Ensure students have learnt movement facing the front. Find a partner and perform as a mirroring exercise. Start with the Jenga first as this is the transition step and can be used to fuse any Capoeira movements together.
Watch intro video – questions you may want to ask students:
What do you think the dance is about?Where does it originate/come from? What movements did you enjoy watching?
• Travel around the space give instructions to pupils as you go introducing them to techniques from Capoeira. For Example shout 1. Jump, 2. Turn, 3. Find a partner perform a counterbalance/still image showing teamwork.
• Stand in a circle pass different stretches around the circle, teacher lead, or ask students to pass their own stretches around the space. Give them a time limit – 20 seconds to get round the whole circle.
All students –Perform two/three motifs with partner in unison mirroring.
Most students - Perform three motifs with partner mirroring partner adding a starting position of their choice and an ending position – showing team work
Some students – Perform three motifs with partner, adding their own transition steps adding a start and ending position.
Students perform back in smaller groups and give constructive feedback
Optional questions: Do they remember the names of the motifs? Why is teamwork important in Capoeira?
Cool down activity if needed: Stand in a circle perform simple held stretches or activity pass the squeeze around the circle with eyes closed holding hands
Advice - always teach the students the motifs at the front of the class before asking students to go away and practice. You may want to add in the Jenga step from week one.
Watch intro video – questions you may want to ask students:
Any recap comments about week one?Any vocabulary they remember?
• Travel around the space – development add more numbers to week one. For example: 4. Touch the floor, 5. 4 x star jumps add or discard numbers as required.
• Opposite game – give the group a series of instructions and they do the opposite. For example – run to the right, run to the left, hand on your head, hands on your toes, freeze, move as fast as you can.
All students – perform two/three motifs with partner in unison mirroring
Most students – perform three motifs with partner mirroring adding for example a held balance at the beginning, or a special handshake or bow at the end.
Some students – all of the above and incorporate a motif from week one.
Students perform back in smaller groups and give constructive feedback
Optional questions: What was the star move? Did you create a handshake or bow?
Cool down activity if required: Stand in a circle simple held stretches or activity sitting down teacher draws one number on persons back with eyes closed the number goes around the circle (same concept as Chinese whispers)

Now the students have the basic motifs, this lesson is about creating a phrase of movement, fusing motifs together.
Watch intro video – questions you may want to ask students:
What has been your favourite motif you have learnt? Can you remember the names of the motifs?
• Travel around the space, see if the group are working as a collective. See if they can stop and start as a group, and sit down as a group, and clap as a group. You may also want to add other commands like green, amber, red
• Relay Races - you could get the group to do simple runs, or cartwheels, turns, jumps etc.
All students – create a phrase combining their chosen motifs 4/5 motifs, with some repetition.
Most – Be able to perform a variation of the key motifs from the resource
Some – Perform with confidence a phrase of movement with transitions and creativity where applicable.
As an option Capoeira is normally performed in a circle formation ‘Roda.’ You may want to introduce students to this concept and give each group a number and when one group finishes next goes in.
Activity if required: Wax works – all students freeze in the space, in Capoeira movements. Teacher walks around when teacher isn’t looking students can move, if they are caught they are out.
Advice - always teach the students the motifs at the front of the class before asking students to go away and practice. You may want to add in the Jenga step from week one.
• You may want to ask older key stage groups to lead aspects of the warm up using flash cards with movements on
• Circuit style warm up – different station varying activities
You may want to ask the students to create their own phrase together based on the following ideas of motif development:
• Unison, Canon, Retrograde – backwards, Mirror, Change the level – High/Medium/Low, Spacing
Capoeira has lots of rhythms and chants you may want to ask the group to create a phrase incorporating body rhythms and percussions (an excellent tool to develop rhythm and co-ordination)
• Stamps, Claps, Use of body, Use of floor , Incorporate a drum if required
Ask the group about performance skills, at this point they should be confident enough to think about, focus, projection, musicality, spatial awareness.
