le religioni, qualunque sia la forma culturale che assume la spiritualità umana, ci interrogano sempre e profondamente sui valori e su come far crescere e diffondere il bene. Ci richiamano all’impegno personale, al mettersi in gioco, all’aprirsi alla speranza e a non far trionfare la violenza e il male. Nel panorama mondiale sconvolto da guerre e fondamentalismi, da una crisi che è principalmente etica, sono lodevoli e direi anzi necessarie le iniziative che, sulla scorta dell’esperienza religiosa, aiutano a leggere il contesto in cui viviamo e offrono gli strumenti per interpretarlo.Religion today in particolare, è tanto più apprezzabile per come riesce a stimolare – attraverso quello straordinario strumento che è il cinema - la coscienza critica di ciascuno e a favorire la cultura dell’incontro e della pace. Un’occasione, questa della Xvii edizione, che richiama alla consapevolezza e alla responsabilità persone di ogni età e convinzione, per ricordarci che una delle principali sfide di oggi, soprattutto per i giovani, è la capacità di aprirsi al dialogo e la costruzione di relazioni positive tra esseri umani.il tema del cambiamento proposto quest’anno dal filmfestival si offre come un’opportunità per affrontare

questioni di rilevanza globale e trento ancora una volta diventa luogo ideale e geografico allo stesso tempo, ponte verso nuove prospettive e riflessioni e cardine di proficue collaborazioni fra associazioni, istituzioni e comunità religiose, in uno sforzo corale che ha dato origine ad un’operazione di grande spessore culturale.film, spettacoli, iniziative e progetti rivolti alle scuole, dialoghi tra personalità di alto profilo e commenti di esperti di caratura internazionale ci guideranno ad esplorare i grandi temi legati alla convivenza tra fedi ed etnie diverse, ai diritti umani e al rispetto della dignità della persona. Con un’attenzione speciale verso quello che è il fondamento del vivere civile: il rispetto delle regole e la difesa della legalità, che avviene solo attraverso pratiche e condivisioni di valori, imprescindibili per la realizzazione di una società più giusta e solidale.

Religions, regardless of the form human spirituality takes, always raise profound questions about values and how to help good prevail and grow. they summon us to make a personal effort, to put ourselves on the line, to open ourselves to hope and not let violence and evil win. in the current world panorama troubled by war and fundamentalism, by a crisis which is mainly ethical, initiatives on religious experience which help us to interpret the context in which we are living, and offer a key to understanding it, are not only praiseworthy but are also indispensable.Religion today in particular, is much more appreciable for the way it is able to stimulate – through that extraordinary means called cinema – the critical conscience of everyone and foster a culture of open-mindedness and of peace. the Xvii edition is an occasion which encourages awareness and responsibility in persons of every age and belief, to remember that one of the main challenges today, especially for young people, is being able to open oneself to dialogue and building positive relationships with other human beings.the theme of change proposed by the film festival this year offers

itself as an opportunity to tackle questions of global significance and trento again becomes both the geographical and ideal location, a bridge towards new perspectives and reflections and a cornerstone of fruitful collaborations between associations, institutions and religious communities, in a joint effort which has given rise to a large-scale cultural operation.films, events, initiatives and projects aimed at schools, dialogue between high-profile characters and comments from experts of international renown will guide us to explore the great themes to do with coexistence between different faiths and ethnic groups and with respect for the dignity of the person. With special attention given to that which is the foundation of civil living: respect for the rules and defence of legitimacy, which occurs only through the practice and sharing of essential values for building a more just and fairer society.

Da diciassette anni Religion today rappresenta un significativo momento culturale di riflessione e di condivisione dei temi legati alla Pace e alla fratellanza che passa attraverso il filo conduttore del cinema delle religioni. Un'occasione importante per approfondire in modo intelligente le grandi tematiche che interessano la nostra società, in un dialogo costante inserito “dentro” al tempo che cambia, interrogandosi sul ruolo della religione nelle nostre comunità, specie in questi anni di crisi economica.anche questa edizione 2014 propone infatti uno sguardo significativo sul mondo, attraverso una lente interpretativa che mette al centro valori importanti di solidarietà e cooperazione ed un impegno rinnovato al dialogo interreligioso, così come peraltro auspicato e sostanziato da Papa francesco. Proprio da questo dialogo devono nascere riflessioni e idee per affrontare le tante criticità internazionali, i molti fronti di guerra aperti, ai confini dell'europa, nel medio oriente, in africa, con il dramma del fenomeno dell'immigrazione e degli sfollati che pone sempre nuove sfide all'integrazione.Una tensione sempre attenta

