A CLEAN CARPET IMPROVES INDOOR AIR QUALITY A fresh looking carpet is pleasing to the eye, but it is also important to remember that a clean carpet is imperative to the maintenance of good indoor air quality in any building. Carpet has some distinct advantages when compared to other types of indoor flooring. It is a thermal insulator and provides comfort for people’s feet, especially those who are standing all day. It also insulates against noise. However, some health problems have been blamed on carpeting. SO... WHY IS THIS? Well, it is due to the way we live now. More contaminates are present in indoor environments than ever before and, because they are unable to escape, they have to end up somewhere and that place is usually the carpet. A carpet is actually a very good retainer of pollutants, but only if it is maintained properly. It is important to bear in mind that, unless cleaned regularly (the recommended frequency is at least once every two years), pollutants retained within a carpet will eventually be transferred back into the air. A dirty carpet subjected to moisture is a breeding ground for bacteria, fungi

and dust mites to proliferate. Unless a satisfac-tory cleaning programme is initiated this can, and does, often lead to people becoming unwell, especially those with allergies and breathing difficulties. In the home we used to have carpet squares, not fitted carpets. These were taken outside regularly to remove the dirt and dust by beating. The floors underneath received a thorough cleaning. Many carpets these days do not even receive a good vacuuming, due to the inefficiency of the equipment used. Dust particles of one micron or under, in most circumstances, will pass through the vacuum cleaner and back into the air. These particles will collect pollutants, such as heavy metals, pesticides, tobacco smoke and cooking off-gases. The dust is then breathed into the lungs where it penetrates deep within, causing harm, such as triggering asthma. A carpet which is cleaned regularly will improve the health of the building’s occupants. This is because pollutants are extracted from the carpet during the cleaning process. Carpets today come in an endless array of colours, styles and types to complement the décor in any room and help transform a house into a beautiful family home. Carpeting also has certain advantages over some other types of flooring. For instance… 1) It is actually a very good retainer (providing it is maintained properly) of dust, soiling and allergens, reducing pollutants in the air inside your home significantly. 2) It is a sound insulator. Good news for you and your neighbours. 3) It has excellent thermal insulating properties, efficiently retaining heat within its pile and back-ing material. 4) It has orthopaedic benefits. HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR CARPET: Carpeting constitutes a big financial investment

for homeowners, so it is in your best interest to make sure that regular cleaning and mainte-nance routines are in place. This will not only help to preserve your carpet’s appearance, but will also prolong its life expectancy. So… what do you need to do? 1) VACUUMING - Regular vacuuming (every day if possible) is essential in maintaining your carpet. Whether it's a cylinder or an upright version, your vacuum should be light and manoeuvrable so that it is easy to transport between rooms and different floor levels. Many vacuum cleaners now also feature HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Arrester) filters, which ensure that pathogens and irritants in dust picked up by the machines are not redistributed in the exhaust air - particularly helpful for asthmatics or those with dust allergies. Timing is everything with vacuuming. Taking your time, especially when it is a plush carpet, will help to deal with soiling more effectively. Go over each section of carpet several times and work slowly to allow the suction to remove all the ground in dirt and dust. Areas where people sit and move their feet (eating areas for example) will need extra

attention. Vacuuming using slow criss-cross patterns of overlapping strokes will produce the best results. 2) PROFESSIONAL DEEP CLEANING - Of course, while regular vacuuming will keep your carpet looking good to a certain extent, on its own it is not enough to maintain it properly. Professional deep cleaning is also recommended (at least once every two years) to restore the appearance of your carpet, extend its life expectancy, and improve the indoor air quality within your home. Bear in mind, however, that not all carpet cleaning companies are the same. In order to ensure that your carpets are cleaned properly and safely it is always best to choose a cleaner who is trained and/or a member of a recognised organisation. ‘WHY?’….. ‘HOW?’….. ‘WHERE?’….. WHY REGULAR CLEANING IS NECESSARY: Just as the clothes you wear need regular cleaning to keep them fresh and hygienic, carpets and upholstered furniture need to be maintained in the same way. Accumulated soil and grit are major causes of wear and tear, which results in reduced carpet and fabric life. Regular cleaning ensures the removal of this soiling, along with any potentially harmful mites and bacteria, in a safe and practical way. Cleaning charges are minimal when you con-sider the replacement cost of carpets and furnishings, so regular cleaning makes economic sense too. HOW IT’S DONE: There are several methods used in professional cleaning, but the aim of all is the same - to remove as much, if not all, of the accumulated dust, grit and general soiling as possible. Regular vacuuming is a fundamental part of housekeeping, but more specialised equipment and knowledge are required in order to clean carpets and fabrics properly. There are a variety of cleaning methods, the choice depending on many factors - mainly the type of fibre, its construction, age, condition, location, degree of

soiling and the time available to carry out the work. The most recognised cleaning processes are hot water extraction (often referred to as steam cleaning) and various low moisture methods. NCCA members have the experience and expertise to recommend the most appropriate method to achieve the best possible results, whatever the circumstances. WHERE IT’S DONE: Carpets and upholstery are usually cleaned on-site. Although some companies have off-site facilities for your cleaning requirements, especially rugs. Your cleaner will advise you on the most appropriate method for your particular situation. ON-SITE CARPET CLEANING: Before work starts, your cleaner will ensure that the carpets are correctly fitted and that any possible problems, such as weak or damaged seams, are pointed out to you. The area concerned should be as clear as is practical, and left clear until the carpet is dry. Drying times vary with the type of carpet, the method used and the weather, but your cleaner will be able to give you an accurate assessment at the time. UPHOLSTERY:

All upholstery is carefully inspected prior to cleaning. Your cleaner will then decide on the most suitable method according to the type of material and degree of soiling. Advice on how to assist in preparing the area for the furniture cleaning will be provided, if required, and every care will be taken to protect the floor covering and surrounding furniture during the work. OFF-SITE CLEANING: For the best results, some items may require to be taken away and processed at an off-site facility. Here, more thorough cleaning and rapid drying will take place. Fitted carpets which are being transferred to another area, valuable oriental carpets and rugs, flooded or smoke damaged items and heavily soiled carpets, in particular, may benefit from this service. Carpet Cleaning We can deep clean the carpets in you home or work place using several different methods. We will choose the best cleaning method and the best cleaning solution, that will achieve the best cleaning results for your carpets without damaging them. We will move any furniture you want us to. We ask you to remove valuable items from the room. We do not move TV’s on cabinets and if you wish us to move sideboards and cabinets we ask you to empty them first. Upholstery Cleaning We clean all of your upholstery, this means we take the cushions of and deep clean them also. We vacuum, prespray and extract every inch of fabric. Again we ask that valuable items are removed from the room, As taking the cushions of a sofa takes up a lot of room. Protection Once the cleaning of your carpets and upholstery is finish, we can then apply the fabric protector. Our protected is highly recommended
