Canyon Lake residents are well known for being warm and gracious. It’s no surprise that so many of our guests from the northern states and Canada flock to our locale every winter. Our weather is fairly predictable with lovely fall and spring seasons and winters that are not too cold. But it’s truly the friendly people, the number of enjoyable events and all of the various attractions to ‘see and do’ that draw so many people to Canyon Lake from all over the world.

Water recreation, nature tourism and interest in an absolute spectacular geological treasure uncovered during the 2002 flood are only a few of the fascinating aspects in and around Canyon Lake. The lake and the Guadalupe River is the draw for a lot of fishermen, sailors, wake boarders, jet skiers, kayakers and so much more. For those that like to spend more time relaxing, we have beach areas and picnic sites at parks around the lake. For those with a keen interest in nature, there’s a variety of trails for hiking and mountain biking around the lake and along the river. If fly fishing on the river is your passion, you’ll be in the right area to indulge. Fishing the lake is a year round opportunity with many boat ramps available.

If you love outdoor concerts with rousing entertainers like Ray Wylie Hubbard, Ghostland, Reckless Kelly, Dwight Yoakum, Bleu Edmondson, the Spazmatics, and the great Willie Nelson, then you need to visit Whitewater on the Horseshoe. For those who haven’t been to a concert at the Amphitheater, you’re in for a real treat! Whitewater is located on the Guadalupe River near the crossroads of FM 306 and FM 2673. Tubing, food and beverages, and a great concert all at one location.

If geology, paleontology, and ancient dinosaur tracks appeal to your soul, we have it all in our unique area. The Canyon Lake Gorge appeared after the floodwaters stopped flowing many weeks after the 2002 flood subsided. The Gorge and the Heritage Museum are two must see’s when visiting the Canyon Lake area. We can even show you a few authentic dinosaur tracks!

The Water Recreation Capital cf texas

Canyon Lake, Texas sits conveniently between Austin and San Antonio and just minutes from New Braunfels, Gruene, Spring Branch and Wimberley on the rim of the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Canyon Lake, with its 80 miles of panoramic shoreline, is located 18 miles from New Braunfels, 44 miles to San Antonio and 54 miles to the Austin City Limits, the State’s capital city.

Local attractions are as abundant as the wildlife that roam the hillside and none require sitting in big city traffic. Canyon Lake Gorge, River Road, Schlitterbahn, Natural Bridge Caverns, the nearby Outlet Malls and Gruene Hall draw national and international visitors as well. The lake’s rural ambiance stretches to neighboring small towns for historic jaunts. Day journeys through the Hill Country will find spendid views, museums and wineries, quaint shops, outdoor markets and more.

Canyon Lake has an average depth of 909 feet to hold 8,230 acre feet of water. The terrain of rolling hills and limestone bluffs that holds the clear water of natural streams varies between 350 and 1,200 feet above sea level. Canyon Lake, surrounded by heritage-rich communities like Fredericksburg, Kerrville and Johnson City, has been heavily influenced by a water source for thousands of years. Much of the structural history of the community of Canyon Lake lays at the lake’s bottom but the structure of community spirit thrives with community events.

Canyon Dam, often mistakenly called Canyon Lake Dam, was built to capture the water from the Guadalupe River, one of the best known recreation destinations in the State of Texas. Residents and visitors alike enjoy the beauty and individuality of the upper Guadalupe River that feeds into the lake and the controlled lower Guadalupe River that is fed water, sometimes more and sometimes less, by the water dammed in the lake. Mother Nature determines the water flow that’s supplemented by the clear springs percolating up from the aquifer below.

The adventure starts at Canyon Lake with days of sun and sails. Take a break before heading river side and see our newest treasure, the Canyon Lake Gorge.Created when massive flood waters escaped over the Dam’s spillway in 2002, the water carved a deep scar on the land and exposed 100 million years of geological upheavals from the time the earth was forming – it revealed the tremendous Power of Water, again. After years of preservation and preparation, the Gorge is open to international audiences for guided tours.

The lower Guadalupe River is a favorite for kayaking, canoeing, and of course, tubing – but anglers know it best as the premier southernmost trout fishing destination in the uSA. The upper Guadalupe is more laid-back for the less spirited crowd, but all should at least take a trek down River Road. The winding scenic drive is a good way to get the feel of Canyon Lake.

When Spanish explorers first discovered the Guadalupe Valley, we know they must have thought they found Paradise. We think they were right.

In accordance with this authority, state and local laws and ordinances are authorized to be enforced by those state and local enforcement agencies as well as by the USACE. Canyon Lake Gorge...

The Canyon Lake Gorge was created by a 2002 flood event that resulted in floodwaters escaping over the spillway at Canyon Dam. The water washed away a hillside of mature trees and huge boulders of earth and created a gorge over 1,000 feet wide, one and half mile long and nearly 40 feet below the normal terrain.