sulle problematiche più attuali, anche quelle nazionali, con alcuni focus molto significativi, come ad esempio quello dedicato al ruolo della religione nella difesa della legalità, sulla scorta dell'esperienza di simboli come Don Dino Puglisi, storie personali di impegno civile nella lotta alla mafia. Una tematica quantomai delicata e legata alla cronaca quotidiana, che merita approfondimento e coinvolgimento anche da parte della comunità trentina.Religion today porta queste tematiche nel cuore di trento, città del Concilio che ha un background di grande interesse legato alle tematiche religiose e si pone – grazie a questo evento – come centro di divulgazione ed approfondimento, lanciando spunti e idee che assumono un ruolo ancor più centrale in un momento generale di appiattimento dei valori.

for the past seventeen years Religion today has represented a significant cultural moment for reflection and sharing based on themes of Peace and brotherhood which passes through the common thread of the cinema of religions. an important occasion for an intelligent in-depth exploration of the grand themes which concern our society, in a constant dialogue inserted “within” our changing times, questioning the role of religion in our community, especially in these years of economic crisis. in fact, the 2014 edition offers a significant overview of the world, through an interpretative lens which places at its very centre those values of solidarity and cooperation and renewed commitment to interreligious dialogue, precisely those which Pope francis had hoped for.it is precisely from this dialogue that reflections and ideas must be born to tackle the many critical international situations, the countless warfronts, at europe’s very borders, in the middle east, in africa, with the drama of the phenomenon of immigration and of refugees which increasingly pose new challenges to integration.a tension which is always

alert to current problems, also national ones, with several highly significant focuses, such as that of the role dedicated to religion in defence of legitimacy, for example, based on the experience of Don Dino Puglisi, personal stories of citizens battling against the mafia. a delicate theme more than ever commonplace in the daily news which deserves to be explored and include the communities of the trentino region.Religion today brings these themes to the heart of trento, the city of the Council, which has a background of great interest towards religious themes and which – thanks to this event – offers itself as a centre of spreading ideas and in-depth analysis, launching ideas and food for thought which take on an increasingly pivotal role in a general moment of the decline of values.

di rappresentare e interpretare la mobile pluralità dei fenomeni reli-giosi e della dialettica tra religioni e società.lo dimostra l’esuberante varietà delle storie, dei contenuti, del-le soluzioni formali e dei generi rappresentati nei 49 film selezio-nati per questo 17° Religion today filmfestival. tasselli di un articolato mosaico di cambiamenti personali e collettivi, evidenti o sotterranei, lenti o improvvisi, attesi o subìti, gloriosi o fallimentari. mutamenti epocali che ridisegnano il paesag-gio della contemporaneità. traumi che ci costringono a ricomporre lo spettro dei futuri possibili, mentre nel mondo torna il fantasma (de-precabile) dello “scontro di civiltà”. Rinascite che si alimentano del doppio incontro, con l’altro e con Dio. mentre anche il festival non cessa di interrogarsi, in equilibrio “tenacemente instabile” tra ricerca e fedeltà alle proprie radici.

Tema dell’anno

È il cambiamento il filo rosso di una manifestazione che quest’anno più che mai vuole scavare nelle pieghe del rapporto tra cinema, religioni, società. Perché la dimensione estetica e i simboli che attraversa-no il grande schermo sono fattori di strutturazione, adattamento, trasfigurazione della realtà. Perché il concetto di trasformazione, iscritta in una successione tempo-rale di azioni, resta un cardine del cinema narrativo. Perché l’arco del personaggio è non solo il fondamen-to della sceneggiatura, ma anche la metarappresentazione di una presa di consapevolezza che ci coinvolge tutti, come spettatori e come esseri umani: tanto che Religion today, negli anni, attraverso la narrazione cinematografica ha sperimentato e consolidato anche diverse situazioni e strategie di formazione-intervento.senza dimenticare che il cinema, arte del tempo, conserva, ancora e sempre, una capacità specifica

