I have so much to be grateful for this year and have exciting ministry news to share. Before I delve into my personal ministry announcements, I think it is critical that we pray (and pray without ceasing) for those affected by the government shutdown. The realities are settling in and it is terrifying for those living paycheck to paycheck. To this end, Rob Strassburger, who shepherds our Thanksgiving Basket ministry, asked that the surplus funds raised last year be given to feed furloughed government workers. Our Canon Missioner, Leonard Hamlin, then found the perfect partner to distribute our $8000 gift—which translates into groceries for 400 families. God is good! (Please see below for more details.) Now on to other thrilling news. We’re going to have a Mardi Gras fundraiser and celebration on March 5 to raise money for our Pride Parade float! While the Cathedral has long had a delegation marching in the Pride Parade behind a prominent WNC banner, I thought after the parade last year that we definitely needed a float of epic proportions! Our cathedral looms large over the District skyline, so naturally we should have a more prominent role in the parade, especially following our Matthew Shepherd memorial service last fall.
