Greetings and a warm welcome to our first issue of Campus Diary Magazine in 2016! We couldn’t

be more excited to have you with us all through!. Please take some time to get to know the layout of our magazine. You will notice we have different categories that anyone in campus can relate to.

You can look at one category at a time, or just peruse the articles on the home page to choose which to read first. Just as with a paper magazine, you may want to sit and read the whole thing at once, or come back to this issue several times to digest the articles more slowly.

When we set out to create an on-line magazine that would positively promote campus lifestyle, one thing we agreed on right away was to steer-away from being the cliché of the too-perfect, product-driven magazines that we all sometimes read. What you will find in the pages of our magazine is a collection of inspired and instructive articles written by real, honest, down-to-earth campus students who are hardworking and

deliberately want to put their talent to good use, besides not being afraid to admit the struggles they sometimes face while studying. And it’s not all about studying! There is a totally fun part to this. We are intent on ensuring everyone in campus is informed on whatever is going on. We are also realistic and flexible.

We try to be great examples for everyone in campus. We are honored to share the work of so many committed and thoughtful people. Please visit our site www.campusdiary.co.ke to see the wonderful contributors and read a lot about Campuses in Kenya. Also, feel free to leave comments on the articles to share your thoughts or ask the writers questions.

We appreciate your support and are so happy to have you as a reader of Campus Diary Magazine.

With warmest thanks,Campus Diary Team

Dear Editor

I am writing to express my excitement to the idea of having a magazine solely dedicated to Campus Students. For a long time we have been fed with irrelevant information by the mainstream media but now this gives us a complete feeling of the identity we have been yearning for as college students.

Looking forward to enjoying this and many other editions of this campus magazine.

Cheers!Stacy KamonyaCUEA

The incumbent Chairm an Paul Ongili popularly known as Babu Owino is again looking to retain the seat but faces competition from opponents who aren’t promising him an easy ride this time round.

According to the official list of aspirants released by the SONU electoral commission the other aspirants include Babu’s archrival Mike Jacobs. Babu has been on the reign for three terms. A win in the upcoming election will extend his leadership period to four academic years something that hasn’t

Other incumbents including Kate K’Okumu the incumbent Finance Secretary, are also campaigning across the six campuses to ensure that they retain their seats. Geoffrey Mosiria, the once fierce rival to Babu Owino will be going for the post of sports secretary.

from My Own Perspective

Being affiliated to the best university in East (or is it Eastern) Africa is a joy. My relatives’ eyes glint with joy whenever they ask me what year I am in or when I will graduate or how school is. This feeling sparks from the moment you attend orientation, if you are obedient enough to attend the University of Nairobi’s orientation. The lecturers sure do put on a show as they tell you how privileged you are to be accepted by the university which you should never call Nairobi University or just University of Nairobi but THE University of Nairobi. They emphasize on the importance of

KCSE 2015Best and Worst Performers

As the 2015 KCSE was released at the beginning of March the question of who performed better or worse than who hasn’t completely eluded the minds of Kenyans despite the Ministry Of Education completely scrapping examination ranking.

Kabarak High School led the list of best performers with the top mini score of 11.357 in the country followed by Kapsabet High which recorded had a mean score of 11.125. Maseno School in Kisumu County had the third best mean score nationally — 10.935 — and was closely followed by Alliance High School with a mean score of 10.853.

While the Ministry of education does not release results of schools

while ranked independent surveys reveal that Starehe Boys once again failed to regain the top spot as has been the case in previous years with the institution having a reputation of being an academic giant in the country.

Other schools that emerged among top performers nationally were Nairobi School, with a mean score of 10.853, Asumbi Girls in

Homa Bay County with 10.759, Starehe Boys Centre (10.637), Utumishi Academy (10.58) and Rang’ala Girls in Siaya County with a mean score of 10.476.

Mang’u High School had a mean score of 10.466 while Maranda had 10.45.Alliance, besides having 123 straight As also had the second highest number of candidates (348) after Maranda (480), followed by Nairobi School (316).

The number of candidates who obtained grade A rose to 3,073, up

from 2, 722 in 2013. Overall, there were 149,717 candidates who scored grades C+ and above, which is the minimum university entry point. Among the qualifiers were 88,299 males and 61,418 females, constituting a ratio of 59: 41.

