Let me begin by saying thank you to our customers, many of you good, solid repeat buyers, and some of you young couples just beginning your exciting journey. Welcome to all of you and thank you for your confidence in our program and our bulls. The cattle industry is one in which we each work hard to reach our individual goals, but also where we all work together to make Canadian beef the best and most nutritious in the world. Cultivating good relationships and mutual respect will go a long way toward helping each other succeed!

As our annual Bull Sale approaches, we are well into calving. At this point I wish to acknowledge our help: Neels, Gerrit and Allan, who help run the ranch from day to day, season to season.

Here at Spring Creek our bulls are developed gently as we strive to provide herd bulls that work in today’s industry under real-world ranching conditions. As breeders, our work begins long before your bull of choice is born, layering genetics that will result in ideal females that will produce the kind of bulls that will make a difference for you at year end. Our cowherd has been selected for over 45 years for optimal body type and size, concentrating on udder quality, soundness, fertility, and disposition. As I walk through the bull pen I admire their powerful, uniform frames: thick sire prospects with lots of hair and testicle. Performance bulls built into a total package. Bulls with outstanding dams and grand dams.

The Black Simmental division speaks to the legacy of ‘McDavid’. Two of his sons have feature sire groups. One can see the consistency and prepotency which ‘McDavid’ and his sons deliver. ‘Denali’ was a feature and high selling bull, going to Doll Simmentals, where they are impressed with his calves. ‘Tesla’, a tremendous performing ¾ bull with phenotype to burn, sold to Rocky Meadows Ranch. Semen interests in both of these sons were subsequently sold after Sale day. Buyers will find feature bulls out of all three of these sires. The sons of ‘Tesla’ will be 7/8 Simmental. When these are bred to purebred Simmental cows, their daughters will be purebred and the sons will be 7/8. The popularity of percentage Simmental cattle in Canada is growing quickly for a variety of reasons.

The Red Simmental division features sons of home raised bulls ‘Spark Plug’ and ‘Blue Chip’, along with the BMS sire, ‘Brisk’. The first sons of ‘Eastwood’, a sire from Schweitzer Simmentals, will also sell. He is a very easy calving sire that leaves some darker red offspring.

Our Angus division features sons of our easy calving herd sire ‘Mindbender’. He has been used heavily here and we will continue to do so. We also have two sons of the immortal ‘Final Answer’ and a ‘Hot Lotto’ that will catch breeders’ attention.

Once again we have a selection of the popular Sim/Angus bulls. Often they are used to maintain the relative values of the two breeds in their cow herd. Feedback suggests they leave very uniform calves.

As we look to the future, there is so much to look forward to and be grateful for. We’ve raised a fine herd and a fine family here on the ranch. Our son Dan and his wife Olga, both Professional Engineers, opened their state-of-the-art 20,000 square foot building north of Moosomin last February. At IJack Technologies, Dan designs oilfield product innovations and sells them to SK, MB, AB, and now Colorado and Texas. For example, their new transfer pump, XFer, was designed by Dan to meet a need in the oil patch, and is one-of-a-kind in the world. Dan and Olga have three children, Vivian, John, and brand-new Kate. Sean, who has a business degree, a CFA, and an MBA in Finance, is Dan’s Chief Data Scientist, working out of Calgary. He is presently writing software and setting up gateways that enable IJack’s products to be remotely controlled from anywhere in the world. Sean’s wife Simina is a partner at Burnet, Duckworth and Palmer in Calgary. At the end of 2019 she received a very prestigious award. Simina has been recognized for her legal expertise in the 2020 edition of The Legal 500 Canada, a global legal directory that ranks law firms and lawyers based on independent research and peer review. Simina is the youngest lawyer from BDP to be recognized. Sean and Simina have a little boy named Jack who has been an avid golfer since he was 18 months old. At the age of three, Jack has a membership at the golf dome and can hit the other end of the dome with his ball! Lauren has a commerce degree and is enjoying selling new builds for Sterling Homes in Calgary. Charlie Power wears #46 for the Stampeders, and runs two businesses in the off season, one in Edmonton and one in Calgary, with his Dad and his brother. Lauren and Charlie bought their first home in Calgary in December. This year’s family picture was taken on Mom’s 100th birthday!

IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty”The goal of this program is again to work with our customers in sharing the risk on bulls that will not work based on factors out of their control. We also want to take more responsibility in seeing a bull through to maturity and ensuring things like feet and legs stand up. A bull purchase is a major investment not just for the future of your herd but in the expectation of a longer productive life of the animal. We also assume there is risk past year one, even though most bulls are only insured in their first year of service. We want to work with our customers through to maturity. The time your bull spends in the Winter Feeding Program will be included in this warranty. If the IPOP Bull Sale “Live Long Bull Warranty” is initiated, it will be paid out in the form of a credit towards the purchase of a bull in the subsequent year’s sale. Purchaser must notify Spring Creek Simmentals, (306) 435-3590 immediately of any problems with or death of a purchased bull(s). Purchaser must employ a licensed veterinarian to treat , diagnose and/or fill out a vet form. If the animal dies, a postmortem may be required. Injury or death due to malicious, wilful or intentional acts or mistreatment by the purchaser or his employees is a fraudulent claim. This is my favorite bull. He is very stylish and yet is a soggy chunk with excellent muscling. I haven’t raised many bulls that look like this guy. His dam is a moderate ‘Lotto’ daughter with an excellent udder. She was IVF’d this past spring, so you will be hearing more from her in the future. You will also be hearing more about his sire, ‘Tesla’, now owned by Niko Grose. After seeing his all his progeny, I plan to use ‘Tesla’s’ semen heavily this coming spring. He came at 94 lbs and 278 days. He is 7/8 Simmental. Retaining 100 doses of owners use semen.

‘T-Man’ was raised by a 12 year old ‘Kansas Tank’ cow. I have multiple daughters of hers in the herd. She also had high selling sons sell to Marin Land & Cattle, Open Shaw Simmentals, and to Trevor Marcinek. Note his stoutness while still maintaining an attractive style. I have been watching his development all summer. His gestation was 286 days. He is 7/8 Simmental.

His dam is a ‘McDavid’ daughter that I flushed this past spring. She is from a strong cow family with good calving ease numbers. This son weighed only 70 lbs from the calving ease sire ‘Excellence’. Many past buyers of these low birth weight hybrid bulls have used them on heifers with very good results. This hybrid may fit that role.

This is a power bull that is very easy to look at. He is in the top 1% for weaning and yearling numbers yet he came at only 88 lbs and 272 days. His adjusted weaning weight was 805 lbs, ranking 1/18 and with a ratio of 111. His dam is one of my best cows, as is her ‘Final Answer’ dam. This is a transplant sib to ‘RRAR 17G’. He doesn’t display quite as much power as his brother but he certainly has the style. Selling 50 doses in 10 dose packages on LFE McDavid 413C. This will be the only semen sold in 2020 in Canada. Semen is stored at Alta Genetics and at Spring Creek.

After keeping the McDavid semen exclusive since he was purchased for $95,000 from Lewis Farms, I have now decided to share his direct influence with the Canadian industry. The acceptance of his first sons to sell was tremendous. ‘Denali’ was sold to Doll Ranch for $46,000, ‘Tesla’ sold to Rocky Meadow Ranch for $30,000, and ‘Duramax’ sold to Silver Lake for $24,000. Fifteen sons sold in my 2018 Sale, averaging nearly $13,000. Many sons have sold to progressive commercial operations such as Geisler Cattle Co and K5 River Ranch. They have multiple sons and they are very happy with the increased performance in their calves.

I am really impressed with the consistency that McDavid puts into his offspring. His sons’ progeny also fit the same mold. When you see the first few calves, you will recognize the rest of them. They have lots of wavy hair, attractive heads, and are vigorous at birth. I believe much of this consistency can be attributed to his great dam, LFE Heaven Sent 30X. Great breeding bulls have great dams. They will then go on to be the heavy weights at weaning and yearling.

McDavid is a performance bull; they won’t be the smallest calves at birth but they may come the quickest. The average gestations for 107 calves born to date has been 281 days for the heifers and 284 for the bulls. In my experience, one almost never has calving difficulties when the gestations are short.

My appreciation of McDavid’s progeny was magnified when his first group of daughters calved out. Once again the gestations were short; heifers calved easily and were instant mothers! The udders on his daughters are exceptional. They are up tight with great teat placement and size. Your inspection is welcome. McDavid can definitely be used to improve udder quality.

I believe McDavid’s legacy will be legendary!
