He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suff ered under Pontius Pilate, was crucifi ed, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. 8 Th e Seventh Sunday after Pentecost | July 3, 2016

By the power of the Holy Spirit he took fl esh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

In fulfi lment of your will he stretched out his hands in suff ering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people.

He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence.

Now with all creation we raise our voices to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sanctus Choir (A Little Jazz Mass) Bob Chilcott

Presider Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suff ering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, “Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you.” In the same way he took the cup, saying, “Th is is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of me.” Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection, we off er you this bread and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you.

We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the off ering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, fi lling them with the Holy Spirit and confi rming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ.

All glory and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever. All Amen.

Breaking of the BreadPresider “I am the bread which has come down from heaven,” says the Lord. All Give us this bread for ever.

Presider “I am the vine, you are the branches.”All May we dwell in him, as he lives in us.

Presider Th e gifts of God for the people of God.All Th anks be to God.

During Communion Choir Benedictus & Agnus Dei (A Little Jazz Mass) Bob Chilcott

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have participated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If you desire to know the love of God that overcomes indiff erence and despair, if you desire the

reconciliation that overcomes estrangement and alienation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. Th e bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the common cup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grape juice are served, grape juice is administered from the copper chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request in the East alcove.

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in a prayer

of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread and wine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your fi rst name and in a low voice briefl y state your prayer need. Th e prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a time for quiet prayer and meditation.

A Little Jazz Mass“A Little Jazz Mass,” Bob Chilcott writes, “was origi-nally written for upper voices and fi rst performed in 2004 for the Crescent City Choral Festival, New Or-leans. “I have always loved jazz,” he says. “At the be-ginning of my writing career I worked as an arranger for the now defunct BBC Radio Orchestra, and while with the King’s Singers, I was lucky enough to perform with such artists as George Shearing, John Dankworth, Art Farmer and the WDR Big Band. Th ese experiences and infl uence have all had an impact on the music that I compose.”“I am grateful to Cheryl Dupont, conductor of the New Orleans Children’s Chorus for enabling this work to come to life in such a great jazz city. I am also grate-ful to Neil Richardson, a wonderful musician who, more than 20 years ago, gave me my fi rst opportunity as a professional arranger for BBC.” Rupert Lang

Mental Health MinistryIndividuals living with mental health issues have few places where they can be truly open about themselves and the reality of the daily struggle for individuals and families when living with mental illness. Addressing this issue is the goal of the Mental Health Ministry. In the inspiring words of Dean Peter Elliott in a re-cent homily : 'Th ank God that the mental anguish of so many can be in our time - and we are just begin-ning - lessened somewhat through the provision of safe spaces where we can simply be human together.' Th e Mental Health Ministry aspires to create in Christ Church Cathedral those 'safe spaces' within our community.

Community Art ProjectTh e second phase of Th e Prayers of the Church com-munity art project is now installed in the west alcove. Th e green and copper Celtic cross is created from the same materials used for our green vestments. Tremen-dous thanks to the many people who helped make this set happen, from writing prayers to rows and rows of stitching. Work begins immediately on the third and fi nal set in blues and purples.

For more information about the project and how you can be involved visit www.thecathedral.ca/prayers-of-the-church or contact artist-in-residence Th omas Roach at [email protected].

Raise the Roof, Ring the Bells, Feed the Hungry Campaign

Th e capital campaign has now entered its fi nal phase as we shift into a "completion campaign". We have come very close to the initial goal of $7.5 million ($7.425 million raised) and are now focussing on inviting new donors to be part of the fi nal 20%.

Our aim is to have the remaining $1.6 million received in gifts or pledges when the bells are rung for the fi rst time this Fall. If you or others you know, would like to contribute, please contact Emily, the Director of Stew-ardship and Capital Campaign at [email protected] or 604 682 3848 ext 21.

See www.raisetheroof.thecathedral.ca for images of the stained glass panels as they are being prepared for the bell spire and other news!