Nationally, some 273,728 students scored C minus and below, meaning that they did not qualify for university admission.

this new journey in your life. When you leave the hall after orientation you are psyched to be a focused student of THE University of Nairobi and prepare for your next lecture which the lecturer (who told you how serious you should take your classes during orientation) probably doesn’t attend or shows up half an hour late. You dismiss this first time thinking that maybe he was caught in serious traffic or was slowed down by the rain.

I am a law abiding citizen however I am not particularly a fan of rules and THE University of Nairobi lets be with minimal rules and minimal chances or getting caught if I break them. Well, unless I get caught by an uptight guard smoking or drinking

within the school. Cheating will be overlooked in most instances unless the Examination Officer catches you with a “Mwa-Kenya” during his exam. If you are lucky you will have a few bucks to convince him not to get you expelled, if not, your bladder my just betray you before you reach the school’s filth filled toilets after what will happen next.I’ll never forget my shock when that smitten third year mechanical engineering guy came and sat next to me during my first English class. That was his way of showing his interest. Also when that girl poured yoghurt on another’s head after discovering that she was talking smack behind her back or when I held my heart in my hand while trying to exercise my democratic right by voting for my classmate during the elections as the

drunken “goons” hauled insults and bottles at each other.

I sure would miss the dumb adventures and stories that my fellow comrades now carry in their souls and I will enjoy how good THE University of Nairobi is going to look in my resume after those long lectures and hard earned results. Not to mention some lecturers’ red faces when we’d get to their nerves.

Life in campus is pretty easy when it comes to the financial stability of thy pocket

Page 31: Campus diary 1st Magazine

31

A ray of hope however glimmers at the end of this dark poverty stricken tunnel, if only sacrifices are made in the tedious walk towards the light. For starters you do not need new stuff. I’m aware that some companies could probably sue me for this, but you do not need it if it’s not broke. I am not one to judge, however the fact, that you constantly put your wallet to the test every Friday night is dehumanizing. Think of it this way; you are not necessarily where you want to be financially so

Life in campus is pretty easy when it comes to the financial stability of thy pocket, I mean, c’mon every penny is basically handed down to you, either in form of pocket money or HELB loans. However, by virtue of living in an era where squandering the little one receives on flashy lifestyles is the in thing, the wallet often declines part in our extravagant escapades. On most occasions the better half of the semester is thus spent on sending those irritating ‘please call me’s’ to the groupie of friends you just so happened to sponsor at a local joint during end month. Get real; we both know they won’t call back. At least not with the mid-month recession.

Page 32: Campus diary 1st Magazine

32

If money management isn’t something you enjoy, consider the perspective of looking at it as if it were a part-time job. The time you spend monitoring your finances will eventually pay off, Plus you can actually make real money by cutting down on expenses and earning more interest on savings and investments.

Before I go any further, let it be known, that in no form whatsoever is gambling an investment! If, you actually doubt this, take a breather by putting

exactly what is it your celebrating in a nightclub at 2am in the morning??

Page 33: Campus diary 1st Magazine

33

your basic mathematics to the test. Simply calculate the total amount you earn against your losses and thank me later. Gambling is nothing but a shortcut and darling shortcuts always tend to go wrong when you least expect it. Please do note that, it is not about how much money is made but the much that is kept. It will always come down to how hard it works and the number of generations it is kept for. Therefore always make an effort to try to save something while the income is still small; as it is basically impossible to save when the income increases.

Do appreciate where you currently stand in life, but do not be content with the current predicament. Won’t more, save more, Invest more. Cause, that Y.O.L.O attitude won’t feed you years down the line when all the bad financial decisions come to haunt you.

Being a mere basic ordained with financial freedom, always remember money is an opportunity for happiness, but it is also an opportunity that people routinely squander because the things they think will make them happy often don’t.

Not everyone gets the chance to go to campus! Yes, it’s an honor that should therefore be taken with pride. Normally at the start of our campus life most of us, if not all of us always have a list either written or non-written things we want to achieve while in campus. But as time progresses our resolutions begin to lose the original luster and we continue with our lives no different than the previous before especially

Cheers to the Campus Generation!

when things start getting so uptight in campus we do away with the very inspiring dreams with had at the start. I must admit I’m such a kind of person that tends to start something with so much gusto but the zeal fades away midway. Then at the end of the year when analyzing how the year has been I start lamenting how life is the same year in year out failing to realize the main reason is because I do everything the same way year in year out. We pay little or no attention to the encounters we have.

