    How Do They Work?

    4

    How do Detectors Work?

    Optical (photo-electric) smoke detector

Optical smoke detectors incorporate a pulsing infra-red LED

located in a chamber within the housing o the detector. The

chamber is designed to exclude light rom any external source.

At an angle to the LED is a photo-diode which normally does

not register the column of light emitted by the LED. In the

event o smoke rom a ire entering the chamber, the light

pulse from the LED will be scattered and hence registered bythe photo-diode. I the photo-diode sees smoke on the two

ollowing pulses, the detector changes into alarm state and the

indicator LED lights up. The detector housing is identical to

that of the ionisation detector but has an indicator LED which

is clear in quiescent state but produces red light in alarm.

Optical smoke detectors respond particularly well to

slow-burning (smouldering) fires. They are widely used

    for life protection.

    Multisensor detector

A multisensor detector is basically an optical smoke detector -

so it will respond well to smouldering ires. The addition o a

heat sensing element allows the multisensor to give a response

to ast burning (laming) ires which is comparable to that o

    an ionisation detector.

Multisensor detectors are general purpose detectors

which respond well to a wide range of fires.

    Ionisation smoke detector

The sensing part o the detector consists o two chambers - anopen, outer chamber and a semi-sealed reerence chamber

within. Mounted in the reerence chamber is a low activity

radioactive oil o Americium 241 which enables current to

low between the inner and outer chambers when the detector

is powered up. As smoke enters the detector, particles

become attached to the ions, causing a reduction in current

low in the outer chamber and hence an increase in voltage

measured at the junction between the two chambers. The

voltage increase is monitored by the electronic circuitry which

triggers the detector into the alarm state at a preset threshold.

An externally visible red LED lights up when the detector

changes to alarm state.Ionisation smoke detectors are good specialist detectors

which respond well to fast-burning (flaming) fires and are

now used to overcome specialist problems.

    Integrating ionisation smoke detector

This type o detector works on the same principles as the

ionisation smoke detector, but has modiied signal processing

circuitry which allows an alarm threshold to be present or up

to 20 seconds without initiating an alarm.

This type o detector is suitable or use in areas where

transient high levels o smoke may be expected.

    How Do They Work?

    5

Integrating effect in analogue addressable systems

In XP95 systems, the integrating eect can be mimicked in

both ionisation and optical smoke detectors by adjusting the

control equipment sotware to cause an appropriate delay.

Discovery smoke detectors should be set to Mode Two or

Mode Four to achieve this eect.

    Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas produced by

combustion and a CO fire detector is used to indicate theoutbreak of a fire by sensing the level of CO in the air. The

detector has an electrochemical cell which senses CO, but

not smoke or other combustion products. The cells do not

require much power, so the detector can be made electrically

compatible with ordinary smoke and heat detectors. Apollo

manufacturers a CO detector as part of the Discovery range.

CO detectors are particularly good at detecting deep-

    seated, smouldering fires.

    Heat detector

Most conventional heat detectors operate by using a matchedpair of thermistors to sense heat. One thermistor is exposed

to the ambient temperature, the other is sealed. In normal

conditions the two thermistors register similar temperatures,

but, on the development o a ire, the temperature recorded

by the exposed thermistor will increase rapidly, resulting in an

imbalance o the thermistors, causing the detector to change

into alarm state. Rate-o-rise detectors are designed to detect

a ire as the temperature increases, but they also have a ixed

upper limit at which the detector will go into alarm i the

rate o temperature increase has been too slow to trigger the

    detector earlier.

The Series 65 and AlarmSense CS (static response) heat

detectors have only one thermistor. They change to the alarm

    state at a preset temperature.

Externally, the heat detectors are distinguishable from the

smoke detectors by having wide openings to the surrounding

atmosphere to allow good movement o air around the

    external thermistor.

A heat detector may be more appropriate than a smoke

detector where the environment is dirty or smoky under

normal conditions. It must be recognised, however, that

any heat detector will respond only when a fire is wellestablished and generating a high heat output.

    Intelligent reflective beam detector

Intelligent relective beam detectors comprise a single unit

which houses a transmitter, a receiver and the control

electronics. When a ire develops, smoke particles obstruct

the beam o light and, once a pre-set threshold has been

exceeded, the detector will go into alarm.

Beam detectors are designed to protect large

open spaces such as atria, museums, churches and

    warehouses.

    Flame detector

A lame detector is designed to detect either ultraviolet (UV)

or inra-red (IR) radiation emitted by a ire. The XP95 Dual IR

lame detector is sensitive to low-requency, lickering inra-red

radiation. This means that the detector can operate even i the

lens is contaminated by a layer o oil, dust, water vapour or ice.