Once the water receded the exposed limestone rock provide a treasure of calcium carbonate fossils of skeletons, shells and dinosaur tracks not seen in millions of years. The limestone that is seen today was deposited in the shallow sea that flooded across the margin of the ancestral Gulf of Mexico during the Early Cretaceous period.

The Gorge provides a spectacular look back in time to the Hidden Valley Fault, a part of the Balcones Fault System. The newly exposed limestone makes it possible to see the earth’s faults and fractures. The porosity and permeability of the limestone, lends itself to the movement of underground water, springs and seeps now visible on the surface. Academic scholars and researchers are regular visitors.

A guided Gorge interpretive tour, under open skies, provides the rare opportunity to experience the earth infrastructure that normally lies 40 feet below the surface. During a three-hour tour, you will walk among the exposed fault lines, identify fossils, explore the Early Cretaceous limestone formations, photograph dinosaur footprints, and even follow aquifer waters as they course through the Gorge as springs, channels and waterfalls.

Canyon Lake offers so many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors and we are blessed that they are centered around water. But it didn’t happen by accident – it’s part of our history and part of our roots.

Canyon Lake is built on the edge of the geological formation known as the Balcones Escarpment, the surface expression of Balcones Fault, that forms the eastern boundary of the Texas Hill Country. The two earliest settlements in this part of Texas were situated atop freshwater springs: Comal Springs in New Braunfels is the largest concentration of naturally occurring freshwater springs in Texas; the artesian flow in San Marcos, the second largest, is thought by archeologists to be one of the oldest continually inhabited sites in North America – since 10,000 BC.

The beauty of sparkling water continues to enrich the lives of those who live here in many ways. Newcomers who feel like

they’ve found Paradise – probably have. With splendid views, affordable prices and cool waterways that defy heat and droughts, Canyon Lake is an outdoor paradise with an abundance of wildlife and an abundance of ways to enjoy the outdoors.

Known as the Water Recreation Capital of Texas, Canyon Lake is easily one of the

most scenic lakes in Texas and one of the most popular destinations for a wide variety of water activities.Year round, the water is crystal clear and cool. There are two public marinas, two yacht clubs, two fishing piers and 23 boat ramps in the deep lake. Some of the fun includes lighted floating parades, regattas, water skiing, jet skiing, water boarding, sailing, and powerboats. You can rent a boat, if you need to – and it’s a lot easier than hauling one on a trailer.

Watercraft Rentals at Sunchaser Marine is great at working with you to get you the right rental for your needs. They have a top-of-the-line selection to choose from and a friendly staff too. The staff includes a ‘former’ mechanic that’s touted as one of the best around on Evinrudes. Special request times on rentals are possible with limitations likely. Watercraft Rentals is locally-owned and open

seven days a week from mid-May through Labor Day and sometimes beyond, and they’re only five minutes from the lake.

Mill Marina on the south side and Canyon Lake Marina on the north,

are more than just a place to store your boat. They have all the amenities you need right on the lake where you want to be. They have mechanics on duty and parts, offer boat rentals of all kinds, and Ships Stores stocked with items they know you’ll need. Enjoy casual dining and spectacular sunsets at Sailor’s nightly above the marina.

The two yacht clubs, Hill Country Yacht Club and Lake Canyon Yacht Club, manage private marinas; they offer slip rentals but may have a wait list. Hill Country Yacht Club operates out of Canyon Lake Marina. The lake’s fifth marina is for military use; Randolph and Fort Sam have recently merged their recreation operations. There are swim beaches, fishing docks, and boat ramps that are free, but not all. You can fish from the shoreline on Canyon Lake or at the river coming in or going out, as long as you carry a current Texas fishing license. What a deal!

Plus, fishing is excellent. Largemouth bass is the most popular and abundant species with white bass next in line – striped bass are regularly stocked. The “White Bass Run” when white bass spawn is fun. There are two bait shops, one on the south side of the lake and one on the north.

The newcomers may see what generations have known for thousands and thousands of years. With wide open spaces that give you room to breathe and cool water to pull you outdoors, all you need is to have the fish biting to know that the good life is here. Maybe you’ll decide to stay for awhile.


canyon lake ~ the community

With 80 miles of shoreline and 8,230 acre feet of water at optimum level, Canyon Lake –the community– has room to grow without busting at the seams as it stretches around the lake. With rare exceptions, completion of Canyon Dam in 1964 effectively protected the lower Guadalupe River Basin, parts of which had been inundated by surging flashfloods throughout history, but crisis or shared concern with heavy rains downstream have created life long bonds between neighbors.

