Capuchin Franciscans 2017 Annual Fund

Since 1910, Capuchin Franciscan Friars have ministered throughout California in parishes, hospital and prison chaplaincies, in education and as campus ministers. Friars offer counsel and spiritual direction to those in need of comfort and support. They educate younger friars and accompany them as they journey through the stages of Capuchin life as brothers and priests.

Your gift to the 2017 ANNUAL FUND will directly assist our Capuchin ministries: to provide chaplaincy services in support of persons in spiritual need, to support retirement and nursing home care for our elder friars and health insurance coverage for all friars; to support operational expenses of our Province, and the needs of the Custody of Northern Mexico.

CAPUCHIN FRANCISCANSPrayer is the cornerstone of Capuchin Formation, drawing each friar into a closer relationship with his brothers in community.“Our Brother Francis followed a calling that changed his life and the world.

GENERAL STAGES OF CAPUCHIN FORMATION

STAGE 1: DISCERNMENT/CANDIDACY: At this stage, candidates who are interested in the Capuchin life are introduced to the friars. They visit the novitate and other Friaries. They also attend discern-ment retreats. Those who feel a call to Capuchin life are invited to apply for postulancy.

STAGE 2: POSTULANCY: This is the first stage of formation, usually about ten months in length, and takes place at the Capuchin friary in Berkeley. Postulants learn more about the Capuchin Franciscan Order by living and working with the friars, praying with the community and ministering to the poor. Postulants also participate in classes learning more about the faith, religious life, St. Francis and his Order. Postulants may also take classes at local colleges.

STAGE 3: NOVITIATE: At this stage, the postulants are clothed in the Capuchin Franciscan habit and begin a year of intense prayer and discernment at San Lorenzo Friary in Santa Ynez, California. For a year the novice is involved in study, fraternal life and a limited min-istry, all meant to help him decide if the Lord is calling him to make a commitment to God as a Capuchin friar. At the end of the year, the novices who are accepted profess their first vows as Capuchins and leave San Lorenzo to continue their formation.

STAGE 4: POST-NOVITIATE: For a period of at least three years the friars in temporary vows continue their formation in the San Francisco Bay Area, at St. Conrad Friary in Berkeley. Here they continue to deepen their understanding of Franciscan life and values. This time includes study, ministry, and a full life of communal and contemplative prayer. Part of this period of formation is spent in one of the friaries of California or Northern Mexico. At the end of this period of formation, those who feel called apply for final (solemn) vows, a lifetime commitment to serve the Lord as a Capuchin Franciscan friar.

PREPARATION FOR MINISTRY: Those friars who are called to the priesthood study philosophy and theology at the Dominican School, part of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Depending on the individual’s inclinations and abilities, as well as the needs of the Province, a friar in formation may do extra studies, learn a trade, or prepare himself in other ways to help them serve God’s people.

If you’ve ever listened to an economist try to explain how the stock market works, then you may have discovered the source of primeval chaos! One problem in trying to understand the origins of religious orders is the specialized “lingo” used to describe the orders. When Fr. Harold asked me to write about our life and spirituality for this newsletter, I realized that there are many terms familiar to us, but not so clear to everyone else. So, I thought I would begin with terms that are part of our world as Capuchin Franciscan Friars. Sometimes people ask us if we are monks and we explain that we are friars. Both monks and friars live a consecrated life within the Church, so what’s the difference? Generally, monks reside in a monastery and live somewhat isolated from the world. Friars, on the other hand, Continued,p.8

MISSIONARY TO VIETNAM Fr.HungNguyen,OFMCap.

In 1980, Fr. Hung Nguyen came to the United States from Vietnam. As a young person, he met the Capuchin Friars while looking at posters of religious orders in the back of his parish church in Costa Mesa in 1981. Fr. Hung writes: “Last May I spent

my two weeks’ vacation in Saigon, Vietnam where I was born and raised and where I served as a missionary four years earlier while helping Indonesian friars to establish our Capuchin presence in Vietnam. When I arrived in Vietnam, it seemed like a new territory to me. I came in May to say farewell to six young men on their way to Medan, Indonesia to begin their Novitiate. These are the young men who had gathered with us the previous year. Every week they came to our small house for prayer and dinner. It was a joyful time together! Continuedp.8.

Capuchins: Neither Monks Nor Monkeys cont’d are much more mobile, and live among people generally. The word “friar” comes from the Latin, “frater,” which means “brother.” This is how the friars want to be thought of, as brothers to both Jesus and all people. We are “Franciscan Friars” because our Order was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in 1209. St. Francis was called by God to live a radical gospel life of prayer and inspired many others to follow his example. One of the names people call St. Francis is “the Poverello,” which means the little poor man. The men who followed him in community were called by him the “Friars Minor,” which is often translated as “Lesser Brothers.” He wanted his friars to be humble servants of everyone they met.

Our community is the Order of Friars Minor, abbreviated OFM. We Capuchins write OFM Cap. after our names. That is the third part of our name, Capuchin Franciscans, that I would like to explain. St. Francis’ vision was so powerful that no one version of the Franciscan life is adequate.

