Cardiovascular System Notes #3

Veins, Arteries and More

Page 2: Cardiovascular System Notes #3 Veins, Arteries and More

Systemic Circulation vs. Pulmonary Circulation

Systemic Circulation:

Systemic circulation supplies nourishment to all of the tissue located throughout your body, with the exception of the heart and lungs because they have their own systems.

Pulmonary Circulation:

Pulmonary circulation is the movement of blood from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart again.

Veins-blood vessels that bring blood back to heart from the lungs or body

• Walls of veins are not as strong as arteries

• Contain valves that prevent back flow of blood

• Muscular pump helps the veins “milk” the blood toward the heart

Varicose Veins

Spider Veins

The Five Major Veins

1. Internal Jugular Veins2. Superior Vena Cava3. Inferior Vena Cava4. Cephalic Vein5. Femoral Vein

Arteries: Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart

• Walls are usually much thicker than the walls of veins

• This is because they are very close to heart and the pumping causes enormous pressure that arteries must withstand

• No Valves

The Four Major Arteries:

1. Abdominal Aorta 2. Common Carotid

Artery3. Subclavian artery4. Femoral Artery

Capillaries

• Capillaries are the smallest of blood vessels. They serve to distribute oxygenated blood from arteries to the tissues of the body and to feed deoxygenated blood from the tissues back into the veins.

Blood Flow PostersIn groups of no more than 4, complete the following steps to create a life-size

poster of blood flow through the body:1. Outline a body on a piece of butcher paper.2. Draw the heart as anatomically correct as possible where it belongs in the

body.3. Label the four chambers and four main valves.4. Draw in the lungs and label them5. Use arrows to show how blood moves into and out of the heart and into

and out of the lungs back to the heart.6. Draw in the four major arteries on both sides of the body. Color the

arteries red and label them.7. Draw in the five major veins on both sides of the body. Color the veins blue

and label them.8. Using information from your notes, draw in the capillaries, color them

purple, and label them.9. Draw arrows showing the pathway of blood out of the heart, into the

body, and back to the heart.10. Label the systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation and explain the

difference between the two.
