“Unplanned” reviewed Based on the memoir by Planned Parenthood clinic director-turned-pro-life activist Abby Johnson, Unplanned opens on the crucial Saturday in September 2009 when, per Johnson’s conversion story, Abby (Ashley Bratcher, War Room) is asked to assist with an ultrasound-guided abortion and witnesses the image of a 13-week-old un-born child squirming in an apparent effort to avoid the vacuum cannula that pro-ceeds to dismember its body piece by piece. The extended flashback that follows over the next hour or so includes a number of other disturbing abortion incidents from Abby’s life and career, including two of her own. One of hers goes badly wrong, as does one at the Bryan, Texas, facility where she works. Unplanned isn’t the most disturbing treatment of abortion I’ve seen in film, but it’s queasy enough, which is the intent. Steven D. Greydanus (Decentfilms.com) Capsule Review (By John Mulderig Catholic News Service 3.25.2019) "Unplanned" (Pure Flix)
Hard-hitting, fact-based drama adapted from a memoir by Abby Johnson. During her rise to become one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors in the country, Johnson (Ashley Bratcher) gradually becomes uneasy about the organiza-tion's marketing of abortion, a process of conversion that reaches a dramatic climax when she is asked to assist a doctor performing the procedure and witnesses via so-nogram what it really involves. Her new stance is welcomed by her pro-life husband (Brooks Ryan) and parents (Robin DeMarco and Robert Thomason) as well as by some of the activists (Jared Lotz and Emma Elle Roberts) she once considered ad-versaries. But it infuriates her ornery former superior in the organization (Robia Scott) who becomes the moving force in a lawsuit against her. Written and directed by Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon, the film is effective but unsparing in its effort to convey the full horror of slaughtering the unborn. So the parents of older teens will have to decide whether the informative value of the story outweighs its disturbing content. Not for the casual moviegoer of any age. Gruesome images of abortion and dismembered fetuses, much medical gore, a mild oath, a few crass ex-pressions, a vague sexual reference. The Catholic News Service classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. - - - I was privileged to have a seat for the first Canandaigua showing of “Unplanned” courtesy of “Care net” and was quite moved. This movie was well designed and provided a reality check for me. It’s one thing to go on a “March for Life” to Washington D.C. and see the huge pictures of aborted babies on signposts in the shock and awe campaign that some people use against abortion. It’s quite another thing to see on the big screen an ultrasound of a baby, their recoil from the instruments used, and then seeing an innocent life being snatched from its mother’s womb. You read about the morn-ing after pill and maybe the RU486 program of 2 lethal doses of “medicine” that chemically aborts the unborn. The scene were explicit and showed some of what happens behind closed doors in “Planned Parenthood” (PP) facilities, and the lengths they go to in efforts to keep publicity to a minimum. But this movie isn’t just about abortions, but is about relationships between parents and children, husbands and wives, pro life and pro choice individuals. It’s not about those that yell and belittling women going into PP clinics but more about how love, compassion, prayer, and concern can change hearts. The world, our country, and our state are turning away from God and are in deep need of our prayers. Our representatives in the political arena need our letters and our phone calls voicing our dislike for the laws being enacted. But we need to do all of our protesting with respect, compas-sion, and above all, LOVE for one another. Deacon Tim

Introduction Today’s readings are filled, not only with examples of God’s abundant mercy and love, but of right living. Paul reminds us that everything outside of the pursuit of Christ is rubbish. And if we are to call ourselves followers of Christ, we must keep our focus on what lies ahead. Let us begin by letting go of our judgments and our earthly desires so we may enter into this time with our minds and hearts lifted completely to God.
