A REFLECTION FROM ACTING COLLEGE DIRECTOR, ROS MYORS, ON THE EVENTS OF THE LAST FORTNIGHT AT CARRANBALLAC P-9 COLLEGE.

Dear parents and members of our Carranballac community,

As I assume the role of College director during Brendan O’Brien’s absence, I welcome Michael Villani to the role of Acting Campus Principal at Boardwalk, and Carolyn Huell to the role of Acting Assistant Principal.

Families of year 3,5,7 and 9 students will have received information regarding their child’s NAPLAN results this week. These national standardised tests assess students’ reading, writing, language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and their numeracy. NAPLAN is a small snapshot of your child’s learning in May; a lot of learning has occurred since then. Our college has received extensive data of all NAPLAN scores I am delighted with our results and the significant improvement we have made in many areas. Although NAPLAN is just one of an extensive range of assessments that inform our future learning and teaching, the improvement is significant and testament to our college heading ‘in the right direction.’ These results are vindication of several important and strategic developments at our college including:

1. The transition to the secondary education model for years 7,8 & 9 with specialist teachers being employed in many subject areas.

2. Targeted professional learning for teachers based on the strategic goals of the college; including changes to the structure of teacher professional learning teams.

3. The appointment of teacher learning specialists and the ongoing work of our teacher coaches.

4. Four+ years of the HERO (Hear Every day Ready On time) program which has resulted in a huge improvement in student attendance data.

These improvements don’t occur by chance. The details of our short and long term college goals are outlined in the Annual Implementation Plan and Strategic Plan (2017-2021) which can be viewed on our website under the Council tab. These details include key improvement strategies and detailed targets for continued improvement in student outcomes in all key curriculum learning areas. In addition, we have received the results of our Attitudes to School Surveys and will analyse this data to further facilitate

student voice and agency across the college.

Our Literacy and Numeracy week was another very successful event at the college with high levels of student engagement, excitement and parental support. My thanks to the team of teachers on this committee who arranged such wonderful events again this year.

Excitement is high for our year 6 Wakakirri team who successfully made it through to the State Finals. Our college has been very successful in this national performing arts competition over many years and I congratulate the students and staff in the creation, rehearsal and presentation of this wonderful story. It will be very exciting to attend the State Finals at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda on 12 September to see our students compete. Good luck everyone!

Our Parents and Friends organised another successful Father’s Day stall for both campuses. My thanks to them for their ongoing commitment to our students and families. Parent volunteers make an important contribution to our college. If you are able to volunteer at either campuses, a Working With Children Check is required and can be obtained by applying at www.justice.vic.gov.au. There is no charge for a volunteer WWCC.

Wyndham Council Mayor Cr Mia Shaw visited on Thursday and was entertained by student leaders, speeches by students, Emmanuel (Boardwalk) and Jasmine (Jamieson Way). Our Kapa Haka dance groups presented an inspiring cultural dance and our senior rock band also performed. Mayor Shaw had the pleasure of meeting our college therapy dog Trent.

We have received notification from our State Member for Altona District, Jill Hennessey MP that our college will receive an additional funding allocation of $239,500. This amount has been allocated to specific maintenance programs for facilities, grounds and safety compliance.

Dear Parents,

We have thoroughly enjoyed engaging our community in a number of events over the last few weeks. We had huge engagement at our teddy bears picnic and it was wonderful to see families share in the joy of reading with our Foundation, Year 1 and 2 students.

Our Literacy and Numeracy week was a huge success with our team of staff setting up various events and activities to engage our students in their learning. The book parade was again ably led by our secondary student leaders and watching their connection with the younger students was a joy. This is something we highly encourage throughout the year, with a variety activities and events to build student leadership capacity and confidence.

We’ve had much excitement in the Early Years with a successful trip to Werribee Zoo for our Year 4s, and our Foundation students ventured off to the Collingwood Children’s Farm. Our excursions are carefully researched and are directly connected to the learning in the classroom. They are important learning experiences for our students and watching the excitement of the Foundies getting on the bus demonstrates how valuable these experiences are.

We also have to thank the parents involved in our weekly after-school rugby training. This attracts over forty students on a weekly basis and is a sight to behold.

Our VET students are currently out and about performing at schools around the area. Playing to unknown audiences is a valuable part of preparation as these students prepare for their final performance exams in term 4.

Look out for our industry night to be held at Kindred

Studios in Yarraville. The College has worked in partnership with Kindred for a number of years and this night gives our students an authentic performance experience. It’s always a great night of music as these talented youngsters show off their musical skills. As we head into spring, we also look forward to our Early Years music concerts which will be held over weeks 9 and 10. We have rescheduled these concerts so that we can have maximum participation from our students and families.

Our sporting teams continue to participate in Hobson Bay and Point Cook District competitions. The students are enjoying the opportunity to train together as one College and spend more time working as a united team.

Once again, our talented Wakakirri students have successfully made it through to the finals. As you will be aware, our College has a commendable reputation for success in this national performing arts competition. This is another wonderful result for our students and staff and we look forward to the State Finals on 12 September at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda.

With NAPLAN results now out, it is important to keep these results in perspective. Remember, they were conducted earlier in the year and are just a snapshot of your child’s ability at that time. There will have been a lot of learning taking place between then and now. Talk to your child about their learning. Research clearly shows the value of family involvement and interest in children’s learning and the importance of working with staff at school if you have any concerns. Seeking support where necessary can only enhance your child’s learning.

As we head into the last few weeks of term 3, we wish you all a successful fortnight.