Life goes much deeper than the superficial encounters we have. Haruki Mukarimi known for a number of literary trademarks, with dark humor, reality-bending plots and incisive social observation

said in his book Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, “Dreams come from the past, not from the future. Dreams should not control you, you should control them.” We should use our past to dream and set the targets if we are to reach any achievement. We must become bigger than we have been before, more courageous, greater in spirit and larger in outlook. Let us be braver, authentic, and discreet and have the grit to face any situation not waiting for some miracle to come knocking on your door.

Always do your best. Your best is going to change from moment to moment. Nature rarely repeats herself and possibilities of one human soul will not be found in another. Even the greatest men did not reach the great heights by sudden flight, while they were toiling up in the nights, the rest were sleeping.

You are in campus! Cheers to that! If you do everything the same way as before it will be just another normal stage for you. Strive to be different. Strive to be better. Every sunrise is an opportunity to be better than yesterday. Do not wait when things get bumpy to re-evaluate and make resolutions. Let the difference begin today. Let the difference be every day.

Dear former crush,I am writing hoping for the first time you will read. It is not lost to me how you loath reading if it is not about fashion. The pain I have been going through after I set my eyes on you has made life bitter than the vodka I always looked forward to drinking. But that’s love; you give completely everything, sacrifice but in the end get nothing.I can see conspiracy around every corner, a conspiracy of the anti-love. Being super nice is not a great quality after all; people use you and make you a staircase in their selfish pursuits. I have tried my best to do everything right, but why do I end up getting everything wrong? It would be small minded to think a God does not exist given the inconceivable vastness of our life and the entire universe. If ever given the chance to go back in time, what would you change? What would you like to have happened differently?

Opinion Column

Well, here is a fun fact: That won’t ever happen. So far we’re almost done with the first quarter of 2016, what has changed? Let’s try and make wise decisions and live for the moment such that the year ends with nothing to regret about. If it’s up to you, do it right because you only get one shot and if it’s not up to you let go and let God. I think everyone’s goal in 2016 must have been to be busy, making money of course...not busy throwing parties and spending money but rather saving up and building yourself because if not now , but when? Tomorrow? Or the day after, or the day after that?? I mean it’s one thing to procrastinate your assignments and chores but your success? That’s a whole other story. Make it happen and make it happen now.

As young people in campus we share this common mentality that is the ‘Tomorrow’ mentality. We believe that our future is tomorrow. We are totally mistaken, the future is now because no one

is promised of tomorrow. Dare to dream and be even more daring to follow your dreams. Don’t allow anyone to waste your time or don’t do anything that will not lead you a step closer to your dreams. Surround yourself with people who build you and motivate you because you only need good vibes. Encourage others not to wait for tomorrow. Let’s make our generation great. There is no tomorrow, the time is Now.

So instead of a selfie challenge or the ice bucket challenge, here’s a challenge; have something to show for the year 2016, something you consider an achievement.

Lots of love for all the young people out there, xoxoMisha.

You wake up from a deep sleep, eight hours undisturbed, look sideways to see whether you are still in a familiar world and thereafter do a few tasks before chucking away. The young man, full of energy courageously crosses the road and Alas! ‘Where did I see this woman?’ The woman passes by and too conscious of the environment, my friend turns with a style to look back. Tapping his head for such a bad mind, he tends to move on just before he remembers where he was with the woman….in his sleep.

On Google, I went with the search of ‘condition of confusing something to another’. Google isn’t yet devolved, is it? I was taken to a medical list of herpes, skin diseases and other maladies that one would think most of us are sick. I know there is a term for it as there is anaesthesia where one stimulation can simultaneously attract another. You can see a bulb as danger or one’s mouth as an eye! Before we find the term, let us use Wikipedia’s nearest term to the situation- mental confusion. It states ‘These refer to the loss of orientation or the ability to place oneself correctly in the world by time, location; and personal identity. Mental confusion is sometimes accompanied by disordered consciousness (the loss of linear thinking) and memory loss (the ability to correctly recall previous events or learn new material)’. It is not about delirium or such extent of a problem. It is about those small ‘lapse’ moments that come in between even the active of moments.

Have you not gone from the house singing to the end the song you were listening to? Has one song never taken the better part of your days? It does not matter whether you sung it well or not because when lyrics are hard, you can hum or whistle. Have you never withdrawn your curse word when you found out that you had said it in a foreign forum?

