THE FJB BLOG

M A S S I N T E N T I O N S Dear Parishioners, Happy 3rd week of Lent! We are approaching the midpoint of this holy season and I hope it is going well for you. On this Sunday and the next two Sundays, we break from reading the Gospel of Luke to read from John’s Gos-pel. In today’s Gospel, the dialogue between Jesus and a woman from Samar-ia is among the most lengthy and most theological found in Scripture. The significance of the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman has many levels. The first is personal: The woman is herself converted to belief in Jesus as Messiah because he knows her sin but speaks with her just the same. The second is social: Having come to know Jesus as the Messiah, the Samaritan woman becomes an evangelist to her own people. The third level of the story is educational: Jesus uses his encounter with the Samaritan woman to teach his disciples that God’s mercy is without limit. The disciples return from their shop-ping quite confused to find Jesus talking with a Samaritan, and a woman at that! But the con-version of the Samaritan townspeople is a foretaste of the kind of open community that will be created among those who believe that Jesus is the Messiah. In conjunction with St. John of the Cross, our Parish Mission is this week. The Mission will be held at St. John of the Cross in the church. It is Monday, March 25 and Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30 pm. It will focus on the Joy and Hope in the Way of the Cross. It will be presented by the Mercidarian Sisters. The Mercidarian Sisters focus on the Eucharist and Mary and will bring those charisms to our gathering. Please plan on joining us. Our next Couple’s Night Out will be for married couples to celebrate and enrich your marriage vocation. Join fellow parishioners from both Ss. Robert and William and St. John of the Cross parishes for a “night out” featuring hors d’oeuvres and a presentation. Couple’s Night Out will be on Saturday March 30 in St. John of the Cross Parish Center beginning at 6:30 pm. Our speakers will be Peter and Laura Range, (Director of the Diocese of Toledo Life and Justice Office). Their presentation is entitled: “Marriage and Mission: Living the Gospel of Life in the home and in the world.” Bring your own bottle. The cost is $10 a cou-ple. Call 216-731-1515 to make your reservation or email Fr. Thom at [email protected]. On Sunday, March 31 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, the rectory at St. John of the Cross will be open for you to come & see. As you know the priests that serve both parishes (Fr. Thom, Fr. Tim, and I) live at St. John of the Cross Rectory. We want to open up our home for you to see and visit. You can come anytime to look around and enjoy a snack. Plan to join us for our annual spring fundraiser, this year at the Irish American Club. Full dinner, open bar, and games of chance are all part of the festivities. The cost is $45/person|$80/couple. All proceeds will benefit our Center for Student Innovation (CSI)! If you would like to sit with your friends, we suggest one person purchase the tickets, buying a table of 8 or 10 or by listing the names of people who have already purchased tickets. There is no additional cost for a table, but there will be assigned seats and this is the way to ensure you will sit together. The best way to purchase tickets is to go to the website: https://srweuclid.cc/spring-fling. You can also call 216.731.3060 or email Meg Cosgriff at [email protected]. It promises to be a great night! This event is replacing Taste of Nations this year since the gym is under construction. I am very excited to announce that the school leadership team presented to Bishop Perez a plan to open a year round day care center on the campus. We recently received word that the plan was approved! We hope to open the center right after Labor Day of this year. It will be housed in the Merici Center (the former convent). We will be moving the SRW Preschool into there as well. Our daycare center/preschool will be known as the SRW Early Childhood Center and will serve children from infancy through Pre-K. Molly Lorek (wife of our Music Director, Kyle Lorek) will be the Director of the center and work alongside Ms. Cosgriff and Mrs. Dodd in developing a strong Catholic vision for our center. If you are interested in knowing more about this center, please call the school office at 216.731.3060. We are still in the early stages and do not have all the information ready yet, but we can at least begin to know who might be interested. Make it a great week! See you in Church. Peace, Fr. John

Ss. Robert & William Catholic School A good citizenship recognition was established in the form of a mone-tary scholarship in 2016 when be-loved teacher, Mrs. Sandy Meden retired from Ss. Robert and William Catholic School. Mrs. Meden dedi-cated more than 30 years to Catho-

lic education, many of which were spent teaching Social Studies to students in the Upper School. The Sondra Meden Scholarship recognizes and rewards one boy and one girl from the seventh grade who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leader-ship, clean speech, and patriotism in their homes, school, and community. These students are selected by their peers and teachers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstand-ing degree. We are proud to announce this year’s recipients of the Sondra Meden Scholarship, Zoe Pesek and William Knox. Congratulations!