Let's Make Th is Easy! Automated Giving

Th ese days, as cheques are becoming obsolete and cash is rarely used, Christ Church Cathedral is investigating new ways to give electronically. Currently we off er au-tomated giving through the website and paper forms to both make it easier for the donor and to reduce ad-ministrative costs and volunteer hours. Over 200 do-nors (1/2 of our donor base) give automatically either through a bank debit or credit card, totaling 56% of the off ering to parish ministry. If this is of interest to you, visit www.thecathedral.ca where, using a secure form, you can set up recurring gifts to CCC. Th ere are also forms available in the Cathedral Offi ce (in Emily’s mailbox) to begin your automated giving. We know that everyone likes to give in a particular way, which is why CCC will always off er multiple channels for giv-ing. If you have any further suggestions about how we

can improve the process for you, please contact Emily at [email protected]

Healing TouchUntil the interior renovations are complete and there is once again space available, the Healing Touch Min-istry monthly off ering on the 3rd Sunday after the 10:30 service is on hiatus. If you want to inquire about Healing Touch until then, please contact Cathedral clergy at 604 682-3848. Clergy will be able to refer you to our ministry for follow up.

Pastoral Care at the CathedralTh e Cathedral Clergy and Pastoral Care Team rely on parishioners to inform us if there's a hospitalization or a request for a home or hospital visit - we are sadly lacking in telepathy! Please contact the Parish offi ce to inform us of illnesses or requests for visitations or home communion. We do want to serve, are not too busy to visit, and simply need to know.

18 Th e Seventh Sunday after Pentecost | July 3, 2016

Notes from Dean Peter ElliottJuly ,

Worship is at the heart of the life and ministry of Christ Church Cathedral. Seven times a week and four times on Sunday, people gather around the Altar to take part in the liturgies of the church. Worship calls us into an awareness of a deeper mystery, a greater presence, as we approach and address the true and living God, known to us in Jesus Christ.

In the summer months, there is an increase in the numbers of people who attend the services of worship at the Cathedral. Visitors from around the world stop in on weekdays or Saturdays to say a prayer, light a candle, appreciate the space, and quite often join in with the daily noonday celebration of the Eucharist. On Sundays the Cathedral congregations are enhanced with the presence of tourists seeking a church to join in for their weekly worship. Hospitality is an impor-tant ministry of this Cathedral: visitors give members of the congregations a deeper experience of the diver-sity within the body of Christ.

Summer is a good time for Cathedral ‘regulars’ to mix up their diet of worship—longer, warmer days open the opportunity to experience more of the worship that the Cathedral off ers.

• If you haven’t attended a weekday Eucharist at 12:10—why not come along one day and experience a simple Eucharist in the middle of the day.

• If you’re an early riser, consider the Saturday morn-ing 9:10 Eucharist—and participate in the blessing of water that is in the font and the holy water stoop at the west entrance.

• Or what about the Th ursday morning 7:30am lit-urgy—join with the 15 or so faithful folk who share Eucharist and then a simple breakfast afterwards.

• If you haven’t yet experienced a Sunday 5:30, maybe summer’s a good time to give a Sunday morning off and come in the late afternoon to be with those who are part of the St. Brigid’s congregation.

• Or maybe one Sunday get up early and come to the 8 am—experience the words of the Book of Common

Prayer and enjoy this quiet and refl ective service.

• And now that the Service of Compline—Gregorian Chant is held at 8pm it’s a lovely way to end a Sun-day with the beauty of the music, the simplicity of the prayer accompanied by incense, a symbol of prayers arising.

In July, at the 10:30 Eucharist, once again is off ered the Cathedral Summer Festival of Sacred Music. From Jazz to Franco-Flemish Sacred polyphony: members of the Cathedral Choir with guest instrumentalists bring into the worship life a wide variety of styles all founded on the worship of the Christian church. It’s a great time to invite some of your ‘non-church’ friends to come to the Cathedral to experience the beauty of music in this much loved heritage space. More infor-mation here http://thecathedral.ca/event/cathedral-summer-festival-sacred-music-2/2016-07-03/

So many opportunities at the Cathedral, this summer, to draw closer to God. On Sunday July 31, to honour and participate in the celebrations of the LGBTQ2S community’s Gay Pride Festival, the liturgies will focus on the important place within this community for sexual and gender minorities. Th e Sunday 8am will be our “Pride” service, followed by a breakfast in the Parish Hall for all who will be participating in the pa-rade. Th is will be an important gathering for Anglicans after the General Synod, to begin this week coming, facing important decisions about changes to the Mar-riage Canon to open this sacrament to all qualifi ed Canadians.

As these summer days unfold, take time to worship, please remember the church in your prayers, and take some time to sample the wide variety of worship op-portunities that are off ered at Christ Church Cathe-dral — you will fi nd diff erences, surprises, blessings and most of all a deeper sense of the amazing diversity of this gifted and committed community.