“Canyon Lake” is formally a “census-designated place (CDP) in Comal County,” unincorporated and fiercely independent. The designation includes Startzville, Sattler, Canyon City, Crane’s Mill and Hancock. Population from 16,870 in 2000 for the 183 square miles of space has grown to 24,586, with 34,200 estimated for the expanded Greater Canyon Lake area, the whole that all feel part of.

The community known as Canyon Lake that surrounds the water of Canyon Lake is made up informally of about a dozen small communities loosely tied together by the name outsiders recognize, but tightly tied together by their sense of community simply by knowing who's us and who's probably not. Who's us? Cranes Mill, Startzville, Sattler, Canyon City, Hancock, Potters Creek, part of Smithson Valley, the Canyon Lake half of River Road before it gets close to New Braunfels, sometimes Fischer, some of Rebecca Creek and the part of Spring Branch called Mystic Shores – all close to the lake physically and in spirit.

The tie that binds weaves through all the civic-minded participants who belong to the Masons, the Lions Club, Rotary, VFWs, Optimists, the churches who cooperatively are active, ...and on and on, who overlap and ultimately co-mingle as one – the one called Canyon Lake, despite imaginary boundary lines that say otherwise. Communities are physically separated by ranches of undeveloped land but travel from one end of Canyon Lake to the other – takes 20 minutes or less.

The cherished small town ambiance has kept Canyon Lake unique among contemporary projects of similar size. Mom and Pop businesses survive. There's no one centralized business center but several small ones. Traffic congestion is rare (holidays excepted) and the air is clean. There's no city, and little that would be called city lights – just small town communities spread out along the lake’s shoreline collectively and cooperatively operating as one and retaining the laid-back friendly rural feel that defines Canyon Lake today.

River Road in Comal County is one of the genuine gems of Texas. Breathtakingly beautiful water flows through cliffs and hills, lending a sense of calm to those driving, camping, and floating throughout the area. The flows can alternate from sedate to challenging on a weekly basis. The fishing is excellent, and the friendly atmosphere can’t be beat.

Many businesses line River Road offering you scenic places to camp; houses or cabins to rent; rafts, canoes, kayaks, or tubes for floating the river; guided fishing trips; and much more. In the summer, crowds flock to the area, but there are always stretches of river to choose from that are quieter, and stretches that are packed with people having a great time. Business owners excel at setting a trip or a stay to match your mood, and can set your float duration and experience accordingly.

One of the best aspects of visiting the Guadalupe River is its affordability as a vacation for friends and family. Rather than paying city hotel prices and theme park entrance fees, people can come to a place where nature makes your vacation and relaxation comes free. The number of people who choose to return year after year to this scenic wonderland is staggering – but they return for good reasons.

Whether you enjoy the peace of nature or the rollicking good time of a spirited crowd, River Road and the Guadalupe River can satisfy your needs.


The Water Oriented Recreation District of Comal County (WORD) is a special district created by the Texas Legislature in 1987. WORD’s purpose is to collect tax from tourism and water recreation related activities and use those monies for law enforcement, cleanup, community development, and other purposes within the district and on the waterways. The WORD district includes 30 miles of Guadalupe River, Canyon Lake, and the surrounding areas.

WORD has passed ordinances banning glass, Styrofoam, and small plastic containers on the water for reasons of safety and environmental protection. WORD also contracts for law enforcement services on and off the water, and river, lake, and road cleanups. The vast majority of taxes collected go for these purposes.

This area has been nicknamed the Water Recreation Capitol of Texas with good reason. The Guadalupe River both above and below Canyon Lake offers a wide variety of camping, lodging, fishing, including fishing from shore, and floating activities in a breathtakingly beautiful setting. Canyon Lake itself has 23 boat ramps, fishing piers, fishing guides, campgrounds, boat rentals, lodges, and much more on the shores and is a wonderful place to get away from home and relax.

WORD strives to keep the area pristine in many ways. In addition to the regularly scheduled cleanups and officers on duty, WORD takes on special projects as needed. A free, 24-hour public access fishing pier has been added to the north side of the lake at Potter’s Creek to complement the existing one at Crane’s Mill on the south side. Two boat ramps have been reworked and/or extended to facilitate easy lake access, with more under consideration for the future. When the river flows were dropped for Dam maintenance, WORD contracted a crew to clean the lowered river channel and banks.

folks from all over bringing their kayaks and canoes to enjoy the scenic river stretches. Early each year, WORD runs a kid fishing event on the lower river called FuNFISH. The event is free to all children and poles, bait, hot dogs, t-shirts, and drinks are provided free to participants. Bringing your own gear, if you have it, helps the supply of poles

stretch further. Excellent trophies are given for the most fish caught and largest fish in each age group. Last year, over 800 children participated.

Starting in 2010, WORD has been setting aside $20,000 per year to fund programs that bring wounded Veterans out onto the waters of Canyon Lake and the Guadalupe River for recreation and relaxation. Fun-To-SeeT-ShirtsCanyon Dam water is released into the lower Guadalupe River “below the dam.” Because the water comes from the bottom of the lake, it’s cold but refreshing on a hot day. A few natural springs along the way keep it pretty chilly all day.

