Message from the Interim Director
Its hard to believe that fall is already here and in the blink of an eye the holidays will be upon us. This autumn brings such an incredible variety of programming and exhibitions you wont want to miss
a thing.
Im sure October 13 17 has already been marked on your calendar for the second Ringling International Arts Festival. If you havent ordered your tickets already, call the box office immediately! Our partners at the Baryshnikov Arts Center are once again bringing artists from around the world to the Ringling Center for the Arts. As part of the festival, there are terrific opportunities for learning more about the arts and exhibitions through RIAF 360 - programming that will be taking place all over the Estate well into the evening. As for holiday programming, we have wonderful options including our annual Holiday Splendor event which will take place on December 2 this year followed by Deck the Halls at Ca dZan, a new fundraiser planned for December 3, offering a rare opportunity to tour the mansion at night and the annual Holiday Swing Courtyard Concert December 9. All surrounded by heartwarming, holiday performances in the Historic Asolo Theater. Add our spectacular exhibitions to the mix,Threads of Gold: Renaissance Tapestries from the Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna, 20th Century Abstract Art from the Ringling Collection,With the Greatest of Ease and Splendid Treasures of the Turkomen Tribes of Central Asia and I cant think of a better place to spend this fall.
Sincerely yours,

New Music NightCages Song Books
November 18, 6:00 p.m.
Meet in the Searing Galleries
John Cages Song Books (1970) consist of 92 solos for voice, ranging from conventionally notated songs to theater pieces, in which simple actions produce sounds that are transformed electronically. For this performance, five soloists will sing selections from the Song Books in simultaneous recitals, each following an independent course through the Searing Galleries. The vast range of the Song Books will provide sonic counterpoint to the modern and contemporary works on display, which articulate the various manifestations of abstraction.
This special New College 50th anniversary event marks New Musics return to the Museum after its landmark first performance in 1998. Free with museum admission.

Romulus Invites the Neighbors to the Combat Games, Brussels, Workshop of Frans Geubels, c. 1560-70. Courtesy of the Kunsthistorisches
Museum, Vienna.
World-renowned for its artistic treasures, the Kunsthistorisches
Museum in Vienna, Austria, houses the art collections formed
over centuries by successive generations of the House of
Hapsburg, Austrias royal family. The tapestry collection of
the Kunsthistorisches Museum is widely known as one of the
greatest in existence.
In the late medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods,
tapestries were among the most prestigious objects owned
by the European elite, their cost surpassing that of sculptures
or paintings. Richly woven with silk, wool, and gold and silver
threads, the eight tapestries in this exhibition were made at
the height of the Renaissance Brussels, Europes foremost
center of tapestry production. They depict one of the most
popular secular themes in the 16th-century repertoire of
Flemish tapestry production the legendary founding of
ancient Rome by the twins, Romulus and Remus.
Six of the eight tapestries are part of a set once owned by the
Emperor Matthias (15571617). Completing the sequence of
the legend are two tapestries from another 16th-century set
in the Kunsthistorisches Museums collection that belonged to
the Emperor Franz I (17081765), husband of Empress Maria
Theresia (17171780). All of the tapestries were recently and
painstakingly restored.
This exhibition is developed by the Kunsthistorisches Museum,
Vienna, and tour organized by International Arts & Artists,
Washington, D.C.

With the Greatest of EaseThrough December 13, 2010
Aerial acts are now considered among the most quintessential of circus acts. however, the flying trapeze was not performed until 1859 when Frenchman Jules Lotard first flew from one suspended bar to another. Before that year, some circuses had featured single trapeze acts, where the performer accomplished acrobatic feats on first, a still bar and later, a swinging one. Once a second bar, the catch bar, was introduced the act was raised high above the rings and became a focal point for the entire performance. The skill and daring of aerial artists have long been popular subjects for circus advertising. With the Greatest of Ease features posters printed in the 19th and 20th centuries featuring some of the most amazing feats performed above the circus ring.