Flame detectors are effective in protecting areas where

    flaming fires may be expected.

Apollo oers two ranges o analogue addressable

systems - Discovery and XP95. Discovery is

Apollos high-speciication range and oers the

    ollowing advantages over XP95:

Five operating modes, each EN54 approved

to provide the widest possible ire detection

    solution

    Automatic drit compensation where the

    detector automatically compensates or the

build up o contamination, maintaining a

    stable alarm threshold

Access to a more advanced range o eatures

    in Discovery audio visual equipment

There are two types o analogue addressable

system those with distributed intelligence andthose with centralised intelligence.

In systems with distributed intelligence the

    detectors incorporate processors which can

determine whether alarm levels o smoke or heat

exist and can initiate action accordingly.

Detectors in systems with centralised intelligence

monitor the air around them or smoke or heat

and transmit the data to the control panel on

interrogation. The processor in the panel compares

the values with stored values and determines

whether a pre-alarm or alarm should be signalled.

The advantages o distributed intelligence are local

adaptation to environment and reduction o traic

on the supply and data wires. The advantage o

centralised intelligence is the ability to upgrade a

system very quickly and easily by upgrading the

    control panel.

    Discovery is a range o high-speciication, analogue

addressable ire detectors. Discovery detectors oer reliable

detection and alse alarm management by a combination

of EN54 approved operating modes and sophisticated

algorithms. Discovery has a distributed intelligence system

where decisions are made in the detector head as well as atthe control panel. Drit compensation is also incorporated

into the detector, allowing it to adapt to dirty or dusty

    environments, which reduces alse alarms.

Each detector in the Discovery range can operate in one of five response modes,

which can be selected rom the control panel or hand held programmer. The

response characteristics have been careully set so that the detectors comply with the

requirements of the relevant part of EN54 in all response modes. Mode One will give

The XP95 range o analogue addressable ire detectors is

advanced in design, improved in perormance and has

unique eatures that beneit the installer and end user.

The range eatures smoke detectors (optical and ionisation), standard and high

temperature heat detectors and a multisensor. Beam detectors, lame detectors,

manual call points, audio visual signalling devices, interace units and isolators

complete the range. XP95 has a central intelligence system where all the decisions

are made by the control panel.

Apollo has always used an open, digital protocol since 1986 and has ensured

backward compatibility when developing new products. An open protocol allows

reedom o choice or the ire system speciier, installer and end user. A system using a

digital protocol is also much less susceptible to corruption than an analogue protocol

and is thereore oten preerred in a system which is lie critical. XP95 is suitable or

medium to large applications with simple installation requirements.

    Two-wireTechnology

    In conventional systems, detectors

are hard wired into a circuit or zone.

They signal a re condition to a

control panel by changing rom a

high to low impedance. The panel

    detects this impedance change by

    current monitoring and identies the

    zone. Individual detectors cannot be

    identied. In two-wire conventional

    systems, re detection and alarm

    products are connected to the

same pair o supply wires, makinginstallation quicker, less expensive

and more fexible than traditional our-

    wire systems. Two-wire systems are

    Traditionally, re detection systems in

    industrial and commercial applications

    have used hard wired installations.

    These systems are generally installed

at the time o construction or

    reurbishment, making the laying

o cables less o an issue. Certain

    applications do not lend themselves

to this approach, such as occupied

    buildings, heritage sites, palaces,

annexes etc. - this is where wireless

    systems provide the ideal solution.

    Wireless Technology : XPander

    42

XPanderwireless technologyXPander is a system in which individual detectors, call points

and alarm devices and interaces communicate with the

XP95 loop by radio signals. An interace is connected to the

loop in the same way as any other interace, such as an input/

    output unit.

Every XPander device is assigned an address and this address is recognised by

the control panel in the same way as the address o any other device connected

directly to the loop wiring. The XPander range benefits from the patented XPERT

technology that is also used in Discovery and XP95. See page 23 or more details.

XPander can be incorporated into ire detection systems in stately homes

and architecturally sensitive buildings where the use o ire cables is either

    impractical or undesirable.

    Key features of XPander include:

    Easy to install

    XPERT card addressing

    Self-monitoring

    Proven technology

    No special control panel needed

    868MHz radio channels

Up to 31 devices per interface

Up to 5 interfaces per loop

All detectors within the XPander range are

    sold with mounting bases.

Please ensure that you have attended an

approved XPander training course prior topurchasing products rom the XPander range.

A site survey tool must be included in the irst

order o XPander products as a site survey

must be carried out prior to installation.
