A car and a truck collided on the N12road near Kloof Mine’s no. 8 shaft onSaturday 21 March.

The accident claimed the lives of thetow people in the car, amother and sonfrom Fochville. The deceased wereidentified as Linda Horn and 17-year-old Juan Horn. The mother and sonwere very close and were often seen to-gether. They were on their way backfrom Johannesburg after visiting Ju-an’s sister, Kristel, when the accidentoccurred.

Hoërskool, left school at the end ofGr.11 to continue his education at atechnical college.He was a sports enthusiast and took

part in the SA Kickboxing Champions-hips in primary school. He was selec-ted for the SA president’s team in 2009and won a bronze medal when he re-presented Central Gauteng WrestlingAssociation at the SA Youth WrestlingChampionships in Pietersburg in2012.He was known as a friendly and out-

going person.Linda previously worked at the Tax

Warehouse in Carletonville and had

been working as a financial assistantfor Buddymed and Buddy Sport inFochville for the past six years. She willbe remembered as very pleasant andefficient single mom.

They will be sorely missed by theirfamily and friends. Their funeral willbe held in the NGK Losberg-Gemeentein Church Street at 11:00 on Saturday28 March.

The two men who brutally assaulted apastor from Deel-kraal last year, wasboth heavily sen-tenced recently.Justice was ser-

ved when MorrisSitoe and JacobSithole were eachsentenced to 16 ye-ars imprisonmentin Carletonville’sregional court on 6March.They had been

charged with hou-sebreaking androbbery with aggra-vating circumstan-ces.

On 16October 2014 the pair enteredthe home of Pastor Claire Yawothe in

Deelkraal, as reported in the Herald of16 January 2015.They brutally assaulted her, resul-

ting in permanent damage to her oneeye, and injuries toher head, body andlegs.

The third sus-pect, who had beenidentified as Heini-fenis Maduna, wasnot linked to the ca-se and has been de-ported.

An event dedicated to Women in Mera-fong took place at Green Church, Wede-la, in celebration of Human Rights Dayon 21 March.

The theme of the day was “womeninpartnership”,which is an initiativede-signed to unite women from differentsectors in a common goal to change theMerafong area for the better.

The event was hosted by thewell-res-pected leader of The “Women in the Bi-

ble Ministries Organisation” Lady Bis-hopMathenjwa. This is an interdenomi-national structure that deals with thedignity of women, the influence of wo-men and women as change agents ineducation,businessandempowerment.

Theeventwasattendedmostlybywo-men from local churches around Mera-fong such as Khutsong, Fochville, Carle-tonville and Randfontein. The majoraim of the initiative was to motivate wo-men to work together for a prosperousfuture, empowering them and allowing

them to forget about their differences.“The first two letters of ‘women’

should be seen as an acronym for ‘well-organised’. Womenneed to see themsel-ves as valuable vessels of honour withgreat potential for even greaterpossibili-ties,” Mathenjwa said.

Thoko Mbuli, Pastor Claire Yawotheand Pastor Nomvula Masina were guestspeakers, and the Merafong mayor alsoshared words of motivation with the au-dience. Singers and poets also providedentertainment.

norance is a factor that destroys manylives. There are many people who areeducated and qualified but are stillunemployed because they are not in-formed. This age is rapidly changingevery minute and one needs to adaptto the fast-pace rate that the world ismoving in.

Technology has taken over our livesand has changed how we do thingssuch as exchanging of information aswe no longer need to meet in person tocommunicate; but social siteshavecre-ated the platform which if used positi-vely can be beneficial in the transfer-ring of information. The fact that tech-nology has replaced some of ournatural aspects has been good tomakelife easier and at the same time has itsown disadvantages, as we no longerneedphysical contact to reachone ano-ther but through a click of finger youcan be able to reach someone who is

in another continent. The informationage is also a world of economy and thebetter you are informed the more op-portunities you can take advantage oftowardswealth.Through readingdiffe-rent subjects from newspapers, booksas well as magazines, watching infor-mative programmes on television, lis-teningattentively to radioandusing theinternet effectively one can always beup to date with the happenings of theworld. This age forces you to be wellaware of your surroundings becauseeverything that takes place in theworldeven if it’s not near to where you are isgoing to affects you some way or ano-ther.

Young men and young women haveto be flexible to make use of the infor-mation they receive because it does notbenefit anyone to be informed withoutbeing proactive. We must make use ofwhat we have to better ourselves and

our com-munities.There aremany plat-forms thatyoung peo-ple can useto access in-formation;and in order to secure a better future,the youth have to walk away from lazi-ness. If the youth can stop waiting forthings to fall on their plates! Theymusttake the initiative to network throughattending conferences, events andmarket themselves because these areavenues where one can meet the rele-vant people who can take you to whereyou want. The more you expose your-self to information, the more you cangrow as a person and come across op-portunities that can take you somew-here in life.

