CONDITIONS OF SALE.

I. The highest Bidder to be the Buyer j and if any Dispute

arises between two or more Bidders, the Lot so disputed, shall

be immediately put up again and re-sold.

II. No Person to advance less than Is. 5 above Five Pounds,

2s. 6d. 5 and so in Proportion.

III. The Purchasers to give in their Names and Places of

Abode, and to pay down 5s. in the Pound, if required, in Part

Payment of the Purchase-money j in Default of which the Lot

or Lois so purchased to be immediately put up again and re-sold.

IV. The Lots to be taken away at the Buyer’s Expence,

within Three Days after the Conclusion of the Sale 3 and the

remainder of the Purchase-money to be absolutely paid on or

before Delivery j in default of which, Mr. Evans will not hold

himself responsible if lost, stolen, damaged, or otherwise destroyed,

but they w'ill be left at the sole risk of the Purchaser.

V. Whenever an imperfection, or injury has been discovered

in a Manuscript, it has been carefully pointed out 3 but the sale

of any Lot is not to be set aside on account of any faults, imper¬

fections, or errors of any description.

VI. The Sale of any Book, or Books, is not to be set aside on

account of any Stained, or Short Leaves.

VII. Upon Failure of complying with the above Conditions the

Money deposited in Part of Payment shall be forfeited 3 and all

Lots uncleared within the time aforesaid, shall be re-sold by

public or private Sale, and the Deficiency (if any) attending such

Re-sale, shall be made good by the Defaulter at this Sale, together

with all charges on such Re-sale.

No Lots will be delivered during the Time of Sale.

Gentlemen who cannot attend the Sale, may have their Commissions

faithfully executed, by their humble Servant,

This is a Manuscript of admirable beauty, writ¬ ten in small characters as distinct as they are elegant. The Author, Euthymius Zigabenus, was a Greek Monk of Constanstinople. His great talents recommended him to the especial protection, and friendship of the Emperor Alexius Comnenus I. A very interesting account of this work is given by Anna Comnena, in her history of her Father’s Reign. She says Euthymius was a profoundi

f . grammarian, an admirable rhetorician, and skilled beyond all men in his knowledge of theology. His Panoplia was undertaken at the request of her Imperial Father, who commanded him to refute the errors of every sect of heretics 3 enjoining him first to state the heretical dogma, and then subjoin to each separately a refutation from the Greek Fathers. Accordingly, this very antient Manucript acquires great additional interest from the copious

EXTRACTS from ChRYSOSTOM, GrEGORY NySSEN,

Athanasius, Damascenus, Dionysius Areopagita,

Gregory, Maximus, Basilius, Cyril, Theodorus,

and others, against the Manichseans, Sabellians, Valentinians, and numerous others. A very parti¬ cular history of the Sect of the Bogomiles founded by the Monk Basilius, who was burnt by order of Comnenus, will be found in this work, to which Anna Comnena refers, saying, as a female and a Princess, she cannot sully her pages with a narra¬ tive of the impurities of this sect. This is one oj the finest Greek Manuscripts ever imported into this country.

Tliis is a grand and noble Manuscript of the Xlth Century, upon vellum, written in fine bold and flowing characters. The Capitals and titles to the chapters are in letters of gold, there are other Illuminations in colours. It is greatly to be deplored that this most Antient and Magnificent Manuscript is imperfect.

This very interesting Manuscript contains besides the judicial process, an account of , the honours paid to the Pucelle after her decease, and the pleadings before the Pope to reverse the sentence \;-yA^ of Excommunication against her. and speaks of his writings with the highest commenda¬ tion, as do also Cantacuzenus and Thomas Magister. They have never been published in the original Greek.

of the Apostolical Acts and Epistles, may safely be ^ pronounced one of the grandest and most valuable ever brought into this country. Its interest is greatly increased from the annexation of the date by the Scribe, who says he finished it in the year of the World 6615, which according to the calcu¬ lation of Montfaucon is the Year Eleven Hun¬

dred and Seven. Before the Epistle to the Ro¬ mans, is a miniature painting of the size of the volume, representing St. Paul, in the finest style of Grecian art of the time.

Peter Victorius, the celebrated Commentator on Aristotle, and restorer of the text of Cicero Sos- piTATOR CiCERONis,” was one of the most distin¬ guished promoters of Classical Literature in Italy in the middle of the XVIth century.

This series of Autograph Letters addressed to him, may be justly deemed a highly important ac¬ quisition to any Library, Public or Private. The Letters of many of the writers extend through a series of years, and contain valuable restorations and amendments of passages in the Greek and Roman Classics, and discussions of subjects of general Literature, and connected with the Arts by some of the greatest Scliolars, Artists, and other distinguished men of the time. This Collection of various Writings of Tasso in Verse and Prose, are exact copies of his Original Manuscripts, all the variations, corrections, and interlineutions are carefully transcribed. The Latin Poem addressed to Clement XIII. bears a strong resemblance to Tasso’s own writing and has much the appearance of being autograph.
