SPEND LESS ON YOUR STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM

Dates, prices, inclusions, and areas of study and courses are subject to change. For the most current information, including details and restrictions, visit capa.org or call 800.793.0334.

Global Seminars are an ideal option for students looking for a short-term summer study abroad program with high impact. Each Seminar has an intensive focus on a global trend or event in one of CAPA’s Global Cities locations. As a Seminar participant, you will engage in special events and field studies that happen outside the classroom and take you into the city.

Seminars are offered in Buenos Aires, Dublin, London, Shanghai, and Sydney and provide students with the opportunity to earn 3 to 4 credits in just over three weeks.

Global Seminars are related to specific topics and serve specific majors, but they are suitable for students from a variety of backgrounds. There are no pre-requisites.

Through a comparison between the public health systems of Argentina and the United States, the Seminar will cover key issues related to public health including a consideration of each system’s objectives and organization, questions of universal health care, and inequalities in access of care. You will gain a broad perspective on the variety of health care systems that exist globally, with particular focus on public health services and issues of primary and secondary care and mental health care.

In this Seminar, course-specific field studies include visits to public and private hospitals and health institutions where you will observe public health activities and meet with health professionals.

As a response to the catastrophic events of the first decades of the twentieth century, in 1948 the United Nations issued the Declaration of Human Rights, asserting that there is a moral code to human behavior that supersedes nation, culture, religion, or political practice. A person’s right to live governed by this code of behavior must be granted universally without qualification.

In this Seminar, you will analyze and explore issues relating to human rights from global, regional, and local perspectives. You will study international human rights violations and possible remedies in a variety of contexts, examining the history, development, and structure of human rights protection. You will also examine human rights in action through Irish case studies and with opportunities to learn directly about the work of organizations such as the Irish Innocence Project and the Cities in Transition Project.

Course-specific field studies include an overnight excursion to Belfast and Londonderry/Derry in Northern Ireland.

In this Seminar, you will become an active explorer of London, observing its spaces and learning to reflect, interpret, and translate your observations through writing.

Because the act of writing involves structured engagement and reflection, you will focus on the act of converting your observations and reflections into narrative and analysis. Your writing will be an expression of your unique learning experience and reveal the multiple realities encountered in the urban spaces of London, moving beyond simplicity and stereotype.

Course-specific field studies include exploring the landscape of JM Barrie’s Peter Pan and touring the East End.

Shanghai is one of China’s economic powerhouses. Like other growing mega cities, Shanghai has experienced both transformative growth in its economy, technologies, society and culture as well as enormous challenges in transportation, immigration, urban planning, and cultural preservation. Perhaps its greatest challenge has been how to address the serious environmental issues raised by its rapid expansion.

In this Seminar, you will examine the fast changing landscape of Shanghai and its impact on community, services and culture. Course-specific field studies include exploring the architecture of the Old French Concession and visiting Tianzifang, Shanghai’s SoHo.

In the case of the indigenous Australian peoples, music was, in the absence of a written language, the method by which tradition and knowledge passed from generation to generation. This music continues to be embedded in Aboriginal life in a way that is distinct from the Western tradition: as a means of communication, a crucial aspect of ceremonial life, and in defining identity.

In this Seminar, you will experience the rich musical traditions of the Aborigine culture and will explore the role of music as a factor in the development of historical consciousness, including in-depth study of traditional instruments, ceremonial practice, and song form. You will have the opportunity to perform, compose, and record your interpretations of traditional Australian music.

Course-specific field studies include a visit to the Blak Markets in La Perouse to sample Aboriginal culture in a single heritage location.

Interview with Sarah Davidson who studied and interned abroad in London

CAPA WORLD: Tell us a bit about yourself.

SARAH DAVIDSON: I’m a Management and Economics double major from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and I studied abroad in London during summer session. In my free time, I really enjoy being outside, hiking, backpacking and running. I also love reading, exploring new towns and going to the beach with my friends in the summer.

CW: What made you choose a summer program over a semester program?

SD: I chose to go abroad over the summer because I wanted a shorter program that would give me the opportunity to intern as well as earn credit for my home university to avoid a heavy course load in the fall. One of my main goals when studying abroad was to get out and explore all of London. With a lighter course load and part-time internship, my friends and I were able to do just that!

CW: What are some advantages to this shorter summer session.

SD: Students who often take heavy course loads during the semester, or who are in a major that is usually difficult to study abroad with, should definitely consider partaking in a summer program. Not only is it an awesome way to spend a summer, but you have the opportunity to work, gain experience in your related work field and earn credits to help offset a heavy workload during the academic year. During the summer, you also take fewer classes so you have time to explore your area and get to know your surroundings.

CW: What were some of the advantages of a summer internship experience specifically?

SD: Summer internships occur in a very condensed time period so you gain a lot of experience and knowledge in a very short amount of time. I personally enjoyed being thrown into the work environment, gaining many responsibilities quickly and integrating into the team from day one. You get out what you put in and, during a short summer internship, you put in 110% every day. In addition, the (usually) beautiful weather made bonding with my coworkers much easier.

Buenos Aires is a colorful, vibrant city with a similarly interesting history. The CAPA Buenos Aires Global Cities Program is hosted at the highly ranked Universidad Austral, a small private university located in an elegant part of the city. This six-week summer program offers language study as well as our popular Global Cities course which immerses you in the urban environment of this historical port city through course work and frequent field studies.

Through our signature My Global Education program, you’ll have the chance to participate in various events and activities that take place outside the classroom. Such events may include a day outdoors in the Tigre Delta, a popular weekend getaway for Buenos Aires locals, with opportunities to enjoy a boat or catamaran ride and catch a glimpse of the colonial mansions.

CAPA’s Global Cities summer programs give you all of the important components of a study abroad program in a shorter timeframe during your summer. Consider all you can accomplish in six-weeks – like taking classes that truly engage you in the global city in which you are studying, participating in a global internship and gaining valuable hands on experience to add to your resume, learning a language and conversing with the locals, and developing your knowledge of global issues in some of the world’s most iconic cities. You can do all of this, and much more, while earning 6 credit hours!

These programs have been designed to be shorter in length to make them more affordable while still ensuring you fully experience your host city. You’ll have access to a varied academic curriculum, opportunities to do a global internship (Dublin, London and Sydney), and the ability to earn academic credit toward graduation.

Summer programs are a minimum of six-weeks and are offered in all of our locations.

Academic Credits: 6 credits

Global Internship Credits: 3 credits for part-time placements (20 hours per week) and 6 credits for full-time placements (32 hours per week).

Note: Full-time and part-time summer internship placements are available in Dublin and Sydney. CAPA London internships are part-time only.
