PRESIDENT’S LETTER

WORD FROM CAPE RUGBY TV

I would like to send my condolences this week to Paarl Rangers RFC, with the passing of their long-time President, Mr Joey Kulsen. Joey was a real stalwart in his club and the entire

community. My sympathies to the entire Kulsen family during this sad time.

The past week we were joined on the show by the coach of the Western Province Emerging Squad, Lionel Langenhoven. Lionel has just returned from a trip with the up and coming

stars of Western Province Club Rugby.

@jpnaude

The President’s Cup began last weekend with the Top 8 competition between teams in Super League A, B and C.

The Top 6 knockout competition will take place at City Park on Saturday. It promises to be a feast of rugby for those in attendance, so I would encourage you all to get down there.

As the Top 9 Champions League reaches its conclusion, clubs will be sweating on results to go their way in order to secure promotion to Super League C.

The new league format has ensured that there is something to play for in every game, across the length and breadth of the province. This has added a level of intensity that has made club rugby all the more exciting this season and it has been a joy to watch.

Best of luck to all clubs competing this weekend.

Thelo WakefieldWPRFU PRESIDENT

They had some great results which included beating a few teams with star-studded players.

One of my fondest memories of the show was Lionel’s story of the boys visit to Jeffrey’s’ Bay where upon passing a few schools the locals spotted the blue and white hoops. Lionel’s version is of kids running out of class and jumping through windows to see their heroes.

I thought this was fantastic, can you imagine the passion being shared by both players and fans? The sad part is that not everyone will hear this story.

This is what we’ve been working on, restoring the pride of Western Province Club Rugby.

It’s about players who want to play for the jersey, coach, and their teammates - not only in the hoops, but across the broader ranks of Western Province Club Rugby.

Keep watching, keep reading, if you don’t feel the passion yet, you will feel it soon.

Have a fantastic rugby weekend,

JP Naude

MATCH DETAILS

8 CAPE RUGBY MAGAZINE / Issue 18

In what was a typical derby day atmosphere in Langa, Blue Jets secured a tight victory over their rivals to keep their hopes of a place in Super League C alive.

It was a tight and tense affair as neither side was willing to give an inch. Some basic handling errors kept the scores tight at the break.

Blue Jets became complacent during the second half and lost ascendancy, and were lucky that Young Ideas failed to capitalise due to more unforced errors.

In the end, Blue Jets were the more clinical side on the day as they took the derby spoils. The win could see the Khayelistha club secure promotion.

Blue Jets secured a much-needed victory over Young Ideas.

We’re disappointed with this result as we worked very hard during the week to prepare for this one.

We’ll have to go back to the drawing board and work on our basics in order to improve.

MASIBONGE ZOKIYOUNG IDEAS CAPTAIN

We played well, but we missed our opportunities. Blue Jets made it hard for us today. The performances this season

have been great and we remain very ambitious to make it to Super League C

next season.

It was a classic game of two halves. We let the game slip in the second half. I

thought our forwards played very well. Thanks to the

Super League C.

We’re very happy with the win. We lost momentum in the

Division: Top 6 KnockoutsMatch: Hamiltons v VictoriansVenue: City ParkThe President’s Cup kicks off this weekend as teams that finished in the positions between third and sixth in Super Leagues A, B, and C face off in a Super Rugby-styled knockout tournament. The quarter-finals take place this weekend at City Park. In the Super League A tournament, Hamiltons take on Victorians in a repeat of their titanic battle in the league phase. Hamiltons impressed this season, and will look to add another piece of silverware to their collection.

Division: Top 8 TournamentMatch: Belhar v UWCVenue: BrooksideBelhar face UWC in the second round of the Top 8 competition. Both teams enjoyed resounding wins over the weekend and will look to keep that momentum going into this clash. Both sides are able to call on their Western Province Amateur players, so this will likely be a star-studded affair.

Division: Top 9 Champions LeagueMatch: Blue Jets v Caledonian RosesVenue: Khayelitsha StadiumBlue Jets go into this one knowing they can ill afford to slip up in the race for promotion to Super League C. They have Lagunya breathing down their necks and they face a Caledonian’s side still hurting from their derby day defeat to Young Stars. It’s all to play for in this one.

Division: City League Top 8Match: Busy Bees v Temperance/CitiesVenue: Langa StadiumBoth sides go into this one in similar positions on the log. Temperance have made a great start to the new competition and will look to keep up that momentum. They are unbeaten after four games and look a real threat. Busy Bees will be a tough nut to crack as their form at the Langa Stadium has been outstanding throughout the season.