to represent and interpret the ever-changing plurality of religious phenomena and of the dialectics between religions and society. this is borne out by the sheer variety of the stories, content, formats and genres represented by the 49 films selected for the 17th Religion today film festival. small pieces in a patterned mosaic of personal and collective change, whether obvious or hidden, slow or sudden, expected or imposed, wonderful or disastrous. far-reaching changes which rede-sign the landscape of modernity; traumas which force us to piece together the spectrum of possible future scenarios, while in the real world the spectre of “culture clash” rears its ugly head. Rebirth fuelled by discovering both one’s nei-ghbour and God, while the festival continues to question itself in a “tenaciously unstable” equilibrium between searching for something and being true to its roots.

Change is the common thread run-ning through an event which this year more than ever seeks to unfold the relationship between cinema, religion and society. Because the aesthetic dimension and the symbols which run across the big screen are factors of structuring, adapting, and transforming reality; because the concept of transfor-mation, inscribed into a temporal succession of actions, remains the cornerstone of narrative cinema; because the time frame of cha-racter is not only the foundation of the screenplay, but also a meta-representation of a growing awa-reness which involves us all, both as spectators and human beings: so much so that, over the years, Religion today, through cinematic narration, has experimented with and consolidated different learning situations and strategies. Without forgetting that cinema, an art form of its time, has always managed

Religion today proseguirà anche l’anali-si dei grandi temi che oggi necessitano di continue e assidue trattazioni, a par-tire dal complesso rapporto tra donne e religioni; il nodo dei diritti umani in zone di guerra sarà inoltre approfondito insieme al gruppo di trento di amnesty international – italia.su analoghe questioni globali, dalle dinamiche post-conflitto al fenome-no delle migrazioni, passando per le grandi sfide della cooperazione internazionale, sono previste altre proiezioni in collaborazione con Osservatorio Balcani, Cinformi Centro informativo sull’immigrazione della Provincia autonoma di trento, Centro astalli e fondazione fontana. Come di consueto, la dimensione del dialo-go sarà sviluppata di concerto con l’Ufficio per l’ecumenismo e il dialogo interreligioso dell’arcidiocesi di trento e con il tavolo locale per le appartenze religiose; prosegue inoltre il rapporto con la fondazione Bruno Kessler e con il museo Diocesano tridentino per speciali proposte tra approfondimento scientifico e divulgazione, e l’interse-zione con la Biblioteca Comunale di trento, che ospiterà tra l’altro una mo-stra bibliografica sui temi del festival. tra le principali novità dell’edizione si colloca il patrocinio dell’Università di trento per un appuntamento che avrà il compito di offrire una prima interpretazione del tema dell’anno dal punto di vista della sociologia delle

ancora una tappa – la diciassettesima – per il film festival nato con l’obiettivo di valorizzare le diverse espressioni cinematografiche e religiose, per una cultura del dialogo e della pace. 49 i film in concorso, provenienti da 20 paesi da tutto il mondo; particolarmen-te numerosi gli approfondimenti, gli eventi, le partnership e le personalità che arricchiranno la proposta itinerante del festival, declinando la riflessio-ne sul tema dell’anno: “CHaNGe! Religioni, società, cambiamento”. in questa cornice ben si inserisce un percorso sul ruolo delle religioni nella difesa della legalità e nella promozione della giustizia e della sicurezza sociale, organizzato nella sede storica di Trento in stretta collaborazione con la sezione regionale dell’associazione Nazionale magistrati. Dall’antimafia alla lotta contro il terrorismo, gli appuntamen-ti, estesi anche alle scuole trentine, rilanciano la necessità di un impegno che interroga le chiese come la politica e la società civile, particolarmente in un tempo, qual è il nostro, di crisi universale di senso e di ideali.in linea con la storia e la missione del festival, un’intera sezione del concorso viene organizzata con il forum trentino per la Pace e i Diritti Umani, con titoli di straordinaria attualità e impressio-nanti testimonianze di riconciliazione, in un tempo che vede la tragica mol-tiplicazione dell’odio e della violenza fondamentalista. in questo ambito

