AN IB/PYP WORLD SCHOOL

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL H. Jeannine Hetzler

The expression, “time flies when you’re having fun” holds firmly again. Upon our return from spring break, many of us were stunned by the realization that we have eight weeks of school remaining. Cassingham students and faculty are excited for this final nine weeks and our many culminating celebrations of learning!

Two such celebrations are coming up soon. Our Grade 4 students culminate their studies of economic concepts (entrepreneurship, sustainability) and the informed action taken by an incredible project, Partners in Conservation (PIC) with their annual Market Day. Students are creating business plans for creating and marketing a sustainable good or service. All proceeds from their efforts go directly to PIC. Their Market Day will be the morning of April 13th. Please join us to support these young entrepreneurs and the work of Partners in Conservation.

Our Grade 2 students have been studying artistic expression, movement and playwriting within their exploration of how to solve social problems. They have written, choreographed, revised and polished three original plays to highlight proactive solutions. This multifaceted project is supported through our Bexley Education Foundation. ...kindergarteners are learning about our world through a study of living things? We will research

to find out all about animals. We will celebrate the end of our unit by taking a field trip to the Columbus Zoo!

...first graders will be discovering that tools can be used to determine where people have been, where they are, and where they are going in their next unit, Where We Are in Place and Time? They will be making personal timelines, discovering how to make and use maps after they go on a mysterious treasure hunt, and learning about how land forms and climates affect the way people live in different parts of the world!

...second graders will be inquiring how patterns help you make predictions in our How the World Works unit? Through the exploration of magnets, contact and non-contact forces, we will learn laws about our natural world. We will also learn about patterns in our reading and writing! Also, we would like to extend a special thanks to BEF and the Thomas A. Boster Fund for their support in our How We Express Ourselves unit. With their help we were able to have a playwright turn our stories into scripts and work with Ballet Met to explore expression through movement. We hope you are able to see our anti-bullying plays in action on April 6!

...third graders are focused on Earth's precious resources and the impact humanity has on everything from water, to soil, to air? Spring is in the air and Earth Day isn't that far away. In our

April is quite a fun month in Music!

Kindergarten and first grade students are continuing to explore How We Ex-press Ourselves through music and dance, and will be learning several folk dances over the next few weeks.

Second graders are performing their class plays on April 6, and are spending time polishing their music and sound effects for the plays. They have a great, final song to present, accompanied by guitar and drums…parents, you’re not going to want to miss it!

Third graders are working hard on their recorders. You should be hearing the lovely sounds as we prepare to play for the Art Hop in May.

Fourth graders are traveling the world and exploring international music, songs, and dance. We’ve been tinikling in the Philippines, singing fun French songs, playing a Maori stick game from New Zealand, and still have several continents to explore.

Spotlight in Art!

Second graders are currently working with Mr. Hoy from Columbus Sign and Designed Evolution on a big project! They are learning how to think like artists/designers and exploring the ways in which Mr. Hoy works with a client(s) to solve a problem. Second graders have measured the Art room, used technology to look at new materials, col-or and designs for their vision of the Art room. These students will be in charge of designing the Art room in their own way. This will be a great experi-ence for our students to understand what it takes to work collaboratively and crea-tively in the real world. Thanks Mr. Hoy and Colum-bus Sign and Designed Evolu-tion for all of your help!

During the third quarter alone, there were a total of 629 visits to the Cassingham Maker Space. That av-erages to about 63 students a week.

And in total this year, there have been 1,234 visits.

We sure have some creative kids!

As the culminating experience of the International Bac-calaureate Primary Years Programme, our Cub Ca-dets in Grade 5 will be participating in their IB PYP Exhibition on Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. all around Cassingham. From now until then, students will be busy applying all of the skills and knowledge they have learned the past six years. Students will ex-plore an interest, do research, and then decide on an action that will help and/or educate others, and then carry out that action!

All children go through phases with their friends. Sometimes they will belong to several groups and have lots of friends. Sometimes they will only have a close group of a few friends. And sometimes they’ll shy away from being social with anyone. Making and keeping friends is a skill. Here are some ways to help your child make good choices about friendship while they are growing up.

Ask what he/she likes about his/her friends. Thinking about why he or she has the friends he or she does can help her make good decisions now and in the future.

Ask why? Talk about why your child stops spending time with a friend. Talk about it. Talk to your child about friendship you’ve had-why certain one have lasted a long time, why

others didn’t work out, and what you like about your friends. Discuss priorities. Ask your child what they value in a friendship, and talk about what you value.
