that recording is posted on line. The web site is ButteCounty.net, under “Departments” go to “Clerk of Board”, then under “Meetings” go to “Agenda”. Look for the correct meeting date and view the whole thing. If we can figure out how to download it, we will be showing it at the next CEP/FSC meeting on Tuesday, July 8th. I’m asking everyone to go to the site and view the video. Then come to a CCA meeting or a CEP/FSC meeting and let us know how you feel. We are ready to go the extra mile and get this done no matter what it takes. But, we need to hear from you. CCA board meetings are the second Thursday of every month at 6:30pm. CEP/FSC meetings are the second Tuesday of every month at 6:00pm. Kathy Lawson

Cohasset 4-H Report The Cohasset 4-H has finished out the year with a big showing at the Silver Dol-lar Fair, the Cohasset Plant Sale and our annual end of the year party.

The swine project members all showed and sold their pigs at the fair this year. Ethan Emerson showed in the Junior Division and won a 7th place ribbon. Maddy and Dillon Campbell, Iliana and Gage Conkey- Wiebelhaus, and Claire Emerson all showed in the Senior Division. There was quite a lot of competition and none of them placed, but

they all did a great job. It takes lots of work to raise and train pigs and we are proud of all of our members.

Our gardening project and some of our other members participated in the Cohasset Plant Sale in May. We had a variety of veggies available for purchase. Thanks to Trinity Forrester, Vann Jansen, Camille Jensen, Linda Forrester and Heather Lingemann for their hard work.

The end of the year party was a great success again this year even though some of our members we al-ready off on their summer adventures. We would like to thank Dan and Leslie Botsford for letting us use their yard and pool once again. Thanks also to Linda Hartsong for doing the barbequing. Everyone had a great time in the pool and on the bocce court. The members also received their project pins and participation awards.

We would like to thank the community for your support during the year. Your partici-pation in our Mountain Mike's Pizza Nights, our Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner and the Plant Sale make our program possible.

We will be up and running again next school year with most of the same projects. If you are a school aged kid and are interested in joining, call Susana at 893-0109. More infor-mation will be going out about next years' dates, times and projects in the next newsletter.