Protests that erupted in the area earlierthis week have led to havoc in severalplaces.

A large group of unhappy residentstook to the streets of the Khutsong Ex-tension 3 area on the morning of 18March. In addition to complaints thatresidents of the area are not being em-ployed in certain government con-tracts, unhappiness about various ser-vice delivery issues also boiled over.Since the beginning of the year Ex-

tension 3, in particular, has been the si-te of several huge sewage leaks.

Besides blocking off roads with sto-nes andburning tyres, someprotestersalso stoned vehicles that dared to drivethrough the area.

According to the commander of theKhutsong Detective Services, ColonelOckie Brits, several vehicles, includingVaal Maseru busses had been stoned.A vehicle belonging to the Living Goldrose farmwas not only stoned, but alsoset alight after the driver managed toflee from the angry crowd. As far ascould be determined, the driver wasbeing accompanied by police when hewent home quickly to fetch something.The protesters attacked his vehiclewhile he was driving on the main roadleading toExtension3. ByTuesday, thewreckage of the burnt-out vehicle wasstill standing on the road on the way toExtension 3. Further protest actioncontinued in this area during the week.

On Tuesday morning protesters al-so used stones and burning tyres toblock off the road between OberholzerandWelverdiend.Theydemandedelec-tricity in areas that have not yet been

electrified, and also complained that acontractor, employed to lay infrastruc-ture for low cost housing, was allegedlyemploying outsiders to do the job.

Municipal traffic officers cordonedoff this road to divert motorists fromthe protesters during the time of theprotest.

On Tuesday, Col. Brits said ten ca-ses of malicious damage to propertyhad been opened following the stoningof vehicles during the protest in Exten-sion 3.People who may have additional in-

The newspaper asked the MerafongCity Local Municipality for commenton the issue of themarches, but no res-ponse had been received by the time ofgoing to print.

ture, said the following:“Over a thousand RDP units in the

area are still without power – despiteowners taking occupation more thanthree years ago. This is another examp-

le of how residents in Merafong havebeen forgotten by the ANC-led munici-pality. In the third quarter of this finan-cial year, only 21% of Merafong’s R294million capital budget had been spent,and it is likely that residents will conti-nue to suffer at the hands of an unca-ring government,”

Last Friday Carletonville’s streets we-re abuzz with excitement as represen-tatives of various structures took partin a colourful parade as part of themayor’s annual State of the City Ad-dress.

This year the parade took an evenlonger route between the municipal of-fices and the Civic Centre.

Other touches, such as a praise sin-ger for the executive mayor, Ms Ma-phefo Mogale-Letsie, were also moreextravagant than previous years.

With the increased shine to the func-tion, most residents are probably hol-ding their breaths to see how many ofthe plans set out in the mayor’s speechwill materialise.

Food gardens, new shopping centresand many new jobs.

These were some of the issues high-lighted during the executive mayor, MsMaphefo Mogale-Letsie’s annual Stateof the City Address.

The mayor once again delivered heraddress in the Carletonville Civic Cen-tre last Friday. In what has become al-most as much part of the ceremony asthe speech itself, the vehicles transpor-ting the mayor and other councillorsfrom the municipal buildings in GoldStreet to the Civic Centre were part ofa colourful parade through the town’sstreets.

Members of the fire and rescue ser-vices department, traffic department,the Working on Fire organisation andmilitary veterans joined in the parade.

During her speech, the mayor high-lighted several issues. In line with thenational plan to end the racial basis ofland ownership, the municipality hel-ped to develop food gardens and far-ming actions in the area. In a projectrun in partnership with AngloGold As-hanti in the Wedela area, several hecta-res of land have been cultivated withsugar beans and spinach.

With regard to job creation, themayor announced that the municipali-ty has provided 448 work opportuni-ties on construction projects duringthe past year. “These translate into anequivalent of 110 people having beenemployed full-time for a year,” shesaid.

133 informal settlements are beingassessed or prepared for upgradingthrough the National Upgrade SupportProgramme.

Thirty-two are being upgraded and87 housing projects are being imple-mented across mining towns that havebeen prioritised.

The first phase of building 5 500 topstructures and associated infrastruc-ture in the Khutsong South Extensionshousing project is nearing completionand more houses are to be built in Ko-kosi Extension 6 and 7 and KhutsongSouth Extension 1, 2 and 3.

