Camillian in Thailand

It has been 60 years (1952-2012) since the first group of three missionaries of the Camillian order came to

Thailand on 21st January 1952 for helping missions following to the charism and spirituality of St. Camillus

9. Camillian Social Center Taquapa (www.camilliantaquapa.org) has been helping to tsunami victims,

HIV/AIDS patients, children living with disabilities and supporting the scholarship to poor children.

10. Camillian Social Center Chiang Rai (www.camillianchiangrai.org) is the place for helping hill tribe

children (Akha, Mhong, Lahu and Karen), Home of Charity (home for children living with disabilities, formative

house and the center also takes care of church and leprosy patients in Sriwichien Village.

Our first step at Chiang Rai started at Sriwichien Village

Camillian Social Center Chiangrai, one of Camillian centers in Thailand has been doing its social helping work

such as helping leprosy patients, helping orphan or disadvantaged hill tribe children…etc.

Father Calo Lussi (Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus of Betharram) and Sisters of Maria Bambina

congregation had helped leprosy patients who migrated from Laos’s country and Chiang Rung city south of

China since the beginning of 1973. The leprosy patients migrated to Ban God Pa Whay which the village was

officially registered and renamed to Ban Sriwichien in 1990.

Father and sister had served all patients with love and nurture not only in physical but also in spiritual. They had

also helped developing in many community dimensions and develop to all people in the village, provide farm

land to the villagers, provide drinking water, water for cultivation and provided the kindergarten school for the

children. Church was also built and the first mass was helped on 16th February 1975.

First pace of the Camillian Order in Chiang Rai

Archbishop Giovanni Moretti came to visit Father Lussi and celebrated Christmas at Ban God Pa Whay in 1976.

Father Lussi informed the Archbishop that in order all leprosy patients to be well recovered; they needed persons

with well knowledge and skills to this kind of disease to take care of them. Archbishop Giovanni then sent the

letter of requesting to come and help the leprosy patients to the Camillian Order president in Thailand and the

Camillian Order members were taking care of leprosy patients at Khokwat, Prachinburi Province.

Father Marino Karli and Father Albino Turgato were the first 2 Camillian priests coming to help both leprosy

patients and community since 1977. Then Father Victoriao Paleari the director of Camillian Thailand and Brother

Gianni Dalla Rizza, both persons were male nurse with special skills in helping leprosy patients came to be care

providers to leprosy patients and community in 1986.

The first step of Camillian Social Center Chiangrai started in 1992 by supporting the children of leprosy patients

in education and accommodation. The first boarding dormitory was built in 1993 with the total of 30 children.

Camillian Social Center had increased helping to not only children of the patients but also to many hill tribe

children, disadvantaged children and orphan children in Chiang Rai and surrounding provinces. The Camillian

Children Home was officially registered in 1994 and the number of children increased to 150 children in the next

4 years and this caused the property was not able to well accommodate all children.

Camillian Children Home was moved to the present area on 15th May 1997 which is located at the entrance of

Sriwichien Village. The new premises were much bigger. Camillian Social Center Chiangrai has officially

renamed from Camillian Children Home since March 2011. This center is a part of Camillian Thailand social

service centers, The Saint Camillus Foundation of Thailand.

Sisters of Maria Bambina congregation have joined to be a co-work to help taking care of children with Camillian

priest and brothers at Chinagrai Center since 2003. The sisters’ house building was built and officially opened on

19th November 2004.

In this year there were 15 boys who had expressed their interest in the Camilian Order’s mission and wanted

practicing to be a priest and Father Wasan Saiphrom was the person who looked after those boys. Then the

Camillian formation house in Chiangrai was constructed and official opened on 16th November 2005. There are

42 seminarians at this present time.

God helping plans are still going on through the Camillian Social Center Chiangrai mission as Camillian Social

Center Chiangrai has realized that there still are many children living with disabilities who were neglected.

Camillian Social Center Chiangrai has planned to have a place to help those children in the premises. Home of

Charity was built and officially opened on 15th November 2009 and there are 20 children staying at the Home of

Charity in 2011.

From that one small pace, we have been working following our mission and it has already been 20 years. We are

aware that we would not have reached to this point if we have not been received generous supports from God and

the missionaries who had hardly and honestly worked as God’s hand as same as those children sponsors.

One person was called “Father” as he always is father and mother to all children reflecting from what he

has been doing to them. He has been devoting his life to sick people, poor people and disadvantaged children. He

Page 4: Camillian Social Center Chiang Rai Camillian in Thailandk-rc.net/imageupload/27212/CamillianSocialCenterChiangraiYearlyRe… · Camillian Social Center Chiang Rai () is the place

has also been a role model of clergyman life as he has not only prayed but he has also been taking all actions. He

always wakes up early and starts working in the morning. We always see he was usually surrounded by many

children. He is both father and mother to all children. The previously described person is Brother Giovanni Dalla

Rizza and we would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere admiration and thankful to him.

*Remark* Akha (Nationality) people: In Thailand there was a group of settlement was purposively selected based on the people who was so called minority. Definition was given as “an ethnic person” who is not considered as a national by any state, mostly reside along border”. Until 2004, there are 19 groups, 514,420 minority people in Thailand. They are registered by Ministry of Interior, after registration “color identity cards” will be issued for them. Even though those minorities have identity cards, they do not have rights equal to those people who have Thai identity card because they are not Thai Nationality by law. They have limitation of access to basic public services.

Phayao, Lampoon and Phetchabun.

These students stay at the school boarding and special arranged places by teachers and they have been

taken good care as well as taught academic knowledge from all teachers. We are sure they will be independent

and well educated in the future.
