Case Study Brødrene Hartmann A/S

Price and flexibility were the main parameters when Brødrene Hartmann A/S selected a new supplier to handle their IBM iSeries servers. Fujitsu was the best match for their requirements, and the cooperation continues to develop after three years.

The Customer Brødrene Hartmann is one of the world's leading manufacturers and suppliers of molded-fiber packaging, with production in seven countries and sales or representation in 12 countries. Brødrene Hartmann has its own technology and manufacture machinery for the production of molded-fiber packaging. The group employs approximately 1,500 employees. Country: Denmark Industry: Packaging Founded: 1917 Employees: 1.500 Website: www.hartmann.dk

The Challenge

Brødrene Hartmann was facing a major upgrade of their ERP solution and chose to outsource their server operations to achieve 24/7-operations and thereby also a more secure setup. The operation of the iSeries server solution is continuously becoming more critical because Brødrene Hartmann is increasingly using the ERP system in all areas of their business.

The Solution

Operation of iSeries servers from Fujitsu’s datacenter and technical consultancy. Operation of Domino platform for e-mail and other IBM applications.

"There are others who can deliver the same as Fujitsu, but Fujitsu was spot on in the introductory presentations and focused on many of the areas that we ourselves highly value. In addition, the economy matched our expectations. We don’t always choose the cheapest alternative in bidding rounds, but the alternative that best match our needs," says IT director Bo Bennetsen, Brødrene Hartmann. Brødrene Hartmann chose a model, where they buy capacity rather than outright outsourcing, which typically concerns certain machines. The cooperation is continuously adjusted to fit Brødrene Hartmann’s development and needs. "It all started when we were faced with a major upgrade of our ERP system. Basic criteria for choosing IT provider Benefits of choosing Fujitsu

Flexibility in delivery Economy Competencies for iSeries

Flexibility in delivery Transparent cost structure International assistance

Two factories work directly with the storage module in the new ERP solution, and far from all processes occur during normal working hours. Therefore, Brødrene Hartmann has to consistently be able to trust that the ERP solution is in operation around the clock. "The more parts we integrate into the ERP solution, such as finance, sales, logistics and planning, the more critically it becomes that the system is running smoothly. Fujitsu delivers within the service level that we have defined. To give an idea of how important it is, I can cite a few examples. A breakdown of 4-8 hours will require additional costs for our production. After 24 hours you need to change the production, and after 3-5 days you have to stop the production. Therefore, a crash is very critical after only 4 hours," says IT director Bo Bennetsen, Brødrene Hartmann. For the same reason, together with Fujitsu Bo Bennetsen and his colleagues have secured their solution the best possible way by mirroring the installation, so that a role change can be performed within in a few hours. If a physical damage occurs on a server, the server can be up and running again in two hours. Once a year, Brødrene Hartmann tests the server installation. This results in an improvement log, which helps to develop and optimize the solution. The actual test is carried out in a prior agreed upon service window, where the factories are not dependent on the system. The more service calls – the better "As long as everything is running, I only look at our server installation once a month. We have weekly or daily contact with Fujitsu's service desk regarding general service matters. The more service calls I receive from Fujitsu the better, because then I know that they are proactive – and we have a fine balance in that matter," says Bo Bennetsen and further explains:

"Fujitsu has good skills, and the company is strong in the technical field. I would especially highlight their flexibility, which is essential for us. If all procedures have to be scheduled in detail with a supplier, you have to expect an entirely different cost structure, and we are not interested in that." At Brødrene Hartmann, the IT staffing is located on five different locations.
