1854 The first packaged box of Whitman's Chocolate is produced in Philadelphia.
1868Richard and George Cadbury, the second generation of Cadburys, makes the first Valentine's Day box of chocolates starting the tradition that continues today.
1870’sBlack Jack chewing gum was originally introduced with no flavoring. The famous licorice flavor it’s known for wasn’t added until 1884.The Adams Company makes a single batch of nostalgia gums every three years including Beemans, Black Jack and Clove gums.
1880’sCandy Corn is America’s best selling Halloween candy. Three colors on one piece of candy was revolutionary for this time. Today nearly 8.3 billion kernels of candy corn are sold every year. 80% of these sales occur between September and October.
1893William Wrigley Jr. introduces Juicy Fruit Chewing Gum and Wrigley's Spearmint Chewing Gum.
1896Invented by Austrian immigrant Leo Hirschfeld. Named after his daughter's nickname, "Tootsie".
1900Hershey’s chocolate bar was invented by Milton Hershey. Originally a luxury item that only the wealthy could afford. In 1908 Milton Hershey adds almonds to his famous bar and voila! Hershey’s with almonds.
1901Multicolored candy disks called NECCO Wafers first appear. The name stands for New England Confectionery Company.
1902New England Confectionery Company (NECCO) makes the first Conversation Hearts which are still a thriving Valentine's tradition.
1906Hershey's Milk Chocolate Kisses appear in the iconic silver foil wrapping and a town in Pennsylvania called Derry Church changes it's name to Hershey.
1908Theodor Tobler and his cousin Emil Baumann invent a delicious Swiss Milk Chocolate and Honey and Nougat infused candy bar called Toblerone.
1910’sWatermelon sugared hard candy was known to be soothing to the throat and naturally relieved dryness. Claey’s Candies was established in 1919 and offers 11 different flavors.
1911Ethel and Frank Mars open a candy company in Tacoma, Washington. The company, later Mars Inc., would become one of the largest, privately owned candy companies in the entire world.
1912In 1912, candy manufacturer Clarence Crane of Garrettsville Ohio, invented Life Savers as a "summer candy" that could withstand heat better than chocolate. The candy's name is derived from its similarity to the shape of Lifebuoys used for saving people who have fallen from boats.
1920 Williamson Candy Company, introduces the O'Henry! Bar.
1921 Chuckles, colorful, sugared jellied candies, hit the market.
1922Abba-Zaba Bar has thick chewy taffy with a rich creamy peanut butter center. Has that old fashioned taffy pull and was very popular on the West Coast.
1928This bubble gum became so popular it was included in the rations of American soldiers in World War 2.

1932 These candy shell peanuts were nutritious and sweet.
1932M&M Mars debuts the 3 Musketeers, featuring chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry nougat. This flavor combination lasted until 1945 when it became all chocolate.
1934White fudge not chocolate surrounds caramel, peanut butter and an almond nougat. Originally invented by the Hollywood Candy Company in Hollywood, Minnesota. Named because the white fudge gave the impression of zero degrees.
1940Wax Bottles (Nik-L-Nip)
Name is a combination of original cost (a nickel) and preferred wax bottle opening technique (Nip – to rip off the top) Bottles contain an assortment of different candied syrups.
1941M&M's Plain Chocolate candies are introduced in response to depressed chocolate sales during the summer months (these candies will melt in you mouth, not in your hands). 59 years later, M&M Mars shortened the name to M&M's
1945The Mason Company introduces Dots in strawberry, cherry, orange, lime and lemon flavors.
1946The Almond Joy Bar was introduced as a replacement for the Dream Bar (created in 1936) that contained diced almonds with coconut.

1970’sRonald Reagan’s love for the candy inspired the blueberry flavor so he could serve red white and blue beans at inaugural parties.
1975Air pockets of carbonation (co2) release in your mouth when the candy melts and creates a crackling sensation and a popping sound. Original flavors were orange, cherry and grape.
