Pilgrimage Holy Days and Special Texts - Part One
The Torah instructs us to celebrate
five "biblical" Holy Days. They are Rosh Hashana, Yom
Kippur, Pesach, Shavuot, and Sukkot. These last
three are called "Regalim" or “Pilgrimage” holidays,
referring to the mitzvah of "Aliyah La’reguel" (meaning
the commandment to travel from one’s home, three
times a year, to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem). In
ancient Israel, the Jewish people, by undertaking this
pilgrimage, were rising up to celebrate and to be "seen"
in the Presence of the Lord. These festivals were
extremely joyous events, reinforcing national unity and
brotherly bonds among the tribes of Israel. These
"chagim" (holidays) were a significant source of
spiritual uplifting to all who were privileged to
experience these awe-inspiring communal services and
the loving embrace created by the glowing beauty of the
“Bet Hamikdash” (the Holy Temple) on Mount Moriah.
Our tradition has assigned a special biblical text to be
read for each of the three Regalim. These texts capture
the spirit of each festival, deepen the enjoyment of its
celebration and enhance its spirituality. For the
festival of Pesach (Passover), we read the scroll of Shir
Hashirim, Song of Songs, written by King Solomon.
A careful review of this text illuminates the concept
that Song of Songs is to be understood on two levels.

WHAT’S NEW?
In the 6 years that Howard and I have belonged to CBZ, we have always made it down to Key West for some portion of the High Holidays. This year, however, we had to remain north — but, it was for the wonderful reason that our younger child was married during the intermediate days of Sukkot! So, as I did when our older child was wed a few months back, I’m wishing the newly married couple mazel tov here (see below). I must comment that we truly missed including B’nai Zion in our holiday observance; it was not the same with-out our CBZ “family” and, of course, Howard had to miss out on his favorite holiday tradition, singing in the choir. This issue totals ten pages, with the two extra being the listing of High Holiday pledges on pages 5 & 6. Now that the Fall holidays are behind us, CBZ is busy with the many activities and holidays that will fill the remainder of the year. As always though, before moving on to what’s next, we take a moment to consider what has passed and to thank those who made it happen. Please see the Thank You column on page 3. While it’s hard to believe it’s almost that time, on that same page is also information about CBZ’s upcoming celebration of Hanukkah. Here’s to the rhythm of another full and exciting year at CBZ! As always, my thanks to all who helped proofread and
create this issue.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (FROM DR. FRED COVAN):
I hope you had a spiritually uplifting, morally rejuvenating and pleasant start to the new year. Our
attendance was smaller than usual since the holidays came so early in the year. Nevertheless, the fund-
raising appeal was surprisingly successful due to the generosity of those present and those who mailed in
their donations. However, I am going to continue the appeal to those who were not here for the holidays
and have not yet sent in a pledge. We urge you to make a belated High Holiday contribution! We have
several building projects, both on-going and proposed, including the resurfacing of the roof. I think it will
save us money in the future if we replace our electric hot water heaters with gas “on demand” hot water
heaters. I am also exploring the possibility of installing solar panels on our roof so that we will become
electrically independent. Obviously, the completion of these projects requires money.
Hopefully, it will be the funds you donate that will enable us to upgrade our building and bring it into energy
efficiency compliance. In doing so, we will be fulfilling the Jewish commitment to “tikkun olam” (repairing the world) by protecting the
environment. Regardless of future improvements, we are here for you when you return to Key West for the season and we are here
for you if you live here year-round. We are also here for the tourists. I always enjoy their exuberant appreciation of our services and
our Kiddush, and their comments about how friendly we are. It’s true, we are probably the most welcoming synagogue that I have
ever attended. So, in that spirit, it will be good to see you when you return.
Shalom, Fred
Rabbi Dudai’s Message (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1)
The first meaning deals with the poetic description of a loving relationship
between a man and a woman. The poem describes their search and
yearning for each other, their undying love, and eternal embrace. To understand the second or subtextual meaning - what some of our
sages called the "Holy of Holies" – the reader must view the poem as a metaphor
for the special and unique portrayal of the eternal "Covenant of Love" between
G-d as the "groom" and the people of Israel as the "bride," with Pesach as the
wedding celebration.
Passover is a festival occurring in Spring, the season of new life and new love.
The Exodus has formalized that special relationship and that love. When
viewing the Song of Songs through this prism, perhaps we should consider greeting each other on Passover with
Happy Anniversary, instead of simply Chag Sameach.
This idea of the unending love between the Holy One and the Jewish people is expressed beautifully by the words
of the prophet Jeremiah, "Zaharti Lah Chesed Neurayih, Ahavat Kelulotayih." This translates to “I have remembered
the kindness of your youth, the love of your wedding night (nuptials).” It is a message of comfort and promise
delivered to Israel indicating that despite suffering and exile, G-d's love for Israel is eternal. We quote these words
during our prayers on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur in our fervent plea that He should inscribe us in the Book of
Life. By these words, we rely on and remind G-d, so to speak, of that eternal love.
Blessings to you all.
Rabbi Dudai