In addition to orders of contemplative nuns such as the Poor Clares and other groups of Franciscan religious, sisters and brothers, as well as Secular (Lay) Franciscans, the Order of Friars Minor itself is comprised of several branches, based on reforms over the years. One of the reforms which began in the 16th century, around the time of the Reformation, was a group of friars who wore habits with a long, pointed hood, a cappuce. Soon they were known as the Cappuccini, or Capuchins. So you might say that the friars are a bunch of hoods!

But isn’t cappuccino a coffee drink? And what about those famous Capuchin monkeys? Well, both of those are named after the friars, not the other way around. The coffee drink is brown on the bottom with a foamy white head, which reminded some folks of the brown robed friars. And the monkeys, native to South America, have a little fold on the back of their necks which reminded the Spaniards of the hood worn by the same friars.

PicturedaboveareDuNguyen(nowanoviceintheCapuchinNovitiateinMedan,Indonesia)withFr.Hung. “The young people were surprised to see me show up the same old way on a motorbike. There are ten people living in the new rented house. The simplicity remains. Max and Norbert, the two Indonesian Friars are still there. The chapel is still very simple and barely fits the twenty people who attended the Mass. After Mass we had a simple dinner. The place was filled with joy, laughter and stories to share. “The next Monday I came to say farewell to the six young men…I am happy to see them move forward in their Capuchin vocation. They have been struggling, lacking many things, but their trust in God’s providence has brought them this far in their journey. Their Capuchin missionary experience in their homeland will now prepare them for their new experience in Indonesia. Whatever they experience in Indonesia will shape them in their vocations as Capuchin Franciscans in Vietnam. For we, whether in a familiar place or not, are called to let go of things, to serve, to offer our friendship as a gift, and to live a joyful life as Capuchins.” Picturedbelow:thefirstgroupofVietnamesegoingtoIndonesiafortheNovitiate, accompaniedbyIndonesianCapuchinpriests.

In Memoriam Fr. James Harrington, OFM Cap.

1944 - 2017

Fr. James Harrington died, September 5, 2017 in Dublin. He was seventy-four years old. Br. Joe Gallagher and some sisters were with Fr. James as he went to meet his Risen Lord face to face at 12:20 a.m.

Br. James was born in Cork City, Ireland in 1944. He joined the Capuchin Order in 1962. He was perpetually professed on October 4, 1966, from whence he went to continue his studies in the Friary of Ard Mhuire, Co. Donegal, and was ordained there by Bishop Anthony MacFeely on June 13, 1971. He served as a teacher in a vocational school in Dublin before going to the Vice Province in California, where he was appointed an associate pastor in three parishes in Roseburg and Bend, Oregon and Burlingame, Ca. He also served as chaplain in Fresno, Ca. Br. James returned to Ireland in 1995, where he was engaged in ministry as hospital chaplain and parish priest in the Dublin area. Br. James was renowned for his kindness, hospitality and his love of a good story. His “Jokes” page was the most read page in the Provincial Bulletin. He was our Br. Juniper and what St. Francis said of his Br. Juniper: “Would to God, my brothers, that I had a whole forest of such Junipers,” could be said of our James as well. Thank you, James for your sense of fun, laughter and innocent merriment, your memory will always bring a smile to our hearts. Fr. James Harrington was buried in Ireland on Friday, September 8, 2017. A Requiem Mass was celebrated at Our Lady of Angels Church on October 6, 2017, at 7:00 p.m. Rest in God’s Peace,Fr. James!

The Feast of St. Francis Reminds us of Reverence for God’s Creation

Fr. Mike Ronayne writes from Yécora, Mexico: In the Sierra, God’s breathtaking handiwork surrounds us. Unfortunately, several factors work against it: Violence, organized crime, over-emphasis on the virtual world, the development of strip mining in our area are examples. As a result, many students show little interest in creation. To awaken students’ interest, David Beaumont, OFM Cap., local professors and international scientists have developed a special kit. Students receive an oversize folder with a large drawing of a Black Bear (bears still inhabit the Sierra). Inside, large sheets of construction paper contain photos

of the amazing creatures of the Sierra. Next to each photo, taken by Fr. David and the local scientists, are spaces where students note where and when they have seen the animals and what variations in color etc. that they have observed. Information gleaned from the kits helps local

scientists discover new wonders in the Sierra. The kits are printed in Spanish and Pima, helping to preserve students’ cultural heritage. Without the prayers and generosity of our friends in the North, these precious kits would not be available to our youth. May the Gracious Lord of Creation richly bless you!

Fr. Joseph Seraphin Dederick: Journey from Mexico to St. Lawrence,Watts

May the Lord give you his peace! My name is Br. Joseph Seraphin Dederick OFM Cap. Six months after my priestly ordination in March of 2009, I arrived in Ciudad Durango, Mexico to help out in our Custody of San Juan Diego. The brothers sent me to what was then our newest friary to serve both as the vice postulant director and to help out in the local parish. Much of that first year was spent in painting walls and sealing the cement floors in each friar’s room. It needed work to be suitable for the friars. My ability to speak Spanish slowly improved while I administered the Sacraments in a different culture and gave classes to the brothers in formation.

