Remembering the Past— October 1981 President: Steve Stockmar VP: Bob Alder Editor: Carl Hunsaker Bob had a 1/2 page “VP” column and there were 5 technical articles and a three page article on Cars as Invest-ments.

Centerfold was an “at speed” photo of Irv Arenberg’s 1955 XK-140 roadster. The newsletter was 16 pages long. There were several photos from the Jag-uar Club’s Driver’s School in Aspen. Local advertisers included F & R Im-ports, Crest Motors, Foreign & Sports Cars Inc., Denver Jaguar, T’s Sunrise, Adam’s Import & Heads by Paul.

Boy, did this month go by fast. Actually the whole summer has gone by fast. Everyone has been so busy with car events this summer. Highlands Games was great, followed quickly by the Conclave. As I write this, Deanie and I are packing for our trip to Atlanta. It is shaping up to be a fun event. We are hearing that there should be around 150 Jaguars. We will have a full report for the October meeting and newsletter. We still have several great events coming up. The one that is new for this year is the Mystery Tour be-ing put together by Alice Braly, Deanie Kennedy and Pat Grossman. They won’t tell any of us their plans. They just keep telling us that it should be a lot of fun. For those of you who get the press magazines, it looks like the Advanced Lightweight Coupe that we saw come through Denver several months ago has become the next generation XK. It will continue with the XK name.

The Willetts, Faraces, and Deanie and I went up to the Colorado Grand. We ran into Dave and Dalene Anderson. They were former club members some time ago. They now own a Ferrari. I couldn’t tell you which one, but Joe and Rogers could. They have a much wider knowledge of the other marques than I do (see story below). As to Jaguars, which I do know rather well, we saw D-Type, XKD 520 and the yellow D-Type XKD 503, formally owned by the Belgian Motor Company. This D-Type was raced in the 1955 Le Mans.

There were about half a dozen Jaguars at the Grand. Several XK 120s and 140s. An SS 100. We heard that there were 4 D-Types and a C-Type than ran the Grand but we only got to see two of them.

A couple of the Colorado Grand Jaguars did come to the Conclave the following day. We talked with one of the owners. He said that he and his daughter washed their XK 120 in the dark in an effort to get it ready for the Conclave.

The Colorado Grand by the Willetts This event ran 1,000 miles thru the state with 75 entries (175 applica-tions were received) to run this race/tour of pre-1961 Sportscars. They had a great mix of pre-war and semi-modern Sportscars on hand for Saturday's "Concours d'Non-Elegance.....oil, dirt and general road grime cannot be removed for this "Show". This year they had 41 English Cars of which 17 were Jaguars. Some of the more interesting Sportscars(besides the Jags) were (2) '52 Allard J2X's (their main racing rival in the 50's, a '50 Kurtis Sport-USA); '54 Bristol 408; '49 HRG; '26 & '31 Bentleys; and the all time favorite English Sportscar: '59 Daimler SP250, nicknamed at this tour, the "Catfish Face".

The German's were represented by '59 BMW 507; '38 BMW 328 and a '55 Mercedes 300 SL Gull-wing with 26,000 original miles and fitted luggage. The Italians were represented by the very rare '61 OSCA 1600 GTS

Zagato;'57 Maserati 200S; '34 Maserati 6C; '56 Ma-serati A6G Zagato and '53 Siata 208 S Spider ( Mo-tor: 2.0 liter 8 V Type, The Italian's thought Ford owned the name V-8). The normal Ferrari's of the '50 & '60's were there. Jerry Seinfield was a regular at this event for years with his Porsche 550 Spyder (James Dean type), but after 9/11 he has stayed away. Next year, there will be an entirely different field of Sportscars for this event, so plan a trip up to Vail. see photos of this event on page 5

Editor’s Comments by Gordon Kenney What a great time to be a sports car enthusiast. Jaguar’s 2007 XK sports car (what happened to 2006?) is scheduled to be at your local dealer soon. It’s an all-new design that is larger in most every di-mension than the XK8 it replaces but is faster and more fuel efficient. Design details trace back to the early XK and XK-E models. Both the convertible and roadster are scheduled to be on sale by Spring of 2006 so gather up $85,000 and get yours. Good news also on the other end of the sports car market as the Pontiac Solstice is receiving good re-views from the motoring press. With a base price one penny less than $20K’s it good to see another entry in the market currently occupied only by the Miata. And the 3rd generation Miata (called the MX-

5) is also a winner and may have paddle shifters for the automatic (Shirley may like that). For the ultra high-performance fans one can now buy a Corvette ZO6 with a showroom stock top speed in excess of 190 mph and 0-60 times around 4 seconds. All for about $70K—a true performance bargain. The conclave was again a big success and it’s al-ways stimulating to see the wide variety of English cars available. It’s also very obvious that the cost of the cars seems to bear no relationship to the enjoy-ment that they bring to their owners. Isn’t that nice! It’s election time for the RMJC so give serious thought as to how you can serve the club in 2006.

