During the Year 9 Journey Day last Tuesday, teachers met with each of their classes for discussion and activity, and gathered for the Calling ceremony on Mount Barker Summit.

The Journey is a compulsory and integral part of the Year 9 Christian Living programme, yet we ‘called’ our young men and women to join us on this journey, as if it was optional. As outlined to our students, the calling is an invitation to fully engage with the programme and learn who you really are and ways to relate to others and the wider world. Challenges will vary in intensity depending on the individual, and our students will be asked to reflect deeply in a myriad of ways.

At the Departure ceremony that evening, students and their parents met in a packed Atelier theatre where teacher guides outlined the students’ journey year and were given their blessing by the parents. As I listened to the teachers present their section, I looked around to witness parents engaging with their sons/daughters and the event itself. The passion and commitment was clear for all to see.

One of our College’s Strategic Goals is to strengthen our links to our community. Through this event and others, the connections between parents, teachers and students has been highlighted and advanced. We are all united in wanting our students to grow into happy, healthy and content young men and women. Through good communication between all concerned, there is a greater likelihood of achieving this goal,

and to achieve it well.

I encourage all our parents to fully engage with their sons/daughters and keep asking how they are going at school. Don’t accept a simple response such as ‘good’ or ‘fine’, instead search for deeper connections. We are empowered as educators when we are able to work with our parents towards agreed goals for our students, so please help us as we strive to strengthen our partnerships into the future.

Mr Jamie CameronWellbeing Director

I had the opportunity to spend Thursday morning last week with a group of Battunga Year 7s on camp at Mylor. We spent the morning competing in the River Race activity

against two other teams – one from Aroona and one from Naturi.

From building and climbing a tower, ten milk crates high, to untangling a giant human knot, to using three canoes and a length of rope to build a raft capable of ferrying 14 or so passengers down the river … and back again… the competition was fierce!

I watched with fascination as my Battunga team nominated particular members for particular roles based on previously observed traits and skills:

• who should carry the map and navigate?• who should climb the tower?• who should tie the knots to hold the raft

together?

I’m pleased to say the team handled themselves with an impressive level of respect, integrity and cooperation. But then, we were winning for most of the race!

It struck me that maintaining a positive and harmonious team spirit is easy when everything’s going well. It’s when the chips are down - it’s when things start to fall apart and team members begin making costly mistakes - that’s when relationships get strained and everyone starts playing the blame game.

It struck me that this is where we, as a Christian Community, can (and must!) make a difference.

As a Christian community we have been given the privilege of knowing (and showing) where

tolerance and forgiveness and genuine love come from.

In Luke 15:11-32 Jesus tells a parable of a son who demands his inheritance before his father has even died, and, having received it, promptly travels to a far country and squanders the fortune on wild living. Broke and hungry, the son returns to his father with his tail between his legs, hoping his father will at least employ him as a servant.

The father sees his long lost son approaching from a distance and runs to welcome him with open arms. The son tries to apologise but the father doesn’t even let him finish – he forgives him completely and reinstates him into the family. There are implications – the fortune can’t be recovered, but the relationship is restored to its original rightful state.

God gives us the same unconditional love and forgiveness, and he gives us the ability to pass it on – to our friends, to our families, to our workmates, to anyone who does wrong by us.If we, as a caring Christian community, won’t demonstrate God’s love and forgiveness … who will?

God bless you.

College Chaplain Call to Faith Lutheran CollegeRecently, our College Chaplain, Mr Adam Yeager received a call to undertake the role of College Chaplain at Faith Lutheran College, Tanunda in the Barossa Valley. While uncommon, the calling of a Chaplain does occur from time to time and this call was recently approved by the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) and at a meeting of the Barossa Pastors Fraternal.

Adam has four weeks to prayerfully consider this call and if he does decide to accept, it will see him possibly undertake this role sometime before the end of the 2016 school year. Obviously, Adam has much to consider.

Prayer, discussions with a wide range of people, our individual and collective support, visiting Faith Lutheran College and personal reflections all form part of the process. As a community our thoughts and prayers will also be with Adam, his family, our College and Faith Lutheran College.