Tubing — or “toobing” as it is often known around Canyon Lake — is considered one of the best and most enjoyable ways to beat the summertime heat and the Guadalupe River is known as the best waterway in Texas for toobing. We know “toobing” is a good word, because the Guadalupe River is the “Toobing Capital of Texas,” so if we say it’s okay ... then it is!

One of the most popular locations for toobing in our area is “the Horseshoe,” a loop of the river below Canyon Dam that crosses under FM 306 twice and allows tubers to float and then easily walk back to their starting point to float again. Local outfitters offer handy shuttle services for longer floats or for those who don’t want to take the five-minute walk back. Toobing is tiring....

The Horseshoe includes several sections of rapids at various speeds as well as a portion called the “Lazy Leg.” This is a social event. Because tubers must float closely, they meet other groups and make new friends as they travel together. Evidence of the loop’s popularity is most apparent on holiday weekends; glance down the river when you cross it on FM 306. On some holidays, it seems like you see more tubers than surface water.

The duration of the short Horseshoe float is easy to gauge. It normally takes about an hour-and-a-half to two hours, depending on the route you chose; other trips can take considerably longer. It always varies with the rate of the flow that changes daily.

avoid. They can tell you rough spots to maneuver around and how. If some in your group love the river but don’t love toobing, consider renting a raft or two. Quite a few outfitters offer rafts, canoes and kayaks as well as tubes. Depending on flow, a raft trip can be a relatively easy ride or an exhilarating one.

How long you float also depends on where you get in and where you get out. Some exit on River Road in Sattler near the first low water crossing – called the 4th Crossing; they’re numbered opposite from the way the river flows because the numbering starts in New Braunfels coming into Canyon Lake from the other end of River Road – which is the direction settlers came in from. A lot of tubers start on River Road. There’s 20+ miles of choices.

You can tube all the way to Gruene in New Braunfels or further. City of New Braunfels rules start at the Gruene bridge and differ from regulations enforced at the lake, so make sure you ask your outfitter before embarking! Or you can start your tube or raft trip there at Rocking R at the Gruene bridge and see a whole new beautiful part of the Guadalupe – or head upstream to see more.

Less well known but just as fun is tubing above the lake on the upper Guadalupe, a more laid-back experience that takes tubers past stands of ancient cypress trees, through lush riparian forests, and by looming limestone cliffs.

“The upper Guadalupe is less crowded,” said Bill Johnson, proprietor of Guadalupe Canoe Livery, said. “It’s more back-to-nature, scenic ... a family-friendly atmosphere.”

The duration of a “float” on either stretch of the river is determined by the water level .. that determines the speed ... that changes daily – especially below the dam, where outflow is controlled by the Corps of Engineers. Normal flow from the reservoir is 350 cfs and more than 1,199 cfs is considered too dangerous for tubing. (To illustrate an extreme comparison, during the flood of 2002 when water breached the spillway for the first and only time –and carved the Gorge, the rate of flow was 67,000 cfs! The White Bass Run when the white bass start spawning is renowned in many Texas rivers and streams. The Hill County Yacht Club (HCYC) is located at Canyon Lake Marina and promotes sailing and power boating as a wholesome sport for the whole family and one for all ages. They offer instructional, competitive and social activities for sailors and power boaters. Competitive activities include PHRF racing with a race scheduled most months.

The Lake Canyon Yacht Club (LCYC), a membership only club, promotes the art of sailing as its primary focus. Facilities on the northeast side of the Lake occupy 18 acres of land on a bluff overlooking the lake. Consider several factors when fishing Canyon Lake. It’s an older, rocky, deep, clear, highland, canyon reservoir without much living vegetation, like lily pads and grasses. These factors are important because they affect where and how to fish and seasonal patterns. These factors also support why the majority of bass caught in Canyon Lake are 12” to 18” long, although larger bass are caught. The record largemouth is 11.69 lbs and 6.13 lb for smallmouth.

the right gearMany folks use equipment that’s not suited for fishing this lake.Sound crazy? It’s not. Your equipment needs to be suited to the water you fish and is as important as your lure selection, location and presentation. It’s like running off-road tires on your Lincoln Continental – they will roll – but are not engineered for touring or comfort. So, it’s best to downsize your equipment – use lighter lines, rods and reels.

Rods. Rods should be very sensitive, around 6.5’ to 7’ long, medium action with fast to extra fast tips. Higher quality graphite rods are best.