My friend likes playing candy crash and she drooled to start

tapping the empty air before her. And she was smiling at her wins! A lover of computer shooting games saw the airplane above him and wondered where in his world he had shot at it! A child confuses everything to a

play object and that may not be the comparison here.

During normal working or talking time, a man has suddenly and severally asked, ‘How are you?’ The girl, mature enough to see it not as a bother has always severally replied, ‘I am good my friend’. A footballer has always seen two trees or stands as goal posts. A driver

Campus life could be fantastic and depressing at the same time. It all depends on how you carry yourself. You need to master some unspoken rules in order to survive seamlessly in campus. It can be difficult at times to realize there are other people outside of your bubble. In order to make campus a better place for everyone to share, there are a few things we can do as individuals that could have an impact on the overall atmosphere and the aura surrounding us.

Campus EtiquetteThe Do’s and Don’ts of Campus Life

Page 57: Campus diary 1st Magazine

57

For instance, the seemingly easy task of traveling to and from classes on campus can prove to be stressful for some students. The day-to-day grind on campus can get hectic as some of us run across campus to make it from class to class on time. In order to make the journey a little easier on everyone, students should be more observant when walking and driving on campus.Being conscience of your fellow students is an easy way to be polite. This practice can simply be leaving room for others to use the sidewalk when walking in a group. As basic as it may seem, employing this habit can ease the travel of students to and from destinations more quickly and removes the anxiety of breaking through a crowd.Don’t try to sneak/cut into a line when others are making a queue. Don’t eat strong-smelling food in class. It’s fine to eat when you’re hungry, but try to keep it simple with just something like a snack. It’s easier for the people around you to pay attention to the lesson without the pungent smell of your tuna-fish sandwich at nine in the morning.Avoid senseless arguments and fights with fellow students. University is supposed to breed good morals and not hooliganism. And most important, participate in activities and socialize with other students.

HOW TO HUNT FOR A MAN WHILE IN CAMPUS

By virtue of being an inhabitants of a society that constantly preaches against chauvinism and advocates for women empowerment, it is safe to conclude that the male species have officially become the haunted with the formation of the ‘fissette’ sacco.

Personally, I think we are most afraid of the unknown. It creeps up and consumes our mortality whole. No matter how much we deny it, we are afraid of not knowing whether it’s all really worth it. Not knowing if it’s right to give up or keep fighting. Not knowing why we do the things we do,

“introduce a little mystery into the conversation. Tell him only that which seems relevant and nothing more. Let him long to unravel the chapters of your book

Page 65: Campus diary 1st Magazine

the way we do them; not knowing the purpose. It’s like when you’re little and you play with flames and end up with a scar all cause you didn’t know fire burns. Not knowing has always hurt us, from the very beginning. So, you like that Guy? Why not make the move with these steps and know? You have literally nothing to lose.

1. Keep It MysteriousAssuming you have found a way around the acquisition of his number, do introduce a little mystery into the conversation. Tell him only that which seems relevant and nothing more. Let him long to unravel the chapters of your book. No one really reads a book they know everything about even without having to even open it.

2. Call Once In A Blue Moon. The three types of males. Alpha. Beta. Omega. Although seemingly different are all rarely fascinated by long phone conversations thus keep it brief and meaningful. Always.

Page 66: Campus diary 1st Magazine

66

Be honest about what you choose to utter. If you feel ‘Tomorrow land’ is overrated or J Coles’ ‘forest drive’ is cheesy. Say it. Everyone appreciates a little honesty.

It is essential to end the conversation before things get too interesting or too boring. This will always pick his curiosity and we all know what happened to the curious cat, don’t we?

3. Do not be too needy.Members of the female species often feel the need to constantly communicate. Probably the reason why they top charts as professional gossipers. If your genuinely interested in that campus Jamaa. Stop being too needy and live your own life. Appreciate the fact that he even spares a portion of his time to talk to you. Don’t be the green faced monster by constantly asking where he is, who he is with etc. . . . It is simply none of your business, so stick to your lane woman!

4. Initiate Subtle Physical Contact. When the both of you meet/ hangout outside social media, it’s a safe bet to initiate contact. Again, keep it subtle. Don’t give him the impression that you’re clingy. Guys loathe that, so save it for when he is officially your boyfriend!

Maintain eye contact as often as you can. Listen to all he is saying and respond with honest criticism. You definitely don’t want him chasing the wrong figments of you.

