IOP Institute of Physics

27-30th June 2017

What is CAPS?CAPS is the largest annual conference for Undergraduate Physicists on a national scale.

Starting out as a 40 Physics-student gathering at Heriot Watt University in 2008, CAPS has bloomed to 200+ students in 2015. Over 200 keen young physicists across the UK will gather at UCL in London for CAPS 2017.

This creates an unique opportunity for employers and industry representatives to interact with numerous students. This year’s CAPS will gather speakers from various fields to reach out and encourage students to broaden their horizons and expand the scope of their career options.

Aims of the Conference

Students at the University of GlasgowCAPS 2016

Create a network of young physicists

Provide a platform for top researchers to share their cutting-edge research

Oer physicists a variety of career options, and show them that their degree opens countless doors

3 reasons to invest in CAPS:You just gotta love Physicists!

Angela Merkel, Brian May, Dara O’Brien, Elon Musk, Sally Ride - what do all these successful people have in common?

They all studied Physics!

Physicists have an extremely broad skillset, and are ideally placed to spearhead innovations. Their analytical and creative skills, allow physicists to think outside the box in any industry. This means they generate unique ecacious solutions to any problem. CAPS is the largest gathering of high-achieving, ambitious, young physi-cists in the country. It is the ultimate opportunity to capture their attention.

Physics is a competitive degree (UCL: 8 applications per place).

According to the IOP, while the average graduate starting salary in the UK is UK£19,700, those with a BSc in Physics earn 14% more, and this increases to 18% more for those with a Master of Physics (MPhys).

This is the year of LONDON!

This year’s CAPS is hosted in the undisputed science capital of Europe - London!

Due to it being a centre of productivity, London is the most easily accessible location in the country. This provides a grand networking platform for an overwhelming number of participants. The capital of the UK is home to globally renowned universi-ties such as UCL, KCL, and Imperial, all are within a 3 miles’ radius of one another.

London is truly an international titan on the science scene, which makes CAPS 2017 the perfect investment opportunity!

CAPS particularly attracts leaders of physics societies by hosting a forum exclusively for them before the conference.

London oers Europe’s best and most diverse workforce. Among more than 4m workers you’ll find 230 languages, 400,000 creatives.

Research & Innovation!

Тhe computer, the fridge, GPS, X-ray scans, and electricity. What do these all have in common? They’re all products of Physics research…

Research drives tech innovations and improves quality of life. Investment in research provides the bedrock on which these creative ideas can flourish.

CAPS allows undergraduates to meet an eclectic array of their peers, and for the first time in their careers, start building a network of fellow bright physicists. This provides any sponsor with the opportunity to help shape the research that could most benefit their field.

Estimates of the impact of Research Council spending on the UK’s national output suggest that a cut of £1 billion in annual spending would lead to a fall in GDP of £10 billion (Haskel and Wallis, 2010).

The current high quality of UK research makes the country attractive for inward investment by international business and industry through collaborations and siting oces. (“Research for our Future” - Romesh Vaitilingam)

UCL is ranked seventh in the world’s top 10 universities by the QS World University Rankings (2015)

UCL is the top-rated university in the UK for research strength (Research Excellence Framework 2014)

“London thrives by being open, to talent, to ideas and to people.” - Sadiq Khan