Reels. When using both open-face spinning and bait casting reels, select spinning reels with line capacity of around 100 yards of 8 to 10 lb. It needs to have a smooth and effective adjustable front drag, six or more ball bearings, instant anti-reverse, and avoid those that back up or have triggers. For bait casting reels, capacity should be around 100 yards of 12 to 15 lbs, six or more ball bearing, smooth drag, instant anti-reverse roller bearings, and adjustable braking system minimizing backlashes.

Line. Line preference is 8 to 10 lb on spinning reels and 10 to 15 lb for bait casting; using spectra, fluorocarbon and co-polymer lines is suggested. Co-polymer is more cost effective, strong, very abrasive resistant, lower stretch than monofilament and withstands heat and cold changes effectively. It is also manageable on any type reel and holds knots extremely well.

While the Guadalupe River is famous for toobing, anglers know it best as the premier southernmost trout fishing destination in the US and one of the best 100 trout streams in the nation, as well – the cold tailwater fishery immediately below Canyon Dam is the only place in Texas cold enough for trout to survive year round. If you have kids, make plans around WORD’s FunFish for kids scheduled annually every February to coincide with trout stocking by Texas Parks & Wildlife’s (TP&W) and Guadalupe River Trout unlimited (GRTu), a private conservation group dedicated to protecting fisheries. Let your bait man share what he knows – and hears, while he takes care of your fishing license too.

Tips for all seasons: What’s biting?fishing piers & boat rampsThere are two fishing piers on the lake and one at the base of the dam that are open to the public 24 hours a day. One is on the northwest end of the lake at Potter’s Creek, about 50 yards west of the boat ramp and floating boat dock. The

south pier is on the lake’s south side at the west end at Crane’s Mill, where The Guadalupe feeds into Canyon Lake. The park is closed for renovations but the fishing pier is open. The water is shallow near shore and much deeper the further out you cast.

Five trails around Canyon Lake maintained by the Corp of Engineers are designated for various recreational uses and planned for different levels of challenge. Hikers using the trails may encounter birders, wildlife enthusiasts, cyclists, or even horseback riders on some trails.

Canyon Dam Crest Trail is a scenic, paved, one mile long trail across the top of the dam that many enjoy using for daily exercise, but it is popular with photographers and hikers also. It is accessed via Overlook Park from the south end of the Canyon Dam or North Park from the north and is easy scenic terrain for pedestrians of all ages and abilities.

Guadalupe River South Trail is below the dam on the right bank of the river looking downstream. This scenic trail is for pedestrians but has a more challenging terrain. It winds along the river for almost a mile and is popular with birders and fishermen.

Guadalupe River North Trail is short, paved, and wheelchair accessible and leads to a fishing platform on the left bank. Fishing is great in the discharge area of Canyon Dam especially during trout stocking season from November through February.

Madrone Trail is located in Canyon Park and is open year round. Both hikers and mountain bikers enjoy this seven-mile long trail. It is intermediate to advanced level and has become popular with cyclists throughout the state because of its challenges.

Old Hancock Trail, the only trail along the lake, welcomes hikers and is great for mountain biking and riding horses. Located at the end of Hancock Road near the Canyon Lake Airport, Old Hancock Trail is the only free, public equestrian trail at the Lake. The three-and-a-half-mile long trail runs along the shore to Canyon Park.

Potter’s Creek Park Potter’s Creek Park is a beautiful park with a gorgeous view located on the northwest side of the Lake – take Potter’s Creek Road at the junction of Hwy 484 (Fischer Road). The Park has 114 modern RV campsites, seven screened shelters, ten designated tent camping sites, and five family sites. It has two boat ramps, a new floating fishing pier donated by WORD, and a swim beach for campers. It is open year round. For Potter’s Creek reservations, call 1-877-444-6777.

Canyon Park Canyon Park offers camping only but no RV hookups; the swim beach at the entrance is day use only. Canyon Park has a boat ramp, vault toilets but no showers, two overnight shelters and one day use shelter that works well for sheltering larger groups. Canyon Beach Park is available for day use for paid guests. located on the north shore of the lake – about one mile on the left of Canyon Park Road. Canyon Swim Beach is on the left before entering Canyon Park. Located on the northside of the lake near Hancock, it is open April 1st through September 30th, 7am-10pm

Crane’s Mill Park ~ Park temporarily closed but the pier’s open.Crane’s Mill Park is CLOSED for reconstruction and renovations but the fishing pier outside the park is OPEN. The Park is located on the southwest shore of Canyon Lake at the end of FM 2673.

A lodging list with phone numbers can be found on PAGE 23 that accompanies the map that shows the location of each. It’s always best to plan ahead particularly during peak holiday times. Respect that private property is private and don’t trespass or cut through.

campingc.o.e. publIc parksCanyon Lake parks managed by the uS Army Corp of Engineers (COE) have become a favorite statewide. The Corp estimates more than a million visitors to the parks each year, so some stay full year round. Early reservations are recommended.

