AN IB/PYP WORLD SCHOOL

A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL H. Jeannine Hetzler

As we all strive to foster independence and ensure the safety of Cassingham students, Cassingham’s Building Leadership Team and I would like to emphasize two reminders.

1) Staff and faculty arrive at 8:15 to begin their work day; we do not supervise our playground before or after-school. Unsupervised children on our playground are asked to head to the café for breakfast or to our front lawn, before 8:25. Additionally, we remind children to stick to the dismissal plans established with their parents and not arrange for playdates without their parent’s knowledge.

2) Each classroom has a morning arrival routine, you can foster your child’s independence by allowing them to demonstrate their understanding of their morning routines and celebrating their steps toward independence.

Teachers will have two days of professional development next week, keep in mind that only teachers will come to school on November 6th and 7th. We’ll be continuing to hone our knowledge base around Foundational Reading Skills, 40 Developmental Assets and revising our IB-Primary Years Program units of study to better meet the needs of all learners. There will not be a LATE START Tuesday this month. Continued thanks for valuing this professional work!

Thank you for the fabulous interest in Cassingham PTO’s event this past month around parenting during this screen-filled, technology-driven era. We’ll continue this conversation with students with our Online Safety Seminar next week for students in grades 3-5. Additionally, all students will hear from Jim Bisenius on November 28. ...kindergarteners, in our Who We Are unit, will share our family traditions by inviting our families into the classroom? Our traditions will become the focus of our writing.

...first graders will be working with Mr. Pinciotti in art class to design their Bexlandia buildings during their How We Organize Ourselves unit? They will also receive some expert advice about how a town is organized from a parent

volunteer who also happens to be a city planner! During writing workshop, the students will be learning about opinion writing and will write a piece about why YOU would want to live in Bexlandia!

...second graders will be sharing their learning about endangered animals at our very own Cassingham Zoo? In connection with our Sharing the Planet unit students will research an animal, create a model of their animal out of recycled goods and display the animal in its habitat (created in art)! Please join us on Friday, November 10 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. to check out all our hard work!

...third graders are studying Who We Are: Life, Behavior, Growth, and Change of Living things? We to experienced two separate wildlife speaker events recently including a visit from the Ohio Wildlife Center sponsored by our very own PTO. Many thanks to PTO and their mini-grants for funding this great learning opportunity!

...fourth graders explored How the World Works by visiting Battelle Darby Metro Park and the Orton

Geological Museum at THE Ohio State University? Students continue their study of earth by exploring the processes that shape the planet (water, natural disasters, erosion, weather, etc.). After an in-depth investigation of tall tales, myths, and legends, 4

th graders

composed their own versions and created Tall-Tale heroes in art class. During our next unit, Where we Are in Place and Time, students will explore the geographical, economic, and cultural regions of the United States and Ohio.

...fifth graders will learn how to share the planet by studying biomes, designing their own biome for a zoo Town meeting, and even visiting the Columbus Zoo for inspiration and background knowledge?!

A big THANK YOU to all who donated to the Red Cross for Hurricane Relief by participat-ing in pajama day, selling lemonade, donating or buying pumpkins, gourds, and bails of hay, etc. We raised nearly $700.00!

Also, THANKS for Trick or Treating for UNICEF! We will update you on our grand total when we collect all the boxes.

November is our month to celebrate Charity New-sies! All students in grades 1-5 are invited to visit the headquarters with us on Thursday, Nov. 2nd. Remember to do some chores at home to raise money for Charity Newsies. Our Harvest Assembly where we celebrate all the work we did will be on Tuesday, Nov. 21! Please join us!!

¡Hola! This month in the Spanish classroom, we are focusing on greetings, expressing feelings, introduc-ing ourselves & others, days of the week, and more. We will learn about Guatemala and Hondu-ras. Some great avenues in which students can practice their Spanish outside of the classroom are; going over worksheets sent home, practicing with a friend or family member, playing a Spanish game, or watching a brief Spanish video. Check out Duo-lingo or The Spanish School Bus for a fun and inter-active way to learn at home. Please contact me at [email protected] with questions or concerns. ¡Hasta luego!

I would like to thank all the third graders and their parents for all the work they did with bike safety. I know it can be a pain to get the bikes to school but it is worth it when all students learn how to bike safe-ly. In November we will be working on the following activities in the gym:

Kindergarten-1st - We continue to work on following directions and keeping our hands to ourselves. We are beginning to introduce group games and work-ing with classmates.

2nd-3rd - We are working on improving our upper body strength by climbing or swinging on the rope. We also introduce stilts and Pogo stick as forms of exercise during class.

4th - We introduce the rope as a way to improve our upper body strength. We continue to work on treat-ing all our classmates kindly.

5th - We continue to work on treating our class-mates with respect and playing safely when in phys-ical education. This continues to be a work in pro-gress. We also introduce going to the fitness room to learn different ways to improve our physical fit-ness.

You can find kindergarteners, 1st graders and 2nd graders working on fall themed lessons. Pumpkins, fall leaves, & Native Americans are many of the themes and areas of study for those grades. They are also experimenting with new media and noticing the differences, physical as well as its application, between each they choose.

Grades 3 through 5 are studying different artists and time periods, from Pop Art to Street Art, 4th and 5th graders are debating the importance and messages behind the works of art during these times. Third graders are diving into an integrated lesson, in the library, where they are researching the life of an artist and also looking at the artistic portfolio and techniques their artist tried to develop in their lifetime.

Cassingham’s Maker Space is open as a recess/lunch option. Children may bring their lunch, watch STEM videos, and then get to work building with KEVA planks, dominoes, Legos, K’Nex, or Zoob blocks. They may also get inventive or crafty and let their imaginations run wild, recycling recyclables into more amazing creations. Ms. Kuder would be grateful for supplies of clean cardboard or plastic containers, as well as any bits and bobs a child might use: buttons, ribbon, beads, bottle caps, etc.

The IB-PYP Attitudes help us focus on the development of posi-tive attitudes towards people, the environment, and learning. These are the day to day attitudes we use:

appreciation, commitment, confidence, coopera-tion, creativity, curiosity, empathy, enthusiasm, independence, integrity, respect, and toler-ance. These attitudes embrace how and what we want students to feel.

October was Bullying Prevention Month

We want every child to feel safe and supported at school.   Classroom lessons in October focused on bullying prevention including recognizing, refusing, and reporting bullying behaviors. These specific lessons build on a core curriculum that focuses on building social/emotional skills including empathy, emotion management, and social problem solving. Embedded in these lessons are topics such as friendship building and how to be assertive. When students feel safe, welcomed, and included, they are able to learn. I also offer small group counseling on a variety of topics. Please be sure to see the insert about these groups being offered second quarter.

As part of our Unity Day celebration each member of our community wrote about what makes them unique, how they will keep our building safe, or what they will do to help prevent bullying. Make sure to check out our "unity chain" in the main hallway! If you would like to learn more about our social skills curriculum, bullying prevention or have any questions about the school counseling program please feel free to contact me at [email protected] If you or your child witness bullying, harassment, or discrimination please contact us or use this link to make a report: https://bexleyschools.formstack.com/forms/incident_report