Kitty Litter & Website by Rob Hazlehurst Hopefully by now all of you are familiar with the Rocky Mountain Jaguar Club’s website and find it to be a useful re-source. You may not be aware, how-ever, that our parent…the Jaguar Clubs of North America…maintains a world-class website at JCNA.com. This website covers Jaguar news at the national level, including what is going on with Jaguar cars and what is going on with all the Jaguar clubs across the country.

The site includes a calendar of all JCNA sanctioned events (rally, slalom and concours), and each club has its own page on the website with basic information about the club, the officers, and the official results from sanctioned events. In fact, if you participated in an RMJC concours or slalom since

2001 your scores are available on our club’s page. Please take a few minutes to check out the JCNA website…there is a wealth of information available! Cheers! Rob

Minutes from the September 13th Monthly Meeting at Piccolo’s by Marty Cohen Steve Kennedy called the meeting to order at 7:33 PM. He pointed out that elections for Officers and Board Members would be held at the Novem-ber General Meeting. Treasurer’s Report – Al Vrooman reported that for the year to date we have $1,030 in the check-ing account. Newsletter costs will be discussed at the next Board Meeting. Secretary’s Report – Marty Cohen reported that the August 9th General Meeting Minutes were pub-lished in the September Newsletter.

Membership Secretary’s Report – Deanie Ken-nedy reported that we currently have 114 member-ships, an increase of 4 from last month. New members attending the meeting introduced themselves. Frank Oakley has a 1986 XJSC which he hopes to have running soon. Dave Watts has a 1971 series 3 E-type. Alex Rubin introduced his friend, Mary Davidson, who has a 2000 red XKR Newsletter Editor – Gordon Kenney printed 245 September Newsletters. Gordon suggested that we consider trimming duplicate discussion of events in the Newsletter to allow the inclusion of more pic-tures. Bob Grossman recommended doubling the current annual cost of $25 for business card ads. This will be discussed at the next Board Meeting. Highland Games – Dennis Orr, our official Games Scotsman, told us that there were 5 Jaguars at the Games. Rob Hazelhurst took 2nd place overall.

Webmaster – Rob Hazel-hurst has updated the web site with Conclave details. Chief Judge – Gary George expects that up to 600 cars will attend the British Car Conclave. The Organizing Committee has hired people to patrol the area to ensure that unauthorized cars do not

park on private property. Volunteers are needed. Please be there at 7 AM to help with registration. Events – The Oct. 9th “Mystery Tour” was discussed and people encouraged to register early. The Chili Cook-off has been re-scheduled to Novem-ber 5th. On November 12th, we will have a tour to a car collection in Long-mont, followed by a brunch of Southwestern Carib-bean food.. Old Car Council Meeting

The Sept. 7th meeting was called to order by Presi-dent William Rosenbach at 7:43 pm at the St.Francis Hospital meeting room, 825 E.Pikes Peak Ave., Colorado Springs. 20 member clubs were represented (not a quorum) Legislative matters: Leo Boyle discussed the prob-lems we are having with collector car titles in two areas. One was the issue that some county clerks will assign the current year to a reproduction vehicle while others will use the year of the “donor” car. You could end up with a 2005 Jaguar D-Type!

The other is the issue of roadworthiness inspections required on lost title vehicles and there appears to be significant variability between different counties. These issues are currently being worked on by OCC representatives. Also mentioned was that “The Swap Meet and Car Show“ lost money this year (for the first time) due in part to terrible weather that weekend. The OCC will ask that members pay dues early next year to help the cash flow situation. Summarized from minutes submitted by Richard Fritz

From Pebble Beach 2005 Thought you and our fellow Jag owners would enjoy seeing a one-off Pininfarina Spy-der 1978 Jag XJ. This car was built only 3 years after the intro of the XJS Coupe. This car was shown at Pebble Beach as cele-bration of Pininfarina's 75th anniversary along with a host of other Alfa one-off bat wings, Lancia's, Ferrari's and so on. At first glance I thought I was viewing a concept car for Corvette. Enjoy! Bill Veio

Ride the Rockies and the English Motoring Conclave by Alan Magnuson The 22nd Annual Colorado English Mo-toring Conclave was held on September 17 & 18, 2005 in Oak Park, Arvada.

