FOREWORD

WOODCO USA has manufactured a hinged spider to accommodate holding tubing, casing and drill pipe, since 1976. Originally these spiders had a rated capacity of 100 Tons.

Current WOODCO USA 150 Ton Spiders have the same overall dimensions as the older 100 Ton Spiders. The 150 Ton Spiders came about as an upgrade of the 100 Ton unit. We increased the strength of the body material and the pin material, and made the pins slightly larger in diameter. We also changed the removable pin attachment to a bolted design; now we use no assembly welding on load bearing parts, and we now secure the fixed pin with a snap ring rather than brad it. WOODCO USA can modify 100 Ton Spiders to use updated parts, click here to view these updated parts.

To provide you with greater quality assurance, all new spiders have 100% Magnetic Particle Inspection performed 24 hours (minimum) after a load test to 225 Tons. WOODCO USA 150 Ton Spiders made since 2006 bear the API 7K Monogram.

In all other ways you will find that the 150 Ton and the 100 Ton WOODCO USA Spiders appear and function identically. These Spiders use the same commonly available API Rotary Slips to grip and support pipe.

1.0 General

WOODCO USA presents this catalog to provide useful information about the WOODCO USA 150 ton manual casing and tubing Spider. It describes the application, designates the applicable specification and reference standard, indicates the material specification, and provides a quality statement.

The Illustration, Figure 1, provides an assembly drawing. Figure 2, presents specific replacement parts. Included photographs show the Spider Closed and Open.

1.1 Purpose

WOODCO USA intends this catalog to communicate the design, material, and quality advantages of the WOODCO USA 150 Ton Manual Spider.

1.2 Application

Intended for use at the rig site to handle casing, tubing and/or drill pipe utilizing API Spec 7K standard rotary slips. The rigid design maintains uniform slip engagement pressure from top to bottom minimizing tendencies to pinch or locally crush suspended pipe.

1.3 Specification

The WOODCO USA 150 Ton Spider meets or exceeds requirements stipulated in API Spec 7K for drilling equipment. The Tapered bowl section of the Spider conforms to the dimensions specified in API Spec 7K for square drive rotary table master bushings.

1.4 Reference Standard

1.5 Material

WOODCO USA manufactures 150 ton Spiders from materials which meet or exceed the requirements of API Spec 7K. All material meets or exceeds the impact testing requirements.

Users should specify any service temperature requirement below -20° C (-4° F).

1.6 Design

WOODCO USA has designed this Spider in such a manner as to eliminate welding as any part of the manufacturing or assembly process for load bearing components.

The removable hinge pin allows complete accessibility of all surface areas, including pin hole I.D.’s, allowing complete periodic magnetic particle inspection. The removable pin retaining chain utilizes cap screws to secure it to both the pin and the body.

An operator need only have small hand tools to completely disassemble and reassemble the Spider.

1.7 Quality

WOODCO USA defines “Product Quality” as conformance to specified requirements. We select suppliers on the basis of their ability to provide materials, products and/or services which conform to WOODCO USA and API specifications.

All individual units must pass inspections during production, and each unit receives a 225 ton load test. All individual units must pass a final magnetic particle examination 24 hours after load test, to acceptance criteria called for in API Spec 7K. Users may have confidence that units will always support the rated capacity.

With frequent lubrication of the pins and tapered bowl, the WOODCO USA 150 Ton Spider should perform continuously without repairs.

Caution:

Users should never perform field welding on any portion of the Spider. Field welding may crack or otherwise degrade the properties of the material.
