The first words of this weekend‘s readings remind us that God did not make death. Death entered into our existence and our world through man succumbing to sin and the temptation of the devil. Death is not God‘s desire for us. That’s the consequence of us turning against God.

I once heard a priest say that he was tired of people blaming God for the death of their loved ones and those whom they cared for when they died suddenly or early in life. He said: “I wish they would blame the devil for their sorrow and loss.”

Our Gospel this weekend reminds us that Jesus came to show us that He has power over life and death. While in this world, we will still experience death in the body. But one of the reasons we gather weekly for the celebration of the Mass and use the other sacraments is because we realize that the Lord is more powerful than the body and the effects that this world might have upon us. Ours is a God of life and hope, both eternally and in our present moment.

For any who are newcomers to our area and parish, I would like you to know that we are having a special brunch next Sunday for those newly registered within the community. If you are in this group but have not yet registered, please contact the office this week so that we can plan accordingly. We do this on occasion to help people to meet one another and get to know more about the parish. (See page 3 of this bulletin for additional details about the brunch.)

Finally, may this week’s summer holiday, the Fourth of July, find you relaxing and enjoying the blessings of our nation and its heritage. The fact that for 242 years we have worked at preserving, promoting and protecting our freedoms and liberties is certainly worth celebrating. It is also important that we recognize the importance of continuing to be vigilant and active in protecting such liberties as our freedom of belief and speech in a world that sometimes doesn’t understand fully the background and significance of those very gifts. May God bless America.

– Msgr. Tom

Our Important Freedom To Follow Our Conscience

“While we are contending for our own liberty, we should be very cautious not to violate the conscience of others, ever considering that God alone is the judge of the hearts of men, and to Him only in this case are they answerable.”