Saturday’s Ride the Rockies tour routed 122 cars and motorcycles through mountain vistas and the early fall color change of aspen groves. The Conclave hosts English vehicles of all types, pre-war to modern, from motorcycles to sports cars to four-wheel drives to luxury. Highlights of this show were a 1927 Rolls Royce Phantom I, a 1938 S.S. 100 formerly owned by the first NBC Today Show host Dave Garroway, a 1953 Allard J2X, and a 1972 McLaren M8-F Can-Am racer. Sunday was a beautiful day for the Conclave with clear skies and 86 degrees. We had over 550 par-ticipants attend this year’s English Motoring Con-clave. The largest contingents were MG’s with 114 cars, Triumphs with 111, and Jaguars with 67 cars. Also participating were Austin, Austin-Healey, AC, Bentley, Jensen, Lotus, Morris, Mini, Morgan, Rolls-Royce, Rover, Sunbeam, TVR, vintage racers, and most other British cars and bikes that you could think of including an old Reliant. Results of the judging will be in the Nov. Cat Tales

The vendors, Swap meet, and pipe band all added to the flavor of a great British car day in the middle of the USA. Next years will be even better!

The RMJC Racing Beat by Bob Grossman

This is the last Racing Beat for this year. I’m both delighted and dismayed that the season is coming to an end. The Mighty Roar Racing Mk2 has performed well, but doubly so as the car has been double driven all year long with only minor protest. That’s 3 hours of full throttle per-formance every racing event. Delighted because

I now get some time for other projects, not to mention a respite from the expense of providing, prepping, tun-ing and transporting the racer to the various events. Not bad for a 45 year old vintage racer. I want to thank all of our membership who have supported the team’s racing efforts and Pat and I hope to see more of you getting excited about and exploring the performance aspects of your Jaguars. The Pueblo Enduro is next weekend and the Mighty Roar Mk2 is undergoing its usual race prep this week-end. The enduro is a great event as the format is different from the typical races run all year long. Saturday consists of the usual practice, qualifying and preliminary sprint races. Sunday is the enduro proper and has but two groups, running for 1-1/2 hour each. The open wheelers have a session and the production cars have a session. One ‘driver change’ is mandatory. Some teams have but one driver but that entry will still have to pit, the driver has to unbelt and get out of the car, refuel if needed, and get back in the car and con-tinue. The Mighty Roar Mk2 has two drivers so we will be doing actual driver changes at the pit stops. I think two will do as the fuel cell is but 8 gallons in capacity and I know we can reliably pump 6 of that. Despite be-ing de-rated and running only two carbs, the racer consumes 12 gallons of 110 octane per hour. Now, if we can just get the last set of tires to go the distance… Check your Victory Lane Magazine for the results – hopefully we’ll see the Mk2 come home as a class winner! Keep yer revs up! Joe & Mary are running the Great Race in 2006 ! From the Brighton Press: Next Summer Joe and Mary Farace are going to drive from the East to the West coasts. Nothing new here, right? Except they will be driving from Philadelphia to San Rafael California in a 1953 Packard while racing against 99 other antique and classic cars in Great Race 2006. You might be surprised to learn that the movie The Great Race is based on an actual motorsports event. The original “Great Race” took place in 1908 when automobiles from different countries raced 22,000 miles around the world from New York’s Times Square to Paris, France. In 2006, the 24th annual Great Race features automobiles manufactured in 1961 or earlier in a coast-to-coast rally race across the back roads of America from Pennsylvania to California. The finish line is in downtown San Rafael on the site where George Lucas filmed his 1973 hit movie “American Graffiti.” "Mary and I are very excited about participating in Great Race 2006," said Joe Farace, a local resi-dent who is a photographer/writer. "It will give us a chance to show more than one million people who’ll see the event how a couple from Brighton Colorado competes against classic cars from around the world, including those supported by big bucks NASCAR teams.” In addition to making forty stops at small towns across the nation during the 14-day odyssey, Great Race 2006 will be televised on TV’s Speed channel. The Farace’s will be competing in a 1953 Packard Clipper that is being prepared specifically for the

2200 mile journey. MediaStreet.com, a leading supplier of ink-jet printer ink and media, is on-board as a partial sponsor, but Joe and Mary are looking for another sponsor to complete the full sponsorship package required by Great Race. They are also looking for local sponsors to support their effort with parts, tools, and service need to prepare a fifty plus year old classic to take on the best classic cars in America. If your company would like to support their effort contact Joe at 303-659-9555 for information on how to help. RMJC members can purchase official Great Race Cloisonné pins depicting their Packard for $20 that will go to their “gas fund”. “The motto of Great Race is ‘to finish is to win’ and that’s exactly what our goal is, Mary said, “While we would like to win the rookie class, we’ll pull into San Rafael with a smile on our faces knowing that we did our best with a little help from our friends.”