“A total of 2 327 top structures inKhutsong South Extension 1, 2 and 3housing projects were completed inthe last 18months, bringingthe total numberof completedstructures in theproject to 5 165,”she told attendeesat the event.

The project hasled to the creationof what the mayortermed as “equi-valent to 342 full-time jobs”.

Other housingprojects plannedinclude a commu-nity rental pro-ject, which will bedone in collabora-tion with Harmo-ny Mine, and amixed private hu-man settlementdevelopment pro-ject at Varkens-laagte next to Wel-verdiend.

The mayor al-so announced va-rious other hu-man settlementand grant-fundedprojects that arecurrently in vari-ous phases ofconstruction, aswell as projectsplanned by themunicipality,which include aCarletonville was-te management

depot, a multi-purpose communitycentre for Khutsong, a Merafong streetlight project and the construction ofnew roads in Wedela.

Another new development that ca-me to light is the construction of a Ko-kosi shopping centre, which will com-mence in June or July this year.

She said a major upgrade of Presi-dent Hyper in Fochville has commen-ced, resulting in it more than doublingits size. Business plans for a Carleton-

ville multi-nodal transport hub, aKhutsong South Extensions taxi rank,a Kokosi precinct upgrade, the esta-blishment of a Kokosi social develop-ment cluster and a Fochville-Kokosiregional park have also been submit-ted to the Gauteng Funding Agency.

Among others, the municipality hasinvested R1.01 billion in municipal in-frastructure and human settlements,

which was implemented through la-bour- intensive methods as far as pos-sible.

This created the equivalent of 341full-time jobs in the past 18 months.It has also invested in human resourcedevelopment and empowerment, thefurther training of its employees andhealth, social support and the trainingof young people in the area.

The executive mayor, Ms Maphefo MogaleLetsie, being met by traffic officers and fireand rescue services personnel upon her arrival at the civic centre.

The mayor and other councillors weretransported to the civic centre in severalluxury vehicles, which formed part of theparade.

Community members stood all along theroute from themunicipal offices to the civiccentre in awe of the parade.

A community activist fromKhutsong isasking that the South African HumanRights Commission (SAHRC) interve-nes to sort out some of the service deli-very issues in the area.

According to Mr Mzwandile Maila,he lodged a complaint with the SAHRCon 6 March, with reference to sewagespills that have occurred inmany areasover the past months.

“The right of Khutsong South Ext.4, Khutsong Ext. 3 and Kokosi resi-dents to a clean, healthy environmenthas been violated by the MMC of water,sanitation, electricity and gas, Cllr Jo-mo Mogale, and the Merafong Council.They have violated chapter 2: Bill ofRights, section 24 (a) which states“Everyone has the right to an environ-ment that is not harmful to their healthand wellbeing,” he wrote.

According to Maila’s letter to the

SAHRC, the sewage spill started in2012 and were reported to both theMMC and the council, but there was noresponse.

“These spills have caused diarrhoeaand asthma, and children developedrashes after the spills started,” he com-plained.

In the report, he also referred to thedeath of four-year-old Kabelo Mokheleof Kokosi, who died after falling into anopen sewerage pit in February.

On 13 March, the SAHRC’s provin-cial manager of its Gauteng office, MsCKisoon, confirmed that she has recei-ved Maila’s complaints.

She said that the complaints wouldbe assessed to determine whether theyfall within the mandate of the SAHRCorwhether they should be dealt with byanother organisation, institution orstatutory body.

On Monday, Maila told the Heraldthat he had received no further feed-back on the issue.

The new mall that is currently beingbuilt next to “Khutsong Extension 5” isset to draw many big businesses to thearea.

According to the Bentel Group, thecompany which is building the newmall in association with Pretoria-basedFontis Developments, the developmentwill serve both Carletonville and Khuts-ong and is set to open in September thisyear.

The complex, which is being built ata cost of R330 million, is set to coverapproximately 25,500 square metres.

The East Rand-based Bentel Groupis one of Gauteng’s leading privately-owned property investment and deve-lopment companies. It is led by theBentel brothers, Selwyn and Aubrey,who have a number of well-known de-velopments to their name such as EastRand Retail Park in Boksburg, RetailCrossing on the West Rand, and theDis-Chem head office and distributioncentre in Midrand.

“Carletonville Mall is one of our la-test developments and a hugely exci-ting project for the group,” says Sel-wyn, director of the Bentel Group.