6. Let Him Know That You Are Interested. This tactic often works for the bold hearted. After getting to know

he and you are certain he is the “one”, Woman up and express. The worst that could happen after all is rejection. If turned down, cry a river. Build a bridge. Cross the bridge and ensure you never cry over the same damn reason. He is just not worth it darling!

5. Live On. Make Merry. Be You. Always.Whatever outcome, Do remember life must go on. So love you. Make you happy and once every few often be selfish by putting you first. The things you hope for the most are the things that destroy you in the end. But, the thrill is still beautiful.

There has been a quiet storm for a while now in the country’s education circles with some terming parallel university courses as a backdoor for failures to get university admission. So we are seeking your opinion on the matter. Drop your thoughts in the comment box below.

should parallel courses be scrapped off?

This is the bitter pill that we must all swallow even though it threatens to choke the mortality out of the spirit of comradeship that reigns in us.

Campaign period in campus has to be the most controversial season in an academic year, especially when different aspirants compete to ‘motivate’ comrades by dishing out free cheap booze and meals. Don’t misquote me, I adorn free stuff. It’s the advocating statement that often goes like ‘We will stone corruption to death and torch out the remains’ that often pisses me off.

Mother of All EvilPolitics is merely looking for trouble, finding it, diagnosing it and applying the wrong remedies. Forget the strikes and HELB demonstrations; Campus politics is all that is wrong with higher education in Kenya.

Page 69: Campus diary 1st Magazine

69

There is hardly any place left for independent reasoning. The puppet master continues to pull the strings via empty words to an extent where the most primitive aspects of comradeship have manifested itself turning us into ignorant egocentric fools.

Sheer ignorance reigns in these institutions, to the mass extent of having to loose lives before it is realized that the political campaign stunts just have to stop.

Therefore, you ignorant aspirant who takes prides in being a campus politician. I am ashamed to be associated with you. You are a fake. Like that extensively photoshoped campaign poster.

The only change you are capable of inputting into my welfare is the loose change you continuously stuff into my pocket, so that i may join your convoy of rented noise generating matatus to perform stunts that a professional ‘makanga’ wouldn’t.

Now that we are even on that topic, I refuse to pick up fights with your opponent, while your insight me with false propaganda. Man up and fight your own battles. I mean, c’mon, if you cannot solve your own political issues how do you expect to solve

my personal ones? BE REAL.

That manifesto you so proudly advocate for belongs down the bottom of a pit less drain. The only thing you ought to manifest is our welfare for the next coming year in the institution. We want transport, better food, and cleaner hostels. We don’t really care who runs what business in school. We know you do, because your entire campaign goals revolve around building yourself and not us!

Listen, peaches, our lives begin to end the moment we start to stay silent on the things that matter. Therefore, I am not saying i will vote for you by not voting. Far from it, I will vote. Just not for you!

This is a strange place. Nothing compared to your average chill out spot. It is small but still better. The folks who come here are so full of life, infect it is often crowded during the oddest of hours and every single transaction is extremely low key.

When push comes to shove, it is unknown who the real brains behind this operation really are. None of the clientele seems to

care. The vendor however does. He is after all the face of all operations. Although a student at the local university, He takes this side hustle seriously. A little too seriously to be ignored. Here, a comrade is never right. Unless of course the said comrade is the vendor. On keen observation, one would easily recognize the frequent clients as comrades. The number of elder lies is wanting. Except for maybe the one or two police officers who occasionally patrol the grounds during peak hour. I’d like to assume these officers are either not part of the real police squad or the pay is enticingly too good to turn down, considering they side hustle in their uniform.

that freely blast from the stereo without those irritating ‘toa..weka’ remarks. In fact, the customers are usually well behaved like convent sisters. Good behavior is not an option but a priority, especially if one wants to be allowed back into this thin circle.

The highest grossing product on sale here is Mary Jane a.k.a Marijuana. Sometimes, the occasional illicit liquor is brewed and sold. At cheap prices of course. The puppet master has ensured there is a drinking den. You can tell by the stench in the air that the den is often used for ‘stoning’.

It is essential to be acquainted with lots of ‘important’ people to be allowed to hangout here. If you’re lucky maybe even a shot to interact with the vendor himself. If you ever do meet him off campus, you would strangely notice that He does not smoke nor drink the shit he sells. This is purely business.

This place is called the joint. Here anything goes. For there are no squares in this thin circle of trust, well maybe, except for the occasional snitches. Like myself.