Middle School House Leader WorkshopOn Tuesday, 24 February our Middle School House Leaders facilitated a workshop for the Year 6 students at St Michaels in Hahndorf. They addressed topics surrounding leadership, including what makes an effective leader and how to make positive changes in our own lives and the lives of others. St Michaels have many leadership groups, such as SRC, House Captains and School Captains (The Executive), and focus areas of interest such as Library, Environment, Technology, School Events and School Management / Office helpers. The Cornerstone Leaders assisted their younger counterparts in identifying individual and collective strengths and formulating a plan to implement a specific initiative in the weeks to come. We learned much about our own leadership throughout this project and thank St Michaels for the opportunity to strengthen the links between our two schools.

Year 11 Workplace Learning (WPL)Just a reminder that all Year 11 students are required to complete Work Experience in Term 2. Paperwork for

this was posted home nearly two weeks ago – please let the College know if you have not yet received this. As discussed at the Year 11 Parent Information Night last Thursday, please remember that there are new guidelines and processes in place, so please read the information sent home carefully to avoid any confusion. Students should now be contacting employers to organise their placement if they have not already done so. Work Experience will occur for all Year 11 students during Week 5 of Term 2 (30 May – 3 June) except for those students who are currently studying Outdoor Education, in which case they will complete theirs in Week 10 of Term 2 (4-8 July).

Any queries or need for support please contact Anthony Doyle, Helen Mason or Virginia Gare.

Sandra Berry WorkshopsA few weeks ago, we were very fortunate to have Sandra Berry from Sandra Berry Real Estate speak to all of our Year 10s and interested Year 11 and 12 students. Sandra spoke passionately about the Schools Auction Idol program, a program designed to allow students an opportunity to be mentored by a local industry expert to learn about Real Estate, public speaking and self-confidence, with the aim to compete against other students as Auctioneers. Three of our students, Corey Noske-Daniel (Year 12), Jed Bramley and Sebastian Brook (Year 10) have been spending time with Sandra every Friday at lunch-time and have excelled and learnt so much in a limited space of time. We thank Sandra and her team so much for their time and support of our students.

Year 12 PE Aquatics Camp As part of the Year 12 PE course, students participated in an intensive three day Aquatic Unit at Murray Bridge. Students were able to elect either sailing or kayaking and had to ‘study’ their chosen pursuit for approximately 18 hours.

The results from this camp will go towards the students final SACE grade for Physical Education.

All students can be proud of the efforts they put in, and it’s exciting to think they’re well underway with their courses.

Battunga Focus WeekBattunga Focus Week 2016, held during Week 4, was bigger and better than ever! Throughout the week students and staff had the opportunity to spread some love and kindness by sending Friendly Frogs (freckly Melba’s chocolate frogs) and Buddy Buds (beautiful red roses from Mt Barker Blooms and Baskets) to one another, complete with personalised notes of appreciation.

Battunga’s tireless team of leaders delivered over 750 Friendly Frogs throughout the week, along with almost 100 Buddy Buds.

On Friday, a non-uniform day helped enliven the celebrations as guests were treated to delicious chocolate mousse, sparkling apple juice and even more sparkling conversation at our Lunch with a Bunch event on ‘cibo’. Students from all Houses and year levels enjoyed our dress up photo booth while a live band, consisting of Year 11 and12 students, created a convivial atmosphere for all to enjoy.

Thanks to all who contributed and participated. Cornerstone definitely felt the love in Week 4!

Year 7 Camp ReportEnergy, enthusiasm and engagement! These three words spring to mind when I reflect back on the Year 7 Camp last week. Our 150+ Year 7 students fully participated in all aspects of an action-packed camp agenda.

The days were filled with challenges, water, mud, thrills and shared experiences. Many wonderful memories were created to last for many years.

Thank you to all the amazing teachers who came and shared in the fun!

