õ

A WELCOME TO ZOOM CANDLELIGHT CAROLS

õ SAINT N ICOLAS WELCOMES US ALL TO THE FESTIVITIES

Christmas comes but once a year those Christmas bells as sweetly chime, as on the day when first they rung so merrily in the olden time, and far and wide their music flung: shaking the tall grey ivied tower, with all their deep melodious power: They still proclaim to every ear, Old Christmas comes but once a year.

We joyously welcome you to our Christmas revels! Eat, drink and be merry! Listen and hear the wondrous Christmas story. Sing the carols that enliven this season and gladden the heart. And when you go from these revels, take with you the joy of this season, and most importantly, share the love of the Lord God who gave us a Son to redeem this world. And now, let the festivities begin with a happy carol, Merry Christmas to all - and God bless us, everyone!

little tree by E. E. Cummings

little silent Christmas tree you are so little you are more like a flower who found you in the green forest and were you very sorry to come away? see i will comfort you because you smell so sweetly i will kiss your cool bark and hug you safe and tight just as your mother would, only don't be afraid look the spangles that sleep all the year in a dark box dreaming of being taken out and allowed to shine, the balls the chains red and gold the fluffy threads, put up your little arms and I'll give them all to you to hold every finger shall have its ring and there won't be a single place dark or unhappy then when you're quite dressed you'll stand in the window for everyone to see and how they'll stare! oh but you'll be very proud and my little sister and i will take hands and looking up at our beautiful tree we'll dance and sing "Noel Noel"

ô The Holly and the Ivy

The holly and the ivy, when they are both full grown, of all the trees that are in the wood, the holly bears the crown. The rising of the sun, and the running of the deer, The playing of the merry organ, sweet singing in the choir.

The holly bears a blossom, as white as the lily flower, and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, to be our sweet Saviour. The rising ....

The holly bears a berry, as red as any blood; and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, for to do us sinners good. The rising .....

Page 4: Candlelight Carols Program 2020

The Holly bears a prickle, as sharp as any thorn, and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, on Christmas day in the morn. The rising .....

The Holly bears a bark as bitter as any gall, and Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ, for to redeem us all. The rising .....

What the Donkey saw by UA Fanthorpe

No room in the inn, of course, And not that much in the stable, What with the shepherds, Magi, Mary, Joseph, the heavenly host – Not to mention the baby Using our manger as a cot. You couldn’t have squeezed another cherub in For love or money.

Still, in spite of the overcrowding, I did my best to make them feel wanted. I could see the baby and I Would be going places together.

ö Have a holly, jolly Christmas

Have a holly, jolly Christmas, it’s the best time of the year, I don’t know if there’ll be snow but have a cup of cheer. Have a holly, jolly Christmas and when you walk down the street, say hello to friends you know and everyone you meet.

Ho, Ho, the mistletoe, hung where you can see somebody waits for you. Kiss her once for me. Have a holly, jolly Christmas and, in case you didn’t hear, Oh, by golly, have a holly, jolly Christmas this year!

Wassailing Song - Traditional

Wisselton, wasselton, who lives here? We’ve come to taste your Christmas beer. Up in the kitchen and down the hall, Holly, ivy, and mistletoe; A peck of apples will serve us all, Give us some apples and let us go

Up with your sticking, on with your shoe, If you haven’t any apples, money will do. My carol’s done, and I must be gone, No longer can I stay here. God bless you all, great and small, And send you a happy new year.

õ Here we come a-wassailing

Here we come a-wassailing among the leaves so green, here we come a-wand'ring so fair to be seen.

Love and joy come to you and to you your wassail too, and God bless you and send you a happy new year, and God send you a happy new year.

God bless the master of this house, likewise the mistress too, and all the little children that round the table go. Love and joy……

Mince Pies and Donkeys – Extract from Donkey in the Meadow by Derek Tangye

On Christmas Eve we took mince pies to the donkeys in the stable. A lightened gesture, a game for ourselves, an original diet for them

“Donkeys! Donkeys!” Jeannie called into the darkness of he meadow. “Come into the stables. We’ve got something for you”. And after a minute or two, their shadows loomed, heralded by enquiring whimpers

“Fred”, I said. “You’re about to have your first mince pie”.

Inside we lit a candle in an old fashioned candlestick and put it on the window sill. The light flickered softly. It flickered on their white noses, their eager faces, their giant rubber-like ears. They pushed their heads forward, nuzzling us in expectation.

“Patience, patience!” said Jeannie, holding the mince pies high in her hand. “Don’t be in such a hurry!” And then with a quick movement she gave one to each of them.

As I stood watching, I began to feel the magic of the occasion. Our intention had been to have a joke, to enjoy the merry spirit of Christmas and now, unexpectedly, something else was taking place.