“The mall is going to bring a wholenew level of shopping, under one roof,to the communities of Carletonville,Khutsong and surrounding towns.Confirmed anchors include Pick n Pay,Choppies Supermarket, Woolworths,Planet Fitness, and Cashbuild. Othernational tenants include Truworths,Clicks, Identity, Exact, Mr Price, Sport-scene, PEP, Tiger Wheel and Tyre andLewis Furnishers,” he adds.

The developers indicated this weekthat Carletonville Mall is already ap-proximately 75% let. When it is comple-

te and fully let, the mall is expected tohave more than 85 stores, restaurantsand service outlets. It will also haveample parking and a taxi drop off area.

“Carletonville is famed for being oneof the richest gold-producing areas inthe world and is home to Western Deep,one of the world’s deepest mines. Ho-wever, as a mining town, it does not ha-ve the kind of quality shopping experi-ence under a single roof that our new

mall is going to bring to the town,” saysSelwyn. “The Carletonville CBD servesa market, but Carletonville Mall will bea shopping destination and will notcompete directly with the CBD. In fact,we believe they will complement eachother and the new mall will raise thequality and variety of retail in thetown,” he adds.

According to the developers, Carle-tonville Mall represents a major invest-

ment in the town outside its mainstaymining sector. In addition to the invest-ment, it will create much-needed jobsbeyond the construction phase, whenit opens.

They also indicated that a new town-ship, Carletonville Extension 17, adja-cent to the new mall development, isbeing developed privately, increasingthe mall’s primary shopper reach withover 2 200 housing units.

Nontobeko Selani (31), also known as“Kgadi”, is a singing sensation from theKhutsong township.

Kgadi’s music is soulful and afro-cen-tric, which is a sound or genre popularlyknown as “Afro-soul”. She was inspiredby famous local artists such as Thandis-wa Mazwai, Simphiwe Dana, BusiMhlongo as well as Berita, including in-ternational artists, Lauren Hill, ASA andTracy Chapman.

Her journey as a musician began in2001 when she was a lead singer for achurch choir. Later, in 2004, she experi-mented with music groups such as“B.K.M”, a hip hop group. It was only twoyears later when she met Johannes Bale-ni who introduced the singer to a Jazzgroup; she stayed with the group for twoyears in which time she developed her ta-lent and gained a great deal of experien-ce.

Currently, Kgadi performs with “Khay-aband”, an afro-soul band. As she explai-ned to the Herald, this style of music isone with which she feels more comforta-ble because it “heals her spiritually”.

She described the sound as being re-laxing of the mind and calming of thesoul.

She is also an artist who is very proudof her African culture, and she repre-sents her heritage through her music,which she explains helps connect her toher roots. During her career she hasbeen motivated by Bra Steve and Zakeshave supported her and have continuedto motivate her; in fact, they have evenspoken to Kgadi’s parents, telling themhow talented their daughter is.

The future does seem bright for Kgadi,who looks forward to establishing her-self in the South African music industry.

“I did my research about the music in-dustry as a whole and I worked hard toimprove myself by getting to know my-self, and sometimes I felt like quitting byI didn’t,” said Kgadi.

She has performed at some local pu-blic avenues and she has worked withproducers such as Dj Spin, Coolaffarsand Polytonal. She has also added a gui-tar to her music because, as she ex-plains, the instrument adds a particular“live element” to the sound.

“I bought my first guitar in 2010 andsince then it has been part of me,” thesinger told the newspaper.

A bakkie was stolen in WilheminaStreet in Carletonville at around 06:40on Wednesday, 11 March.

The owner of the vehicle, 61-year-oldAndries Swanepoel, was in the kitchenat the time.

He did not hear anything above theusual sound of passing vehicles at thattime of the morning. But, gazing out ofthe window, he noticed that his bakkiewas moving. He ran after the white FordCourier, but itwas too late.There was noreply when hetried to call theCarletonville Po-lice, but hisneighbour calledthe Johannes-burg Policearound 06:50and they respon-ded.

The victimand his wifecomplain thatthey have noti-fied the policeabout peoplewho hangaround outsidetheir yard before.

A gate motor that controls the ope-ning and closing of the gate had beenstolen at first and the gate was able toopen by hand without the use of a remo-te.

They suspect it is the same criminalswho stole the bakkie, that broke the ga-te.

The complainant stated that he went

to the police to open a case, but the poli-ce did not come to his house whatsoe-ver.

Swanepoel was also alerted that thebakkie might be around Carletonville,Blybank or Blyvoor—but the policealle-gedly told them that they cannot doanything about it and they were recentlyalerted that the bakkie was parked intown outside a Cash Crusaders shop.However, the police did not respondagain when they reported about the ve-hicle.