Comal, Guadalupe, Overlook Parks and Canyon Beach Park are day use and close at sunset. Camping parks are Potters Creek, Canyon Park, Cranes Mill Park (closed for renovations but the fishing pier is open), and North Park. Overlook Park, Guadalupe Park, and Hancock Trail are open year round – Hancock Trail that allows horses is closed during rain because of mud at the trail head. Canyon Beach and Comal Park are open April through September.

Four intersections on FM 306 with blinking lights indicate access to a park. There are two swim beaches: Canyon Park on the north side accessible from Hancock with Comal Park on the south side. Group shelters are available at Comal Park and Potter’s Creek..

If the parks are full, there are private sites available for rent from tent camping to RV parks, cabins, cottages, B&B’s and lodges speckled all around Canyon Lake and the Guadalupe River, both above the lake and below it.

North Park North Park is located off FM 306 near the dam and is popular with scuba divers who need overnight camping permits – no day use is allowed. There are 19 campsites but no RV hookups, vault toilets, showers, or boat ramp. The park is open from 7am to 10pm.

Comal Park Comal Park is available for day use for paid guests. Comal Park has two boat ramps, 65 picnic sites, a large swim beach, children’s playground, a restroom at the beach and boat ramp, rinse-off shower and horseshoe pit. The turnoff to the Park is on the south shore of Canyon Lake near Startzville, west of the FM 3159 intersection. From FM 2673, turn on to Canyon Bend Street (at the Dairy Queen) and follow signs two more miles. The park is open daily April 1 to September 30 from 7am to sunset.

Guadalupe Park Guadalupe Park is located below Canyon Dam along the first mile of the lower Guadalupe River where water is released from the Dam; the cold water is ideal for the stocked trout, and fishing is excellent. The Guadalupe River is the southernmost sustainable trout fishery in the nation, with this stretch the state’s premier trout fishing stream. Fishing is accessible from the two river trails. It has an ADA-accessible parking lot and trailway to a public fishing pier on the left bank below the hydropower plant. No camping or picnic facilities are available. The restroom at Overlook Park nearby closes at sunset daily. Use of Guadalupe Park is free of charge.

Overlook Park Overlook Park is perched on a hilltop at the south end of the Dam and open daily from 7am until sunset. The Corp’s Canyon Lake headquarters is onsite and provides visitor information and is open 8am to 4:30pm weekdays (excluding federal holidays). There are restrooms but no camping or picnic facilities. Although distant, the park fills in December to watch the Parade of Lights float by at sunset decorated in holiday lights. The close-up seats are on the deck at Sailor’s Lakeside Grill. Friends and friends-to-be meet afterwards down the hill at the Dam Red Barn. Use of Overlook Park is free of charge.

Public recreation areas offer great chances to view and photograph creatures in their natural habitats. It’s estimated that 66 million people enjoyed watching America’s wildlife last year. Wildlife Viewing is defined as birdwatching or other nature study, viewing and photographing natural scenery, and sightseeing. A lot of visitors and residents who continue to be fascinated with all there is to see here will fill that category quickly.

The Hill Country is considered one of the most ecologically diverse areas in the nation with two out of three of the bird species found in all of Texas, 40% of the plant life found in Texas and 200 species of butterflies, but the Hill Country covers only 17% of the State. Over half of the known wildlife in North America are found here. The diversity is due to the actual geographical location, the topography, rainfall and temperature. The variety of birdlife is exceptional and diverse butterfly habitats are abundant as well. Although bats inhabit the entire planet, they are prevalent in the Hill Country with local caves harboring about 12 different species.*

The Corp trails are popular with birders who see osprey, raptors, and waterfowl. Spot sparrows, wrens, migrating warblers, and roadrunners in the fields. See those plus woodpeckers, kingfishers and other riparian birds at Guadalupe River Park. Watch herons, ducks, loons, terns, and osprey near the marina. Bird the equestrian trail at Hancock Park to spot painted bunting, blue grosbeak, raptors, woodpeckers, migrating warblers and more.

Canyon Lake is home to a variety of locations for special events. Several are deep in the midst of the beautiful hill country environment with calming hillside views while others are perfectly situated on the water’s edge unlike anything else in the area. Options include rustic atmosphere to formal settings for small to large groups. This part of the Texas Hill Country has mild temperatures nine to ten months of the year – pretty great for outdoor happenings! Canyon Lake has over 80 miles of shoreline, but very few are venues right on the water. Canyon Lake’s beautiful clear blue waters are an amazing backdrop for any occasion. Some venues include lodging for overnight stays and weekend events. Being away from bright city lights allows one an unobstructed view of the stars above after dark. The stars do go on forever! Because Canyon Lake is a Corps Reservoir, waterside

venues may not offer full electrical power, drinkable water and restroom facilities, along with other strategic issues to consider when planning. But, these charming locations are also unlike any other, and can help you create wonderful, lasting memories with grand photo opportunities!

