Commodore’s Message
As the new Commodore please let me say that I am humbled by this honour. Also, thank you to all those who agreed to become involved as Directors of our Club. 2018 poses challenges that cause concern. It is not a secret that our membership, while it did increase last year, has dwindled. One of my goals is to ascertain reasons. Having said this I readily admit I have no insight or vision as to the reasons or solutions. In my short tenure on the executive what I have witnessed is total dedication and love – yes, I stated love – for the organization. Yet we suffer the pains being experienced by other organizations: reduced membership, higher insurance costs etc. etc. PLEASE RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP A.S.A.P. OK, that’s the sermon. On the plus side my first thoughts are to work more closely with Power Squadron in order to add value to our meetings. Stay tuned. Also, I want to honour those who created our Club. Again, please stay tuned. If there are members who have ideas to improve our club please feel welcome to bring them forward, either formally or informally. In closing, on behalf of Carol and I, please enjoy the holiday season safely. Hug tightly those around you – including your boat of course! Larry Seeley “Miss Tee II”

Editor’s Notes
CRYC members, and all other Campbell River citizens, have been blessed with unseasonable weather during the last few weeks. The November storms and accompanying rains and wind, have passed into a period of a relatively stable, dry air mass. Most mornings are characterized by heavy ground fog, but the sun appears briefly later in the day, making for some really wonderful afternoons. Some days, of course, the fog is too dense and the lack of wind allows it to collect and remain along the coastline, with the weak sunshine unable to burn it off during the short daylight period. The editor was lucky enough to choose a day when the sun appeared about noon and made for a wonderful afternoon on the water, enjoying the great winter chinook fishery south of Willow Point and reaping a bountiful prawn harvest along Francisco Point.

We are so lucky to live on eastern Vancouver Island, near the north end of the Strait of Georgia, an area of such beauty and where nature’s bounty provides such wonderful culinary opportunities!

We Support BC Marine Parks Forever http://www.marineparksforever.ca/
Marine Parks Forever – The Campbell River Yacht Club donates each year to the Marine Parks Forever Society. Our membership donates $10.00 each to Marine Parks Forever, as a surcharge on the Annual Dues. CRYC issues tax refundable receipts for these individual donations. Thanks to your generosity we can continue to support this worthwhile BC charity. For more info, see http://www.marineparksforever.ca/

The Club dues for 2018 remain at $110 which includes a $10 donation to Marine Parks Forever. Members should be receiving an invoice/reminder by email. The mailing address for the Club is: Campbell River Yacht Club, 2641 Campbell River Road, Campbell River, B. C., V9W-4P1. Mr. Rene Bosshart (“Sikanni Chief”), the new CRYC Treasurer for 2018, is responsible for the collection of membership dues. If there are any questions related to membership, please contact Rene at 250-923-6304 or email him at [email protected]
Please note that discounts are available for paid up members showing a current (2018) membership card at a growing number of local businesses. In addition to local business discounts, the attractiveness of CRYC membership is augmented by the use of reciprocal moorage at many other participating Yacht Clubs, most of which are located at various points south of Campbell River. These include major population centers such as Nanaimo, Vancouver and Victoria. For members cruising south, this reciprocal moorage at other Yacht Clubs at much discounted rates represents a real benefit of membership. For additional information on the Reciprocals Program, please visit our website at http://www.cryc.ca

CLUB EVENTS The November 15 Annual General Meeting was held at the Fish and Wildlife Clubhouse and was well-attended. At this meeting Nominees for the Club Executive were presented and voted in. All executive positions were filled except for the Treasurer’s position, and Dave Dakin graciously committed to continuing this position temporarily until a new Treasurer could be found. Following the business portion of the meeting, our very own wine and spirits consultant, Karolynne Walton (“Fat Cat”) of Merecroft Village Liquor Store, presented a variety of wines and spirits that she recommends for the holiday season. It was a very interesting session and I think everyone came away with some new ideas to get into the spirit of the Holiday Season (no pun intended) .

The Annual Christmas Dinner was held at the Campbell River Golf and Country Club (formerly Sequoia Springs Golf Club) on Sunday, December 3. The dinner was well-attended and the food was very good. Many thanks go out to our Social Directors Marg Swain and Anna Dakin (and everyone else that gave a hand) for organizing this affair, which everyone agreed was held in an excellent venue. Here are some photos of club members (and guests) at the event (courtesy Dave Dakin).

FEATURE ARTICLE
S.A.L.T.S. – The Tradition Continues The editor would like to draw attention to an important contributor to our Pacific Northwest
yachting community: that of SALTS, the acronym for “Sail and Life Training Society”. This very
worthwhile non-profit society provides the setting for furthering young people’s educational
and personal development through participation as crew members-in-training on two tall
ships owned and operated by the Society. These tall ships, named the “Pacific Grace” and
“Pacific Swift” are headquartered in Victoria. SALTS operates 4 to 6 day cruising legs in the
Inside Passage, from Victoria to as far north as Haida Gwaii. For example, a 6 day scheduled
trip in July 2018 embarks from Victoria, disembarking at Port Hardy, whereupon another
group of young people make the 5 day trip from Port Hardy to Haida Gwaii. Two additional
groups of crew members-in-training rotate into the return legs from Haida Gwaii, via Pt.
Hardy, to the Victoria-Esquimalt base anchorage.
Both “Pacific Grace” and “Pacific Swift” also make longer offshore voyages with trainees to
such exotic destinations as the Marquesas and Society Islands.
SALTS (Victoria) is an affiliate of the American Sail Training Association (ASTA). This
Association states that its mission is as follows:
“The mission of the American Sail Training Association is to encourage character
building through sail training, promote sail training to the North American public,
and support education under sail.”
ASTA was formed in 1973 on the East Coast of the United States and in the ensuing 4 decades
has grown to include more than 300 vessels dedicated to the stated mission of sail training
and character building in young people.
SALTS was founded in 1974 and is a registered charity in both Canada and the U.S.A. It accepts
tax deductible donations from individuals and corporations. Many people contribute to SALTS
by donating their boats, receiving a tax deduction for fair market value for the vessel donated
to the Society.
For more information on SALTS, please visit their website at http//:www.salts.ca.
The editor had the good fortune to anchor next to the “Pacific Grace” and “Pacific Swift” (see