The generosity exhibited by the congregation is most appreciated. It is the policy of the Board of

synagogue, to receive the acknowledgment that they deserve. If you missed the Holiday Appeal
and would like to make a pledge in support of the synagogue, or if you would like to add to the
pledge you’ve already made, we will be happy to list you and your honorees in the next issue.
Every effort has been made
to carefully list the various

YIZKOR BOOK 5775 (2014-15)
Sheldon Davidson has announced that this year’s Yizkor Book had 98
contributors, more than any prior year. To those that participated — you are
thanked for providing a contribution that remembered those relatives & friends
who loved you during their lives and at the same time supported the good work
of the synagogue; your kind and generous help is appreciated. Please check
your records to make sure that you have made your Yizkor Book payment and
e-mail Sheldon (at [email protected]) if you are not certain.
At the recently held Yizkor services, Rabbi Dudai made special mention of all
those decedents whose names were listed in this year’s Yizkor Book and led
prayers to honor their memory. The Yizkor Book will again be utilized at up-
coming Yizkor Services held during Passover & Shavuot; the dates and times of
these services will be announced in future communications.
Many of those who attended Yizkor Services on Yom Kippur and/or Shemini
Atzeret picked up a copy of the Yizkor Book at that time. We have also mailed
some to those contributors whom we know are not often in Key West or cannot
come to the synagogue on a regular basis. The books that were mailed should
be received by now. If you don’t have a copy but would like one, Congregation
B’nai Zion will have the Yizkor Book available in the sanctuary for at least the
next 4-6 months. If you are unable to pick one up at the synagogue, one can be
mailed to you if you let us know. Please note: Mailing is expensive -- if you
can pick one up at CBZ, we urge you to consider doing that.
If you did not participate in this year’s Yizkor Book please watch for
information about how to have your dearly departed included next year.
CBZ extends thanks to SHELDON DAVIDSON & EILEEN KAWALER
and all assisting the Yizkor Book Committee with this important project.

SYMBOLS IN
JEWISH ART - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Editor’s Note: For Volume 6 of the
newsletter (2014-15), each issue will explore a different symbol commonly found in Jewish artwork.
MENORAH The menorah is an enduring
symbol of the Jewish people and
has frequently been (and remains)
regularly included in Judaic art.
While the term “menorah” is used
in America to refer to the 9-branch
candelabrum central to the ritual
celebration of Hanukkah, the
Hebrew term actually refers to the
original 7-branched version. In
fact, in Hebrew, what we call a
Hanukkah menorah is actually
called a Hanukkiah.
The 7-branched menorah is
described in the Bible and was a
sacred ritual object housed in the
Holy Temple in ancient Israel.
One of the oldest depictions of the
menorah is found on the Arch of Titus in Rome,
which was constructed in the year 82 and shows the
siege of Jerusalem in the year 70. The arch shows
the menorah being carried away together with the
Jewish captives. Thus, like the Star of David,
which was discussed in the preceding issue of the
newsletter, at a point in history the menorah
became a symbol of defeat and later was renewed
as a symbol of Jewish pride with the establishment
of the modern State of Israel. A 7-branched
menorah is the focal point of Israel’s emblem.
While the correlation of the 9-branched menorah
with the 8-day miracle of Hanukkah is absolute,
the meanings associated with the 7-branched
menorah are many . Commonly, it is taken to
represent the 7 days of creation. The ner tamid (the
eternal light) that hangs in synagogues today is
thought to have evolved from the biblical menorah,
which was continuously relit. Thus, the menorah is
often connected with the concept of universal light.
Many thanks to Judith and Stan Zabar for
their donation of Zabar’s wonderful coffee!
Now our Sabbath Kiddush luncheons are
even more fabulous thanks to them!
