The Illinois Department of Transportation, through the Illinois Commu-nity College Board (ICCB), has established a Highway Construction Ca-reers Training Program in many community college districts throughout the state. One of which is at John A. Logan College’s Center for Busi-ness & Industry.

The training program is an 8-week session (2-3 sessions per academic year) in which minorities, women and disadvantaged individuals will receive intensive training in high-way construction-related skills, e.g., math for the trades, job readiness, technical skills coursework (carpentry, concrete flatwork, blueprint reading, site plans, site work, tools use, etc.) and OSHA 10 certification.

The goal of the program is to increase the total number of historically underutilized in-dividuals working on Illinois Department of Transportation highway construction pro-jects. Each college will assist trainees to become placed into Illinois’ highway construc-tion trade unions, apprenticeship programs and/or with IDOT highway construction con-tractors.
