    SECTION 02730

    CASING PIPE PART 1 GENERAL

    A. This section contains all provisions for the furnishing and proper installation of casing pipe referenced on the Contract Drawings.

    B. The work shall consist of furnishing and installation of casing pipe and shall include

trenching, excavation, pipe installation and backfill.

    C. The Contractor shall be responsible for locating the exact location of any existing sewer lines, water lines and any other utilities that may conflict with the installation. The Contractor shall endeavor to install the casing pipe without interrupting service or damaging other utilities. Should service be interrupted or damaged during installation, the Contractor shall be responsible for restoring service and repairing any damage as quickly as possible and at no cost to the Owner.

    D. The Contractor shall be responsible for keeping casing pipe free of silts and other debris, in

accordance with Section 02102 Erosion Control of these specifications, throughout the duration of the project until final acceptance. The Contractor at no cost to the Owner shall remove silt or debris deposited in casing pipes.

    E. Dimensions, depths and distance from the centerline of the nearest track shall be for

flammable and no-flammable casing pipe as shown in Figure A below. PART 2 MATERIALS A. Casing pipe and joints shall be of steel and of leak proof construction, capable of

withstanding railway loading. The inside diameter of the casing pipe shall be such as to allow the carrier pipe to be removed subsequently without disturbing the casing pipe. All joints or couplings, supports, insulators or centering devices for the carrier pipe within a casing under railroad tracks shall be taken into account.

    B. When casing is installed without the benefit of a protective coating or said casing is not

cathodically protected, the wall thickness shall be increased to the nearest standard size which is a minimum or 0.063 inch greater than the thickness required for diameters under 12 inches. Refer to AREMA Volume 1, Part 5 Pipelines, Section 5.1.4, Table 5-1.

    C. Steel pipe shall have a specified minimum yield strength, SMYS, of at least 35,000psi. D. For flexible casing pipe, a maximum vertical deflection of a casing pipe of 3% of its

diameter plus inch clearance shall be provided so that no loads from the roadbed, track, traffic or casing pipe itself are transmitted to the carrier pipe. When insulators are used on the carrier pipe, the inside diameter of flexible casing pipe shall be at least 2 inches greater than the outside diameter of the carrier pipe for pipe less than 8 inches in diameter; at least 3

inches greater for pipe 8 inches to 16 inches, inclusive, in diameter and at least 4 inches greater for pipe 18 inches in diameter and over.

PART 3 EXECUTION A. For installation in excavated trenches, the minimum width of the trench shall be the diameter

of the pipe plus 24 inches. Trenches shall be excavated to a depth sufficient to provide a minimum depth of backfill over the top of the pipe as shown on the plans. Casing pipe under mainline tracks and across railway rights-of-way shall be not less than 5 feet from base of railway rail to top of casing at its closest point. Casing pipe under secondary or industry tracks shall not be less than 4 feet from base of railway rail to top of casing at its closest point.

    1) Contractor shall not open more trench in advance of casing installation than is

    necessary to expedite the work.

    2) Excavated materials shall not be placed within 5 feet of the edge of the excavation.

    3) Shoring shall be required for excavations deeper than 5 feet or side slopes shall be cut back a sufficient amount to prevent slides. The Contractor shall furnish shoring plan and calculations to the Engineer for review and approval 2 weeks prior to the expected start of the shoring installation.

    4) The Contractor shall at all times during construction provide proper and satisfactory

means and devices for the removal of all water entering excavations and shall remove water as fast as it may collect in such manner as not to interfere with the prosecution of work.

    5) Contractor shall excavate all material of whatever nature encountered, including

rock, to the elevations and dimensions shown on the plans. Rock encountered during excavation shall be removed to a depth of 12 inches below the grade of elevation of the pipe. The trench should be backfilled with earth, free from stone or hard substances, to the grade elevation.

    6) Excavated materials shall not be placed on the track area. Cover shall be provided to

prevent soil and/or debris contamination of the existing ballast section.

    7) Casing pipe shall be installed.

    8) The Contractor shall backfill the trench after the approval of the Engineer. Initial backfill material of loose, fine soil free from stone and approved by the Engineer shall be placed to a compacted depth of 12 inches above the top of casing. Compaction shall be to a density of not less than 95 percent of the standard Proctor maximum dry unit weight (ASTM D698-91). Care shall be taken not to damage the pipes or the casing. Sand shall be used where soil free from stone is not available.

    9) Remainder of backfill shall be placed in accordance with Subsection B.

    10) Conduit marking tape shall be placed 10 inches below the finished grade and directly

above all casing pipe for the full length of the casing pipe.

    11) Backfill should be in accordance with these specifications Section J 02200 Excavation and Embankment.

    B. The casing pipe installation by the open trench method shall be in accordance with AREMA

Volume 1, Part 5 Pipelines, Section 5.3.5.1 and these specifications Section J 02200 Excavation and Embankment. The length and diameter shall be as shown on the plans.

    C. The casing pipe by jack and bore installation shall be in accordance with AREMA Volume

1, Part 5 Pipelines, Section 5.3.5.1 and these specifications Section J 0270 Part 3.4 Boring and Jacking Smooth Steel Pipe.

PART 4 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT A. Payment for casing pipe installed will be made at the Contract unit bid price per foot for the

type and size of pipe installed. The price shall include all necessary material, labor and equipment

    B. No separate payment shall be made for the following:

    1) Trenching 2) Structure excavation 3) Bedding material 4) Backfill 5) Unloading or storage of Contractor or Company furnished material 6) Pipe joining material 7) Grouting 8) Disposal of unsuitable material 9) Removal of silt or debris from pipes. 10) Shoring
