Dear parents and members of our Carranballac P-9 College community,

Welcome back for the 2019 College year,

It has been a wonderfully smooth start with all programs getting under way successfully last week. A huge thank you to staff who undertook lengthy preparations to make this possible.

A special welcome to our new, and returning staff and of course those who have changed Campus this year. New and returning Teachers are Jess Horrocks, Stephanie Boyd, Mary Mika, Yianna Hardy, Alex Colston-ing, Fiona Riley, Rose Barnes, Joshua Mahon, Viesha Kosciuk, Melinda Tadic, Stephanie Kerr, Elly Conduit, Beth Curry, Charmaine Moore, Claudia Santos, and Vik Cebergs.

Special Congratulations and Welcome. Thanks to all of our new families, our Foundation parents and students for such an incredibly positive start – well done.

The presentation to student leaders with their ‘leadership badges’ at last Friday’s assembly was significant. We commence the year with capable, confident and caring leaders who will uphold the College values on a day to day basis. We are all looking forward to working with our student leaders throughout the year.

COMPASS continues to provide rich and valuable information to families and it is paramount that all families register on COMPASS. The payment ‘on line’ capability has proven to be very successful and has given time back to both families and the College staff. If you want assistance just speak to Elly Conduit our Media and Communications expert. Make an appointment through the College office, to receive your tutorial.

School Council nominations and the filling of vacancies is just around the corner. We are always looking for parents who are prepared to see the big picture, contribute to the future of the College as well as the present. The school council role offers great insight into how the College runs and offers you the chance to contribute your view on policy as well as the overall direction the College is taking. Keep a lookout for the upcoming notification.

Our College provides extensive curriculum opportunities for students that are designed to enhance their learning in a holistic way. In saying this I am highlighting that we not only cover the academic growth of our students, but also social, emotional and physical growth. The College sport, camps, swimming, outdoor education, health education and student leadership programs are all excellent examples of catering for each child’s needs holistically. We would

expect that all parents see the value in these programs and our expectation is that all students will attend all programs. If the cost of these programs is a concern then please speak to your Assistant Principal to discuss support.

There have been a number of important facility improvements over the holidays and we do hope families appreciate the effort, planning and expense that these items offer our school community.

Jamieson Way

• New portable for Year 6 students

• Retaining walls to La Rochelle Blvd mounds, with more work will continue on this

• High-fence planning has commenced for Jamieson Way.

Boardwalk

• New fence

• Line marking

• Patios to Block B with painting

I am also pleased to announce that we now have use of the Scout facility for both the College and the Scouts.

We welcome the Scouting community into partnership with the College and anticipate that the working relationship will provide excellent opportunities for the College students as well as the Scout movement.

The Parents & Friends are forever active in our community and we will see the fruits of their hard labour in the next few weeks with the installation of $20,000 worth of air conditioners across both Campuses. Why not join the crew, have some fun and also contribute to your children’s great College!

Next week we will be conducting Student Learning Conferences (SLC’s) across the College. All Secondary SLC’s will be undertaken at the Boardwalk Campus in the BER building (please follow the signs). All Primary will take place in your child’s classroom. Specialists will also be available by appointment in their specialist program areas or as notified. Please note that we would like students to attend. These Conferences are designed to create an opportunity for all three parties (staff/student/parent) to share information in order to better inform the teacher of your child’s holistic educational needs. Teachers will then develop Individual Learning Plans (ILP’s) for your child for the first semester. We look forward to seeing all families at the first SLC next week.

Enjoy the next fortnight.

We trust that you have all had a relaxing and restful holiday. We are pleased to report that 2019 has started very smoothly.

We’d like to thank families for being so organised and supporting the transition of your children into the next year level.

Discussing resilience is a great way to support our children; change can be challenging for some students and approaching changes in a positive manner, discussing new opportunities and seeking help if you need it, can allow social and emotional growth for our students .

We would like to make particular mention to our Foundation students who have almost completed two weeks of school. They have settled well and embraced school life and all that it has to offer.

The extensive planning that our staff undertook in 2018, has allowed us to begin classes immediately, so much so that our Year 9’s were able to start electives on the first day of the Year. A mighty effort by all involved.

Over the next week or so you will be given the opportunity to meet your child’s new teachers and start to build this relationship, during the Student Learning Conferences. If you have any concerns or information that you feel may impact on your child’s learning, please let your teacher know. These information sessions are held on Thursday 14 February, with more information and SLC bookings function now available through your Compass dashboard. We value the home-school partnership and believe it is the key to your child’s academic success as well as their wellbeing.

