We believe that everything can be made better. This season we’ve concentrated our creative team’s attention on rain gear to protect you in the worst conditions. But we didn’t expect to come up with foul-weather gear this versatile. You may end up using some of these pieces for dry conditions. They’re that good.

For cyclocross we’re bringing performance advantages by helping you in the pre-race preparation to give you a boost in the crucial sprint from the line and the first few minutes of the race.

Throughout this book Castelli athletes will give their pro tips for the perfet winter riding kit and layering gained over years of training and racing in cold and wet weather conditions. What we call Foul Weather Race Equipment.

ANTICIPATIONYou’ve been waiting for it since the end of road season. Colored leaves begin to spin down from trees, and clouds darken. You show up at the race beneath a cold, gray sky that threatens to inundate the course with rain within the hour.

It’s time to layer up and get your bike from the van to the team tent as quickly as possible. Rain begins to fall heavily as you make a few last-minute adjustments to tire pressure.

Just as suddenly, the rain lets up and it’s time to pre-ride the course. You don your warm-up layers and head out for some quick recon.

Rocky run-up here, off-camber section there: you’ve got it figured out. Your breath steams in the cool air as you hear your call-up. At the line, you quickly shed your layers. You’re warm and ready to put in your 60 minutes. The wait is over.

TIME TO RETHINK RAIN JACKETS Cycling rain jackets have until recently really been repurposed mountaineering jackets: bulky construction, mountaineering fabrics, insufficient breathability, terrifying aerodynamics.

The new jacket had to be lighter, more compact to fit in a pocket, and more aero than ever before. So we also developed an extreme stretch version of the fabric to use on the shoulders, elbows and side panels. The resulting jacket fits close to the body and has minimal volume, yet without being too tight and binding when in the tuck position.

We thought through all the details. Like easy opening and closing cuffs. Like the fact that you don’t want to pull up the jacket to access your jersey pockets when it’s raining. Like making the zipper easy to open and close even though it’s completely waterproof. There’s so much innovation in this jacket that we think we’ve just invented another category changer.

GABBA-LIKE CONSTRUCTION The Gabba changed the way you dress for moderate conditions. So we brought Gabba-like construction to our top-of-the-line full-on rain jacket. But we needed some new technology. So we worked with eVent® to develop the lightest ever (and exclusive) version of their PTFE high-breathability membrane. We tested that with Team Garmin-Sharp riders and got unanimous approval.

PURE PERFORMANCE: LESS IS MOREThis jacket is an exercise in reducing the rain jacket to the bare minimum. You need a high-performance fabric, so we worked with eVent® to make a lighter version of what they’re already supplying to some WorldTour teams. We cut it close to the body to minimize flapping fabric and to improve aerodynamics. Then we taped the seams to make it fully waterproof and gave it a waterproof YKK® zipper. Then we stopped.

BRING IT ONDon’t let the threat of rain keep you from riding—or, even worse, make you ride your trainer. We’ve used our exceptional high-stretch but lightweight Torrent waterproof fabric and engineered a seam-sealed jacket that easily stuffs in a jersey pocket. It will keep you totally dry from the outside, and the stretch fit makes it comfortable and aero. You will give up some breathability compared to our Tempesta Rain or Pavé jackets, but this is the ideal jacket to bring along when rain threatens.

7X(AIR) We use the best winter membrane fabrics on the market but still find ourselves wanting more breathability. That’s why we invented 7x(Air). We start with a fully wind- and waterproof external layer and then quilt it to a fleece inner layer using the trapunto technique. This results in an extremely stretchy wind-resistant fabric, but the stitch holes give just the right amount of air permeability and allow for a continuous exchange of air on the inside of the garment, which carries away moisture much better than fully sealed fabrics.

This actually makes it warmer because there’s less unwanted air flowing on the inside of the garment. There must be a downside, right? We definitely wouldn’t take this out on a rain day, since rain will come through the quilting stitching, though the fabric is DWR treated and will shed light spray. But it’s ideal for your five-hour base fitness rides as well as your one-hour lunchtime world championship rides. Breathability is good.

IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTERIn 2013 we invented the 7x(Air) fabric—a proprietary windproof fabric that provides seven times the air permeability of existing membrane fabrics. In 2014 we invented the Alpha jacket with a number of innovative construction techniques to revolutionize the performance and comfort of a winter cycling jacket. ALPHA CONSTRUCTIONWith the double-layer front you have far greater control over ventilation, and when you’re working hardest you can open the external zip to allow airflow to dry the thermal layer. It’s hard to imagine until the first time you crest a hill and close the zipper back up and realize you’re totally dry. You’ve never felt anything like it.

WE STARTED WITH A BLANK SLATE IN DESIGNING OUR MOST INNOVATIVE JACKET EVER Throw out everything you think you know about cycling jackets and redesign the way a jacket should be made. Or possibly how they’ll all be made in a few years when everyone else follows our lead once again. The name Alpha denotes the first in a series. In these products we’re introducing several new techniques and fabrics to construct cool and cold weather jackets.