The Guadalupe River has several unique spots for a riverside event. The Guadalupe River, one of the cleanest rivers in Texas and one of the most popular, is visited by over one million each year. It’s cool, green waters consistently flow year-round, occasionally affected by rainfall. A riverside event may be challenging if held during peak summer months because of the activity on the river, but evenings and other months can provide quiet, relaxing times. The river is also controlled to an extent – no docks or piers along its banks with electrical power, drinkable water and restroom facilities again important items to consider. The natural charm of the river is sure to provide you with indelible memories and beautiful photos.

Event needs, such as tents, chairs, dance floors, lighting, catering, music/DJ’s, other entertainment, photographers, parking, and assistance with event coordination are important parts of your planning. Professional Event Planners or specialists such as Wedding Coordinators can help with professional vendors and manage your event on the day of the event, leaving you free to enjoy the party! Do-it-yourself folks can usually find reputable vendors lists on venue websites to line up all the details on your own. the Life in a live performanceThe Mid-Texas Symphony is in its 34th season that kicks off September 11 – the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy. With three concerts scheduled in Seguin and three in New Braunfels planned each season, they are honoring our country’s sacrifices with an “America The Beautiful” theme for 2011 that includes a Peace on Earth concert for their often sold-out Christmas performance. If you’re on vacation or just passing through Canyon Lake, you owe it to yourself to stop at the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country for a most interesting visit. This unique museum combines displays of the local farming and pioneer

culture as well as over 350 identified, mapped, and documented dinosaur tracks. The footprints are thought to have been made by Acrocanthosaurus, an omnivore, or meat-eater and Iguanadon, a herbivore, or plant-eater.

The property was originally operated as “Dinosaur Flats” in the 1980s, but was closed to the public in the 1990s due to the owner’s illness. Members of the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country acquired the property as a display area for their farm equipment, local antiquities, Canyon Lake Dam displays, and Native American artifacts. It was with the understanding that the Museum would preserve the dinosaur tracks, that the property was leased and later given to the Museum.

Since 2000, the Museum has become a local resource for information on fossils, geology, and dinosaurs. Many scientists, geologists, and paleontologists have made careful studies of the dinosaur tracks for many scientific journals. The Museum has become a source of educational programs and tours for area schools and for anyone interested in the local history as well as the mysterious history of hundreds of millions of years ago.

The annual Dinosaur Day is held in early April from noon to 4pm for educational talks, fossil ID, children’s activities, food, and lots more. You can easily spot the Museum by the dinosaur on the fence and the huge metal roof over the tracks.

Texas state parks offer visitors a little bit of everything: fresh air, solitude, scenic views, exercise, and history. The Hill Country has some of the best parks in the state. The nice thing about Canyon Lake being so centrally located is that you can access some of the these great parks on relatively short day trips.

Here’s a brief guide.

• Blanco State Park—Serene views and fishing are the big

• EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens’ Annual Butterflyfest 3rd Saturday in April is a must for all children. Start the day with the release of thousands of beautiful butterflies! They land everywhere!

• Wimberley Valley Art League’s ArtFest, the same day, a juried art show of artisans across the state follows on the Square. Live music, street theater and more. Wimberley Chamber: 512-847-2201.

• Pumpkinfest festivities start the holiday season every weekend during October. Christmas decorations soon follow to prepare for the Winters Eve festival in mid-December. A stroll through EmilyAnn’s Trail of Lights through New Years is a delight.


German immigrants arrived in the Texas Hill Country in the 1840’s and in 1845, a group of them forded the river and became the first settlers of the City of New Braunfels. In 1878, HD Gruene opened Gruene Hall as the town’s central gathering place; the town thrived for a while, slowed but

never closed during the Great Depression. A virtual ghost town until 1975 when Pat Molak and friend, Mary Jane Nalley, purchased the old gristmill boiler room and renovated it into the celebrated Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar – the Hall came with it. 830-629-5077, www.gruenehall.com.

The German ancestors that settled Canyon Lake communities arrived first at New Braunfels. Exercise classes geared toward seniors, like Silver Sneakers are held daily at the CRRC Rec Center along with a lot of other activities. Attendance is high and more are welcome.

Since February, seniors have been meeting, socializing, trading books and gathering for games at the new Senior Center opened by the Community Resource & Recreation Center (CRRC). It’s next to the Rec Center off South Access Road. Seniors are currently deciding what activities they would like, from Wii Bowling, to Classic Movies watching older films, to Day Trips by bus, and more. Seniors are pleased that emergency services are close by and the retirement community is growing fast.

