SELECTION CRITERIA
Intended audience, 12 years to 15 years of age
To determine whether a “borderline” book is a J or a YA, apply the following criteria:
Look at the age of the characters, if 14 years or older books will be YA
Look at the content. If the book appeals more to YA audience, then it will be YA.
Look at the writing structure. If the book is more sophisticated, than it will be YA.
Look at the author’s previous works. If they are predominately YA, new title will probably be
YA also.
CLASSIFICATION:
Cut off the Dewey classification at the first segmentation unless there is only one digit remaining, then retain.

POLICY:
If a title is in both the reference and circulating collections, the bibliographic record should reflect a
circulating book while the item record needs to reflect whether the item is a circulating or reference item.
If there are any questions concerning the status of an item, contact the Children’s Specialist librarian.
Johnson County Library currently uses the prefix JREF for non-circulating items in its Youth collection.
SPINE LABEL
Do not add the date to the spine label unless the copy in hand is being added to a serial record or
is part of a collection where the volumes use some kind of enumeration, including year, or the
title is already owned in the collection with the date on the spine label.
Cutters will be the author’s last name or the first significant word of the title (limit to 8
characters)
Double cutters will be applied according to local cataloging decisions.
WAYS TO DETERMINE THE DEWEY NUMBER:
To determine classification, check SIRSI using the Dewey number on the OCLC record to verify
where similar items have been classed.
Follow local Dewey decisions, as noted.
Search subject heading to see where similar items have been classed.
Consult DDC 22
All non-fiction classifications should be cut off at the fourth digit (or less) past the decimal point, if
possible. Do not automatically cut off at the fourth digit but determine where the most logical break is in
the classification. If the subject can be expressed by use of the fifth digit, use the fifth digit. Continue to
be as specific as possible.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC FIELDS:
300 Physical Description
If the illustrations are part of the numbered sequence of pages then just use “ill.” in the description.
Use “ill., ports.”, when there are group portraits as well as individual ones (Check to be sure there are
portraits relevant to the material in the book).
Leaves are plates printed on one side.
Plates are the shiny unnumbered pages printed on both sides.
521 Target Audience
Do not add, edit or delete.
650 Subject Added Entry
As a general rule use the first 650 entry on a non-fiction entry to determine the Dewey
class.
Use only LCSH headings with second indicator of 0 (600, 610, 611,630, 650,651, fields).
A minimum of one subject heading is required for all items. Two to four subject
headings are preferred.
Assign headings for specific topics that are the primary subjects of an individual work. If
other editions of a title exist in the database, copy those headings to the bibliographic
record. Assign headings only for topics that have been made explicit by the author or
publisher, such as topics mentioned in the title, series, introductory matter, dust jacket or
other prominent location, or other sources of information such as reviews.
On non-fiction works drop the ‡v Popular works from the record.
Poetry books (J, E or YA 811.54) do not generally have to have a 650 field on the youth
record. However when the particular style of poetry, geographic area, and/or time period
is readily available, add a subject heading.
When the biography is about a person who lives in the United States, you may delete
the United States from the 650 field.
Biographical subject headings: 650 0 Artists ‡z France ‡x Biography ‡v Juvenile
literature.
CATALOGING MANUAL Youth Reference
Revised: August 13, 2014
History subject headings: 650 0 Cities and towns ‡z United States ‡x
History ‡v Juvenile literature.
Travel subject headings: 650 0 Cities and towns ‡z United States ‡v
Guidebooks.
If a topic heading with a sub-field ‡z United States is a cross-reference to one or more
headings in our local system, keep the subdivision in the heading.
Leave in the subdivision United States when it is a complete subdivision phrase
(Example: ‡z United States ‡x States), otherwise the subdivision ‡z United States
can be deleted from all other topical headings (650 indicators blank 0). If possible, avoid
using ‡z United States for fiction headings. You should instead use the state or the
city/state geographical sub-division. State or the city/state geographical field is 651,
indicators blank 0. If in doubt, please consult a cataloger.
NOTICE THIS ONLY PERTAINS TO UNITED STATES AS A SUB-DIVISION IN A
650 FIELD. DO NOT DELETE UNITED STATES WHEN IT APPEARS AS A 651 ‡a.
651: Geographic Name Subject ‡v Juvenile literature.
Leave in. Indicators are blank 0 only.
653: Index Term.
Change to 650 if you can find LC form, otherwise remove.
690: Topical Term Local Subject.
700: Joint authors or responsible persons.
Do not keep author/title by using delimiter t, except in music collections and analytics
710: Corporate Name.
If publisher obvious, such as McGraw-Hill, delete.
730: Uniform Title.
Leave in and delimiter as necessary. (130 usually becomes 730.). First indicator is blank (no
information), and second blank.
740: Individual titles within a piece.
CATALOGING MANUAL Youth Reference
Revised: August 13, 2014
Use only first indicator 0, using no articles. The second indicator reflects that it is an analytical
title, and will be 2 (indicators 02 for this field).
This tag is limited to added entry access for analytical titles. An analytical title is an independent
work contained within the item being cataloged. Leave in the dagger t. The first indicator
reflects the number of non-filing characters. This indicator will be 0 reflecting JCL’s policy of
excluding articles in a 740 field.