We’ve focused on two perennial problems with cycling jackets and wind jerseys. First is ventilation. With our latest fabrics we can essentially build a winter jacket that will keep you warm in all but the most extreme conditions with just a base layer underneath. But when you open the front zipper you get a blast of cold air at the top of your chest, while the rest of your body remains too hot.

In Alpha we’ve detached the insulation layer from the windproof layer so that you can open the windproof layer to let air in to ventilate and help evaporate moisture. Riding these pieces shows how effective it is at regulating temperature and comfort while helping to keep you drier.

The second focus area is all the openings. At the waist we have a new fabric and construction that lays completely flat, is streamlined for aerodynamics, yet when you drop into the riding position it follows your body without binding or billowing. At the wrists we have a new flat raw-edge construction that interfaces perfectly with our gloves to keep drafts out and to improve comfort. At the collar we have a new articulated construction that follows the bends in your neck whether you’re standing or riding in the lowest aero position.

NOT EXACTLY WHAT WE GIVE TO THE PROSThe Team Cannondale-Garmin and Team MTN-Qhubeka pros get our full Windstopper® jacket, and they say they like it. But they also have 5% body fat. Or less. Some of the rest of us get too hot riding in the pro jackets. So we made this one with our Warmer fabric on the back panel. This allows for more air exchange and lets off a lot of heat, making this ideal for rides in midler conditions, although we happily take it down to 6°-7°. This is an ideal jacket for fall and spring in colder climates, or a full winter piece if you’re lucky enough to live where it doesn’t get that cold.

RANGE EXTENDERThough we strive to make the best jackets in the world, we resist pulling out our jackets in the fall until absolutely necessary. We like the breathability and freedom of movement that you get in a thermal jersey. With the Secondo Strato Jersey we’ve just extended the temperature range you can cover before donning your jacket in the fall. your tights or leg warmers go inside your booties.

Nano Flex changes that. When it's raining, put the

tights or warmers over the booties to shed rain to the

outside of the bootie and help keep your feet dry.

Training in Denmark throughout the winter months

can be tough. With cold, rain, sleet and snow, it takes

three pairs of gloves to get through the winter. A fully

thermal windproof and breathable glove with a wide

temperature range is ideal for cold days and even with

some light rain.

For riding in proper rain, a truly waterproof glove like

the Tempesta is essential. There’s little chance of

cold hands, but then I usually add an inner glove for

extra warmth. For mild winter days, I use the either

the lightweight Prima or Lightness glove. The Prima is

my all-time favorite for early spring races; its minimum

bulk and silicone grip on the palm gives you plenty of

control over the brakes and feel on the handlebar.

WHEEL SPRAY NO PROBLEMIf you’re riding without fenders you know that the lower legs get wheel spray from both front and back and are one of the hardest spots to keep dry. So we made the lower part of this leg warmer with waterproof reflective fabric so that the spray will just run off. You wear this warmer with your favorite shorts, underneath the Tempesta 3/4 pant, and OVER your waterproof booties. You get ventilation under the pant, and because the warmer is placed over the bootie, the rain just runs right off. The large reflective area on your moving legs is highly visible for extra safety, and in our testing this piece has become a favorite for night rides.

SUN TO SUMMITThe sun is up, bright and cold. It’s a perfect morning to get out and put in some miles on the mountain. Once outside of town the pines thin, the road tilts up, and the real climb begins.

There are times when getting out to ride can be an elusive window of free time in a day structured by schedules. Life gets in the way. But that isn’t this day.

You climb steadily, watching not so much the road but taking in the expansive vistas that you can only experience at elevation. The summit is a both a relief and a reminder: the way down, although exhilarating, will be far too short.

IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTERIn 2013 we invented the 7x(Air) fabric—a proprietary windproof fabric that provides seven times the air permeability of existing membrane fabrics.

In 2014 we invented the Alpha jacket with a number of innovative construction techniques to revolutionize the performance and comfort of a winter cycling jacket.

For 2015 we bring those two technologies together in the Elemento 2 7x(Air) jacket.

ALPHA CONSTRUCTIONAlpha construction is the result of totally rethinking the construction of a winter jacket. On the front we’ve separated the windproof layer from the insulating layer, giving you far greater control over ventilation, and when you’re working hardest you can open the external zip to allow airflow to dry the thermal layer. It’s hard to imagine until the first time you crest a hill and close the zipper back up and realize you’re totally dry. You’ve never felt anything like it.

7X(AIR)7x(Air) is a technique we invented in which we quilt our WindShear fabric to give added air permeability through thousands of quilting holes. You won’t actually feel the windflow; you’ll just feel drier.

WE STARTED WITH A BLANK SLATEAt the waist we have a new fabric and construction that lies completely flat and is streamlined for aerodynamics, yet when you drop into the riding position it follows your body without binding or billowing. At the wrists we have a new flat raw-edge construction that interfaces perfectly with our gloves to keep drafts out and improve comfort. At the collar we have a new articulated construction that follows the angle of your neck whether you’re standing or riding in the lowest aero position.

NEARLY THE IDEAL JACKETThis would be the ideal jacket but we didn’t design it for extreme cold or rainy conditions. But that’s what makes it so good for most of your fall/winter/spring riding.
