A highly-controversial Khutsong ca-se, related to gang violence versusmob-justice in November last year,recently grew more interesting whenfurther arrests were made.

The Herald managed to obtain thenames and surnames of those arre-sted, after trying to get names fromthe SAPS’ provincial office for overfour months.

Firstly the Gauteng SAPS’ com-munications officers, Brigadier Ne-ville Malila and Colonel Lungelo Dla-mini, forbade local communicationsofficers to talk to the media for fearthat disclosed information wouldalert other suspects who were still tobe arrested.

After a second, and now even athird batch of arrests, they still failedto provide the Herald with names.On Tuesday, August 12, seven of thesuspects arrested appeared incourt. When asked for the names,however, Dlamini responded saying,“The case handled in court today,therefore an investigating officer isnot in a position to remember all na-mes of the suspects,” despite the factthat this same investigating officerheads the team who arrested thesemen at their homes.

In the same way, all other detailswith regards to this case are alleged-ly extremely confidential. Unlike de-tails of other murder cases, nobodycould tell the Herald on what basis17 people were arrested for some-thing as serious as murder and todate, no evidence besides a “witness

statement” has been presented in court.They could also not produce reasonswhy so many months lapsed betweenthe arrests, which have been happeningin drips and drabs over the last almostnine months.

To make matters worse, Colonel Mo-kwena/Mokoena (the Investigating Offi-cer) got the number of murdered gang-sters and their ages wrong during thefirst court appearances of five men whowere kept in custody for 56 days wit-hout being granted bail as the state op-posed their bail on several occasions.

The first five arrested suspects (whoall deny having been at the scenes whe-re gangsters were killed and some clai-ming to have solid proof that they werenot even in Khuitsong on that fatefulday) were Jack Mogagabe, MotsekiKhotsana, Happy Lefakane, Christop-her Jongilanga and Andrew Langa.

In the interim, another five suspectswere arrested, namely Amos Padi, Tu-melo (Panka) Segakweng, Steve Siko,Mswangela Khanile and Bennet Mofanawho were let out on bail a day after theirarrests. The Herald spoke to one of the-se men who claimed that the only evi-dence the police could give him whenhe asked why he was being arrested,was that some community member hadpointed him out to police.

“I was, in fact, at hospital for the birthof my child on the day the violence washappening in Khutsong and I can proveit. I do not know how police can arrestpeople for something as serious asmurder on nothing but hearsay,” a frus-trated man told.

Of the next seven people arrestedlast, namely Nthapeleng Beau Mokgot-

si, who is a teacher in Khutsong, Micha-el (Lucky) Mothobi (who allegedlyworks for the Khutsong SAPS), JacobMosedi Namane (Saxon), Jabulani Jo-seph Masoula (Jabu), Daniel Dilima(Kukuru), Bless Kanaomang (Ma-King-dom) and Esau Kingsley Mapelo (Ma-Ess), only three received bail on Tues-day, August 12, whilst the rest remainin custody as the court awaits police do-cuments which are still outstanding.

Of the 17 men arrested, all deny ha-ving been around when the murders of

six alleged gangsters, who terrorisedthe community of Khutsong for anextended period, were beaten andburned to death.

All 17 men are to appear in courtagain on September 4.

“We do not really know what isgoing on,” another one of the mentold the Herald. “We are completelyin the dark because one minute wehear the case is going on trial and thenext we are told that a decision fromthe DPP is awaited.”

A criminal will spend the next 18 yearsof his life in prison.

Two Khutsong detectives, ConstablesJohannes Mapitsi and Dikeledi NorahNomandla were working on two separa-te cases, but soon found out that onesuspect was involved in both.

On August 2 last year, Thabo Mot-laung (28) of Khutsong was out drinkingwith an acquaintance. It was not long be-fore he realised that his acquaintancehad money on him. The two went theirown separate ways after drinking. Ataround 20:00 that evening, the acquain-tance was sitting at his home in Extensi-on 4, Khutsong, beside a fire he had ma-

de, minding his own business. Mot-laung appeared, but not just to socialisethis time. Upon arrival, he started as-saulting the man,and robbed himof the R 800 hehad in his pocketafter which hethrew him in thefire. DetectiveConstable Mapi-tsi started investi-gating a case ofCommon Robbe-ry and AssaultGBH (Assaultwith the intent todo grievous bodi-

ly harm), but unfortunately Motlaunghad fled and was nowhere to be found.

At the same time, Mapitsi’s colleague,Detective Constable Dikele-di Nomandla was investiga-ting a business burglary thathappened in July 2013 inwhich Motlaung was also thesuspect. He had broken intoa tavern and stolen cash. No-mandla was also unsucces-sful in finding her connivingsuspect.

The two detectives perse-vered and continued theirsearch for Motlaung, andwith recent information re-ceived, they managed to find

and arrest him in the early hours of July19 this year at around 04:00.

He was charged with Common Rob-bery, Assault GBH and business burgla-ry. He was denied bail in the KhutsongMagistrates Court. Motlaung thus sta-yed in police custody until he finallywent on trial in the Oberholzer RegionalCourt last week. The Magistrate, Mr JanSteyn, found Motlaung guilty on allcharges. He was sentenced to six yearsin prison for the business burglary. Fur-thermore he was handed a 12 year sen-tence for the robbery and assault of thecomplainant. “This is excellent work bythese two detectives,” said ConstableNtombizonki Dyosini, Spokesperson ofthe Khutsong SAPS.

