God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. From this week’s lectionary

A Sermon I Will Always RememberSome of my classmates had just been ordained, others had been accepted to impressive doctoral programs, and we all were a few days away from graduation. We had read volumes of books, written many papers, and taken numerous exams, and Yale Divinity School was about to bestow upon us an impressive degree: Master of Divinity.

Yet, at an early morning Eucharist during graduation week, our professor delivered a sermon that I will always remember. He walked out into the congregation and said, “Do not think that after three years of seminary you have mastered divinity. You have not mastered divinity. You will never master divinity because your spiritual journey and theological formation continue for the rest of your life.”

I think about those words on Homecoming Sunday as I walk into Child Hall for the Ministry Fair. The room is full of tables and booths representing different parish groups and classes. It is also overflowing with energy and excitement as people learn about all that goes on at The Cathedral of St. Philip. Homecoming Sunday and the Ministry Fair are reminders that we are a Christian community that believes in lifelong spiritual and theological formation!

The point my professor was trying to make in that sermon is that every Christian is called to grow in his faith. Perhaps St. Anselm of Canterbury describes this best when he writes the Christian life is a journey of “faith seeking understanding.” I have always loved Anselm’s words, and have found them to be true here at the Cathedral.

The Cathedral of St. Philip offers many classes and small groups that gather in faith in order to deepen their understanding of the Christian life. It is what makes being a priest at this parish such a wonderful blessing. Whether it is working with children around a Godly Play circle, teaching youth or adult classes, or partying with one of the ECW Guilds, you can always find a group of people growing together in their journey of faith.

I believe these classes and small groups are at the heart of our parish. I tell visitors and new members that these places are where you connect with people, where you grow, and where you realize that St. Philip’s is a beloved community.

As Canon for Worship and Parish Life, it is a great joy to be involved in many of St. Philip’s classes and small groups. As a Christian, my faith has deepened by participating in the life of this parish, causing me to remember that sermon—“You have not mastered divinity … it is a lifelong journey.”

I look forward to seeing you on Homecoming Sunday and at 10:10 a.m. in Child Hall for the Ministry Fair. My prayer is that you will be a part of a class or small group that helps you grow in faith, because it is a lifelong journey!

ANDREWS DRIVE IMPROVEMENTSThanks to the generosity of several Cathedral families, the grounds in front of the Lanier House, Cathedral Residence, and Mikell Chapel are being renovated over the summer and into the fall. The enhancements include removal of diseased trees and limbs, new stepping stones at the curb and to the Lanier House, and significant plantings of trees, shrubs, and groundcover. The outdoor stairwell to Mikell Chapel will also be refurbished. Tree and debris removal has begun. Hardscape work begins shortly, and plants will be installed in the fall. Please contact David Rocchio at 404-365-1033 or [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

BUILDING AND GROUNDS

CATHEDRAL WELCOMES CHRISTIE JENNISONChristie Jennison joins the Cathedral staff as Program Coordinator for Membership and Stewardship on August 25. Christie will support the work of the stewardship office which raises annual, capital, and endowment funds for the parish. She will also be responsible for membership support to include visitor follow-up, member registration, and database management. A Richmond, Virginia native, Christie graduated from Duke University in 2013 and has served as the Development Fellow of Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer (North Carolina) for the past year. Welcome Christie!

EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY (EFM) CLASS ENROLLMENTEvery baptized person is called to ministry. The Education for Ministry (EfM) program provides people with the education to carry out that ministry. During the Service of Confirmation we ask God to "renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at Baptism. Send them forth in the power of the Spirit to perform the service you set before them." EfM offers an opportunity to discover how to respond to the call to Christian service. Through study, prayer, and reflection, EfM groups move toward a new understanding of the fullness of God's kingdom.

A few spaces are available for the EfM class that begins September 16. The class meets in the Lanier House on Tuesday nights, 7-9:30 p.m. For more information and enrollment forms, contact Jane Elliott (404-291-2234) or Rick Tyler (404-375-6470).