religioni; anche l’eterno dibattito tra scienza e fede troverà spazio con il supporto del nuovo mUse – museo delle scienze. il percorso «into india» aprirà una nuova finestra sul mondo indiano, grazie a numerosi film in concorso e ad un evento speciale di danza Kuchipudi che conferma l’apertura del festival al dialogo tra diverse espressioni artistiche. in occasione della cerimonia di premiazione del festival, sabato 18 ottobre, sarà un reading musicale, nel centenario dello scoppio della Grande Guerra, a fare memoria viva, con particolare riferimento al dato poco esplorato della pluralità religiosa negli eserciti in campo, in cui militavano cappellani di almeno 5 diverse religio-ni e confessioni.tutte le proiezioni saranno presentate e commentate per un’esplorazione delle poetiche e dei generi del cinema contemporaneo che ancora una volta si arricchisce del sodalizio con il Ci-neforum di trento. accanto alle giurie speciali, pensate come strumento di partecipazione attiva della comunità ai lavori del festival, si conferma l’atten-zione specifica ai più giovani – con le matinée riservate alle classi e differen-ziate per fasce d’età – e alla popolazio-ne matura e anziana, in collaborazione con la Cooperativa Kaleidoscopio. sarà inoltre particolarmente vivace il confronto con le diverse comunità reli-giose presenti in trentino, dal mondo parrocchiale alla Comunità islamica di trento, partner attiva anche per l’orga-nizzazione di un appuntamento per le scuole presso il Centro di Gardolo.il tradizionale “laboratorio di convi-venza” riunirà registi ed esperti di

diverse fedi e nazionalità, che avranno l’occasione di condividere le giornate del festival e lavorare insieme sul potenziale del cinema per il dialogo e l’educazione alla pace.Prosegue, con il supporto del servizio attività Culturali della Pat, il coordi-namento con il trento film festival e la Rassegna internazionale del Cinema archeologico di Rovereto per un “siste-ma cinema” trentino che quest’anno per la prima volta esprimerà anche un premio speciale del concorso. l’aPt di trento ha inoltre elaborato uno spe-ciale pacchetto turistico che valorizza l’offerta di Religion today anche come occasione di riscoprire il patrimonio storico-artistico di una città storica-mente vocata a farsi ponte tra popoli, fedi, culture.l’edizione 2014, che in Trentino tocca anche le località di Rovereto, Borgo valsugana, arco e lisignago, consolida anche la dimensione regionale del festival; a Merano un doppio appunta-mento prosegue la partnership con la Chiesa evangelica luterana, l’Univer-sità popolare Urania meran e il Centro per la Cultura, mentre a Bolzano prende il via una nuova importante col-laborazione con il Centro per la Pace.fuori regione, si confermano gli appuntamenti di Bassano, Nomadelfia e Roma, importante vetrina nazionale che torna ad accogliere l’esperienza consolidata del seminario interna-zionale organizzato con la facoltà di scienze della Comunicazione sociale dell’Università Pontificia salesiana. ma il viaggio continuerà nei mesi successivi in contatto con quanti, nel mondo, si occupano del dialogo tra cinema e religioni.

which today require continuous and consistent discussion, starting from the complex relationship between women and religion; the thorny issue of human rights in war zones will also be analysed by a group of representatives from the trento branch of amnesty international – italia. On similar global questions, from post-conflict dynamics to the phe-nomenon of migrations, passing through the great challenges posed by interna-tional cooperation, other screenings are planned in collaboration with Osservato-rio Balcani, Cinformi – the information centre for immigrants in the autonomous Province of trento – Centro astalli and fondazione fontana. as is customary, the dimension of dialogue will be devel-oped in coordination with the Office for ecumenism and interreligious Dialogue of the archdiocese of trento and with the local Working Group for religious faiths; the ongoing collaboration with the fondazione Bruno Kessler will of course continue, as well as that with the museo Diocesano tridentino on special propos-als ranging from in-depth scientific analysis to publicizing events, and the Biblioteca Comunale di trento, which will host a bibliographical exhibition of the themes of the festival. among the main news of this edition there is the support of the University of trento for an appointment which will have the job of offering a first interpretation of the theme of the year from the point of view of sociology of religions; there will also