Is itreally measured bythe standard of li-ving? Everybodyneeds money whichis obvious, but the-re must be morehonour than accu-mulating riches.

If success is onlydetermined by howwealthy you arethen why do we he-ar of stories of richpeople who killthemselves? Thetruth is: money can’t buy love and suc-cess.

I have once asked my late father whatsuccess was and he said to me “Suc-cess is accomplishing whatever it is

that you want to accomplish in life,”and it made a lot of sense to me. LaterI realised that everyone has their owndefinition of success and I had to comeup with my own. I asked more peoplewhat success is to them and they all

said something diffe-rent.

My definition ofsuccess is totally pro-found and it has no-thing to with materialthings.

I think success ismore of process thana destination. I thinkyou never really reacha point of being suc-cessful and it is some-thing that you alwaysstrive for.

It is more about theimpact that you makeand the contributionthat you offer to life -that is what makesyou who you are. Suc-cess doesn’t belong to

Various problems are hampering theproject to build low cost houses for re-sidents of Khutsong from going for-ward.

Last week Thursday, members of thesteering committee for the project tobuild houses in Khutsong South Exten-sion 1, 2 and 3, met at the Carletonvillemunicipal building. During this gathe-ring, it came to light that the project isstill far from completion.

Up to date only 3 809, or 72%, of the5 500 houses that are supposed to becompleted have been finished and ap-proved so far. A total of 4 804 wall pla-tes have been completed while the raftfoundations of 5 174 houses have beenfinished. Some of the various contrac-tors involved in the project seem to beparticularly slow in reaching their go-als.

Up to now, the contractor Fikile Te-mane has only completed 84% of the4 500 stands allocated to it to be built.

According to the committee’s report,penalty fees of more than R700 000 ha-ve been applied for the late work. Alt-hough an implementation plan was in-troduced to deal with the problems, thereport notes that “the mechanism ishowever not effective as the inspectora-tes don’t have sufficient capacity to at-tend to the backlog.”

In the meantime, back-up contrac-tors that were brought in to completeanother 1 000 houses have also onlycompleted 35% of their goal. In March,for instance, only 23 houses were com-pleted.

Various challenges hamper the pro-ject.

One reads, according to the report:“No contracts in place. This creates ex-treme delays as material purchasescannot continue. Urgent interventionrequired. Still no resolution.”

Other problems noted during themeeting are that the pedestrian bridgeand the road over the railway line, bothof which are supposed to make it easierfor residents to move between the newextensions and the older part of Khuts-ong.

“Under construction with very littleprogress, a meeting was held with thecontractor and warning letters weresent,” the report notes about the pedes-trian bridge. It is also noted that the ro-ad over the railway bridge is behindschedule.

Another challenge noted in the re-port is so-called “lost stands.” Accor-ding to the report, the municipality isseeking help to install additional waterand sewer services in areas to wherethese units are to be re-allocated.

Other issues that came to light is thatthe municipality is running into cash-

flow shortages to complete the project,as money paid over by the provincialgovernment do not cover professionalfees and geotechnical variance. Ano-ther issue mentioned in the report, wasthat some contractors have allegedlynot been paying their labourers. Alt-hough requests were made that suchcontractors were to be blacklisted, thematter was apparently resolved.

“The due date for the project to becompleted was already on April 16, yetthe houses are still not finished. If it ta-kes so long to complete Phase 1 of the

project, which just consists of 5 500houses, when will we ever come toPhase 2, during which the other 14 500houses are to be built?” a resident whosits as a community representative onthe steering committee, Mr ThembaWisani, wondered.

According to Wisani, there are alsomany other issues that are not in place,including the fact that many municipaldepartments, such as the Waste De-partment, do not even bother to attenddespite being invited to attend the stee-ring committee meetings.

A group of local businesspeople has in-dicated that it is also not satisfied withthe way in which the building of the pe-destrian bridge over the road betweenOberholzer and Welverdiend is procee-ding.

According to Mr Abe Malefo of the Me-rafong Business Concerned Group(MBCG), an organisation of local busi-nesspeople, theproject tobuild thebrid-ge is proceeding way too slowly.

“This bridge is very important to thecommunity. Currently people who wantto move between the new extensions andthe older part of Khutsong have to paya lot of money for taxi fees. Until thisbridge has been completed, such pro-jects will continue,” Malefo indicated.

“We are also worried because it seemsas if local businesspeople are ignored inthis project. Although we understandthat the project is specialised and forthis reason most of the workers on itmust have certain skills, it also seemsas if there are very few local people em-ployed in it. Surely locals can be employ-ed to do smaller tasks such as steelfixing?” Malefo told the Herald on Mon-day.

According to Malefo, attempts by theMBCG to meet with acting municipalmanager, Mr George Seitsho, to discussthe problems, have ended in vain. Alt-

hough the MBCG has indicated that itmight start to lobby the community tostop the project from continuing, a mee-ting with the municipality on Monday re-sulted in theorganisationplanning to re-sort back to negotiating with authoritieson these issues.