Included in our everyday teaching and learning, our college will be offering plenty of opportunities for extracurricular experiences for students. We will also be aiming to use Compass as our main mode of communication so if you haven’t signed up, now is the time. You can contact the office on 9395 3533 to do this, and if you require a tutorial on how to navigate Compass please speak with one of our Admin staff to arrange a time.

We are very proud of our fabulous college website, it is engaging, very user friendly and is regularly updated. Please keep informed.

Don’t forget to talk to your child about our values. Every situation and experience can always be linked to one of these five.

Pay your Camps, Excursions and Incursions Online

Carranballac P-9 College provides families with the ability to pay for all camps, excursions and incursions via Compass.

Your Compass profile Dashboard will indicate that consent and payment is required for a student event. Consent information will remain in your Compass News Feed until the due date. For more information, access the College Website/Compass/Compass Instructions

and download the Compass Parent Guide booklet.

Log in to your Compass profile by clicking here.

If you do not have your Compass login details, please contact the College Office.

The College Canteen is available for students to purchase snacks and food items during recess and lunch outdoor play times, paying by cash. Items range in price and our Canteen Manager works hard to provide an assortment of food items that are both nutritional and interesting. We strongly discourage students bringing large amounts of money to school, and cannot be responsible for money that is lost or misplaced.

Should you wish to place a Lunch Order for your child, families are encouraged to log in to QuickCliq and order online. This is an easy to use online ordering system, and removes the need for families to supply paper bags for lunch orders.

Canteen items are updated each term and the menu can be viewed on our college website www.carranballac.vic.edu.au and Lunch Orders can be made through www.quickcliq.com.au

Over the last three and a half years, our College has invested over

$750,000 on the improvements of our ICT infrastructure, new computer devices,

ICT peripheral and a terrific new 3D Printer. Our aim is to provide our students with access to the latest available Information and Communication Technology.

The College currently has 19 trolleys, securely housing up to 18 laptop computers, three computer pods (small room with desktop computers), and two computer labs (larger rooms with desktop computers). Unfortunately even with such a large number of computer devices it does not provide students with individual access to a computer during their school day. In an ever increasing technological society, such access is becoming more and more important; particularly in the secondary years of schooling. We are keen to provide students with greater access to computers, unfortunately the school is unable to provide each student with an individual device to use at any time during or after the school day.

Our commitment to ICT will continue to aim toward the future expectations of technology, with a growing emphasis for students to engage in STEAM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics).

To assist families in Year 5 - 9 when deciding what device they should purchase, a list of recommended devices is listed below.

HP 250 G6

15.6” Screen, i3-6006U, 4GB RAM, 500GB. Price: $598.00 incl. GST

1 Year Warranty. HP ProBook 440 G1 x360,

14” FHD LED UWVA Touch Screen, i3-8130U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Pen, WIN10Home. Price:

$1179.00 incl. GST

1 Year Warranty. ThinkPad L380 13.3” FHD

i5-8250U, 16GB RAM DDR4, 512GB SSD, Win10 Pro. Price:1290.00 incl. GST

1 Year Warranty Quotes supplied by Unity Computers, Brooklyn (03) 93156247, 30/11/2018. Families are free to use any computer supplier they choose.

Families are not required to purchase from Unity Computers, however we strongly recommend when making the decision to purchase a device for your student, the device meets the following specifications:

Processor: Intel i3 minimum

RAM: 4GB RAM minimum

Hard Drive: 128 GB (SSD encouraged)

Display Size: 11” minimum

Operating System: Windows (Windows Pro would be preferable but not necessary)

Battery Life: Minimum 6 hrs (we encourage students to leave chargers at home)

Students will be encouraged to bring their laptop devices to school each day to support their learning in the classroom.

When bringing the devices to school for the first time, students are required to visit the ICT technicians and the device will be connected to our Department of Education Wireless Internet service. Students and parents/carers will be required to sign an ICT Acceptable Use Agreement in line with College expectations.

We appreciate your support, and through an ongoing partnership between the College, parents and students we will continue to educate our children in safe, smart and responsible ways to behave and interact online.

Carranballac P-9 College supplies Students in Years 5-9 and all Classroom Teachers with free access to the Microsoft Office 365 Suite including OneDrive (online cloud storage). You will not need to purchase this software with your computer.

To print a copy of the BYOD Letter for families with students in Year 5 - 9 please click here.

If you would like additional information on how to help your children stay safe online please visit the eSafety Commissioners Office website, iParent portal for resources and assistance.
