Pope Benedict XV, after the war ended commissioned the statue of Our Lady of Peace shown on the left for the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, worked tirelessly to get the nations involved to the negotiating table and bring the slaughter to an end, and he made his most determined (and sadly unsuccessful) efforts in the summer of 1917. On the actual day the apparitions started (13 May) he consecrated Eugenio Pacelli as a bishop (shown below), who as nuncio to Bavaria played a major role in promoting the pope’s ‘Peace Note’ (Pacelli later became Pius XII). The other thing to note is that in one of the apparitions Our Lady tells the children to pray the rosary for the war to end, something the pope also asked the children of Europe to do throughout the war. Praying the rosary for peace: that remains a good thing for us all to do, as we give thanks for what happened a century ago and for what Fatima has meant to the world. PRAYING THE ROSARY FOR PEACE

MAY IS THE MONTH OF MARY , we sing in one of the

traditional hymns for this time of year. Last week we had a May

Procession in Bishop Challoner school and next Friday we have

one in St Mary’s; traditionally here at St Edmund’s we say the

Salve Regina at the Bidding Prayers. Our devotion to Mary in

the month of May should never be seen as detracting from the

importance of Eastertide: indeed Easter helps us understand

Mary, as she rejoices at the Resurrection of her Son and waits

with his friends in the upper room for the coming of the Holy

Spirit. We think of her particularly in this month as our true

Queen.

But May this year is different, because last weekend the Catholic

world marked the centenary of the appearances of Our Lady at

Fatima in Portugal; many of you will be going on pilgrimage

there this year. Others know much more about Fatima than I

do, and I am sure there will be accounts of the pilgrimages there

later this year in this newsletter; I simply want to make a couple

of observations.

The apparitions began in the middle of First World War, the

worse conflict which Europe by that time had ever known: by

May 1917 Portugal had been a combatant in the war for just over

a year on the allied side. Pope Benedict XV, after the war ended

commissioned the statue of Our Lady of Peace shown on the left

for the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, worked tirelessly to get

the nations involved to the negotiating table and bring the

slaughter to an end, and he made his most determined (and sadly

unsuccessful) efforts in the summer of 1917. On the actual day

the apparitions started (13 May) he consecrated Eugenio Pacelli

as a bishop (shown below), who as nuncio to Bavaria played a

major role in promoting the pope’s ‘Peace Note’ (Pacelli later

became Pius XII). The other thing to note is that in one of the

apparitions Our Lady tells the children to pray the rosary for the war to end, something the pope also asked the children of

Europe to do throughout the war.

Praying the rosary for peace: that remains a good thing for us all

to do, as we give thanks for what happened a century ago and for

what Fatima has meant to the world.

FEAST OF THE VISITATION OF OUR LADY Wednesday 31 May

On this last day of May, the Salesian Sisters at 25 Village Way would like to invite all those who can

to join them after the 10am mass, or in the evening at 7pm, for a decade of the Rosary, hymn

to Mary and a cup of tea. Weather permitting in the

garden or if wet in the house! All welcome

RECEPTION AFTER CONFIRMATION MASS We really need more helpers at the Reception after the Confirmation mass. We have three people setting out the tables on Friday night but more helpers to decorate and lay out the food that will be arriving on Saturday morning are needed and we particularly need helpers to serve the wine and teas and coffees and to tidy up afterwards.

If you could offer some time we would be most grateful. Please contact the Parish Office on 020 8650 0970

DROP IN CAFE Laptop needed

The guests who come to the Drop-In are a musical bunch and we usually have a sing at some time during

the afternoon. We would like to be able to project the lyrics of the songs on to a screen and wonder if anyone might

have an old laptop that they could donate to us.

It doesn’t have to be anything special. All it would need to be able to do is take a memory stick with the lyrics on.

If you could help us it would be great. It could be

dropped off at the Parish Office or you could phone the Office and we will arrange collection.

Thank you

Over the next month or so, Saturdays in our church will be very busy.