“It is acknowledged that the construc-tion of the Khutsong Pedestrian bridgeis taking longer than planned. Factorsthat contributed to project delays inclu-ded several days lost as a result of thehigh midsummer rainfall experiencedand the community that stopped theproject on numerous occasions,” a mu-nicipal spokesperson indicated on Tu-

esday after the Herald sent questionsabout the matter to the municipality.

“During discussions with the commu-nity, the appointment of subcontractorswas rejected and the community insteaddemanded the appointment of more lo-cal labour. The work however is largelyof a specialist nature for which the skillsare not readily available within the com-munity.These skills of necessitywill the-refore have to be subcontracted fromoutside the community, which leaves thecontractor in a catch 22 situation sincethe community would not allow the ap-pointment of subcontractors. This thenessentially leaves the contractor with no

option other than to make dowith what he’s got, ultimately tothe detriment of good projectprogress.

“The recent strike in the steelindustry further compoundedthe problem to the extent that adelay of ±2 months in the deli-very of materials is envisaged.

“The contractor has alreadybeen placed on terms to speedup construction, but as alludedto above, it remains a challen-ging situation for the fact thatspecialists cannot be broughtin. A remedial plan is in processof development which will beimplemented as soon as it is ap-proved.

“All contracts issued by the municipa-lity aim to identify the items in the sche-dule/bill of quantities that can be doneutilising labour intensive methods. Thisensures that the maximum possiblenumberof labourcanbeengaged locally.It is however important to note that the-re is no relationship between the valueof a contract and the number of labourthat can be engaged, since the natureand complexity of projects all differ. “Allthe municipality’s contracts include theprerequisite that all labour must besourced locally with only key personnelfrom the contractor to be deployed onsite. Sourcing of labour is done throughmunicipal and political structures go-verned by the processes and proceduresoutlined in the municipality’s EPWP po-licy. The assertion made that that localresidents are not employed is thereforedevoid of any truth,” the spokesmanconcluded.

Not only will it give them a solidroof over their head, it will also beproperty that they can own for therest of their life.

Many Khutsong residents still livein fear that the ground on which theyhave been living might be unsafe andthat any property they own might li-terally sometime be collapsing intoa sinkhole, as has happened withmany others.

In this way the promise of a newhouse also means a promise to a sa-fer future for them and their child-ren. It sometimes seem as if someofficials do not take the needs of tho-se needing houses seriously.

Are those needing houses seen ashumans in need of certain assistan-ce that will fulfil certain physicaland emotional fees or rather as irri-tating numbers that must be tickedfrom a list to reach a certain goal putdown on paper?

For some reason the municipalityseemingly cannot get its housing de-livery sorted out.

This week the Herald reports thatthe first phase of building low-costhouses to the Khutsong communityis way behind schedule. It came tolight that only 3 809, or 72%, of the5 500 houses that are supposed tobe completed have been finishedand approved so far. Although me-asures have been takento try to dealwith the problems, few seem to beworking. As this process is startingto lag further behind, more familieswill not receive the benefit of recei-ving a proper roof over their head.

Not only were the houses promi-sed to them, but a large amount oftaxpayers’ money has been alloca-ted to ensure that the process tobuild the houses runs smoothly.

For many families a low-cost hou-se is like a dream come true.

A few nights ago I visited the Gertvan Rensburg Sport Complex tosupport some of the sporting disci-plines practiced at the facility.

The Gert van Rensburg SportComplex is used by a variety of sportdisciplines right through the year.This sport complex hosts severalsporting events that attract partici-pants from all over the country.

I was disgusted at the state of thefacilities.

The following observations:a.External lighting was totally in-

adequate and/or non-existent. Manylights were not working or just plainmissing.

b.Security was supposedly to beprovided by 2 (two) security officers,but they could not be seen and/orfound anywhere.

Access control seems to be a ru-

mour! I doubt if they were ever onduty.

c.The toilets were something outof a horror movie!

Cracked walls, floors flooded, noworking lights, actually no lightsand broken fittings with open elec-trical wires.

The urinals were in pieces andshattered.

d.Inside the sports hall there weremore than 15 (fifteen) lights not wor-king.

It seems that the MCLM believesthat maintenance is a waste of mo-ney.

I wonder what the Minister ofSport will have to say about the stateof the facilities.

Maybe I should forward him somephotos with a detailed explanationof the MCLM’s inability to provideits residents with acceptable sportand recreation facilities.

I really hope the MCLM can makesome timely effort to correct the sta-te of the Gert van Rensburg SportComplex.

Members of the community, envi-ronmental activists and a mine inthe area want to work together tostop the cutting down of trees inthe area.

According Ms Nicci Simpson, aFochville resident who spearhea-ded the action, she has for some ti-me been concerned that the largescale cutting down of certain typesof trees is having a detrimental ef-fect on the environment.

The government has howeverundertaken an action to clear thecountry of certain invasive treespecies such as Gluegum andBlack Wattle to save water.

“Some of the trees may be a pro-blem in other areas but here we arereliant upon them.

They suck up pollution from mi-ning activities in the ground and al-so protect against extreme miningdust fallout,” Simpson indicatedduring a meeting at Libanon lastweek Friday.

