CANNON CLASS DESTROYER ESCORT USS SLATER VERSIONAbout the Cannon class Destroyer Escort USS Slater version :
Protection of convoys crossing both the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans needed the design of a class of warship specialized in the submarine hunt. The USA developed the Destroyer Escorts, a smaller, less armed and slower unit than the fleet destroyers of the Fletcher class. Of the 507 DEs built, 72 are of the Cannon class. Many different arrangements of the anti-aircraft armament exist between these ships, depending on the availability of guns or origin of shipyards. The last Cannons built by Tampa Shipbuilding Co. (DE-763 to DE-771) have three 40mm Bofors twins amidships. Of these, only USS Slater DE-766 still survives today and is a museum ship in Albany, New York.
