CARTOON MOVIE AS MEDIA TO IMPROVE SPEAKING SKILL OF

THE SEVEN GRADE STUDENTS AT SMP NEGERI 1 SUGIO

LAMONGAN EAST JAVA

Abstract

Speaking is one of the basic skills that are taught to students at junior

andsenior high school. Speaking relates to speaking comprehension. It means that

a speakershould think critically about how to understand communication.

Therefore, the teacher must becreative to find out the appropriate learning strategy

to teach speaking. The use of cartoon movie as a media is one of the learning

models that can create a good learning atmosphere because it allows students to

learn to speak in English.This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR)

which is conducted tosolve the students’ problem in English speaking. This

research involved 29 students of grade VII A at SMP Negeri 1 Sugio as the

research subjects.

The ClassroomAction Research (CAR) was done based on Kurt Lewin’s

design with the following procedures: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting.

The study was carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings.

The instruments used in this study were interview guide, questionnaire, field

notes, and test. Then the data wereanalyzedquantitatively and qualitatively.

The result of the study showed that there was an improvement of the

students’ speaking ability. Based on the speaking test, the students’ speaking

score kept improving in every test. In the pre-test, the mean score of the students

was 67.58. In posttest of Cycle1, the mean score of the students was 70.72. In

post-test of Cycle 2, the mean score of the students was 75.10. Based on the field

notes and questionnaire, it was found that the teaching-learning process ran well.

The students were active and interested in speaking. In conclusion, cartoon movie

as a media for teaching could increase the students’ speaking skill.