She added that after some of thetrees were cut down in the Kalbas-fontein rural area between Fochvil-le and Vereeniging, residents havebeen exposed to much more mi-ning dust and even dust from farmroads that become airborne astrucks drive over it.

“It might make sense to cut downsuch trees in some suburban are-as, but here between the mines weneed them,” Simpson told.

The well-known environmenta-list and CEO of the Federation fora Sustainable Environment (FSE),Ms Mariette Liefferink, also indica-ted that the trees also help with thecombating of soil erosion and thatsome mining companies have inthe past deliberately planted someof the trees in areas around theirslimes dams to combat pollution.

Although mines are often at log-gerheads with activists and thecommunity, Sibanye Gold’s GroupWater Consultant, Mr Johan Wag-ner, indicated during the meetingthat on this issue the mine wouldactually support the cause.

Wagner indicated that he belie-ved that planting the right type oftrees, even if they might not be indi-genous to our country, might be ve-ry beneficial in combating polluti-on.

“Some alien plants and trees arethe most tolerant of hostile envi-ronments.

Some plants, like tamarisk,grow wherever they are planted,even on mine dumps,” says Wag-ner.

He also noted that water and se-wage leaking from municipal infra-structure also added to some of thewater that posed problems to mi-nes in the areas and that for thisreason, municipalities also had tobe made more aware of the effectthat this water has on environmen-tal issues.

As a result of the benefits that so-me trees might have, Sibanye Goldhas even obtained permits fromthe government to allow it to keepalien trees in some areas.

The meeting was concluded witha plan that a committee must beformed to take the matter furtherin future.

A school from Khutsong recently strug-gled with various problems.

The chairman of Tswasongu HighSchool’s governing body, Mr ThembaWisani, complained that there were va-rious issues at the school with whichthe municipality was not assisting.

The school had been complaining forweeks about a water leak at a tank thatis situated on the school yard. The tankis on top of a tower and it ensures thatthe school has an adequate water sup-ply. Except for the fact that the leakingtank has led to some water supply pro-blems to the school, a large amount ofthe water had also leaked onto theground.

At the time that the Herald visited theschool, one could almost not walk nearthe tanks because of the extent to whichthe ground was flooded.

In the meantime the school’s staffand parents were also concerned abouta hole, presumably a sinkhole, situatedin the middle of the schoolyard. As faras could be determined, the hole,which is in a completely separate partof the yard than the leaking tower, haddeveloped several months ago.

Although the school contacted theMerafong City Local Municipality, andsomeone did come to inspect, nothingwas done about the matter.

“No-one ever called us back to ex-plain how the hole started, what wouldbe done about it and whether it holdsany danger to our children,” one of thepeople associated with the school com-plained.

The Herald sent questions about theproblems to the Merafong City LocalMunicipality on July 29. When therewas no response, the newspaper againsent questions about the matters to

them on August 5.“The sinkhole that formed at the

school premises was investigated Geo-technically. The tower was leaking wa-ter and a sinkhole started to developnext to it. The sinkhole caused the wa-ter supply pipeline to break. The pipewas replaced,” a municipal spokesmanresponded after the questions weresent the second time.

As a result of the fact that the holeover which the school complained wasnot situated near the tower, the Heralddid point it out to the municipality thatthere was another sinkhole in theschool yard which they had not yet at-tended to. At the time of the newspapergoing to print it wasn’t sure what wasdone about this matter.

Another sports facility in the Khutsongarea is currently unusable for the pu-blic despite the fact that a lot of moneyhas been spent on it.

The Herald recently reported that theKhutsong Stadium still cannot be useddespite the fact that contractors wor-king for the Merafong City Local Muni-cipality have been upgrading it for ayear. In the meantime the dilapidatedBatswaneng Stadium also cannot beused despite the fact that it is the onlyathletics facility available to mostKhutsong schools.

The Herald also recently visited ano-ther sports facility, the so-called ‘Khuts-ong South Stadium’.

Next to the locked gates of this arealies building rubble, stones and rub-bish. Large pieces of concrete and smallhills show that the area has never beenprepared or cleared. Pieces of sawed-off palissade fencing can be seen on thesides, where, according to residents,the municipality put up a fence withoutdoing anything further at the facility.

As no-one ever guarded or visited it,the fence was later stolen.

Only a small area at the facility hasbeen paved and fenced and a neat buil-ding with dressing rooms has also beenerected. As this building is fenced offand the rest of the facility not develo-ped, it is currently without any use.

According to Mr Hloni Kharejane ofthe Merafong City Local Football Asso-ciation, it is impossible to use the stadi-um. The only other sports facility thatis currently available in the area of thenew extensions is an open piece of landnext to the Khutsong South Library.

“One can even call this ground un-playable as the soccer balls get punctu-red if you kick them towards the libra-ry. The only thing that the municipality

has done at the ‘new stadium’ is to buildworld-class change houses which are ofno use to the players,” Kharejane toldthe newspaper. “We heard that R3.6mil-lion was allocated to establish this sta-dium. Where has all the money gone?One cannot see that it was spent here,”a resident who also heads a communityorganisation, Mr Themba Wisani, toldthe newspaper.

“The Khutsong South Stadium wascompleted and handed over. The pro-ject was done in phases,” a municipalspokesman responded to questionsfrom the newspaper about the facility.

