Parable of the Pharisee & The Tax Collector
Two Men, Two Prayers, Two Attitudes, Two Verdicts
Luke 18: 9-14
Page 2 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ,
Last weekend Jesus addressed us on the need for persistent prayer. This week He uses the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector to draw our hearts to a God-centered not a self-centered prayer.
God-centered prayer is a communication with God who is the principal player in the prayer. Self-centered has man as the center. The Pharisee (self-righteously) inserts himself and his pride as the center of his pray-er. Fittingly, St. Luke indicates that he prayed to himself. On the contrary, the tax collector (a humble sinner) humbles himself before the Lord making God the focus of his yearning.
Eleonore Stump puts this in the most succinct words below:
The Worst Kind of Pride
In the Gospel Reading, Jesus tells a parable about a Pharisee and a tax collector, in order to teach a lesson about pride. As Jesus tells the parable, the Pharisee is not pleasing to God; the tax collector is.
In the parable, what the Pharisee says in his prayer is this: “I thank you, God, that I am not like the rest of humanity—greedy, dishonest, adulterous—or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.”
The tax collector just prays for God to have mercy on him, a sinful man.
Now what exactly is wrong with the Pharisee’s prayer?
True humility is seeing that every excellence you have is a gift. Notice that the parable doesn’t doubt the Pharisee’s truthful-ness: he does have real moral excellence. And notice too that the Pharisee doesn’t congratulate himself on this moral excel-lence in himself. He thanks God for it; he gives God all the credit for it.
So what exactly is wrong with this Pharisee?
Think about it this way. Aquinas says that there are four kinds of pride.
(1) There’s foolish pride. You think you have an excellence which you don’t have, like a child who thinks he’s the best basket-ball player in the world.
(2) There’s the pride of the self-made man. You think you have an excellence you do have, but you think you got that excel-lence for yourself, without anybody’s help.
(3) There’s the sneakily self-congratulatory pride. You think you have an excellence you do have, and you recognize that God gave it to you; but you assume God gave it to you because he knew that you would make such good use of it.
(4) And then there’s the most self-deceptive kind of pride. You think you have an excellence you do have, and you recognize that you have it because God gave it, and you acknowledge that God gave it because he is so good, not because you are so nice—BUT you are glad others don’t have it and you hope they don’t get it.
Now we see what is wrong with the Pharisee, don’t we? He accepts that his excellence is a gift from the Lord. He just doesn’t want anybody else to have what he has. He likes looking down on that tax collector! And that is the worst kind of pride.
True humility is seeing that every excellence you have is a gift from your loving Lord and is given to you so that you can share it with others in love and rejoice with them when they have it too. St. Patrick will be remembering all our recently deceased at the All Souls Day Mass on Wednesday November 2, 2016 at 7:00PM. We would like to invite any parishioner who has lost a family member in the past year to partici-pate in the candle lighting ceremony. There will be can-dles to light, but we also will be offering a Memorial Votive candle that you can take home for a donation of $4.00. This candle will have the deceased’s name written upon it.

If you would like to have your loved one’s picture displayed, please bring a picture (no larger than 5x7) the week-end of October 29th/30th. We will leave the display up for the month of November and pictures may be taken home the weekend of November 26th/27th. Please put your name and address on the back of the picture.

Vocation Corner: Finding God’s Plan While
Carrying the Cross
As a priest I have an opportunity to visit people in the hospital and in Rehab Facilities quite often, and as you might imagine, the outlook and the spirits of the individuals whom I meet run the spectrum. Some of them are ready to give up hope whereas others have smiles on their faces no matter what it is that they are enduring.
From time to time I am so blessed with the opportunity to be inspired myself and to be reminded of God’s goodness and God’s plan through the words of those who I go to visit. Within the past few weeks I’ve had 2 such instances.
The first came from a young lady who very unexpectedly was diagnosed with a painful disease that has her in and out of the hospital. She is one of the most positive people that I’ve ever met, she never complains, and she repeatedly says that she knows that God has a plan, that she knows that God is good, and that she knows that God is going to get her through this. Her strength that comes from Christ inspires me to have a deeper faith that God knows exactly what He is doing in each of our lives!
The second inspiration came from a woman (who is also one of the most positive people that I’ve ever met!) who is in a rehab facility and isn’t sure when she’ll be released to return home. She of course wants to be home, but she’s sure that if she has to stay longer than it’s because God is calling her to continue to be encouraging and to be able to bring hope and positivity to the other people who are there with her!
Both of them are inspiring because they know that God is at work even when things are tough! So never give up hope and know that God is with you and that He has a beautiful plan for you!
Jubilee Year of Mercy Thirtieth Sunday Ordinary Time
Today's Gospel graces us with a beautiful prayer that can make every day of our lives a jubilee of mercy: "O God, be merciful to me a sin-
ner" (Luke 18:13). Religious Israelites despised the tax collector who prayed it, for collaborating with Gentile occu-piers and handling currency that bore the "divine" emper-or's graven image. But the Pharisee's long-winded self-congratulation, mixed with self-righteous condemnation, was no "prayer" at all. "The Pharisee . . . spoke this prayer to himself" (18:11, emphasis added). Praying the tax col-lector's simple, sincere, succinct cry for mercy acknowl-edges our own sinfulness, and "welcomes" other sinners as brothers and sisters with whom we can identify, even empathize, echoing Pope Francis' famous comment about not being the one to judge. Indeed, the tax collector "went home justified" (18:14), that is, restored to God's friend-ship, for God's mercy is not prize achieved but gift re-ceived. "Let your prayer be brief: for tax collector, prodigal son, and dying thief were all reconciled to God by a single phrase!" (Saint John Climacus, 7th century). --Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. S. When times are tough, many of our elderly neighbors go without in order to pay their bills. Friends discovered that one of their neighbors had plumbing issues, so had been going with-out running water. These friends helped with
fixtures and found a handyman to work at low cost. SVdP also assisted in paying a few bills to allow this elderly man to once again have running water in his home. Proverbs 31:20 “She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.”

Knights Ask For Support of “Holiday Meals”
Knights of Columbus Council 1288 will again be raising funds to provide holiday meals to those in need in our community. St. Patrick
Council 16446 will be assisting 1288 in this holiday pro-ject with food distribution and fundraising. This will be the 9th year the Knights will undertake this rewarding and much-appreciated project. Their mission is simple: they raise money to purchase food and, through a partnership with Meijers Stores, they are able to stretch the money that is donated a long way. The food is packed in such a way that each family receives everything they need to prepare a proper holiday meal. One hundred percent of the funds donated is used to purchase food that benefits needy families in our own McHenry area. Any amount you can give, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. The distribution of the Thanksgiving meals will be on Saturday, November 19th and the Christmas meal distribution will be on Saturday December 17th. Everyone is welcome to come help sort and pack the meals at the Church of Holy Apostles. Please mail your donation to Knights of Columbus Council 1288, PO Box 148, McHenry, IL 60051. The Knights hope that they can count on your support.