Division: Northern League Top 8Match: Khayelitsha v Whistling WheelsVenue: Khayelitsha StadiumWhistling Wheels have been the form team in the competition so far and have lost just one of their opening six games. They travel to Khayelitsha knowing a victory here will all but secure them the title. Khayelitsha are unbeaten so far and will look to keep pace with the log leaders.

Division: Southern League Top 8Match: Rocklands v TitansVenue: Rocklands Sports ComplexTitans have made a great start to the competition and are unbeaten after five games. They will look to put some distance between them and Rocklands when the two meet this weekend. Titans will look to keep pace with Retreat at the top of the table.

Division: Simonsberg RegionMatch: Blue Stars v ExcelsiorVenue: Blue StarsExcelsior needs a victory to keep pace at the top of the Simonsberg League. Blue Stars will be a tough proposition at home and will have a point to prove against one of the top sides in the Simonsberg Region.

In Cheslin Roberts, Belhar have a highly lethal and dangerous back. The 24-year-old boasts impressive experience too as he has already played Varsity Shield with UWC, as well as Vodacom Cup with Boland.

Now in his third season at Belhar, Roberts is helping the club maintain their position as a Super League A stalwart.

“We’ve improved a lot this season and there’s a great vibe at the club,” Roberts tells Cape Rugby TV. “It’s like a family here as most of the guys are from the local areas.”

Roberts joined up with the team in the middle of the season after his stint with Boland. His good form earned him a call-up to the Western Province emerging squad.

“That was a good experience,” says Roberts. “Winning the tournament in Humansdorp was a great achievement as it showed how strong club rugby in this region is.”

Roberts hopes he can continue playing provincial rugby in future. “Playing Vodacom Cup for DHL Western Province would be a dream for me.”

CHESLIN ROBERTSBELHAR

False Bay versatile front-rower Gerard Lotter is one of the few club rugby players who are active members of their respective national teams. Lotter is a Namibian Test player, who captained his country at U20 level.

“It was amazing to be called up to the senior team,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “We’re now trying to build for next year’s World Cup as our first game is against the All Blacks!”

Lotter is a strong ball carrier and does most of his work at ruck-time. His form this season saw him selected for the Western Province Emerging squad. He’s no stranger to the provincial set-up, having previously played at U19 level. It’s clear that False Bay have a real prospect on their hands.

“False Bay enjoyed a good season so far,” says Lotter. “The club is happy where they’re at and we’ll continue to improve.”

False Bay finished fifth in the regular Super League A campaign and will now compete in the President’s Cup.

“We’ll definitely try and win it,” says Lotter. “It’s about building for next season and proving our worth.”

Willie Gordon has been a club rugby stalwart for the last 15 years. Having cut his teeth at Hands and Hearts, he joined Young Stars at the beginning of the season, immediately becoming club captain in the process.

“I was at a stage in my career where I was looking for a new challenge,” Gordon tells Cape Rugby TV. “We’ve had an excellent season, so I don’t have any complaints.”

Young Stars are currently unbeaten in the Top 9 Champions League competition and are well on their way to securing a promotion to Super League C next season.

Gordon is most effective in the tight-loose and has proven to be a great link man between the forwards and backs.

His experience has helped guide the younger talents at the club. Flanker Iron Smith has enjoyed a superb season and has been able to count on Gordon’s advice and guidance.

“This a family club and we all help out where we can,” says Gordon. “Iron is a standout talent so it’s up to the older heads at the club to help him flourish.”

Franschoek United’s come-from-behind title win was one of the success stories of Super League C. Young outside back Justin Morgan played his part with some scintillating performances.

“I’m still a little lost for words to be honest,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “To win the title was one thing, but to come back like that against the odds makes it extra special.

“We worked hard all season and we always maintained the belief that we could win the league.”

Morgan is a tricky back with pace to burn. He has weighed in with several important tries this season.

He is quick to acknowledge the role that the club’s supporters played in their success. “The support throughout the season has been great. Our fans give us the power.”

Franschoek will now compete in the President’s Cup, something that Morgan and the entire community are looking forward to.

“Everybody is speaking about this competition,” he says. “We want to win it. The chance to play at DHL Newlands would be the icing on the cake.”

FIGHTING SPIRITCloetesville are going back to their roots.