L A A MISTA D VOLUNTEER S WA NTED

Our partnership with LaAmistad, afterschool tutoring and mentoring for first-generation American students from Garden Hills Elementary School, will continue to grow this fall. We will offer a full Godly Play session to the children on Mondays from 2:45–3:45 p.m. and an opportunity to integrate the Biblical narrative into their everyday lives through a book study on Wednesdays from 2:45–3:45 p.m. If you are interested in volunteering with this ministry beginning in mid-August, contact Mary Hunter Rouse at [email protected] for details. Ideally the volunteers who participate in this portion of our LaAmistad program would be trained in Godly Play, though that is not a requirement. We are also recruiting tutors for the academic portion of the program to volunteer on Mondays and/or Wednesdays from 3:30–5 p.m.

WELCOME TO OUR FOURTH YEAR OF MOTHER’S MORNING OUT!

We are open for business!

Mother’s Morning Out (MMO) is “drop in” care for children three months to four years. MMO is offered Monday-Friday from 9 to 1 p.m., August through May, with a charge of $35 per child each day. Reservations are recommended, but drop-offs are welcome when space is available. Each child may attend MMO a maximum of 8 hours per week. There is a registration fee of $45 each year.

New this year, we are partnering with Kidslink for our registration. We are hoping this will make registration easy for everyone. The Cathedral Preschool also uses Kidslink, so for those of you that already have a "membership" with the Preschool, you will sign into your same account. It is important to know that you can only register on this site with your computer or tablet; it will not work on your phone. To make daily reservations, we will continue to use the Sign Up Genius site.

Links to the Kidslink and Sign Up Genius pages are on our webpage, www.stphilipscathedral.org/mmo. If you have any questions, please contact Dorsey DeLong ([email protected]) or Mary Hunter Rouse ([email protected]).

Finally, as we bid a sad farewell to Anna Henry and her family, we welcome Mary Holmes to our staff. Mary is a Cathedral member, a Cathedral Preschool board member, and a Pace and Garden Hills mom – just to name a few hats!

We look forward to seeing you soon!

ATTENTION CATHEDR AL YOUTH!

If you are in sixth grade or above, please consider joining the ranks of our Youth Acolyte corps! Get to know other youth and clergy, and learn more about our worship behind the scenes. It’s a fun way to learn all kinds of skills, while also contributing to the community. Training for new acolytes will be Sunday, September 7 at 12:30 p.m. To sign up, come to the Homecoming Ministry Fair in Child Hall on Sunday, August 17 at 10:10 a.m., or contact Jeannie Mahood at ([email protected], 404-365-1034).

Please consider serving as a Eucharistic Minister or Eucharistic Visitor. Sign up for training or talk to one of the clergy, or contact Jeannie Mahood ([email protected], 404-365-1034) for more information.

WORSHIP SUPPORTJOIN THE WEDDING GUILD

The Wedding Guild is looking for new members! Members of the guild work with brides before the rehearsal, assist the clergy with the rehearsal, and coordinate preparations prior to the wedding ceremony. The guild is the welcoming committee—not only for the couple being married at the Cathedral, but also for their families and guests, many of whom are first-time visitors to our sacred space. Our hope is that everyone associated with each wedding will leave saying what a beautiful experience they had. To learn more about our ministry, visit the Wedding Guild table at Homecoming on August 17 or call one of the Wedding Guild Co-Chairs: Sherri Musgrove (404-641-9657) or Joan Gilbert (404-310-2791).

OUTREACH

HELP ST. ANNE'S GUILD STOCK BUCKHEAD CHRISTIAN MINISTRY'S PANTRY

August is Food Drive Month at the Cathedral as St. Anne’s Guild reaches out to you for donations of food and/or checks of $20 or more in support of Buckhead Christian Ministry (BCM). We ask your special help this month to ensure that BCM has plenty of food on hand for anyone who needs our support. Please stop by our table in the Atrium each Sunday in August for a list of food items and a grocery bag or two, or simply write a check for $20 or more (the equivalency of a well-stocked grocery bag) to the Cathedral of St. Philip, with BCM in the memo line. Contributions can also be made at stphilipscathedral.org/contribute.

DONATE BACKPACKS TO CROSSROADS

Close your eyes for 30 seconds and imagine this. Let’s say a fire or a Katrina-like event suddenly turns your world upside down. You find yourself homeless and without any of those possessions that meant so much to you and without a support system to fall back on.

