AIT-Tiger Leong International Innovation and Leadership Camp II
preface
T he AIT-Tiger Leong International Innovation and Leadership Camp was conceived in 2016 as an idea
by Professor Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai, President of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) who wanted to organize a summer camp for top undergraduates students in Asia that will expose students to important and relevant issues in today’s world in a highly interactive environment. The purpose of this camp is to motivate the students and aspire them to become global citizens and innovative leaders of Asia.
AIT alumnus Ir. Tiger Leong who is an avid supporter of the Institute was so impressed by the idea that he offered to co-sponsor the camp. Soon after, Prof. Worsak commissioned AIT Solutions (AITS), one of the centers in AIT that provide integrated solutions. AITS took the challenge of organizing a co-sponsored summer camp that would soon be named the AIT-Tiger Leong International Innovation and Leadership Camp.
The first camp was held in January 2017 with a total of 21 participants from ASEAN countries Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
In the second camp in July 2017, the organizers decided to widen its reach and included other Asian countries. The second camp produced 25 participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Lao, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
AIT and Tiger Leong have envisioned this camp as an annual event that will draw top students from all over Asia and beyond to join this once in a lifetime opportunity.

Innovation in diversity
It’s rightly said, “Think globally, act locally”. It was a great learning experience during AIT-Tiger Leong Innovation and Leadership Camp. Different presentations and site visits imparted perspective making us think globally for the benefit of mankind.
The learning experience of this camp started the moment I met other students from different places on 24 July, 2017. I realised the diversity in culture, way of thinking and lifestyle but the common motto to work together with global perspective for the development of humankind. Having acknowledged the essence of multidisciplinary environment, I got a chance to interact with various experts during the sessions. Starting with introduction, I was highly impressed to see the global perspective of AIT towards sustainable development of mankind. Its way of approaching global issues is admirable.
Session on “Innovation and Startup Opportunities” by Dr. Naveed Anwar paved way for us to explore immense fields for being an entrepreneur. AI and computing, augmented and virtual reality, big data and analytics, mobile computing, automation, stick PCs, mini motherboard and many more possess huge opportunities to explore, innovate and become an entrepreneur.
“Sources of Innovation : User, Open, and crowdsourcing
This article, written by one of the students, Asmita from IIIT, Pune University, India summarizes the overall experience and perspective of the participants in the camp.
Innovation ” by Dr. Yuosre Badir focused on Innovation. Innovation is idea plus implementation. One should never give up and always learn to pick good advice from bad ones. It was emphasised on the ways entrepreneurs should opt for crowdsourcing .“Global competence for the sustainable future of Humankind” by Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nakulchai showed us the vision of sustainable development and human adaptability towards it.
Various presentations by experts were great source of knowledge and experience. “Leadership” talk by Dr. Jonathan Shaw showed insight of leadership qualities. “Leadership is process of social influence, which maximizes efforts of others towards achievement of goal.” I learned about various qualities: complex problem solving, critically thinking, creativity, people management, coordination, emotional intelligence, judgement, negotiation, cognitive flexibility, situational leadership skills which a leader should possess for smooth and successful output. Leaders of innovation are stage setters not performers. Leaders should have patience to amplify differences even when discussion becomes heated.
“Innovative approaches to tackle climate change”, by Dr. Mokbul Ahmad was an eye opening learning session which acknowledged us towards the major issues related to climate which is a global challenge. Innovative approaches, awareness and effective steps to work towards it, is the need of the hour. “Innovative approaches to tackle and mitigate disaster” by Dr. Indrajit Pal paved way for us to realise how disaster
17
AIT-Tiger Leong International Innovation and Leadership Camp II
can affect and the innovative approaches that should be opted to mitigate them. “The Practice of Systems Thinking Based Innovation” by Mr. Robert Steele was the wonderful session. Taking example of tourism sector, we practically experienced what an entrepreneur should do for their startup. The brainstorming through
research and development over here is one the best approaches I have ever seen.
The session “Power of Failure & How it makes you a successful Leader” by Mr. Faisal Niaz inspired and taught us how to actually overcome fear of failure and keep moving ahead to pursue our goal. The drone flying was a great experience making us realise the wonderful scopes and solutions using drones. Session on “Leaders”
customer segments, stakeholders and various different elements involved in starup was a great experience.
The visit to Thailand Science Park was the best experience I ever had. The innovative approaches were amazing. The cardboard chairs, PCB conductivity using paper, self-healing cement, smart systems, DIY electronics shop maker hobby, the PCB manufacturing machines, various organic and sustainable methods of agriculture, new entrepreneurship causes, fish feeder, packaging, interactive art and many other innovative solutions persuaded us to think differently. Nothing is
impossible, it just needs a thought and better approach towards development.
The visit at School of Engineering and Technology, School of Management, and School of Environment, Resources and Development and different labs was also very interesting and eye-opener to the many possibilities of research. The cognitive way of doing
by Mr. Stuart Bailey was really a boost up session. It taught us how to keep ourselves always energetic, enthusiastic, happy and motivated.
The various activities taught us how to work in team. The visit to an organic farm Rai Ruen Rom in Chiang Rai was the best of all. This visit revealed the untold stories and scenarios that actually happen. The steps taken by local communities were so inspiring that it persuaded us to work together for sustainable development. The brainstorming sessions during mini hackathon taught us numerous things.
This camp paved way for me to explore and unfold various opportunities and gain confidence to become a successful and innovative leader. Beyond boundaries, let’s work together. We can, we will.

“The AIT-Tiger Leong Innovation and Leadership Camp has been an outstanding experience. It has not only made an impact on our perspective, views and mindsets, but also made every one of us see more broadly. For this and many other reasons I cannot help but thank Mr. Tiger Leong for his sponsorship and this opportunity to make us feel comfortable.”
“If you ask about the camp that can give you the knowledge, culture exchanging and innovative stuffs, AIT-Tiger Leong International Innovation and Leadership Camp is the answer. The camp is held at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and supported by the generosity and kindness of Mr. Tiger Leong. The camp inspired me a lot and also give me the chance to be able to see the outside world by just attending this camp.”

“Right from the start I knew that AIT will bring out a lot of good things not just for myself but for the whole team---good things in terms of but not limited to intellectual and holistic development. Indeed, AIT-Tiger Leo International Innovation and Leadership Camp prove me right.”
Annie AtienzaUniversity of the Philippines, Diliman, Philippines
“AIT Tiger-Leong International Innovation and Leadership Camp has been a great opportunity for self-discovery and overall grooming of my individual personality.”
“I want to strongly recommend this camp to any student from any country regardless their respective study field. It’s important to know how to accept changes, especially if that has to concern with the productivity and this camp will bring a huge change in anyone’s life in certain ways which would allow anyone to reach their highest potentiality.”
“If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from AIT-Tiger Leong Innovation and Leadership Camp, it’s this: leave your comfort zone, take calculated risks, and then magic will happen. If I could go back in time, I would make the same decision by joining AIT-Tiger Leong Innovation and Leadership Camp again. Thank you for the experience!”