For many fans, Blakes RFC is a big part of club rugby in the Western Province region. Springbok Wing JP Pietersen plied his trade there, as did former Lions and Griquas wing

Dusty Noble. “We changed our name to Cloetesville in 2007, when we incorporated the surrounding areas in Stellenbosch,” club patron Christie Noble tells Cape Rugby TV. “Blakes RFC is still a huge part of the community and we’re incredibly proud to have built on such a fantastic legacy.”

With their season coming to a close, Cloetesville have begun preparations for next season.

“We have big plans for 2015,” Noble says. “We have a young squad and having experienced this new format, we can now build on that young talent.

“Our executive committee will be coming together to identify the areas that need strengthening,” he

adds. “We struggled a lot with injuries and have had to select players out of position. Now more than ever, squad depth is very important.”

The club did very well in the Northern League, finishing second overall.

“We had a good season,” says Noble. “We’ve seen our old supporters from Blakes return and they’re 100% behind the club. There’s a feel-good atmosphere around again.”

Cloetesville are also involved with the TAG Rugby initiative and have found success in these tournaments.

“We want to get the kids from the community involved in the sport,” says Noble. “Our Tag Rugby teams have done very well and just won their second consecutive title, which is very encouraging.”

GREAT POTENTIALBrackenfell are a young and diverse club on the rise.

Brackenfell have long been recognised as one of the more traditional rugby clubs currently active. Their young, energetic committee is changing that perspective.

“We run a tight ship here at Brackenfell,” club president Danie Scholtz tells Cape Rugby TV. “We have a very young executive committee of six people and we are one of the only clubs with a female vice-president in Carla Nortje.

“Brackenfell is one of the fastest-growing areas in the Western Cape,” he adds. “Brackenfell High is one of the largest in the province, so they are a great feeder school for our club.”

Brackenfell have done wonders in creating a diverse playing environment and has become a community club in the truest sense.

“We have big support and there’s a communal atmosphere at the club, especially on match days,”

says Scholtz. “We also have an annual family day, which has become a tradition at the club. We have local musicians performing, as well as over 400 Rugga Kids playing in the curtain raisers for our 1st XV.”

Coach Johan Kotze echoes this sentiment.

“There is a real sense of diversity at the club,” says Kotze. “We have a good mix of youth and experience and we have some talented youngsters coming through.”

Brackenfell finished sixth on the log in Super League B and are now getting ready for the President’s Cup.

“It was a tough season as Super League B was very competitive this year,” adds Kotze. “The President’s Cup is very exciting as most of us have never experienced knock-out rugby. We’ll be giving it 100%, that’s for sure.”

“I was a little nervous being one of the younger players in the team,” Farmer tells Cape Rugby TV. “It was great to play at that level and it was definitely a learning curve for me.

“There is some tough competition at hooker, so I know I can’t become complacent.”

At school level, Farmer has excelled this season and his hard-running and energetic displays have really made an impact for Tygerberg.

“I think we’ve had a good season,” says Farmer. “We only lost a couple games and our performance levels were of a high standard.”

Farmer hopes to make the SA Schools Squad next year, and aims to continue his career at the Western Province Institute after matric.

“It’s definitely a goal of mine,” he says. “I know that if I work hard enough, I’ll have a good chance of making it.

“The Western Province Academy has been effective in developing young talent. We spent a week at the institute, which was a great experience.”

In addition to this, the club organises sports days for the juniors, which have become a highlight of the season.

“Our boys just want to play,” says Esau. “Rugby is very popular in the Paarl region and our youth set-up is definitely growing. It’s great to get the parents involved in these initiatives.”

The club is helped by several junior and primary schools in the area. In particular, New Orleans Secondary is one of the club’s biggest feeder schools.

The Paarl region is a hotbed for young rugby talent. Almost all of the clubs have youth teams and are doing their best to nurture these players.

Riverstones is one such club and is proud to provide their younger players with a platform to succeed. The club currently has four junior teams ranging from U11 to U17.

“Our first priority is our junior teams,” head of junior rugby Jessica Esau tells Cape Rugby TV. “We try and get the kids ready for a life outside of rugby, but at the same time, we just want them to enjoy the game.

“We have good facilities at Daljosafat, as well as several top youth coaches. Players from our senior sides will help out with the coaching when they can.”

INSPIRING THE YOUTH Riverstones are providing an outlet for the youngsters in the Paarl region.

