Year 6 Mini Lessons & High School On Wednesday 27th February, Mrs. Catalogna and the Year 6 students attended Richmond High School to sample High School taster lessons. I would like to report back that the students enjoyed themselves greatly and Mrs. Catalogna spoke to me of outstanding behavior. It is a credit to Richmond High School that they offer our students the opportunity to participate in mini lessons regardless of the High School our Year 6 students choose. The Richmond High School information evening will be held on Tuesday, 12th March 2019, between 5.30 and 7pm. I encourage all Stage 3 parents to attend and get to know one of our local High Schools. Penrith Panthers – NRL CLINIC On Monday 4TH March our students from Year 1-6 were lucky enough to be included in football skills and activities from the NRL and Penrith Panthers Football Club. Dean and Daniel did a great job in organising the students to enjoy some skills and strategies and gain an idea of how NRL works. Once again I am proud to say our school displayed some wonderful behaviour and had fun joining in the activities.

Start Smart Commonwealth Bank Year 1-6 Lessons On Tuesday of this week the Commonwealth Bank ran a short session with our classes discussing the important skill of saving money. The skills learnt from this session can go hand in hand with setting budgets which is addressed in the Mathematics curriculum. Our aim is for the children of Castlereagh Public School to become financially aware and identify the need to work towards goals rather than having the mindset of using credit for instant purchases. Meet the Teacher On Thursday, 21st February, we held our Meet the Teacher evening. Thank you to the parents who attended and the staff for your support in staying back late on the night. It is a great opportunity to meet your child’s class teacher and discuss their teaching program and activities for the year. If you were unable to attend and you would like to have the opportunity to speak with your child’s classroom teacher please either send in a letter requesting a meeting or phone the office to organise a time that suits you both. School Cross Country Carnival Castlereagh Public School will be holding our Cross Country Carnival on Friday, 29th March 2019. All students will be participating. Parents, friends and community members are more than welcome to attend this whole school event. It will be held within the school grounds, weather permitting. The event will take approx. 2 hours. Students will run the following distances; 4-7 Years Boys and Girls 1000m 8/9 Years Boys and Girls 2000m 10 Years Boys and Girls 2000m 11 Years Boys and Girls 3000m 12/13 Years Boys and Girls 3000m Our Year 6 students will be hosting a fundraiser on the day. Tell Them From Me In Term 1 2019, our school is taking part in the Tell Them From Me student survey. The survey will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and

A quality education in a caring, small school environment Page 6

around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help them improve. The survey is completed on-line and is run by an independent research company, The Learning Bar, which specialises in school-based surveys. Staff in schools will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. To ensure confidentiality, participating students will receive a unique username and password. The survey typically takes 30 minutes or less to complete and will be administered by the school during normal school hours. Once the surveys are completed by students, reports are prepared and in most cases are available to schools within three business days. Students from Year 4 to Year 6 have the opportunity to complete this survey. If you would like your child to not participate in this survey could you please make contact with your child’s classroom teacher through either written communication or a verbal discussion with them? Thank you for your ongoing support, as surveys provide us with feedback on how we can work more productively to meet the needs of the students and community. There will be a parent survey which will be available later in the year. If you do not want your child in Year 4-6 to participate could you please inform Miss Li, Mrs Catalonga or Mrs Sutton. Premiere’s Reading Challenge Welcome to the NSW Premier's Reading Challenge which began Monday this week. The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

Crunch and Sip Castlereagh Public School is a certified ‘Crunch and Sip’ school. All classes have a ‘Crunch and Sip’ break during the day where children are encouraged to eat fruit and sip water. A tally of the fruit eaten is kept as it is one of the activities the children can complete to obtain their Healthy Lifestyle Challenge, Healthy Badge.

Waste Free Wednesdays Every Wednesday is a waste free day at CPS. This means whatever food and drink wrappings/scraps that the children have that day must be taken home with their lunches, a class tally is kept of the number of children having ‘nude foods’! These are foods that have no wrapping but come in a reusable container. Thank you for your continued support for

these two programs. Ice Blocks & Drinks Ice blocks will be sold Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at lunch time. They range from 60c to $2 in price. Water will be sold at $2 a bottle, also on Monday, Wednesday & Friday.

Clean up Schools Day

On Friday 1st March, the students and teachers at Castlereagh Public School participated in Clean Up Schools Day.

Everyone did a fantastic job in helping to tidy up our school. As part of the day each class participated in a lesson about waste.