According to him “phase 1” consistedof a pitch, irrigation system, fencingand a cottage for the caretaker.

“Phase 2” consisted of an ablution fa-cility with change rooms that was com-

pleted at the end of May.“Sadly large portions of the fence we-

re stolen, which then opened the areafor foot traffic etc.

It is not conducive to try and main-tain a pitch or to leave equipment in thearea in such circumstances. An appli-cation has been made to province forthe upgrading of this sports field in linewith the provincial programme. Thefencing will have to be redone. Moneyfor this has not been secured in the cur-rent financial year. This will thereforenot be a short term solution to the chal-lenges faced with the development ofthe stadium,” the spokesman conclu-ded.

He did not provide answers on whyother aspects of “phase 1” were also notcompleted.

In celebration of Woman’s Month, theMerafong City Local Municipality hos-ted a women’s march on August 8,2014.

The march took place on a Fridaymorning and women from all over Me-rafong gathered at the Civic Centre inCarletonville and marched to the Ma-gistrates Court in Oberholzer to handover a memorandum to one of the offi-cials at the court. Women of different

age groups stood together wearing redcaps and T-shirts outside the CivicCentre listening to speakers who moti-vated the women to stand together inthis long battle against the continuousabuse of women and children throug-hout South Africa.

During the programme a momentwas taken to light up candles to showthat there is still hope for a better futu-re in the struggle against abuse. Thewomen then took off, rushing as a uni-ted force with banners and posters to-

ward the court. The memorandumwas read and handed over to a seniorofficial of the court and it entailed therequest for the court to be less lenienton rapists even if they are first time of-fenders and that more programmesshould be implemented to offer helpto the victims.

The crowd of women were led to thecourt by the Safety Department andSouth African Police Service to keepthe march under control. It was a pea-ceful protest that was organised tounite the women of Merafong. Althougthe march ran smoothly, a minor inci-

dent took place when a young lady sus-tained injuries from an accident rightin front of the Civic Centre. She wasquickly rushed to the nearest hospitaland the march proceeded.

The women then walked back pea-cefully to the Civic Centre to havelunch and soon the crowd dispersedto their homes. The message was clearand most women were very happyabout being part of such an event forthe first time. A young lady, Mihlali Fa-ni from Carletonville stated “It’s a gre-at initiative from the municipality asit reminds women of their rights.”

A young cartoonist who has recentlymoved to Carletonville, finally had hisdream come true.

He entered an art competition forthe Safer South Africa Campaignwhich required young people to sub-mit their artwork on an A4 page withdrawn graphics and a positive messa-ge relating to crime issues. TebogoKgaudi (25) who resides in Carleton-ville won first prize - a R1 000 in cash.

He used a pen to do his drawings onan A4 page and after a period of morethan ten years he eventually reachedhis goal which was to win the toughcompetition.

His drawing talent was acknowled-ged by his late mother at the age of 7when he began drawing pic-tures on the.

He then moved todrawing portraits ofhis family andfriends who prefer-red his drawingsover actual photo-graphs.

It hasn’t been an easyroad for the artist as hewas not always able to ac-cess the art materialsthat he needed due to alack of financial sup-port. Eventhough thematerials we-re quite cost-ly, he endu-red with thehelp andsupportof peo-ple whobelie-ved inhim.

He isnow wor-king cas-ually tomake hisends meetand sustain his career

because he doesn’t believe in hand-outs. “I feel more free when I am doingart, it brings light and the beauty of itinspires me,” he says. His role modelis South Africa’s most popular car-toonist, Jonathan Zapiro who has ma-de a name through his controversialcartoons.

Art has played a big part in helpingTebogo to escape bad influences andthe pressures that comes with beingyoung.

Drawing was also his only therapyduring troubling times.

He sees a great future in this careerline and he aspires to furthering hisstudies in the field of graphic desig-ning and fine art.

He is a positive ambitious youngman from Leedoringstad in NorthWest and he has never failed to dreameven if he still faces financial challen-ges like many other talented young pe-ople.

He is open to anybody who would beinterested in assisting him in any wayto further his career.

This is Merafong’s new patrol dog,Shadow’s way of showing his handlerhow much he loves her, and she allowsit because she loves him just as much.

Not only is Shadow, the German She-pherd, new to Merafong, but so is thefact that his handler, Constable NellyMahatalle, is Merafong’s first ever fe-male dog-handler.

Mahatalle joined the SAPS’s K9 (DogUnit) in 2010, but it was only in Janua-ry this year that she attended what shecalls - Dog Unit School - in Atridgevillefor six months of intensive training.“The training is physically very toughand it takes a lot to complete it,” Maha-talle tells with a content smile, “But Idid it.”

Mahatalle says she attended Dog UnitSchool because she loves new challen-ges, and knew that having a dog to workwith would add a new dimension to eve-ryday police duties and would exposeher to all sorts of new situations.

“At school the dog you train with be-comes your partner,” Mahatalle ex-plains. “The dog gets taught to react ex-clusively to your voice and instructi-ons.”

She smiles and says that it is true thata dog truly becomes a man, or in thiscase, a woman’s, best friend. “Nobody

can come near me when Shadow is bymy side,” Mahatalle explains. Shouldanyone approach her aggressively withher best friend beside her, he will pro-bably rip them to shreds.