As some 4000 women, children, and men did last year, you show up at Crossroads Community Ministries, Inc. with only the clothes on your back. Your primary concern revolves around where you will sleep and where you will eat tonight.

Once those crisis needs are met, other basic needs begin to surface. Where will you shower and how will you remain clean for job interviews? How will you keep up with the mammoth paperwork needed to reestablish your identity? And, if you are a parent, how will you carry around diapers or dolls or shampoo or deodorant?

A simple backpack, new or used, becomes “liquid gold.” Your birth certificate and other important documents, as well as personal hygiene items, will now reside not only in a safe place but also in a location that can be easily maneuvered. Families may need two or three backpacks to carry all the necessary things that each family member needs to survive.

Please consider donating a new or used backpack to Crossroads by bringing them to the collection bins in the Atrium.

All backpacks donated will be put to immediate use due to the current need for these very important items. They are key to helping individuals who are homeless turn their lives around. Thank you for providing these items that will impact our guests far more than you may ever realize.

Stan Dawson, Executive DirectorCrossroads Community Ministries, Inc.2014 Cathedral Antiques Show Beneficiary

ST. VERONICA'S GUILD COLLECTS TOILETRIESSt. Veronica's Guild collects and organizes unopened individual/sample sized toiletry items to support the work of Church of the Common Ground, Holy Comforter Friendship Center, and Crossroads Community Ministries. Our biggest needs include razors and shaving cream, toothpaste and toothbrushes, combs, wash cloths, white cotton socks (men's and ladies'), diapers, feminine hygiene products, shampoo, soap, conditioner, and deodorant.

As you travel, far away or to the corner store, collect these items (unopened and current date, please) and bring them to the Information Desk in the Atrium, labeled for St. Veronica's Guild. These small donations send a powerful message of caring to persons who are homeless, have mental illnesses, or have escaped domestic violence situations. Contact Lucy Perry (404-350-94994 or [email protected]) or Judy Bodner (404-814-1468 or [email protected]) with any questions.

CATHEDRAL ANTIQUES SHOW SEEKING COMMUNICATIONS VOLUNTEERSThe Cathedral Antiques Show and Tour of Homes is seeking volunteers in the area of publicity and communications. We are looking for those that might have experience with press releases, advertising, marketing, or social media. We also welcome anyone who is willing to learn and is passionate about giving some of their time to help the 2015 Antiques Show beneficiary, Covenant House. We have many of the needs clearly defined due to great leadership for the past few years. If you are interested or know someone who might offer help to our committee, please contact Carrie Grayson ([email protected] or 404-668-2368).

ST. CLARE'S GUILD WELCOMES MOTHERSIn its fifth year, St. Clare’s Guild strives to serve the needs of mothers with school-age children. Our focus is to strengthen our members' bonds to the Cathedral through fellowship, spiritual growth and family service in the broader Atlanta community. Dues for St. Clare’s are $30. This covers your Episcopal Church Women (ECW) membership fee of $10, donations to organizations throughout the year, and some social events. Join us! Contact Leah Wilkerson (404-603-8574 or [email protected] for more information.

Additionally, she is founder of Magdalene and Thistle Farms, a community and social enterprise that stands with women recovering from trafficking, prostitution, addiction, and life on the streets. Magdalene, the residential model, serves women for two years at no cost. Thistle Farms employs over 40 residents and graduates who manufacture, market and sell all-natural bath and beauty products in over 200 retail stores across the globe. Becca’s personality infuses her writing and speaking. She is earnest and empathetic, focused and funny. She is known for her wit as well as her humility, for day-to-day absent-mindedness and for steadfast practicality. Her message is honest to a fault, shaped by the good and bad of life, and yet it is fervently hopeful and determinedly loving. At once graceful and intimate, her prose wears real skin and muscle as it moves through the heaven and hell that inhabit the earth, imbued with the sweet unexpected scent of grace. Her most recent book is Snake Oil: The Art of Healing and Truth-Telling. There is no charge for this event but please RSVP to the Book Store at 404-237-7582 or [email protected].

Contact Lauren Carey (404-365-1078 or [email protected]) for more information.