After ten months I was sent to a small village of 120 people in the mountains of Chihuahua to work with the novitiate staff and to help out in the local parish. I lived in San Fidel friary for the next six years eventually being in charge of the novices’ formation. I loved the outdoors where we lived. Each night we were able to

marvel at the Milky Way silently looking back at us. The local people were mostly farmers with little formal education. The brothers learned about the Capuchin Order, its history and spirituality while preparing to profess the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. Finishing up my seven years of experiences and personal growth there in Mexico, God called me back to the home province in July 2017.

After six years living in a rural pueblo of 120 people, I arrived at Saint Lawrence of Brindisi: our busy parish with roughly 10,000 parishioners and a grade school of 300 students in Watts, south central Los Angeles. I am associate pastor here.

The change from six years in Mexico has been night and day. After living in silence with the sounds of wind, distant tractors tilling the fields, coyotes, roosters, sheep and just a few people – from ten to eighty people at the Sunday masses in the pueblos

where we ministered, now I live with the sound of airplanes arriving overhead for the Lax airport, police and firetruck sirens blaring several times during the day and the night, helicopters, LA traffic with 500 people attending each of the Sunday

masses. The people of Saint Lawrence have been very patient with me in this transition. Here at St. Lawrence, I have learned a new language skill: switching back and forth all day long between Spanish and English. Here in the inner city many families struggle with low incomes, drug use

both in the family and in the neighborhood, complicated familial issues, family members in jail, and some people afraid of living here without documentation. These experiences have enriched my vocation. Here in Watts the harvest is great but the laborers are few. I ask for your prayers as I continue to respond to my vocation as a Capuchin Friar Minor.

“I also have the opportunity to look at

how human trafficking is being conducted on the ‘dark web’…part of my work focuses on how to disrupt these cells in

order to free victims of these heinous networks.”

Br. Charles McElroy, OFM, Cap: Protecting the Vulnerable through Cyber-Security

As a lay brother in the Capuchin Order, it is my goal to follow the rich legacy

of St Francis who sought to serve the most vulnerable members of the community. The act of embracing the leper and serving the larger leper community in Assisi was a profound turning point in his life. I experienced a similar moment while teaching in the seminary. At the time, the Vatican sent out a mandatum (Latin for mandate) to all Social Justice Instructors teaching in Catholic Seminaries. In essence, the Vatican sent out a call for subject matter specialists who were willing to pursue doctoral training focused on a variety of issues of particular interest to the Congregation for Justice and Peace. Two of the topics that I became interested in were environmental science (sustainability, climate change, etc.) and terrorism. As a result of trying to honor the Vatican mandatum, I pursued a PhD program in Information Systems at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Here I was immersed in an interdisciplinary environment where I studied doctoral level statistics, organizational dynamics and a host of emerging fields such as machine learning principles, agent based modeling, etc. For my thesis, I applied these tools to complex issues in the Environmental Sciences that confront climate change researchers. At the conclusion of my doctoral training, I faced a new period of discernment: How should I dedicate these new skillsets? What concrete problems in the larger world should I focus on to embody the Lord’s will to serve the most vulnerable members of the community as St Francis did? Fortunately, a new opportunity arose in which I thought I could integrate my Capuchin vocation with this training. Specifically, the US Intelligence Community (IC) sponsored a national competition for newly minted professors to apply their research to solve

seemingly intractable problems. The rules of the contest were as simple as they were competitive. If you provided the IC with a proposal that looked like it might be successful, then the Federal Government would be willing to fund the first two years of your research at the university of your choosing. The problem that I pursued was in Data Science. Specifically, my research goal was to identify, assess and mitigate sources of bias in big data research. This has implications for a wide variety of fields. It poses dire problems in medicine, cyber-security and engineering, to name but a few. Ultimately, I was fortunate enough to win this competition and to receive a fellowship to conduct my research at the California Institute of Technology – Center for Data Driven Discovery.

As part of this work on cyber-security, I also have the opportunity to look at how human trafficking is being conducted on the “dark web.” Part of my work focuses on how to disrupt these cells in order to free the victims of these heinous networks. Fraternally, I feel very fortunate to live at St Francis High School with other friars while I conduct my research in Pasadena. Recently, I had the opportunity to

confer with Cardinal Peter Turkson who is the head of the Vatican Congregation for Justice and Peace. He has been very gracious in inviting me to work directly with his Office on addressing these problems. Indeed, we are currently discussing how I might be part of the team that briefs Pope Francis himself on these issues on a monthly basis. While I would never have guessed that I might be doing something like this when I first entered the Order, I did know that by pursuing the Lord’s will, that is, by following in the footsteps of St Francis, I would ultimately find my place in serving people of God. On most days I can’t wait to get to work!

[Br. Charles is a member of the Province of St. Augustine, Pennsylvania.]