Shadow’s purpose as a fellow mem-ber of the SAPS is to help trace andcatch suspects. Although Mahatalle ne-ver just lets him loose when they arelooking for suspects, his leash is extra-long so that he has freedom to run afterthe bad guys.

“I have to run with him, however, sothat he does not run out of leash,” Ma-hatalle laughs.

Shadow’s diet, much like all his othercanine-colleagues at the unit, consistsof normal dog food, just once a day andMahatalle says that they have to have abucket of fresh water at all times. Shesays that she always has little treats(usually small pieces of biltong) in herpocket.

“I use these to say thank you to him,”she says with a warm smile. It is clearthat there is a very strong bond betweenMahatalle and Shadow.

Interesting facts about Shadow, andother police dogs, is that they only gettrained from the age of two years. Theywork with just one handler, and the on-ly other person they get used to (alt-hough the bond is nothing like the onethey share with their handlers) is theperson who feeds them.

When their handlers are sick or on

leave, their canine partners wait for themat the unit.

Should Mahatalle, for example, decideto apply for a completely different positi-on in a new department away from theK9 Unit, Shadow will get taken back bythe state and at Dog Unit School, he willbe trained to work with a new handler, butthis is done by professionals.

The staff (or dog) compliment atMerafong’s K9 Unit consists ofone tracker dog, one fire inves-tigation dog, one patrol/explo-sive dog, two purely explosivesdogs, seven patrol dogs (inclu-ding Shadow) and three narco-tics dogs.

This comes as no surprisewhen considering the fact thatthey get ‘dipped’ every seven daysand get bathed once a month tomake sure that they are tick-free.

Should they fall ill, they vi-sit a specific veterinarian inPretoria who sees to their me-dical needs.

For as long as Mahatalle hasfood, fresh water, biltong andtennis-ball treats for Shadow,he should not be going to Preto-ria anytime soon though!

The kind-hearted Khutsong SAPSmembers made it possible for old wo-men in the I’Kaya Legae Old Age Homein Khutsong to enjoy Women’s Day.

Every member of the KhutsongSAPS gave R5.00 toward the event.

“With this money we bought ingredi-ents to make the grannies soup,” toldConstable Zonke Dyosini, Spokes-person of the Khutsong SAPS.

The Women’s Network, Visible Poli-cing and the Khutsong SAPS joinedhands on Saturday to remind older la-dies of their worth and to spoil them.

Three students busy with internshipsat the SAVF (Suid-Afrikaanse VroueFederasie) branch in Carletonville, re-cently WOW’ed local women.

The students needed to complete aproject for Women’s Day on Saturday,August 9, and came up with a remar-kable, life-changing idea.

“WOW stands for Women Of Worth,”the three beautiful students, Lin-Clai-re van Wyk, Landi Mostert and JessicaKwenanyane explained. The day hada catching slogan as well, reading;“When you look good, you feel good.When you feel good, you do good.”

The SAVF has a home for unemploy-ed families called the Deurgangshuis.“We realised that a lot of the womenin this place become laid-back becau-se they are provided for. They are notdoing much to help themselves. Theydon’t have any interest in finding jobs

or moving on,” the students explained.“We also realise, however, that it is verydifficult for a woman to market herselfto any potential employer when shedoes not look good and feel good aboutherself.”

The students were on a mission tohelp instil feelings of self-worth in wo-men who do not really have any andwho, most likely, do not have otherswho appreciate them either.

With the help of three local busines-ses, as well as individual women whowere willing to help out, the invited la-dies were in for a day of pamperingand spoils that they had not experien-ced in a long time, if ever.

A hair-stylist was called in fromLichtenburg and voluntarily helpedthe students with makeovers.

“We put make-up on their faces andstyled their hair,” they tell.

“We decorated the hall for them, al-lowed them to make their own frames

for a ‘Before’ and ‘After’ photo and eachwoman was given products to main-tain her new look.”

The ladies all left with handbags, fil-led with shampoo, conditioner, soap,and make-up that was used on theirfaces, mirrors, an apron and a face-cloth. “One could literally see the con-fidence growing in each woman whenshe saw how beautiful she could loo-ked with just a little effort.”

At the end of the day, helium bal-

loons with tags reading “I want to letgo of...” were given to each of the 24women. On the tags they had to fill inwhat they would like to let go of, whichwas very therapeutic.

“Some were heartbreaking to read,”said one student. “They wanted to letgo of ‘feeling worthless’, ‘depression’and various other experiences.”

Just by viewing some of the photos,one can see the ladies were thrilledand had a great time.

The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mr Mduduzi Manana recently launched and declared the next 10 years – 2014-2024 – as the “Decade of the Artisan”. The month of August 2014 will be known as “The month of FET/TVET Colleges”.

Vuselela FET College fully supports the “Decade of the Artisan” campaign, which seeks to promote Artisanship as a career of choice for South Africa’s youth, while also highlighting skills development opportunities that are available for Artisans. Vuselela FET College is the

only FET College in the North West that has a decentralised Trade Test Centre at Matlosana Centre for Artisans & Learnerships just outside Stilfontein.

