Community Mapping

“Community Mapping (sometimes called asset mapping) is all about involving residents in identifying the assets of their neighbourhood, looking at opportunities and

creating a picture of what it is like to live there”

Opportunity for community members to expand their local knowledge & strengthen their sense of community

Age Advantage Association – Organization background

Funded by the federal & provincial governments committed to the preservation, promotion and presentation of rich local heritage Successfully created a web-based community mapping project in 2013

Association's Mandate: Support & promote volunteerism and sharing among members of communities in

Annapolis County Build confidence in community members with basic computer skills Introduce the concept of community mapping to senior members & value their

contribution to mapping Collaborate with Nova Scotia Community College instructors & students Technology increases opportunities for sharing information to expand knowledge Explore the potential commercialization of heritage, culture & recreational products

Purpose of the Project

Offer online mapping support, resources, skills and teaching to the group in hopes of achieving their ultimate goal of producing a Heritage Trail Map – website

The Age Advantage Community Project is about intergenerational learning that allows for passionate community members to work with students to develop GIS skills

Facilitate transition of data platforms & the continuation of Prototype Website

Project Objectives

ArcGIS Online will be used to share, examine and analyze geographic data pertaining to Annapolis County.

What Is a Shortlist Application? A type of Story Map that can organize points of interest in a fun & colourful

way Web template each tab defines a point layer & allows navigation of tabs to

find information Placed on a free web hosting server to share with group members & the

• The CSV files will populate the Pop-Up Window & dictate the style of the Pop-Up

Objective 4 – Configuration

Redefine developed web application prototypes based on feedback from group consultation Involved configuration of the following:

Attribute information (i.e. pop-up window) Web design & layout (colour) Symbology

Importance of Community Mapping

Improve Public Involvement Allow community members the opportunity to design & plan

Enhance knowledge Empower citizens Reflect resident's pride of place and identity

Continuous learning Help individuals advance with technology

Promote &/or protect the provision of services

Conclusion

As the name suggests “community mapping” enables communities to map details of where they live and the surrounding infrastructure –this is what the project reached & continue to do in its future endavours Present information on a easily accessible, visually appealing manner to be shared with

others Build accurate knowledge of what community actually looks like presently

and historically in a way that keeps information within the community Creates a stronger position to represent themselves with NGOs, local and provincial

government as well as build capacity within the community The platform of community mapping ensures all individuals no matter the

age are exposed to active learning all the while exploring their cultural rootsAnnapolis County is a place of rich heritage and amenities that must be

shared with the community and beyond