another milestone – the seventeenth – for the film festival which was born with the aim of evaluating different cinematic and religious expressions for a culture of dialogue and peace. there are 49 films in competition from 20 countries all over the world; there are numerous moments of in-depth analysis, events, partnerships and those personalities which enrich the itinerant festival, declaring the reflection on the theme of the year: “CHaNGe! Religions & society”. fitting into this framework is a path exploring the role of religions in defence of legitimacy and the promotion of justice and a safe society, organ-ized in the historical setting of Trento in close collaboration with the regional section of the National association of magistrates. from anti-mafia initiatives to the fight against terrorism, the ap-pointments, which are also open to tren-tino schools, reintroduce the necessity of commitment which questions churches, politics and civil society, particularly in a time such as this, one of universal crisis of the senses and of ideals. in line with the history and mission of the festival, an entire section of the competition will be organized with the trentino forum for Peace and Human Rights, with particu-larly timely titles and striking testimo-nies of reconciliation, in a time which bears witness to the tragic multiplication of hatred and fundamentalist violence. in this setting Religion today will con-tinue its analysis of the great questions

be space for the eternal debate between science and faith with the support of the new mUse science museum. the «into india» section will open a new window on the world of india, thanks to the numerous films in competition and a special event of Kuchipudi dance which confirms the opening of the festival to dialogue between different forms of artistic expression. On the oc-casion of the festival’s prize ceremony on saturday 18th October, there will be musical reading in the centenary year of the outbreak of the Great War, to keep the memory alive, with particular reference to the little explored theme of different religions in armies in the field of war, in which chaplains of at least 5 different religious faiths ministered to their troops. all the screenings will be presented and commented on to explore the poetics and genres of contemporary cinema which again is enriched by the partnership with the trento Cineforum. alongside the special juries conceived of as a means of encouraging the com-munity to take an active part in the work of the festival, special attention will be given to young people – with matinées dedicated to classes differentiated by age group – and to the more mature members of the local population, in collaboration with the Cooperativa Kalei-doscopio for senior citizens. Discussions with the different religious communities present in trentino will be particularly lively, from the parochial world to the trento islamic Community, an active partner on numerous occasions includ-ing the organization of an appointment for schools at the Centro di Gardolo. the traditional “living workshop” will bring together filmmakers and experts

of different faiths and nationalities, who will have the occasion to share the days of the festival and work together on the potential of cinema for dialogue and educating for peace. moreover, thanks to the support of the servizio attività Culturali of the autonomous Province of trento, the coordination between the trento film festival and the Rassegna internazionale del Cinema archeologico in Rovereto will continue, for a trentino “cinema system” which this year for the first time will confer a special prize in the competition. the trento tourist Board has also drawn up a special tour-ist package which takes advantage of Religion today’s events as an occasion to rediscover the historic and artistic heritage of a city with a longstanding vocation for bridge-building between peoples, faiths and cultures. the 2014 edition, which in Trentino will touch base in places such as Rovereto, Borgo valsugana, arco and lisignago, will also consolidate the regional dimen-sion of the festival; Merano will host an ongoing double appointment with the lutheran evangelical Church, the Uni-versità popolare Urania meran and the Centro per la Cultura, while in Bolzano a new important collaboration with the Centro per la Pace will take off. Outside the region, the traditional appointments with Bassano, Nomadelfia and Rome, are confirmed an important national showcase for the festival which returns to welcome the consolidated experience of the international seminary organized with the salesian Pontifical University. But the journey will continue in months to come in contact with those all over the world who are striving for dialogue between cinema and religions.

Ho conosciuto don Puglisi quando ero piccolo; veniva a trascorrere alcuni giorni di vacanza con la mia famiglia. I suoi occhi brillavano di una luce speciale che non so spiega-re. Il 15 settembre 1993, un colpo di pistola alla nuca ha spento quella luce e ha segnato un pezzo di storia della Chiesa e della società civile in Italia. Fu eliminato perché, sottraen-do i bambini alla strada, li sottraeva al reclutamento della mafia. Il suo assassinio fu il mostruoso epilogo di una lunga catena di incomprensioni, inadempienze e silenzi da parte di tutti. A vent’anni dalla sua morte, il 25 maggio 2013 a Palermo Don Pino è stato proclamato beato. Porto sempre con me l’immagine di Padre Puglisi, è nelle mie preghiere. Oggi sento il bisogno di raccontare la sua storia, intrecciandola con episodi sa-lienti della mia biografia, in cui Don Pino è presente anche quando è lon-

tano, perché credo che possa aiutare le nuove generazioni a recepire quei valori di cui ogni sua azione compiu-ta era portatrice: Fede, Coraggio e, soprattutto, capacità di Perdonare. (Christian Di Domenico)