SAPSASA – Barker District Swimming CarnivalOn Thursday, 3 March Cornerstone competed in the annual ‘Courier Cup’ at the Mountain Pool, Mount Barker. Eleven Year 7 students represented the College in the U/12 and U/13 age groups: Ethan Baxter, Madeleine Beaton, Jack Cafarella, Abbey Cummings, Alex Jones, Rebecca Koch, Morgan Main, Lucy Marshall, Maddison Nyp, Duncan Rogers and Sophie Seppelt.

Cornerstone had a very successful day, finishing 1st overall in the Barker District. Each member of the team competed with a positive attitude and represented Cornerstone extremely well. It was great to see lots of support and encouragement.

Congratulations to Alex Jones for winning the ‘Courier Cup’ – Fastest swimmer in the 100m Freestyle. Alex was also the fastest swimmer in the Breaststroke and was awarded a trophy for both events.

Congratulations to the following students who achieved either a first, second or third place for their respective events on the day: Alex Jones, Jack Cafarella, Duncan Rogers, Sophie Seppelt, Abbey Cummings and Ethan Baxter. In total, Cornerstone achieved; six 1st placings, seven 2nd placings, and three 3rd placings.

This week students will be selected to compete in the Barker District Team to compete in the Interschool Swimming Carnival at the Marion Swimming Centre.

Thank you to the parents who came to support the students on the day and for assisting with recording.

Driver AwarenessOn Tuesday, 1 March, students in Years 10 and 11 had the opportunity to learn more about road safety and their responsibilities as road users. With many students already learning to drive and others not too far away, the message was a timely one.

Students in both year levels enjoyed a presentation from a member of SAPOL’s road

safety team, in which the police officers shared their experiences of dealing with car accidents. The SAPOL team also discussed the most current road rules and answered questions from the student audience.

Year 11 students attended a second session in the afternoon in which staff from Adelaide Hills Toyota demonstrated how to change a tyre and how to check and change engine oil. Driving instructor Steve Highet spoke to the students about the common issues learner drivers face and reiterated some key road rules designed to keep students safe. Senior Constable Libby Bruce showed students key equipment that police use such as speed cameras, while Senior Constable David Edwards explained the defect process on a crashed vehicle.

Thank you to all of our presenters for sharing their time and expertise with our students. A special thanks to Adelaide Hills Toyota who kindly funded a BBQ and cool drinks to feed our ravenous Year 11s.

Student Leader DayLast week, four of our six College Leaders attended a gathering of other College Leaders from various Lutheran schools around South Australia, held at Endeavour College in Mawson Lakes. The goal of the day was to grow in their leadership capabilities as well as to expand their understanding of ’servant leadership.’ Students from as far away as Mount Gambier and Port Lincoln participated in workshop exercises lead by Emma Graetz, from Grassroots Training and Australian Lutheran College. Along with the leadership training the event gave our College Leaders a good opportunity to network with their peers from other Lutheran schools and to exchange stories about leadership in their schools.

Open Boys Knockout CricketCornerstone recently competed in our first game of Open Boys Knockout Cricket. Following a bye in the first round, the boys faced a St Francis team keen on revenge after losing in the final over in the corresponding game last year. Cornerstone were sent in to bat and were in early trouble losing the first three wickets with only 28 runs on the board. Wickets continued to steadily fall as the Cornerstone batsmen chose to hit the ball in the air at catching height,

and the catches were gladly taken. Ryan McEachern (pictured left) batted sensibly with the tail, managing to farm the strike to take the score from 6 for 42 to all out 108.

Cornerstone began well with the ball, restricting the run rate early, with some quality line and

length bowling from Austin Abraham and Ryan McEachern. The build-up of this pressure eventually resulted in a run of wickets with Jordy Aitchison claiming three quick ones, leaving St Francis in trouble at 7/ 75 and Cornerstone seemingly heading for a win. However, some late innings hitting by the St Francis tail and some below standard bowling resulted in an exciting win for St Francis in the second to last over.

The workshops are available to parents of all year levels, although they may be most relevant to those with children in Year 10, 11 and 12. The first workshop will be held in the evening of Wednesday 6 April, with repeat workshops being offered on Thursday 16 June, Tuesday 25 October. Each will be held in Anakalypsi (Library) 6.45pm for a 7.00pm start, finishing at 9.00pm.
