More than 150 local officials from through-out Southern Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennes-see attended FEMA Region V earthquake preparedness training at John A. Logan Col-lege on January 27-28 to learn more about how a major earth-quake would impact the region and what their communities can do to prepare. It was the first regional train-ing summit in prepar-edness for next year’s national mock earthquake exercise training.
“Through this summit, we hope to foster strong rela-tionships with elected offi-cials, the private sector and the response commu-nity in Southern Illinois, which will enable us to work together on earth-quake preparedness,” said IEMA Director Andrew Velasquez III. “While we hope a major earthquake never occurs, we simply cannot afford to be com-placent.”
According to FEMA’s New Madrid Catastrophic Plan-ning Initiative Phase 2 Report, a 7.7 magnitude
earthquake along the New Madrid Seismic Zone could cause $300 billion in direct economic losses within an eight-state impacted area, while indirect economic losses could total twice that amount. In addition, as many as 3,500 fatali-ties could occur through-out the affected region, with 7.2 million people displaced and two million people seeking temporary shelter.
In addition, Jim Wilkinson, Executive Director of the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium in Memphis, spoke about plans for a multi-state earthquake exercise planned for 2011
that will involve local, state and federal partici-pants.
Other speakers addressed an overview of the re-gion’s earthquake pro-gram, mass care and shel-tering issues, the state’s plan for ensuring the safety of the transporta-tion infrastructure follow-ing an earthquake, and the statewide communica-tions interoperability plan. The training was broad-casted live through an internet feed to FEMA of-fices throughout the coun-try. Another such training is scheduled for this sum-mer.