Page 6: Candlelight Carols Program 2020

“Look at their crosses”, I said to Jeannie. The cross of Penny was black merging into black but that of Fred was easy to see; the dark line tracing up the backbone beneath his fluffy brown coat until it reached his shoulders, then stopping abruptly when it met the two lines tracing down each foreleg. “Here we are”, I went on. With two biblical creatures, eating mince pies”. “In a stable” said Jeannie. “On Christmas Eve” I said.

There was the gentle sound as they shifted their feet on the cobblestones and I was aware too of the musty scent of their coats.

Ageless simplicity, laughed at, beaten, obstinately maintaining an individuality; here indeed was a moment when there was a communication with the past.

ô Go tell it on the mountain

Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; Go tell it on the mountain that Jesus Christ is born!

While shepherds kept their watching o’er silent flocks by night, Behold, throughout the heavens there shone a holy light. Go tell….

Down in a lowly manger the humble Christ was born, And God sent us salvation that blessed Christmas morn. Go tell…

From “A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens – read by John Covell

õ Jingle, Bells

Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh, o'er the fields we go, laughing all the way; bells on bobtail ring, making spirits bright, what fun it is to ride and sing, a sleighing song tonight. Oh, jingle, bells, jingle, bells, jingle all the way; oh what fun it to ride in a one horse open sleigh, jingle, bells, jingle, bells, jingle all the way; oh what fun it to ride in a one horse open sleigh.

Now the ground is white, go it while you're young, let's all go tonight, and sing this sleighing song. Just get a bobtailed bay, two-forty for his speed; then hitch him to an open sleigh and crack! you'll take the lead. Oh, jingle, bells....

Minstrels by William Wordsworth

The minstrels played their Christmas tune Tonight beneath my cottage-eaves; While, smitten by a lofty moon, The encircling laurels, thick with leaves, Gave back a rich and dazzling sheen, That overpowered their natural green.

Through hill and valley every breeze Had sunk to rest with folded wings: Keen was the air, but could not freeze, Nor check, the music of the strings; So stout and hardy were the band That scraped the chords with strenuous hand.

And who but listened? – till was paid Respect to every inmate’s claim, The greeting given, the music played In honour of each household name, Duly pronounced with lusty call, And “Merry Christmas” wished to all.

² The Boar's Head Carol

The verse is sung by a soloist; all join on the refrain: Caput apri defero, reddens laudes Domino. First Coming by Madeleine L’Engle

He did not wait till the world was ready, till men and nations were at peace He came when the Heavens were unsteady and prisoners cried out for release.

He did not wait for the perfect time. He came when the need was deep and great.

He died with sinners in all their grime, turned water into wine. He did not wait till hearts were pure. In joy he came to a tarnished world of sin and doubt. To a world like ours, of anguished shame He came, and his Light would not go out.

He came to a world which did not mesh, to heal its tangles, shield its scorn. In the mystery of the Word made Flesh The Maker of the stars was born.

Page 8: Candlelight Carols Program 2020

We cannot wait till the world is sane to raise our songs with joyful voice, for to share our grief, to touch our pain, He came with Love: Rejoice! Rejoice!

õ I saw Three Ships I saw three ships come sailing in, on Christmas day, on Christmas day, I saw three ships come sailing in on Christmas Day in the morning.

And what was in those ships all three, On Christmas day.......

Our Saviour Christ and his lady, on Christmas day.....

Pray, whither sailed those ships all three, on Christmas day...

O they sailed into Bethlehem, on Christmas day....

And all the bells on earth shall ring, on Christmas day....

And all the angels in heaven shall sing, on Christmas day...

And all the souls on earth shall sing, on Christmas day...

Then let us all rejoice amain! on Christmas day..... Remarks by Richard Hoskins

Now bring us some figgy pudding, now bring... and bring some out here. (Over) Good tidings.... For we all like figgy pudding, for we... so bring some out here. Good tidings.... THE RECIPE FOR WASSAIL – THANKS TO GRETCHEN ZOOK

Wassail (The Williamsburg Cookbook)

20 servings

Wassailing is an ancient English custom, part of the feasts and revelry of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, which have been revived in Colonial Williamsburg. The master of the English household drank to the health of those present with a bowl of spiced ale, and each in turn after him passed the bowl along and repeated the Saxon phrase Wass Hael, “be whole,” or “be well.” 1 cup sugar 4 cinnamon sticks 3 lemon slices 2 cups pineapple juice 2 cups orange juice 6 cups dry red wine ½ cup lemon juice 1 cup dry sherry 2 lemons, sliced Boil the sugar, cinnamon sticks, and 3 lemon slices in ½ cup of water for 5 minutes and strain. Discard the cinnamon sticks and lemon slices. (I strain the syrup to discard the lemon slices and seeds but return the cinnamon sticks to the syrup until I am ready to serve. The syrup can be made in advance.) Heat but do not boil the remaining ingredients. Combine with the syrup, garnish with the lemon slices, and serve hot.