DECADE OF THE ARTISAN 2014-2024

An artisan is a skilled worker. Artisans play a crucial role in Engineering Trades. There are many different trades, but unfortunately Vuselela FET College can not offer them all.

At Vuselela FET College you can become an artisan in the following trades;

Boiler Maker, Bricklaying, Carpentry, Electrician, Fitter, Fitter & Turner, Hairdresser, Millwright, Motor Mechanics, Turner and Welder.

The following is the transitional arrangement for access to Trade Test as signed by the DG on 28 July 2014 for contracted learners.

NOTE: This replaces what was previously known as “Section 13” Trade Testing.

Candidates must apply for a Trade Test at the relevant SETA, and subject to the three following criteria being met, will be allowed access to a trade test:

Meet at least one of the following minimum educational requirements:

• N2 Certificate including the four relevant subjects of maths, engineering science, trade theory and a fourth subject as required by the trade; or

• Technical trade theory programmes quality assured by a SETA deemed to be equivalent to NQF Level 3; or

• Relevant Engineering NC(V) Certificate with seven subjects at NQF Level 3; or

• Technical Grade 11 with Mathematics, Science, Language and related trade theory subject; or

• Relevant (directly related to the trade theory subjects) N6 certificate or National Technical Diploma (T, S or N stream.)

On 30 July Fochville SquashClub was to host Klerksdorp 2Team in the second round ofthe North West Squash ReserveLeague.

The Klerksdorp team werenot prepared to drive throughto Fochville and surrenderedthe full allocation of 16 pointsto the Fochville Club. This hashanded Fochville the lead in theReserve League by one point.

Last week the Fochville teamhad a bye and played their nextmatch against Defence 2, at De-fence in Potchefstroom on 13August.

Fochville Hoër-skool se span staanbekend as die“Stick-o-mons” enword deur QuintisDippenaar, ’n ge-soute en bekendehokkie afrigter, af-gerig.

Fochies se spanhet op Dinsdag, 12Augustus teen Roo-depoort, Krugers-dorp High School enBekker te staan ge-kom en sal op Don-derdag, 14 Augus-tus, met Bastion enMaragon kragtemeet.

Die finale sal opVrydag 15 Augustusby Noordheuwel ge-speel word.

In an excellent, much-needed initiativeby the GDE (Gauteng Department ofEducation), learners from the threehigh schools in Khutsong were madevery well aware of the consequences ofcrime.

“Each school selected ten learnersthey felt would best benefit from a pri-son visit,” told Constable NtombizonkeDyosini, Spokesperson of the Khuts-ong SAPS who helped co-ordinate thistour.

Transport and food packs were pro-vided by the GDE and the 30 learners,from Relebogile, Badirile and Tswas-ongu were off to the Johannesburg Cor-rectional Service prison, also known as

‘Sun City.’ Assisting Dyosini were mem-bers of the Khutsong SAPS’s YouthDesk and Victim Empowerment Centre

Dyosini says the visit was definitelyan eye-opener. “The learners were gi-ven a chance to see what life in prisonis really like,” she says. “They saw whatcircumstances people who have nofreedom live in.”

The learners were taken to the juve-nile prison in order to identify betterwith prison life and see that they are notexempt from the consequences suffe-red by those who commit crime.

Some of the prisoners spoke to thelearners as well, telling them that crimeis not worth giving up your life for.“They told the learners that crime doesnot pay and warned them not to fall intothe traps of bad friends,” Dyosini ex-plained. “They said that crime causesinjury and sometimes even costs youyour life, showing the learners how so-me of them get tortured by their fellow-inmates.”

“You’ll have fun in gangs, but whenthe arrests start and you appear incourt, you will stand before the courtall on your own and be charged and yo-ur friends will be nowhere in sight,” theprisoners, some who have sentences of28 years and the likes to serve, told thelearners

Dyosini says that she feels the visitwas highly impactful and successful.

TheSouthAfricanMinesSportsAsso-ciation (SAMSA) Netball Tournamentwas held from August 7 to 9 at SibanyeGold’s Kloof recreation facilities. SAM-SA is the governing body of all miningsport in South Africa.

Fochies het alle fassette in die wed-stryd oorheers en sodoende hul plek asdie wenners van hulle poel versterk.

Ry-no Heever en Corrie Jordaan, glo hulledie span sal die Fochies se onoorwonnerekord in vanjaar se reeks kan behou.Hulle glo dat die span se prestasies totdusver bewys dat die skool se rugbydiepte het, wat uiters belangrik gaanwees in die uitklop-fases van die reeksen ook vir volgende jaar se bepalings.

I&J Lofts se wenduif vlieg hok toemet ’n spoed van 1 046 meter per mi-nuut en palm ook ‘n vierde plek in.Die tweede plek gaan aan JohnzelLofts en ‘n derde gaan aan Wikus Vil-joen. In die twee ope-afdelings vliegdie wenduif van Danie Erasmus hoktoe met ‘n spoed van 1 080 meterper minuut, tweede en derde plekkegaan I&J Lofts en’ n derde plek gaanaan Wikus Viljoen.