Which clubs have you represented?I’m currently registered to Maties and have played a couple Super League A games for them in the past.

Do you ever take the time to watch club rugby?I try and watch Maties as often as possible. I recently watched Victorians face UCT, which was a great game.

What do you think about the level of competitiveness in Super League A this year? From the games I’ve watched, I think the standard of Western Province club rugby has really increased. It’s tough physically and is a great way to measure yourself against impressive talent week in and week out.

How has club rugby benefitted your development?I learned a lot at Maties, especially when I got the opportunity to play against older players. Maties have a great set-up with fantastic coaches, so learning from them was great for my development. Playing Super League A proved to be a big stepping stone in my career.

Would you ever consider playing club rugby in the future?Definitely. It’s an ideal way to build up strength and match fitness and the competition is fierce.

Do you have any advice for club rugby players out there? My advice would be to work hard and believe in yourself and your abilities. When the opportunity comes, and it will, make sure to take it with both hands.

Ampie Vorster is a young referee with a bright future. It’s not very often you have an official in his early 20s with over a decade’s worth of experience.

“I’ve been refereeing since I was 13,” he tells Cape Rugby TV. “My dad was a ref, so I would run the lines as an assistant.

“Marius Jonker was the touch judge in the very first game I refereed and he has been a big influence in my career.”

Vorster played rugby for Tuks before making the move to refereeing.

“I decided I was too small to make a career out of rugby,” says Vorster. “I’ve always enjoyed refereeing so I decided to pursue it.”

Ampie Vorster hopes to become a successful and respected referee.

BEHIND THE WHISTLE

WOMEN’S PROFILE

Currently a Division 2 referee, Vorster was thrown into the deep end during a Super League A game between UCT and Belhar after a fellow official got injured.

“That was a great moment for me,” says Vorster. “Unfortunately, Quinton Immelman got injured during the game so I ended up officiating. It was my favourite game of the season.”

Vorster has big plans to make a career out of refereeing.

“I want to referee in sevens first,” he says. “I have the speed and fitness to cope with the intensity of that style of rugby. From there, I want to work my way through the ranks.”

Mymoena Gamiet is an athlete of real potential. She represents South Africa in water polo and has already made the DHL Western Province women’s squad, despite only starting the game three years ago.

“Getting the call-up was one of the best days of my life,” Gamiet tells Cape Rugby TV. “I’m always looking for opportunities to excel.”

Gamiet, a psychology student at UWC, is enjoying her time at the club. “The playing pool is very diverse here,” she says. “It’s an integrated environment.”

The UWC ladies have had an inconsistent season so far, but are a match for anyone on their day. “We give teams a tough time,” Gamiet adds.

By her own admission, Gamiet has an unusual style of play for a lock. “I’m faster than most of the forwards, so I spend a lot of the game in the backline,” she says. “I’m a lock who plays like a loose forward. I’m improving all the time; getting stronger and developing my skills.”

COACH’S CORNER

Tell us about your background.I coached the U20 sides at UCT for 12 years. I spent five years with the U20 A side, winning two Varsity Cup titles in the process. At the start of this year, I decided that I wanted a new challenge and I joined Villager as their 1st XV coach.

What attracted you to Villager? The club needed direction and I saw a great opportunity to remain involved in the game. There’s a nice vibe at the club and it’s been good to enjoy the game with my mates.

How has the first season gone? It’s been great. I initially had a three-year plan to earn Super League A promotion, so do it in my first year was amazing. We’ve got the right people at the club, who have helped with players’ development. Many of our coaches are teachers, so they’ve instilled good values into our players, preparing them for life outside of rugby and giving them direction.

How did the switch to amateur status affect the club? It’s had a positive effect, to be honest. The guys are here because they want to be. We’ve had to have realistic expectations of our players and had to be a little lenient, but it’s clear that the club is moving in the right direction. There was a low morale when I joined, but winning game after game has saw our momentum snowball. Everyone at the club has bought into the new club mission.

Do you have a coaching philosophy?I’ve tried to enjoy the game a lot more. Being at UCT for so long, I’ve

always appreciated the expansive game, but at Villager, I’ve had to change it to complement my players. We play a forward-based game.

What are your goals for the rest of the season? We’re now in the President’s Cup, so we’ll try to end the season with a double. It’s also a great opportunity to give the younger guys a chance and start building for next season. We’re ready for Super League A, in terms of numbers, but now we’ll look to add some more quality.