I met don Puglisi when I was a child; he came to spend some of his holi-days with my family. His eyes shone with such a special light I cannot explain it. On 15 September 1993, a pistol shot to the neck extinguished that light and left its mark on a piece of Church history and of Ital-ian civil society. He was eliminated because in taking children in off the streets he was taking them away from being recruited by the mafia. His assassination was a monstrous epilogue in a long chain of misun-derstandings, noncompliance and silence on the part of everybody. Twenty years since his death, on 25 May 2013 in Palermo Don Pino was beatified. I will always carry with me the image of Father Puglisi, and in my prayers. Today I feel the need to tell his story, weaving it together with significant moments in my own life, in which Don Pino is present even if he is far away, because I

believe he can help new generations to acknowledge those values which his every action bore witness too: Faith, Courage and, above all, being able to Forgive. (Christian Di Domenico)

it’s Good friday in mariotto, a small town in the Puglia region. everything is ready for the re-enactment of the stations of the Cross, but michele, scheduled to play Jesus, sits on the crown of thorns. ameluk is then volunteered by the local priest to step in and play the part of Christ. Just one problem - he is muslim. the news spreads and public opinion is divided. ameluk also finds himself running for the mayor’s office! in a mixture of dramatic moments and comedic situations, it will become his job to unite the two sides again.

When it became socially acceptable for men to have these boys as sexual partners, a blatant form of paedophilia evolved in the name of folk musica/music. allusions to this custom are aplenty in Bengali literature and musica/music. “Pleasure Boy Komola” tells the tragic story of a boy hired by a colonial era landlord to entertain him until the annual flood is over.

Condannato all’ergastolo, samundar viene perdonato dalla famiglia di Rani, che non solo chiede (e ottiene) per lui la grazia, ma arriva ad accoglierlo come un figlio e come un fratello.

the mystery of forgiveness lies at the centre of this film which tells the story of samundar singh, a young Hindu fanatic. in 1955 he stabbed 54 times sister Rani maria, a franciscan missionary originally from Kerala, abandoning her at the side of the road thus condemning her to a slow death in total solitude. Having received a life sentence, her family forgave samundar, obtaining his release from jail and accepted him as a son and a brother.

His film about religious certainty became a film about his own deep-rooted doubt. eric, a non-believing friend tells him comfortin-gly; ‘if Jesus truly concerns himself with you, then he will surely understand that you are searching’.

Biswajit, 15 anni, è uno degli ultimi Gotipua, un danzatore sacro di un villaggio dell’Orissa, in india. alla nascita, è stato donato al tempio perché imparasse a danzare per il dio shiva. vestito e truccato come una giovane donna, Biswajit rappresenta l’amante del Dio. ma a causa dei limi-ti d’età, è costretto ad abbandonare il tempio per un mondo a lui scono-sciuto. Biswajit troverà la sua strada nel misticismo ascetico: è pronto a esibirsi nella sua ultima danza prima di rinascere a una nuova vita.

fifteen-year-old Biswajit is a Gotipua, a sacred dancer who lives in a small village in Orissa, india. at birth, he

was given to the temple to learn to dance in honour of the God shiva. made-up and dressed to look like a young girl, he represents the De-vedhasi, the God’s young lover. But because of age restrictions, he must leave the temple for the unknown world outside. He finds his way to-wards ascetic mysticism: he is ready to accomplish his last dance before being born again into a new life.

New religious movements are on the rise worldwide and across all religious spectrums. Religiosity is no more a rural phenomenon. On the contrary: religion moves into the big cities and here it becomes reinvented. this documentary exemplifies this pheno-menon in the cities of lagos, istanbul and Berlin. the spectre of the “post-secular city” has become reality. two young sicilian directors underta-ke a long journey in the most remote areas of the countryside in order to witness the profound transforma-tion that the island has undergone. they collect stories from craftsmen, housewives, farmers, fishermen, intel-lectuals, priests and storytellers. they draw a disturbing portrait of a land suspended between ancient visions and deep-rooted bitterness; the faint hope for a new beginning clashes with the shared belief that nothing will ever change from within this land.