Programs offered by CRRC, a united Way Agency, from their office location in Sattler include a food pantry, emergency financial assistance for families in need, a free durable medical equipment lend program, and a Meals on Wheels program. CRRC partners with local churches who assist the food pantry with funding to supplement CRRC’s use of the local Foodbank as well as consistent volunteers. Living life in the slower lane eases the transition into retirement because it allows seniors time to volunteer and get involved before retiring. And boy, do they! Because the Canyon Lake Community has over 50 community organizations, many get active early on. The number of volunteers who help locally is staggering.

Due to the lake’s proximity to Randolph Air Force Base and Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, a large group of military retirees have made Canyon Lake their home. These retirees enjoy convenient shopping at the base, Brooke Army Medical Center facilities close by, two active VFW organizations, plus recreational facilities that the bases maintain at the lake. A large number of children of military parents live here because childhood memories camping or fishing at the military rec areas kept them focused.

Winter Texans, retirees who visit the Hill Country to escape the harsh winters up north, stay here to enjoy the mild winters, reasonable prices, and discounts on housing offered in Canyon Lake in the off season months. Many who return annually now know one another as well as local residents. Several hundred are welcomed each February at the Winter Texan Reception, hosted by the Canyon Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Habitat for Safe Seniors also hosts Food Fairs sponsored by the Comal County Food Bank every Friday from 11:30 to 3pm. Those not over 55 are served after seniors. If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you need to take a short drive to South Access Road near Canyon Dam and visit the new Tye Preston Memorial Library (TPML). Open since October of last year, the new 19,000-square-foot library more than tripled the size of the former building in Sattler.

In addition to a full-service library with a larger collection of books and DVDs, expanded children’s area and 27 computer stations, the new building includes the Friends of TPML bookstore, a teen room, several reading areas, a gathering area, and a covered deck overlooking the treetops along the Guadalupe River.

There’s also a 2,100-square-foot community meeting room that can be divided into three separate rooms, complete with a commercial kitchen for catered events.

Bette Wehner, president of the library Board of Trustees, co-chaired the six-year project to build the new library for Canyon Lake.

“TPML from its beginning has been a library built by the community for the community,” Wehner said. “We want residents and visitors alike to feel at home here.”

The 2009/2010 season produced Canyon Lake High School’s first graduation class! Hooray! Girls basketball made the playoffs with boys 4th in District – they're losing a lot of players to graduation.

“This 2010/2011 season basketball team is very young but we are struggling early to excel soon," Coach Monzingo said. Girls’ volleyball made playoffs. Cross Country made their first state qualifier and the swim team had its first regional qualifier. The first track meet of the season is scheduled in Blanco. Tennis, golf and soccer were underway at interview time and baseball had not begun. The football team won their first playoff game against Burnet, formidable former champions. In the 2nd round, they were beaten by only one point – a disappointing loss but winning the first playoff game is huge! All you can say is, "Wow!"

Michael Varhola is an author, editor, publisher, and lecturer. He is the author of “Ghosthunting Maryland,” “Ghosthunting Virginia” and “Fire and Ice: The Korean War, 1950 – 1953.” He co-authored “Armchair Reader: Civil War;” “The Writer’s Complete Fantasy Ref-erence;” and “D-Day: The Invasion of Normandy, June 6, 1944.” An eight-year veteran of the US Army, he served as an infantryman with the 1st Infantry Division (Forward) in Stuttgart, Germany, during the Cold War and as part of a Civil Affairs team attached to the 3rd Armored Division during the First Gulf War.

Over the years I have noticed that many people have heard of a sub-woof-er but don’t really know what it is or what it does. You assume it’s just an-other piece of equipment you are being told to buy and think, “do I really need it?” And of course the answer is “yes, you do!”

A sub-woofer is a complete loud speaker including an amplifier that ranges about 8 to 12 inches in diameter. Since the amplifier is included, it has a power cord and will need a cable running back to a surround sound receiver or A/V re-ceiver. Even though the word speaker is being used the bass frequencies are so low they are felt more than heard. Most of the time, if you had a sub-woofer, it was included with a set of surround sound speakers and not much thought was given to it. It is extremely important to a surround sound system – and an experienced A/V designer or installer will always recommend investing in a quality sub-woofer.

Most sub-woofers have settings that need to be adjusted to the room and the type of system you have. Symptoms of an improperly installed sub-woofer are not enough bass or a “booming” or “messy” sound in the room.

One of the design aspects we consider is how much air we need to move in the room in order to feel the sub-woof-er. The sub-woofer must be selected to fit the room if you want it to work properly. When you are watching an action-packed movie and the plane crashes, you should be able to feel the crash. If you are watching a rock concert and the drummer breaks out into his drum solo, you should feel the drums not just hear them. This gives you a much more realistic experience.

Entertain the idea of a home surround system, it will be well worth it and give you years of pleasure right in your own home, but as I say often – and this is really true with a sub-woofer – you absolutely get what you pay for!
