Some thoughts about getting to Uni if you don’t get the ATAR you want …

Some universities have bonus points such as for results obtained in certain subjects or for the region you live in e.g. Newcastle Uni provides bonus points for gaining good results in some HSC courses and also bonus points if you live on the Central Coast. Some have special schemes to assist students to gain places such as the UTS Guaranteed Entry scheme and the University of Wollongong Selective Entry program. Educational Access Scheme – an opportunity to appeal if there are extenuating circumstances for you – this can possibly provide an avenue into a degree or bonus points to be used to help gain admission to a degree. The EAS has various names used by each institution e.g. UTS refers to it as inpUTS. UNSW uses the term UNSW ACCESS. Entry into Uni later e.g. The Open Foundation course at Newcastle Uni and University Preparation Program (UPP) at UNSW are examples of programs for mature age students to qualify for university.

STAT Test – while most universities do not accept the STAT test completed by Year 12 students, some universities offer the STAT test as a possible alternate entry method to university – see UAC website (http://www.uac.edu.au/stat/) for more details.

These ideas need to be investigated as to whether they apply for the course that you may be interested to study and the particular University’s requirements for admission. Check the particular University’s website that offers the courses you are interested in for more information – you can google the institution’s name and the words “alternative entry pathway”. Also check the UAC website – the sections on alternate entry pathways and pathway courses - http://www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/admission/index.shtml. Information about particular universities listed with UAC are available via the following link http://www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/institutions/.

Apprenticeship Information The Career Interest Explorer The Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service has launched a new resource that aims to help students and job seekers identify the strength of their career interests. The resource provides statements illustrating characteristics of seven broad work types. People respond to these based on their level of interest, resulting in a listing of the work types according to the relative strength of interest. From these outcomes, people can search for related information based on specific occupation ideas or industry-based career information available on the Australian Apprenticeships Pathways website. The resource will help people refine their thinking about their potential career pathways. It can also be part of their careers-related discussions with Australian Apprenticeships Centres and other service providers such as careers advisers in schools. The Career Interest Explorer is available on the Australian Apprenticeships Pathways website – www.aapathways.com.au/explorer.

Australian Apprenticeships – My Gain Videos The Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service has seen great success in the Australian Apprenticeships – My Gain YouTube channel. Since the first videos were published in December 2013 there have been over 40,000 views, with the majority coming from the ‘How do I find an Apprenticeship or Traineeship?’ playlist aimed at young people contemplating career pathways. Many of these videos are now showing on the first YouTube search results page when searching terms such as ‘Australian Apprenticeships’, ‘Australian Trainee’, ‘Apprentice Electrician’, ‘Apprentice Carpenter, ‘Business Administration Trainee’, and ‘Apprentice Hairdresser’ to name a few. One of the more popular videos is of Ryan, the Apprentice Electrician, with over 3,500 views since it was published in March 2013. The Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service will continue to grow the Australian Apprenticeships - My Gain channel, providing a valuable resource of information accessible to the public through the popular YouTube medium.

Occupational Videos A range of occupational videos about apprenticeships are available through the Australian Apprenticeships website. For more information visit (http://www.aapathways.com.au/Career-Resources/Occupational-Videos)

Unique Student Identifier (USI) Students who study nationally recognised training courses need to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). It is a reference number made up of letters and numbers. It is free to create a USI. It allows a student’s overall record of nationally recognised training courses that may have been obtained at a number of different training organisations to be kept in one place and accessed at any time. This will be helpful when applying for jobs as a person will be able to obtain a complete record of their vocational education and training achievements to show prospective employers. Students in Year 11 doing Hospitality which is a vocational and education training (VET) course have obtained their own USI. When students leave school if they embark on a VET courses and do not yet have a USI, they will need to obtain one. For more information, visit http://www.usi.gov.au/Pages/default.aspx#

Planning Workshop

The Faculty of the Built Environment runs a tailored workshop for high school students wanting to know more about and/or are interested in undertaking an undergraduate planning degree at the University of New South Wales (UNSW). In this workshop, senior planning students will introduce you to UNSW, the life of a planning student, the structure of the planning degree, and why it is a leader in its field. In addition to engaging with current planning students, you will get the chance to play town planner for a day and recreate a new vision for a city. In this activity you will be given a city that is facing a significant urban issue e.g. a natural disaster. Based on the scenario, your group will be given a set of guidelines for what the city needs and you will get to brainstorm and map out your ideas for the vision as creatively as you like. The activity will aim to encourage you to think about the issues in your city that you have not considered previously, and give you a taste of the challenges planners face in today’s world. It is set to be an informative afternoon that will open your eyes to what the Faculty of the Built Environment and the Bachelor of Planning have to offer you!