Die Goudveld Posduifklub het die na-week van 10 Augustus hul duiwe oor ‘nafstand van 655km van Richmont laatvlieg. In die jaaroue-kampioenskappeafdeling vlieg Stephen Mathee se wen-duif hok toe met ‘n pragspoed van 1089meter per minuut, tweede plek gaan aanManie Schoombie, derde gaan aan NickMathee en die vierde aan Stephen Ma-thee. In die ope-afdeling vlieg StephenMathee se wenduif hok toe met ‘n prags-poed van 1141 meter per minuut. Hypalm ook ‘n tweede plek in en die derdeplek gaan aan Manie Schoombie en dievierde aan Stephen Mathee.

Wes Wits Rugbyklub se spanne moesdie afgelope Vrydag die knie teen hulopponente buig.

Al drie Wes Wits se spanne het diéaand op Marks Park, die tuisveldevan die Johannesburg Polisie, in diesemi-finale van hul liga uitgedraf. On-gelukkig moes al drie die spanne dieaftog teen hul teenstanders blaas.Wes Wits se o/20’s moes met ‘n telling5 - 43 die knie teen UJ buig, terwyl dietweede span 12 - 20 teen Khosa ver-loor het. Die Eerstes moes met ‘n tel-ling van 19 - 28 die aftog teen Harle-quins blaas. “Ons het met ons aan-koms by die veld gesien dat net eenlig werk. Die res van die aand het ooknie goed verloop nie. Ek voel egtersteeds baie gelukkig en trots op dieouens dat ons so ver gevorder het. Ekwil graag dankie sê aan ons toeskou-ers en borge wat ons die hele jaar on-dersteun het,” het die klub se voorsit-ter, Barney de Koker, Dinsdag aan dieHerald vertel. The u/15 netball team of Badirile High Schoolin Khutsong recently walked off with a top posi-tion in the South African Netball Champions-hips.

Badirile represented Merafong, GautengWest and Gauteng during the national champi-onship that was held in Boksburg on August1 and 2. “They ended in position 3 after losinggames against two schools. One was fromNorth West and the other one from the EasternCape. As for other provinces, our girls emergedvictorious,” a representative of Badirile, MrElias Tsotetsi, told the Herald this week.

The team from Machakela Secondary Schoolfrom North West walked off as winners of thecategory while the girls of the Humansdorp Se-condary School in the Eastern Cape came se-cond.

“The school thanks our municipality’sSports and Recreation Department for theirexcellent support. Our team was presented asreal professionals,” Tsotetsi also noted.

He further mentioned that the school was al-so sponsored by a local business and thankedthe players, the school’s principal, Mr LuckyMotlhabane, and other people involved in theteam’s activities for their commitment.

Merafong se eie junior gholf-ster, OckertBrits, het weer uitstekend tydens ‘n in-ternasionale gholftoernooi gevaar.

Ockerthet van31Julie tot2Augustusaan die US Kids wêreld-gholfkampioen-skap in Pinehurst in Noord-Carolina, ‘ndeelstaat in die suidooste van die Ver-enigde State van Amerika, deelgeneem.

Tydens dié byeenkoms het juniorgholfspelers van altesaam 55 lande inverskeie ouderdomsgroepe meegeding.In Ockert se ouderdomsgroep, dieo/9-afdeling, was daar 148 spelers watdeelgeneem het.

Volgens Ockert se pa, Ockie Brits(sr.), was die spel baie taai en die jongspelers moes twee van die kompetisie sedrie dae in gietende reën kompeteer.

Die jong ster se vasberadenheid hetegter verseker dat hy nie vir ander moesterugstaan nie. Hy het op die eerste dag‘n telling van 75 gespeel, wat hom die16de plek in sy ouderdomsgroep gegeehet. Op die tweede dag moes spel aan-vanklik as gevolg van die swaar reën uit-gestel word. Ockert het egter op die ouend ‘n telling van 78 behaal wat hom26ste in sy groep geplaas het.

Ockert se veggees het hom egter ge-dryf om ‘n uitstekende laaste dag te be-haal, waartydens hy vyf voëltjies behaalen net een hou oor die hele 18 putjieslaat valhet.Hyhetdiédagsybeste tellingooit van 68 op ‘n Par 72 PGA gholfbaanbehaal.

Dié telling het hom die tiende plek insy afdeling besorg en hom die besteSuid-Afrikaanse speler in sy ouder-domsgroep gemaak.

Ockert se prestasie het hom ook outo-maties vir die Maleisiese, Europese enWêreldkampioenskappe vir 2015 ge-kwalifiseer.

Ondanks dié prestasie was Ockert, ófOJ soos hy ook bekendstaan, reeds diéweek weer terug by die skool by Laer-skool Dagbreek en het hy opgeruimdvan sy afgelope groot kompetisie vertel.“Dit was baie lekker. Ek het probeer omin die top tien te kom en het dit regge-kry,” het hy vrolik vertel.

Volgens sy ma, Hanlie, het die an-der Suid-Afrikaanse spelers wat aan dietoernooi deelgeneem het, twee derde, ‘nvierde en ‘n negende plek behaal. Uit aldié spelers is Ockert egter die enigsteeen wat ‘n gewone staatskool bywoon enhomniebykansvoltydsopgholfkan toe-spits nie. Hy het ook sy skool vir die hulpwat hulle hom gee, bedank.