Swanepoeltold the Heraldthat he is verydisappointedwith the servicethat he receivedfrom the police.

“If they couldhave reacted im-mediately, the ve-hicle would havebeen found. I re-ceived bad servi-ce from the Car-letonville Police,”said Mr Swane-poel.

According toSwanepoel, heknows of manyother people

who have also complained about badservice and a lack of visibility, whichmay lead to an increase in criminal acti-vities.

The Herald contacted the policeabout the matter.

They responded that they are lookinginto it, that that no formal complaintshave so far been raised with the seniorpolice management.

A mother recently had a harrowing ex-perience after allegedly not receivingthe medical assistance that she needed.

On6 Marchayoungandpregnantwo-man from Khutsong township, Khany-isile Magagula (20), felt pains in her sto-mach around 14:00.

She then went to the Khutsong MainClinic with her sister, Nomonde Moss,to find out what was happening, butthey were told that they should go to thehospital because there were renovati-ons taking place at the clinic. She re-quested an ambulance, but was toldthat the ambulance would take time tocome and that they should find a wayto hurry to the hospital.

The pregnant woman managed to getto the hospital through private trans-port and while Moss was explaining to

the nurses that Magagula was about tobe in labour, the baby was born as shewas sitting on a wheelchair at the recep-tion.

The baby fell down on the ground andthen the nurses only reacted after sometime to assist the patient. Apparentlyone of the nurses also refused to helpthe baby without wearing gloves, sayingthat it is too risky.

Magagula was deeply worried abouther baby as there might have been inter-nal injuries that might affect the infant,but after being checked by two doctorsand confirmation of an X-ray, the baby,which was named Simphiwe, was pro-nounced to be healthy. According to thefamily, they did complain to the hospi-tal’s nurwing manager before motherand baby were discharged on 15 March.

According to Magagula, she wasmostly disappointed by the KhutsongMain Clinic for not making patientsaware of the inconvenience because shebeen for a check-up the day before theincident took place. She was not toldthat she could not receive help at the cli-nic due to the renovations and that shehad to go to the hospital for the emer-gency. She feels that she could have losther baby because of the clinic if she didnot have her own transport to take herto the hospital.

Magagula went back to the clinicthree days later for treatment, and wasapparently told that the manager wouldcome to her house in Extension 1Khutsong, but the manager did not vi-sit.

A manager at the clinic, Nelly Mlam-bo, responded to the Herald by sayingthat the renovations took place from 24February and the community, includingMagagula, had been informed, accor-ding to the patients records during herlast visit of antenatal care on the 24 Fe-bruary. Magagula had apparently beeninformed to go to hospital for deliveryany time she experienced labour pains.Mrs Mlambo also stated that it was im-possible for the clinic to reserve a roomin cases of an emergency; also, the dustand fresh paint would not be a healthy

environment and could expose babiesto infections.

She further stated that there was noformal complaint laid by the patient.With regard to the unavailability of anambulance, she stated that the patienthad not been refused access of the am-bulance, but the people who hadbrought the patient were alerted thatthere was no ambulance stationed atthe facility at that time of emergencyand that the am-bulance service isa different depart-ment which doesnot fall under theMain Clinic.

A spokespersonat West Rand Dis-trict Health, San-dile Gwayi, statedthat the districtstrives to rendergood quality servi-ces to the WestRand communi-ties and they en-courage people toreport bad servi-ces according tothe Patients Com-plaints Charterdisplayed on thefacility wall.

Furthermore,they are encoura-ged to complain tothe health workerwho is attendingto them and if theydo not receive anyassistance there,then they must re-port it to the ma-nager of the clinic.People can alsocomplain to theQuality AssuranceDirectorate if thepatient feels thatthe complaint hasnot been adequa-tely dealt with, or

is not satisfied with the outcome. Pa-tients can also voice their complaintsthrough the Gauteng Premier’s hotlinenumber 0860 428 8364, which is 24hours.

The West Rand District managementacknowledged the inconvenience cau-sed by this unfortunate situation; howe-ver, the clinic would like to inform thecommunity that the clinic is now fullyoperational.

klubkampioen uit die stryd getree nahy die afgelope seisoen talle ouer hen-gelaars op hul neuse laat kyk het. Hywas onder meer die eerste junior hen-gelaar nógwat vir die senior “game fish”kampioenskap,wat inNovember verle-de jaar in Sodwana plaasgevind het, ge-kies is en het ook in dieselfde maand‘n marlyn van sowat 80 kg met ‘n lynmet ‘n breekkrag van net 6 kg uit diewater getrek.Jannas het ook die titels van junior
